The xc skiing at Devil's Thumb has always been a favorite for us, as far back as the 70's when it was just a rustic ski trail system with a small nordic supply shop. In recent years it became a full fledged resort with lodging where we have often stayed. We have also stayed in Winter Park, about 15 minutes away and driven over to ski. But we have now found our new favorite option. This is such a lovely place, both the facility and the charming staff. It is a better price value for us than some of the other options in the area, yet more than a simple motel in town. You know, like Goldilocks, "just right." I especially want to note that the (included) breakfast that host John cooks for the guests was wonderful, some sweet, some savory, warm, homemade, natural and ample for the start of even an hearty ski day. They take note in advance of special food needs and serve with a choice of time options. The log style of the building is rustic but nicely furnished. The rooms are well designed and furnished with high quality linens and have lots of storage as some guests stay for weeks. The views from each room are very pretty, some to the Continental Divide, some to the woodland. Every single staff member was friendly and helpful. The central lounge area was large, comfortable, attractive and clean and with a central fireplace. There are also some other smaller gathering areas to sit and talk or read if you wish to be outside your room. And there are also some family and dog friendly cabins on site if you want more than a bedroom. Personally, the rooms in the main inn are just right for my needs. We will absolutely be back. It is convenient to local xc skiing and also just a 15 minute drive past the Winter Park Resort and not far at all from several quality dinner options. We met other guests using the lodging for all of these reasons.

We couldn't figure out why there was nobody in the pool and a group of 12 sitting at the hot tub. We quickly realized it was because the pool was freezing. The resort itself was dead which we heard was due to the lack of snow. When it's busy, I assume the pool and the hot tub area is a nightmare because it's small. The bar at the pool was also closed which sucked. The gym was okay but was missing some bumper plates and some machines were broken. It is definitely an expensive stay! Furniture (cabinets and desk) are WAY too large for the space, and overall unnecessary. Takes up too much room especially in the two queen rooms. Safety and comfort issues: * A broken screen on the lower level let many bugs into the house on our last night. We had to move a card game upstairs because we couldn't use the poker table because of the bugs everywhere. * The upstairs deck lacks shades or blinds on the west-facing glass doors, making it unusable in the afternoon sun. In contrast, the ground floor has shades. * The provided pots and pans were of poor quality and did not heat evenly. During our stay, my truck, parked in the garage and driven only once, had a slashed tire that went completely flat. I requested a review of camera footage but received no resolution. Despite paying an early check-in fee and requesting a late checkout, my concerns were met with automated responses. When I reported the tire damage and broken screen, the property management company referenced the listing's 4.96-star rating and said, "Not every property will be the right fit for every traveler." They closed the conversation without addressing my concerns and directed further disputes to Airbnb Support. This property was advertised as a luxury escape, but our experience was marred by maintenance and storage issues, unresolved vehicle damage, and a lack of meaningful resolution from the host team. I would not stay here again and highly recommend avoiding this property or any managed by Winter Park Escapes. After I worked with Airbnb support, which was great, we found a solution with zero help from Winter Park Escapes, as repeatedly requested by Airbnb Support. I tried to leave this review, but it looks like Winter Park Escapes changed the email address, preventing me from leaving one. The 4.96 stars seem fake, as I am sure others have experienced the same lack of respect and action by Winter Park Escapes. It seems to be a property company that's only interested in ripping people off.

After our stay, we were charged a "hot tub misuse" fee for damage we did not cause. While photos were eventually shared, they did not demonstrate damage resulting from our use of the hot tub. During our stay, a hot tub technician stopped by unannounced to make repairs related to issues caused by a previous renter, which raises serious concerns about how responsibility for the damage was determined. At no point during our stay were we informed that we had caused any damage or misused the hot tub. There was nothing apparent to us that would have warranted a misuse fee, and no clear evidence was provided linking the alleged damage to our stay. Compounding the issue was the lack of communication. We sent multiple emails and made repeated phone calls attempting to resolve this matter and received little to no response for an extended period of time. When we finally did hear back, the company refused to remove the charge, citing internal notes rather than proof, and instead offered a discount on a future stay--which does not resolve an improper charge. This experience demonstrated poor communication, lack of professionalism, and an unwillingness to fairly investigate a legitimate concern. They know everyone and can get you a deal or advice on anything. For those who care, this is an Alps style bed a breakfast. Communal meals, no tvs (except ski movies by the fire after dinner). Rooms and decor are dated but if you have skied all day, you don't care. It is warm, friendly and you feel welcome. Honestly, one of the nicest families in town. If you don't want to bother dragging food to an apartment and cooking or paying for an expensive hotel, this is your place. Oh, they can also get you a great deal on passes if you don't have a season. Call them before you buy tickets on the mountain or online.

Ultimately I would have much preferred to have overnighted in the town of Grand Lake, Colorado...a lot closer to Rocky Mountain, NP. Unfortunately rooms were ultra expensive in that quaint little town, so I "bit the bullet" and drove 35 miles away to stay here in Winter Park. I spent $100 plus tax for a Friday night. I was pleasantly surprised how big the room was. Besides 2 queen sized beds, accommodations included a lounge chair, plenty of closet space and an extended area for the bathroom. The spaciousness of the room was absolutely the best part of the motel! I checked in relatively late evening (8pm) and there were no issues. Parking was free and right in the back of the building. Valley Hi is located in the center of Winter Park with plenty of options for food all over town. There is free continental breakfast and coffee offered in the morning with your stay but the following day I had a long drive and grabbed food on the road. Although I was ideally looking for accommodations within the confines of the western part of Rocky Mountain National Park, Valley Hi Motel was more than a suffice place to put my head down and rest for the evening. If you're exploring in the Winter Park/Fraser area, I'd give the green light to come here.
