Results...I wouldn't be writing this review if it had worked. So I gave up on trying myself and started investigating computer repair shops. I came across Computer Pros and gave them a call. They sounded like they knew what I had and gave me a reasonable quote. I dropped off my laptop and was told it should be done the next day. I would give this company 5 stars if the laptop would have been ready as promised. It actually took one day longer. They did indeed fix my laptop and it is running as before. I don't know if the geek squad would have been quicker or cheaper but at least I didn't have to schlep it up to Aventorture and then wait in line for an unGodly amount of time. Chris, the owner of Computer Pros answered my initial call in the morning, asked me a few questions and quoted me a very low, set cost for what I needed done. I even asked him how he would do it on the phone and he took the time to explain it. When I went in later that afternoon, Chris was there, remembered who I was and took care of the issue within the time that he told me on the phone. The set prices posted in their shop seem reasonable and I didn't feel like Chris was trying to up sell me or take me for a ride, as is the case with some techs. Don't be dismayed by my 4/5 rating - I'm just very particular with my 5/5 ratings. Computer Pros in Miami is A-OK in my book.

Then I found this hidden gem in Hollywood, Fl: The Tech Shop! There's no hidden fees and the person who owns the store is a great person. He took my computer and told me he'll call me about what's needed. Without a diagnostic fee, he told me what needed to be done. Then in only a day, the computer was fixed. My computer has been working great ever since. Turns out it was something simple as a BIOS update and a clean-up. However, there were no hidden fees and the price was great. Heck, I would even pay more if he had asked. I would recommend this store to anyone who has issues with his/her computer and want to avoid spending as much as a new computer.

It was the right decision. The manager, Francisco Estevez, explained to me and then showed that the problem wasn't the hinge, but the frame it was attached to under the back cover. If left as is the screen would eventually break. He gave two choices to fix it, replace the cover for over $100 plus the installation cost of $80, and at least a week's wait, or, if I didn't mind having two very small screws visible on the back of the case, $80 and I could wait while it was being fixed; 45 minutes later I left with the repair done. Honest, straight forward and well priced. Couldn't have asked for more!

Initially liked this store. Donated really great computers with no hard drives. Found out they buy…read morethem so came back later and sold a couple. On the last visit, I bought in a Mac computer to sell. Their process was the same: write your name on a piece of paper and we'll call you with the offer. Turns out it was wayyy older than I suspected and we had a conversation that started off friendly where I said no problem I'll come pick it up asap but worst case Monday or Tuesday when back in the area. The conversation continued to a point where the store associate (I think this was the owner) said the computer won't even go online and I politely said you're wrong, this was our reception desk computer that plays music on Spotify and YouTube and the receptionist uses it for notes. After that and an additional comment rubbed me wrong I said I would be in firmly on Tuesday and ended the call. I got a reactionary and emotionally charged call back telling me I cannot hang up on him and I need to come now or the computer will be disposed or I would be charged storage fees. Reminded him I signed nothing, nothing stated time frames to me and it's only a few business days, so he can do that but our retainer lawyers would send an affidavit for damages or possibly take further action. Very rude, very unnecessary, and very inconsiderate. I live 20 minutes away and work 7 days a week running multiple call centers. I will not be forcibly inconvenienced by someone that just lied to me about a computer they claimed to have diagnosed. Computer is definitely worthless if it's as old as he says but telling me it doesn't work makes me question how genuine someone is when they just finished diagnosing it. This is someone who is emotional and needs to win. I asked earlier if he'd want to give me 10 bucks for it (would be worth it for me vs. my time picking it up, gas and listing it for 20-30 bucks on Craigslist or OfferUp). He said no at first which was okay. But at this point he said he would send me the 10 dollars so he doesn't have to see me. I clarified it would be 15, as he wanted my keyboard for 5 dollars. He said no so I told him he better not do anything besides hold my property until Tuesday and he again threatened to get rid of it. In the end he sent me a Zelle for 15 dollars. I called back and stated he'd better have all the data removed before he does anything and after silence was hung up on. This happened 2 or 3 times. On the next call I told him stop playing games and he said it's my phone not him. Convenient considering my phone never does that and I use it for business all day, 7 days a week. I doubt my data will be removed. Overall happy to have experienced this. Was considering white labeling their company to bring back my old tech company. Never. I wouldn't want emotional children helping my customers.

My first consideration is whether these are people I can trust, not only to do the job well but to accurately explain the issues and their associated charges. Any professional can tell you a job required any number of bench hours and if you're like me a computer is a black box you have no way to assert otherwise and have to pay whatever they want. I brought my problem -- and it was a big one: data recovery off an SSD drive -- to My Computer Tech and they retrieved the data on time and for a very reasonable cost. Are they the "cheapest"? I don't know, I didn't shop the job around. I chose them based on a five minute phone consultation from which I gained the strong impression that these were honest staff. I do know that an initial low-ball quote means nothing, and that later the savings can be eaten up by "unseen problems" once the cover comes off. My Computer Tech came in at the low side of the quoted range and I would have paid much more owing to the value of the data retrieved. I will be referring and continue to come back.
