I'm sure the other guides are good but ask for Brandi! She is knowledgeable, high energy and hilarious. The Tomcars are a cool experience even for an experienced driver. They are set to not go as fast which made the new drivers in our group comfortable to try driving. The route is great, beautiful views, some rough terrain and lots of dust, but hey that's the desert! Brandi was super clear with the safety protocols and made sure we were all strapped in. The amount of knowledge she had about plants and cacti was great. Loved the touch of food sample and the prickly pear drink. Her sense of humor while sharing information made it 100x better than any other guide I've had. Definitely recommend this for an ATV adventure in the desert! The weather was unusually cold and raining which made for an added layer of difficulties and FUN. We got to go mudding in the desert (very rare) and SO FUN! Our guide, Brad, was welcoming, informative, and incredibly helpful. Brad had ponchos for us, he offered to wipe our windshields when we stopped, he provided lots of cool facts about plants, animals, and the desert itself. He was patient and thoughtful. Desert Wolf cares about the customer experience and it shows. My 18 & 19 year old kids had a great time. We had a great tour with Travis today. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the desert plants and animals. Driving the Tom-Cars over some rough terrain was very cool. Beautiful day, small group with 5 cars total. Our whole family enjoyed it. The only real downside is that once your kids turn 11 they pay the full rate which seems a bit of a stretch for kids who are simply riders. Highly recommend this tour. read more

What an amazing experience! We found them online which is how we booked our tour for my wife and I and our three kids. Everything was professional and well done from the booking, follow up and the tour itself. Our guide Derik showed us al how to drive and took us on a three hour ride in the Tomcars. We had a ton of fun! At every stop we saw something new in the desert and got a bit a history / nature lesson from our guide. Our six year old has been all about Cacti knowing we were coming on the trip and asked a ton of questions all of which were happily answered. The trails are a good mix of you know you are safe but you still feel like you are truly off-roading and pushing the limits of the Tomcars. Fun to ride and to drive. The cars are great and they had all the supplies (including lots of water) for us. Fair warning though you will get dusty, everyone was covered which made it honestly even more fun. My first experience with Desert Wolf Tours was several years ago, the first time I visited Arizona. I didn't Yelp yet, and I didn't know what to expect. What I recall is that it was one of the highlights of our vacation! When we decided in 2017 to take our family vacation in Arizona again, I was excited to take another tour with DWT. The tour was certainly different than the previous one, but no less enjoyable! We booked a morning half day tour. We had high hopes of eating at the restaurant that acts as the start and end point of the tour, but alas, they are closed on Mondays. In retrospect, we should have made 2 separate bookings for the same tour for our group of four. That prooobably would have gotten us 2 tom cars and more opportunities for each person to drive, and slightly more comfort for us. Still, 4 full grow adults will fit well in a single car. Our tour guide was Chris, and he was and A+ guide! Full of information, willing to make extra stops so we could all have chances to drive, and a great and willing photographer for the groups. A nice change from our first trip was the dust protection provided. The first time we toured, everyone got a bandana to wear around their faces. This time they had branded buffs, which stay on better and, personally, have more use to me after the fact. These things by NO MEANS stop all dust from entering all of your face-holes. You will be sneezing brown for a day or two, it will feel gritty in your mouth, and dusty brown gunk will be coming out of your ears for days. But they DO help cut down on the amount of dust that invades your person. You get out in the desert and get the rundown on vegetation, animal life, and cultural history of the area. The scenery is lovely, and you get to be out in the wilderness. It is a rough ride, and there is some walking around on non-flat surfaces. It might not be for everyone, but it you are a little adventurous and getting off the beaten path (literally and metaphorically) I would highly recommend a tour with Desert Wolf. Pro Tip: Consider bringing a change of clothes for afterwards, if you don't want to also have to clean your car as well as your clothes. read more

Just went on the 3 hour tomcar adventure with my family today and it was awesome! Matt and Travis were our guides and made the trip really interesting by explaining to us about all the desert plants and animals -- I actually learned a lot on the tour and when I went to visit the desert botanic gardens after, I recognized all the plants that they talked about and remembered all the facts :) The guides also helped us take a lot of group photos during all the rest stops in the middle of the tour. My brother drove during most of the trip, but I drove during the last route, which was probably the easiest, but also the dustiest. Matt did mention in the beginning that we would be getting very dusty and recommended that we leave our purses in our cars, or he could lock them up in the shed for us and he was right -- we were covered completely in dust/dirt from head to toe by the end of the tour, so just a heads up to leave all your stuff in your car instead of bringing it on the trip because it will get dirty. That being said, I would highly recommend doing this tour if you're in Phoenix! read more

They provided us with 3 tomcars to evenly distribute our group, so you absolutely will be riding/driving with group members you booked with. Beautiful scenery, a little bit of knowledge on the desert, and an overall great experience. Did the ATV tour plus shooting thing with Desert Wolf tours in White River, Arizona. Recommend. Had a lot of fun. Took 3 h 45 mins start to finish. Range master graciously accommodated last minute requests for extra rider/shooter (we had two ATVs). ATVs are real, basic, military, and unembellished--liked that. And we got to try weapons beyond the ones we originally booked. Array of weapons---good selection from the Uzi and AK47 toUS military to classics like the Tommy Gun to the belt firing vehicle-mounted Browning. Recommended "do not miss"--the sniper rifle (50cal--try the heft!) and the Browning machine gun--though each weapon was fun for us (we did about eight in all). Notes if you are planning to go --a. is not target shooting--is a feel for and flavor of automatic weapons; b. is safe (thank you range master and safety officer), but is not weapons safety training; c. ATV steering special note--is like riding a WWII Jeep in open country---don't grip the wheel hard all the time (counter-intuitive), use open hands on wheel (injuries can occur if you use a classic prehensile thumb-opposed grip), let the wheel respond to the tires to some extent, then direct it; d. is dusty--(I know)--expect to be covered, take a quick change of clothes and ideally plan so you can head to hotel/home after for a shower, hat a good idea, may need to stop and wipe down windshield if riding drag (vehicle in rear of convoy); e. water is provided (carry a backpack snack if you need to). e. and be smarter than me---order extra weapons and ammunition up front! Bonus---the meeting point--the RoadRunner Restaurant--polite service and tons of local flavor (loved it-- rodeo setup and cattle auction area in back was in actual use!), try the food or drink (particularly after--before may cause apprehension for some on the ride . . .) Super Bonus--our guide was Hunter Corbier. He made it a very comfortable, no-nonsense vehicle- and weapons-focused experience--these are dangerous toys, he is a serious, but relaxed host, a good safety officer, and knowledgeable, pleasant company. I'm in town for work and took advantage of staying in for the weekend to explore my surroundings. Booked this tour online and had a great experience with our guide, Brad. Not only was he thorough, welcoming and attentive, he made sure our group was engaged and interactive with one another throughout our 3 hour drive. Learned lots about the Sonoran Desert and captured the most mesmerizing pictures. I went with the 830a tour - great choice, because the weather was perfect (not too hot) and finished at a time to have lunch and continue exploring elsewhere. The tour is a bit pricey, but it was personally worth it for me. The TomCars aren't meant for fast speed, but certainly made to go through rough terrain. To me, it was about taking in the scenery and enjoying what the tour offered. Four stops are made where you're able to switch off to take turns driving if you don't get your own TomCar to yourself. read more

My wife and I booked a tour online for our trip to Scottsdale. I got my printout, paid extra for only the 2 of us in the car and we were set. We arrived right on time as our guide Jason (ALASKA) was calling to check in on us. We went through the safety info(listen up people!!) and we set off. We did the 3 hour tour which I think was just about right. LOVED: Jason was an awesome guide. He didn't get the reference but he is straight off the set of the classic Tv series "Rat Patrol"(check it out on YouTube). Learned how to tell direction in desert by looking at cactus lean and learned how to burn off prickles and eat cactus(tastes like cucumbers). Climbed a small mountain old Native American fort and saw a few cows fighting burros.... Riding in the vehicles was also cool but be cognizant of the safety training about the steering wheel. At the end he blew the dust off us with a blower as it gets extremely dusty. Might want a ziplock baggy for your cellphone/camera to protect it from dust. We had great fun on our morning tour with Desert Wolf. Our guides Alex and Luke did a wonderful job watching over us and guiding us along the trails. Alex in particular was a wealth of knowledge about the landscape and plants. He even fed a ground squirrel that has gotten to know him up on the Indian Fort. There were 6 Tomcars (sort of a military grade dune buggy) plus one for the guides on our tour. You meet up at an iconic western restaurant/bar -Roadrunner cafe-and fill out some forms and get the basic instructions. The vehicles are automatic so it's just like driving a golf cart-gas/break-except you are careening over rocks, climbing up hills and splashing through shallow streams. All the while you are on designated trails that vary from dirt roads to rocky rutted paths to sandy streams. The whole adventure lasts around 3 hours and you stop a few times to stretch your legs and in my case, give my wife a chance to get behind the wheel. It's a good litmus test for how much you trust your spouse's driving as you barrel headlong down hills. Things to know: -they give you a bandana and bottled water (it is dry and dusty out on the trail) -good idea to wear long pants because when you stop you don't want to accidentally get scratched by a cactus. -expect to get dusty and dirty -there's a bathroom break at a camp grounds at the half-way point -while they do not stand there with hands out like some tours we've been on, be sure to tip the guides. They seemed really appreciative to get them. -It's a bit of a drive north from Phoenix, about 45 min. A great way to spend half a day. There's some great scenery and the guides are very happy to take your pictures. read more

My wife and I did an impromptu trip to Phoenix, and wanted to do an off road tour in the Sedona desert. After a quick Google search, we found Desert Wolf. With all the positive reviews it was a easy decision. The tour met at a restaurant in New River. The restaurant was kind of a local dive, but the food was pretty decent for breakfast. Close to meeting time, we got concerned as no communication with the guides had occurred yet. But in come Jay and Jason wearing Desert Wolf T-shirts, made it obvious they were the guys. After 10 mins of administrative stuff, and safety lecture, we were off to the vehicles. We went out with another pair, and each couple got their own vehicle. The vehicles themselves aren't very fast, so you wont be catching any air, but they handle the extremely rugged terrain with ease and comfort. Some of the hills and paths we traversed seemed almost impossible, but somehow these tom cars handle them like nothing. There are several stops, about 4 I think, where you can get out, and the guides give a little talk about wildlife and vegetation. It is also a good chance to switch drivers too. Jay and Jason were both very knowledgeable on the terrain and provided good information about the Desert. All in all, it was exactly what my wife and I expected and wanted. I would absolutely recommend this tour if you are seeking a half day off road adventure of some sort. read more

What happened to my review from 2011? How does this company only have reviews from 2012 and after? Did they somehow get previous reviews deleted? I'm very confused. Anyway, lucky for me I posted my negative review in multiple places so I can repost it here today. I went on a trip to Arizona with my boyfriend and his family a week ago and we decided that a self-driven tour of the desert would be more or less...awesome. His dad booked the tour and made a reservation for 3 tomcars since we had 6 people in our party. This way, he explained it, we could each ride 2 to a car and could switch off driving so as to get the full experience. As we were on vacation I didn't have a laptop handy, so it was difficult for me to compare different companies and just took it on hope and trust that this one would be good. The guide walks in and explains that we have 2 cars, and that this was the way that we had reserved it! This was an outright lie; the whole family had been in the room when the dad booked the 3 car reservation. We explain to the guide that he is wrong, and that we did order 3 cars. The price, by the way, was $$$ per person, and not per car, so we were a little upset that it would end up being expensive for a less exciting experience. The guide goes on to say that we are wrong, since if we had ordered another car it would have cost us 300$ more, which as I already explained was a lie since it was by the person and not the car. After a few moments of my boyfriend's parents raised voices, the guide says that it is impossible that we ordered another car anyway, since he received a confirmation email from the company the day before saying that we only ordered two cars. At this, my boyfriend's mom gets a little pissed off. She tells him, "Whatever, we'll take the two cars, but you guys are going to get a bad review." AND HE FREAKS OUT. Honestly, that's the best way to describe it. He was visibly uncomfortable and his face got a red and he said that if we were going to give a bad review before the tour, he would have to call the company before we went out! I think he was a little worried about his job, so I checked the company's reviews on my phone in the 10 minutes he kept us waiting after his fit. They had 5 stars, and we would be the only people to give them a bad review. I wondered if he was going to get fired if he was the guide that messed up the perfect review. After he comes back, he decides that it is time to stop lying to us. It turns out that the company only had three total cars available since the rest of them were having maintenance issues. They must have overbooked the tour since the other couple was there, or they decided that it would be okay to give them our car and make a little bit more cash. Who knows. He never apologized for the previous lies, accusatory demeanor, or anything at all. He came huffing back into the restaurant and offered the cell phone to my boyfriend's parents in which the company tells us pretty much to take it or leave it. They offered a full refund or take the two cars only. We decided to take the tour. As soon as we were on the road, the guide was excellent. I could tell that he was more comfortable guiding us than he was with dealing with customer service problems. It wasn't his fault that the company overbooked the tour for the amount of cars they had, but his attitude when dealing with the issue was disgusting. I would never book with them again, especially because of the way he initially treated us, but also because of the fact that the three cars had to follow each other on the dirt road. Supposedly each car was going to get a chance to lead the pack. The couple who took our third car was at the front for the first 1/3 of the trip, then my bf's parents were moved to the front, and my car to the middle. In the middle of going up a steep hill, the belt that runs my car gave out, and we were stuck half way up the hill. Frightening for a young driver, I was just glad that my bf's brother was there to know how to stop us from rolling backward, as there is no emergency brake on the tomcar. It took the guide about 5 minutes to realize there must be something wrong and he comes running back, and fixes the car. Here we lost our "middle spot" in the pack and again my car was pushed to the back. This is where we remained for the rest of the trip. For 300$ we never once got to be out of the fumes and the dust and lead the pack. All in all, I would rate the tour a 4 out of 5 because of that instance. I would rate the experience a 1 out of 5 because of the guides original disposition and the way the company handled the car situation. Had a great tour today with Hunter, Chris, and Paul as our tour guides and mechanic. It was a large group; the whole fleet of Tom cars was out. We were a group of four and all rode in one car. This worked out perfectly as the guides made occasional stops which allowed us to rotate drivers. We took a few breaks during the tour and the guides shared some fun facts about the landscape and native animal species. These guys are so lovely and spoke to everyone- from the super duper rich soccer mom to the little girl who asked about bob cats- so kindly. When I was driving and taking us up a hill, the car got stuck on some slippery sand. The lead car and a guide noticed right away, stopped, and hurried back to help me. I was so embarrassed and apologetic but they assured me that it happens all the time. Again, lovely customer service. These guys are the best. read more

This was my second time doing Desert Wolf Tours.The first time was many years ago, and I was somehow lucky enough to pop a tire on our vehicle. This time when much better! No popped tires on my part! Our group had 4 in one car (my party) 2 others from Canada, and our tour guide. Since we made the booking as one group we were all in one car and if we wanted a second car, we would have had to pay a large up charge. BU we made do with all of us in one car and rotated the drivers. Our tour guide knowledgable and engaging. It was so much fun and if you are in the area, you have to go here. (if you go on a Monday, the delicious Roadrunner Diner will be closed but that place is also amazing) read more
