We just got back today from our Scottsdale AZ trip and I couldn't wait to post my comment on this unique desert tour. We decided very late the night before to attempt to book an am tour on the following morning. I left a voice message around 5:30 pm stating that I knew it was last minute, but I had wandered if there was any chance they still had any openings for the next mornings tour. I figured I had missed the boat on this because of our indecision. (Their office closed @ 5:30) I was very surprised when Steve returned my call around 7 pm to fit us in and set the details of our tour! Our guide Alex was very friendly, entertaining, interesting and knowledgeable. Your guide will take many pictures of your group throughout your tour which are posted to the web for you to access! They provide bandannas to cover your face to make your tour more enjoyable. Who would have thought you may kick up a little dust while you drive Tomcars through a desert?? All and all a great time! Great customer service! We would do another of their tours in a heartbeat next time in AZ!! read more

Great way to see Arizona desert. Our guide was great and come one: you get to drive an authentic Tom Car up and down and all around off-roading. Showed up for a corporate "team building" activity with my usual cynical low expectations. Greg & Jason OVERCAME all of my objections to hanging out with co-workers, being outside in the summer and getting dirty on purpose! All SOLVED when I slid behind the wheel of the fun-machine and hit the open road under the starry sky. Total of 4 seats per vehicle and they provide time to swap out drivers so every licensed driver can have shot at a little rough riding. They mix in a little educational info on the Sonoran desert, some fun factoids about life in general and just enough walking around to feel like we were "doing something". I'm a FAN and this Fall I will be booking it as a family activity for my teens & twenty-something kids who typically show up cynical and with low expectations of my "Family Day" Activities. We went on the 8:30 am Sonoran desert tour this morning. Alex was a great tour guide so was his colleague. Our Tomcat broke down soon into the adventure. The guides troubleshooted and last ditch attempt it started up again! Crazy! It was bumpy and steep terrain. We felt like we were driving sideways and it could tip. It was like a roller coaster! We had our 5yr old son with us and he was having a blast bouncing around in the back due to the bumps and driving through the shallow river. He handled hiking around the rocks just fine. I think a little younger of a child may have a hard time hiking up. Definitely recommend wearing sunglasses, hat, warm clothes, and scarf or cloth to cover face to protect from the dust. It's in the 40s most of the trip. If you're not used to cold weather then you better bundle up! It was quite a rugged road but well traveled. It was beautiful and serene. We stopped off a couple times to take pics. They were quick to help others with their vehicles too. It was a lot of fun. I highly recommend this trip. The guides are funny, professional, helpful, and very familiar with the area. read more

We were in Scottsdale, AZ with a large group of girls. I wanted to do something adventurous and see the desert. Desert Wolf Tours came highly rated by Yelp and other sites, so we booked online. I can say out of the pool parties, fancy dinners and overall excitement Scottsdale has to offer - this was by far my favorite portion of the trip!! (And my gfs - and we are from NYC!) I can promise you, the tour will not disappoint and you will not get better pictures!! Hunter helped us book the tour and was overly accommodating. He made booking, planning and executing this trip incredibly easy. As to our tour guide, Sergeant, if we could give him 100 stars we would. Sgt, was literally amazing. We learned about the desert (very cool), we drove the Tomcars for hours and took about 3 photo shoots. He was always helpful and incredibly fun. Especially in the heat and driving military grade Tomcars having someone there to keep the energy up and confidence going thru the hard terrain, Sgt. was above and beyond. I cannot recommend this tour or rave about Sergeant enough. Great trip, very professional and safe. Highly recommend!! read more

An awesome 3 hour Tomcat trail adventure with guides Derik and Mike. Challenging but safe and really fun. We are not off roaders in our daily lives but we will be telling all our friends and family they HAVE to do this. Picked this tour because we didn't want to have to wear someone else's helmet and wanted more time behind the wheel than most of the other tours. We got so much more out of the tour than we expected. Jumping Cholla is not a tasty desert treat, but this TomCar adventure was a great way to add more heat to our Honeymoon! Unreal experience with my family visiting Scottsdale this Thanksgiving! There were 4 of us and we tried the shooting and driving experience. Our guides name was Jim and if you want the feeling of no stress and just shooting guns with a hell of a dude then I highly recommend Jim. Highly trained man of our Military that was extremely down to Earth and fun to be around. The tour was super cool, if you are looking to drive 30 mph in the desert to get to the shooting range, I do not recommend. However, it was very nice to drive in some sticky areas with great views of the desert. We got to the range and Jim walked us through the history of every gun we chose to shoot and then we just let it rip. He was super fun to be around and as long as you respect his rules on the range, he will respect you. Highly recommend Desert Wolf Tours and if you want a hell of a guide, then choose Jim. read more

Had a day free while at a conference in Scottsdale so set this up for me and my wife. Glad we did it. Not the best time of year to see animals but the desert was beautiful and the drive was fun and exciting. You need some muscle to handle the vehicle and there is allot of dust but the cars are amazingly stable and able and DWTs provide you with a great dust protector for your face. Wow, what a fun experience! My father and two brothers traveled to Scottsdale to celebrate my father's 70th birthday! When you think of Scottsdale, what comes to mind? Golf...Spring training baseball...Good food...Hiking...but what about shooting? What about driving out into the desert and learning how to properly operate firearms? We scheduled two sessions - the BOOM adventure as well as the Top Guns adventure - and we had a BLAST! In our morning session which was the BOOM adventure we learned how to shoot rifles - AK-47, AR-15, the famous MOSIN that kicks like a mule, and a few others. In the afternoon session we learned about other guns and handguns - how to properly operate them, and most importantly, how to safely operate them. After completing these two sessions I can honestly say I have a much better education on weapons and understand how to use them. Boy it was fun and we can't wait to do it again. What made the day so special? Not the famous cowtown shooting facility (although that was pretty cool), but our instructor - ZEV! Talk about a guy that has the depth of knowledge you would want when learning about firearms. Talk about a guy that taught us how to properly operate the weapons. And not to be forgotten, just a fun guy to spend a day with at the shooting range. Would highly recommend this to anyone. read more

My husband and I visited Phoenix a few weeks ago and went on the Half-Day Tomcar ATV Tour. It was hands down the coolest experience we have ever had. We got to see such beautiful parts of the state that we would have never seen if it weren't for this tour. Parts of the drive were super intimidating and the Tomcar took a bit to get use to but we both had such an amazing time. Our tour guide, Derik, was so helpful and a wealth of knowledge when explaining the various places we visited. It is definitely a bumpy ride and they don't provide helmets (which we were totally okay with) but if you want to have fun, get dusty and have a thrill then book this trip! read more

Had a great time on this tour with Derek and Chris. Stopped three times for water, nature talks, and to switch drivers. Some great off-roading. It was definitely dusty, but an absolute blast! Only suggestion would be to bring some snacks, nothing is provided and apparently off-roading through the desert makes you really hungry! read more

My boyfriend and I wanted to do something a little adventurous for our anniversary so we decided to go on an off-roading tour. Our guide was very nice and extremely knowledgeable about the desert and the area. He pointed out different things along the way and even let us taste some of the local cuisine naturally growing in the desert. I've live in AZ my whole life and I was able to learn and experience quite a bit. There were also plenty of stops to take a break and stretch and switch drivers if you'd like. We drove TomCars and they were a little bumpy, but if you've ever driven off-road you'll be fine and even if you haven't you'll be okay. However, lol, after driving the TomCar our regular car felt like we were driving the biggest most luxurious Cadillac money could buy. Still, nothing on the trail is too crazy and you can see beautiful views from the trail. I would highly recommend for both locals and people visiting AZ. read more

We went out with Chris, our guide, on an ATV tour today, and it was wonderful. From the very beginning Chris was helpful and polite and showed us all the sights of the Arizona desert. We even saw a diamondback rattler in the first 15 minutes on the road! Chris took us up to some Indian ruins and to a cool turquoise and copper mine. We went on some great off road trails and crossed a 3 foot deep river. At the end, Chris and Zev (the owner) gave us a great training class on firearms then we shot glocks and assault rifles. I even hit the explosive target at the end! It was a great day of fun in the sun. I would highly recommend you look up Desert Wolf Tours if you're in the Phoenix area. read more

This is dirty fun - you actually get really dirty! But its a great time and the TomCars are fun to tool around in. The desert is lovely and lots of good picture ops. We went on the afternoon tour which was perfect in March but later I would assume the morning would be better. Good info and nice way to spend half a day. Its a jaunt out to Cave Creek but not too bad - about 40 minutes from Old Scottsdale. Much easier if you are already north side. Go and enjoy! read more

If you think you'll love this tour, you probably will! Kevin was an A+ tour guide. It's a fun and safe adventure for both kids and adults. Be prepared to get dirty. It was comforting to have a guide carrying a gun, just in case of a sick or hungry coyote. You learn some basic desert survival skills, and if you are adventurous in trying new foods, you'll likely enjoy the jumping cholla, an edible cactus. The scenery was amazing. Use caution if you have any type of back, neck or shoulder issues, even minor ones. Be prepared to be a little stiff. Hunter, the person who booked our adventure, was very professional. We had a large group (60+) going into the desert and I think everyone had a good time -even the car that took a wrong turn. It was slow going at first but as people got comfortable with the vehicles (Tomcar & RZR), things started to pick up. We made a few stops on the way and learned about different flora in the area. I was an idiot and the only one in the group that didn't bring any sort of eyewear. Tanner was an absolute sweetheart and offered up his sunglasses for me. Man that would've been a rough ride if I didn't have those. So - advise: bring glasses, hell even ski goggles, if you don't want to see dust the entire ride. Speaking of which, you will get dusty so dress accordingly. This isn't a time to wear your Sunday best. All the guides (Hunter, Alaska, and Sarge) were incredibly helpful and genuinely cared whether or not we were enjoying ourselves. read more

We did this tour with a group of girls for my friends bachelorette party. It was a blast and everyone really enjoyed it! There were a few others in our group including a family with kids and an older couple and everyone had a great time. Chris was our tour guide and he was excellent. Lots of great information and interesting facts about cactus. The tour itself was fun and the girls really enjoyed driving the big tomcar atv. I frequently travel to the Scottsdale area for business and always try to enjoy some new way to explore the desert or the surrounding areas. On this past trip, I found Desert Wolf Tours and booked a half day tour. The information provided upon booking and meeting prior to the tour was very good. The meeting place was a local saloon with a rodeo arena in the tiny little town of New River. I missed the part that the saloon was openf or breakfast so after finding it, I backtracked a few miles to find a place to get some food before the tour. Upon returning to the saloon and entering it to get the indicated meet-up area on the back patio, was when I realized I could have arrived a bit earlier for breakfast. The tomcars are located right there at the saloon, so you just walk right out, hop in your vehicle and start following Jason. The drive to the desert is along some main roads for about 10 mins. Once you get to the desert trails, the guides make sure you are comfortable driving the cars and they get them in the proper gears for you. All you have to do is buckle up and drive! There is a cubby in the tomcar for storing a small bag, (tissues were nice to have after drinking a lot of water on the trail.) There were three or four stops during the stops, Jason did a great job of sharing information slanted to survival in the desert versus most tours that just summarize history facts and share information about the cacti and animals roaming around. The desert survival aspects were very well explained and demonstrated. That was quite a refreshing angle from other tours (horseback, ATV, hot air balloon, hiking, etc.) that I have been on. There were four other tomcars in the tour that I was in, each carrying at minimum two and up to four people in each. Unfortunately, a driver in one of the cars in our group was not very experienced in off terrain vehicles and seemed to struggle with the car a bit. They have no power steering or power brakes. The trail is rutted and rocky. Though I am in decent shape for a 40 plus year old woman weighing in at all of 120 pounds, I do have experience riding dirt bikes and ATV's. Therefore, I understand picking your line in the trail and when in doubt, gas it! This gentleman was not that fortunate and seemed to constantly struggle with steering his car and allowing it to get away from him. I personally had no problems and was amazed at how smooth and easy it was to control - not to mention the fun of terrain and how well the tomcar cruised over it. After our first stop, he gashed one of the military grade tires on his tomcar and the guide team had to change out the tire. They were very prepared and the entire process took them about 15 minutes. They promoted the gentleman up to the front of the line, directly behind their car and in front of me. Sometime after about the midway stop, the terrain became a very wooded area, not nearly as open as the desert had been with trees forming a canopy over the trail in many places. This was a very beautiful part of the desert I had not seen up close before. During this part of the trail, however, the struggling gentleman in front of me, lost control of his car going over the side of a rutted trail and instantly slowed down, thus making it impossible for him to get over the rut. Contrary to the instructions provided by the guides, he put his tomcar in reverse, backed up several feet and took a running start at the hill again, however, he hit it straight on and the tie rod on his tomcar broke. Jason and the other guide were already somewhat far ahead and could not see what happened. After about 5 to 10 minutes, they returned. Again, much to my surprise, they never stopped smiling, immediately went into repair mode, grabbed jacks, tools and and a spare tie rod and had the vehicle repaired within several minutes and we were on our way again. We were fortunate that the day before our tour, the Phoenix area had received a full day of rain. The trails were not dusty and in some places, we even went through water puddles! I suspect that the time involved in the unplanned repairs was at the cost of not receiving as much desert survival tips as other people seemed to have shared. However, I must praise the guides as they expressed nothing short of competence and professionalism during the entire tour and repairs to all participants of the tour. The desert is beautiful to see this way and I will certainly repeat this tour again upon future trips to Phoenix. This is a great tour and they provide a fantastic experience, even in some unplanned situations. I wanted to share those events of the trail repairs to illustrate the friendliness and competence of the guides, I certainly hope you don't get the impression that the vehicles were in poor shape or inadequate, because that is surely not the case. read more

I booked this tour last minute through Southwest Airlines vacations. I would recommend this tour as a highlight of any vacation in the Phoenix, AZ area. Steve, the guy who keeps all the scheduling arranged was amazing. He worked with us to get just the time we needed to fit in our schedule. Alex, our guide was the most affable young man (to me he is). He made everyone feel special (he praised our driving skills), was very knowledgable of the local history, as well as knowing his way around in the desert. This unique tour which allows one to follow a tour guide as one drives a dune buggy like vehicle over very rugged desert dirt paths and river washouts. We expected it to be hot, dry and dusty....it was chilly, muddy and rainy... It was awesome! Going through the puddles and streams made it a real adventure.
