Josh Parkhouse's team recently restored our outside Saltillo, front and back, and refinished a section of Saltillo inside that had been added when we remodeled, but never matched in color or sheen. It all looks beautiful! The job was a long time coming. We have a tree we love in our backyard called Cascalote. It has beautiful little orchid-like yellow flowers from fall to spring. It never occurred to me that the flowers would be falling when Josh was due to refinish the tile - just before our annual Thanksgiving dinner outside with the whole family. So we pushed back the date. Then the pods arrived, long pods hanging precariously from the tree and looking as if they were going to drop any minute. Fortunately, I did some homework, and found that we were safe until June. Josh was so polite and flexible through these months (and had plenty of work, so the real problem was going to be fitting me back into the schedule), and finally it happened! Most of the Saltillo was 35 years old and looked it. We had refinished the inside when we bought the house five years ago, but the patios were in sad shape. I didn't watch the entire process, but it involved a very thorough cleaning, replacement of cracked tiles, filling in of pits, some staining, fresh grout, and coats of finish. There is a lot of hand work to this process, and it takes a careful and artistic eye. Josh has a Saltillo specialist, Sergio, who is brilliant! When the crew was finished, all three spaces looked beautiful! We had to stay off the Saltillo for 24 hours, and that meant my husband and I were going to have to put all the pots and furniture back on both patios. Josh called last Friday to check on the job, and I told him we were very pleased, but dreading putting everything back. He knew we had an event on Tuesday, and would be using the patio. Our run-through is today (Monday). Well, guess what? Josh let me know this morning that he would be over in the afternoon (on a Sunday!) to put everything back. I figured I would help him. Good as his word, at 5:00 he arrived with his whole family! He and his wife had been helping a parent move. The three kids got out of the car and waited patiently while their mom and dad put everything back exactly as I wanted it. We had a little visit, met the kitties, and they were on their way. Was super interested in this, until I learned how much they wanted to charge. I wanted to spend around $500 bucks to clean 1500 SQ FT of 20 inch tile and grout. If they polished tiles , cleaned grout, sealed their tile - I would have paid more. But I don't see any reason to spend around $3,000 on getting my tile polished. Technically, it's correct that we never spoke. But, factually it's incorrect. I had Maria W call for me - based on a few good online Yelp reviews, and she was quoted absurd dollar amounts to clean some tile, on a house our client is selling. I was told I would get professional tile cleaning, color seal for the grout and free shower pan cleaning for $100. The guy stepped foot in my apartment at 1:35pm with his bucket and mop and was gone BY 2:00pm No color seal grout and all they did was mop with "high acidic cleaner". They spent 5 minutes filling their buckets with water and about 15 minutes "cleaning" with the same equipment a maid cleaning service would use. Gloves, mop, and green scrubbing sponge. And to top it all off...the guy had the audacity to ask "$200". $200!!!!!!! For 15 minutes for mopping. Are you kidding me??????? I gave him $100 (which by the way i didn't get what I was promised) and booted them out the door. I shouldn't have gave more than $40. Ridiculous scam business. I feel like I just got pranked. Clearly it all depends on the works that show up. This guy had his brother in the car with him and that seemed to be a larger priority to him. REPLY TO OWNER BELOW: Now they are claiming I showed up 30 minutes late and was acting suspicious. This is amazing. The owner privately emailed me and threatened to tell yelp about my business practices. I'll be happy to share with Yelp the call of the driver coming to my apartment and asking where to park and me coming out to show him. So how could I have been 30 minutes late????? Your workers are lying to you. No one kicked out anyone in the middle of a job. Who would do that? What would be the point of that? I actually told them that I was going to step out of the house so they could finish and that I would be back in 30 minutes. They replied with "were almost done anyways".
