My daughter wanted to try dance and Desert Start Dance was highly recommended by a friend. We had done rec dance through the city center, so we weren't sure what to expect. Miss Ann, the owner and director, is so welcoming and involved. We have been here for 3 years now and absolutely love it! We've done Tap and Ballet, but my daughters favorite has been Jazz and Tumble with Miss Janice! We love that there are only two required shows - Jingle Bell Jam, the winter production, and their annual production in June. Not what I expected at all. I purchased a few Hip Hop classes through Gilbert Community Activities and was pretty disappointed in the class. The first two classes, the teachers spent over half the class talking. It took them over 20 minutes to even begin the warmup. Once the warmup was done, it was more sitting around and talking. The first time it happened, I thought it was for the kids to get to know one another as it was the first class. Then when it happened the following week, I told another mom about it and she said that wasn't normal. She complained to the main lady at the front and she promised it would get handled. I mean my daughter wasn't even leaving the class sweaty. She didn't even break out in a sweat at all in the first two sessions. The next two classes were MUCH improved. The teachers "assistant" (not sure why she needed one other than to be distracted by her) wasn't there and they got to dancing immediately. My daughter was so excited because she actually danced. Then I came in for the 5th class and it was so much talking, AGAIN! I just couldn't believe it. In the entire session of classes, they never even learned a dance! From all the great reviews this place has, I was super disappointed. I danced for over 15 years growing up and had expectations of what a dance class should consist of. The other classes seemed to meet that standard, the moms talked about it being like that "normally", and I saw a hint of it in 2 of the 8 classes. I wouldn't recommend this hip hop class at all. It was Wednesdays at 7pm just so people know what to avoid if they want to seriously get their child into dance. read more

Desert Star Dance has been awesome for my daughter Dakota. She has been a dance student there for a year now. We love that once a year she gets to try out new classes and see if a new dance style appeals to her. For now, she absolutely loves hip hop and every instructor she has had is fun and upbeat and does an excellent job with the kids. She also really enjoyed the recital in June. Love this dance studio. My girls have been going here for a few years now. Took a break last season and when we came back I was excited to see they moved to their current location (much bigger space). There's lots of room to sit and wait or watch your kids get their dance on. When we came to register for the year, they recognized my girls and were happy to see them again. They just love their teachers. I was contemplating trying out another studio nearer to my house but I'm glad we didn't. I don't mind the drive because my girls love it here. We are very happy to have found this dance studio. The teachers are very friendly and knowledgeable about dance. After performing and growing up with dance in my childhood for over 10 years it was important for us to find a dance home for our daughter. She is almost 4 and in the tot's combo class and tumbling. The facility is clean, I love that there are couches and tables to sit at and even a kitchen for students to eat and do homework while at dance. I wish I had this growing up. I would get home at between 9-10pm and then eat dinner. The location is convenient, and I look forward to watching my daughter at her first recital. read more

My 3 yr old daughter looks forward to going to Desert Star Dance each week and is gaining confidence in her new skills! Her teacher, Kyla, does well with enforcing some structure, while still keeping the class engaging and FUN! I like being able to watch my daughter through the 2-way mirror or I can sit comfortably on the couches/chairs provided. When I initially inquired about the free trial class, the staff responded promptly and answered all my questions. Trial tap and ballet shoes were provided by the studio, which was very helpful, as I didn't have time to order everything prior to the first class. I believe the fees for registration and classes are reasonable. My daughter is in a tap/ballet combo class. The teacher starts class on time and makes sure to keep breaks brief, so we really do get our money's worth with nearly a full hour of dance per class. I looked at many dance studios and am pleased with our decision to go with Desert Star Dance! read more

We are new to Desert Start Dance this year and my daughter is loving it! She is getting top notch instruction from her regular dance teachers to the special guest choreographers they bring in. The instructors are very knowledgeable and the technical instruction that my daughter is getting is some of the best she has ever received. The staff is very friendly and helpful as well. Daughter loves it. It keeps her from playing games and watching TV. Staff is very friendly. The only negative thing is the Parking Lot. It can be very hectic. People seem to think it is a school zone there when they drop off there kids. I recently almost ran over a little girl running around a car that just stopped in the middle of the driveway of the parking lot to get to her dance class. I then received a tongue lashing from a Grandmother who told me there was Dance School there. That there is. There is also a restaurant that serves alcohol in the same parking lot, Safeway sells Alcohol, a pizza place, and a few other small businesses. Park in a parking space and walk your kids to class if you value you them. At least turn your car, so they do not have to cross the driveway of the parking lot. read more

In a world of "Crazy Dance Mom Drama" and inappropriate attire, music and choreography for kids - DSD is a breath of fresh air. Kiddos are always in dressed in age appropriate attire, dancing to appropriate lyrics, and choreography. As a mom - that makes me VERY HAPPY (Especially her dad) My daughter was introduced to the love of dance there when she was 3 and is now in one of the Company groups at age 7. She as well as my husband and I have made some life long friends there that we now call FAMILY. The teachers as well as staff have become FAMILY as well. I know that we are surrounded by people with good core values, the love of dance, and the importance of well balanced family and extra curricular life. I continue to drive 30 minutes to come to the studio that truly loves DANCE and has placed the love of Dance as priority one when instructing their students. Their is discipline - but there is no unhealthy competition.... Everyone supports their fellow dancers and families. The move to the new studio this month is great, state of the art facility!! We haven't been with Desert Star long so I can't as yet speak on the recitals or costumes but as far as instruction I've been super impressed by the depth and detail provided! My daughter is a 14 year old beginner to dance. It is nearly impossible to find a class for her age group and lack of experience. Most studios offer the opportunity to join a class either younger or the same age and way more experienced, and both prospects presented some serious embarrassment for a teen. This beginner teen class is exceptional. Scott gives individual correction when needed, demonstrates the proper form and technique and then allows them another opportunity to try it the correct way. I have seen huge improvement in my daughter in a very short time. Scott is also funny and kind and the class responds positively to his teaching style. Excellent class highly recommended! read more
