I had heard great things about Denim Surgeon. After dropping off a pair of J Crew classic straight-fit jeans that were tapered to perfection, I decided to return with my Naked & Famous Selvedge Raw Cotton Slub to get them hemmed. What I received in return was nothing short of disappointing. I am unsure what exactly occurred, but the right leg of the jean appears to have been cut and hemmed at a slant. The result is that the side seam of the right leg now twists and the seam ends up nearly to the front of my leg. When I showed this to them upon picking it up, they didn't acknowledge any wrongdoing. Instead, they insisted that the inseams matched and it was hemmed correctly. I understand that mistakes happen and would have appreciated an acknowledgment of it. But that never happened nor was there any attempt to make it right. As a result, I won't be returning here. read more

Had a few pair of denim jeans in my closet with torn crotch seams. Usually would just donate to goodwill. I was looking for a seamstress or dry cleaners that could make this repair. Every place close to where I live did not make this repair. So checked on Yelp and saw Denim Surgeon. I never went too the store location. Just followed online instructions when downloading order forms. Yes you need too fill repair form for each item needing repair or alteration. Had 3 pairs of jeans. Two with seam splits in the crotch area and one pair to let out. Placed in box and shipped to store location. They contacted me by email regarding repair. Shortly there after received invoice for complete job with S&H. Turnaround was about 30 to 40 days. Hey the repairs were a hell of a lot cheaper then getting new jeans. do not recommend. the alterations took two weeks (which would have been fine if this place was actually good at the services they offer) and the tailor did not carefully reattach the leather label on the back of the jeans. it looks very sloppy considering the leather patch is in a very visible spot, cannot be covered, and the jeans are on the higher end price wise. you can get the a better service for the same price pretty much anywhere else. i am happy I didn't bring in any of my higher end designer tailored items (pants, dresses, skirts) to get ruined here. read more

Had two of my favorite pairs of jeans repaired here. One just a zipper replacement and the other the inner thigh had split on one of the sides. Zipper replacement was great I mean that's pretty standard. The other pair where the crotch was reinforced it looks great and the jeans still fit perfectly and the inner backing isn't uncomfortable either. I've read reviews from other places that do jean repairs and have heard of the backing being stiff and making the jeans unwearable or it altering the way they fit. Denim surgeon did a fantastic job and I would definitely return, I wish I hadn't thrown out a few pairs that I now know they could have fixed. Service turnaround was about two weeks. Wow is all I can say. Those who know me know that I am fanatical about my jeans. I have a collection of rare denim that I have cultivated for quite a while which are some of my prize possessions. Good denim that has been well worn can't be replaced. Sure, you can buy the same style but it often takes years to get them worn in the correct way so that they become not only part of you but part of who you are. I had been considering sending out a few pair of jeans to one of the upscale denim repair shops in Manhattan or LA but resisted because I had read some horror stories. I actually canceled a fitting appointment at one of Denim Surgeon's competitors because I read a few uncomplimentary reviews on Yelp. If they screwed up what I sent them, they literally couldn't be replaced. I continued researching and came upon Denim Surgeon. After a brief phone call, they established enough trust that I sent them 3 pair of jeans worth about $4000. I needed different repairs and alterations to each that would give me an excellent idea of their talents and their limitations. Upon their receipt, I received a text message with several lengthy questions about what I specifically wanted done. At first I was a little taken back. Wouldn't a phone call be easier? Then I realized that with a text, there would be written, specific instructions that could be referred upon by them and me. I was impressed by their candor and their comments. They told me specifically what needed to be done and any limitations they might encounter. After a few days I received an e-invoice which I thought was more than fair, considering they were performing the following services: Repatch and rehem a pair of PRPS Noir Lyell Blocks, making sure to retain the original look of both. Taper and straighten the selvedge on a pair of 1947 Levi's 501s to match the leg dimensions of another reference pair Hem a pair of semi raw PRPS Noir jeans The repairs would take an estimated two weeks to complete only they were done in less than one. Received the package today and was blown away by the quality of the work. Everything was done perfectly and precisely and believe me, if it wasn't I would know. Stopped in to the Denim Surgeon to get a couple pair of pants hemmed and asked if they could mend a pair of pants that had ripped. I thought my ripped pants were a lost cause since the fabric had worn a little and it wasn't on the seam, but surprisingly they were able to repair the pants and I can wear them again! I had a couple pairs of jeans and a shirt altered here. It took a couple of trips, but I ended up with alterations I was okay with. The first round they got the alterations wrong (length totally off), so I had them try again with the result being pants with the correct height and a very disappointing taper. My main complaints were that they didn't match the color of the thread on my selvage jeans and had a hard time charging me correctly given that they informed me after being charged initially that there was an oversight and they would have to charge me even more. I'm no expert, but calculating the correct amount to charge a customer and matching the color of thread should be some of the simpler things a tailor is tasked with. read more

I've never had any repairs done to my jeans aside from having them hemmed until now. Recently, as luck would have it, 3 or 4 pairs of my jeans all crapped out at the same time in what amounted to a well-orchestrated plot to leave me practically jean-less. Not wanting to pony up and buy multiple new pairs of jeans, I decided to have a couple choice specimens rehabilitated. One pair had a reasonably bad knee blowout, but the other pair had a pretty significant crotch blowout, so I was skeptical. When I brought them to Denim Surgeon, I had high hopes but low expectations. Thankfully, everything worked out great and now my jeans are back in full effect. The repairs worked out to $75 for both, which is a bit steep, but the workmanship is solid and they do really look great. Hopefully I won't have to come back here often, but if I ever need jeans repaired again, I would totally entrust these guys to do the job. read more

I LOVE the Denim Surgeon. I have been going to them for different denim repairs here and there over the years-- everything from patching crotch tearing to button replacement and reinforcement. They always do an amazing job. They recently saved my favorite jeans that cannot be replaced-- and for a very fair price. Sent in a pair of Rag and Bone with a hint of stretch. Too much for me to attempt self tailoring. Requested to be taken in 2.5 inches. Tailor called me to explain anatomy of premium denim and waist on label is not always accurate. She was not condescending, just sharing information so that I would end up with the other exact waist size I needed for the rise. Kattya repairs jeans. She love jeans, and she loves even more to repair them. Although my problems have not been catastrophic, it has been enough to relegate jeans to "around the house only" , which is always a shame with (nice) jeans. The results are great, and are only apparent when scrutinized. Well worth the money to extend the life of a favorite pair of jeans. The service is offered out of Mid-City Tailoring's store front inside 25W 43rd street building, and it turns out Kattya is the daughter of Oscar, so excellent tailoring and customer service is in her jeans, or rather genes. The prices seem to be better than Denim Therapy (although I only compared online and have no experience with Denim Therapy), and the turn around much better. This tailor shop in the lobby of an office building has the denim repairs going on in the back. I dropped off a pair of jeans that needed the whole butt reinforced and another that needed a special button put in and resewing the buttonhole. Turn around time was about a week. I printed this page and used the Yelp coupon for 10% off. It was $60 for everything and the quality of work is great. They were reinforced with the same color denim so you can't even tell work was done. So happy to be able to wear my softest old jeans again without worrying they'll tear. I think it's a little expensive but worth it to save your favorite (probably way more expensive than the repairs) jeans. I am extremely impressed with Denim Surgeon. 4/5 because on my first visit they didn't repair my diors in the manner agreed upon - BUT when I took them back and explained the mixup there was no issue correcting the problem at no charge. I've had an APC blow out patched up, a Samurai blow out patched up and my dior 19cm MIJ completed taken in at the waist and rear - full reconstructive surgery! All procedures (save the initial Dior issue) were executed flawlessly! Oh, and I'm in DC - there's no one in this city like DS so I take my jeans with me whenever I visit NYC - the surgeon is THAT GOOD! I brought three pairs of jeans to Kathy (or perhaps it's Kattya as a previous reviewer noted) to be shortened and she did a fabulous job. On two pairs she did a new hem but on the third she reattached the old hem. The results were flawless. She knows denim! She also shortened a denim skirt much to my liking. Another plus: I got 10% off my total for bringing in an old pair of jeans to the shop. I'm confused by the two less-than-glowing reviews. Kathy does work out of her father's shop but isn't there every day -- so call first to make sure she's in. I can only assume that the first two reviewers didn't actually work with Kathy. Took some raw denim to them to get altered. The first time they did it and the alterations were a bit off so they offered to redo it. When I came back to pick them up the lady had forgotten and not made the alterations. All in all the people there are nice and I'm sure are competent enough. The guy who is the actual tailor at Denim Surgeon isn't bad. He's honestly pretty decent. The reason for the bad rating, however, is the fact that the male owner is extremely rude and recalcitrant. The tailor there might have accidentally forgotten to tailor one of the legs of my jeans, which caused them to be uneven. however, instead of trying to solve the problem, the owner took it upon himself to berate me and say that it was my fault and it must have been how I wanted it. After going to my normal tailor and being told "we can't do anything to fix those", I brought them to Denim Surgeon. They basically remade the top half of my jeans, from the yoke down to the knee. I couldn't recommend this place more for repair of high end repairs. While most people come here for denim repair I brought my pair of reproduction raw chino pants. The pants had a huge crotch blow out that was completely frayed. I was suggested Denim Surgeon and a competing company by another great store for high end denim "Blue In Green Soho". After getting price quotes I found that Denim Surgeon was going to be a lot cheaper. For $55 they completely repaired the blowout to the point where it's almost invisible where the huge gaping frayed hole was. They also added a hidden patch on the inside of the pants to reinforce the area and prevent it from happening again. The inner patch matched the color of the inner pockets which is a minor detail but shows they care about the work they do and know what they are doing. The turn around time was about a week and the staff is also extremely friendly. They saved my $300 raw chinos from going in the trash. I will definitely come back here if I need any repairs done in the future. read more

I come here quite often to reinforce the crotch area on my denim. I'd say the service has always been pretty average, but they do a good job. For the premium price that you pay here, you'd expect the customer service should be up to par. Unfortunately, I came here last week to drop off two pairs of paints that my boyfriend left behind after moving to California. I requested that both be crotch reinforced and one be hemmed. They hemmed both pants and now one has become men's cropped jeans ... When asking for money back, their lady at the front told me to ship them back to her because they have enough fabric to fix it (over an inch and a half was removed...) I'm not sure what customer would want to deal with the hassle of shipping, waiting, etc. I would have genuinely appreciated it if the lady at the front, who took my order, claimed responsibility for making a mistake and am still looking for some money back. read more

These guys are okay in quality, great with turn around time, but not up to par with some detail I desired when working on m selvage. I brought in two pairs of denim, both selvage.. A pair of Eternals and Pure Blue Japan's, gives you the idea of how high in quality and stitch I wanted it to be. I just needed a turn around time that was fast because I was leaving the area. First thing I noticed is that to fit one pair for my taper was extremely fast, it was honestly on my part looked to be amateur because of how quick. But the fit turned out to be really really awesome. Both pairs had a hem as well but I specified what length I wanted and both were around what I expected. Not necessarily the EXACT length, only around a quarter inch off, I noticed it because I was animate about my length. Again the turn around time was awesome. They had both pairs finished in 5 days, which to me is great. Now here are the negatives. For a place that had such good reviews I was surprised that they didn't offer a chain stitch for my hem. I had a crotch blowout repair on my Pure Blue Japan's and I had to get them redone somewhere else because of loose stitches, I could see it slowly start to tear more. What I was missing was the craftsmanship and attention to detail. I take my denim very seriously and to me going to this location is just another mom and pop shop. They didn't give me the services exactly wanted but if you just need a spot to just do the job and don't care much about detail, then this is the spot. They're also very affordable. Me personally I'd rather go to somewhere else where they solely specialize in repairing or making alterations for denim, this spot is more of a every kind of alteration kind of spot that just coincidentally does denim as well. I recently brought in a pair of 21 oz selvedge raw denim to have tapered and hemmed. Great work! She really knows what she's doing and she was super helpful and knowledgable. When working with selvedge denim she always preserves the selvedge. I like to wear my jeans kinda slim fitting and she knew exactly how slim to go, considering my new jeans feel like thick cardboard. Actually I don't like to write a negative review. But I 'm very disappointed. I asked here for a very high end designer jeans which are very expensive. I asked here for reattach hems with chain stitch. I ordered for inseam 30 inches. After I picked up and check them, the right leg has 30.5 inches (a half inch is no problem) the left leg is 31.25 inches. I asked fix them. I waited three days. This time is Not straight stitches and some lumpy chain stitches. I know that may tailor don't have a chain stitch sewing machine. I paid $40 only this service. I don't need a special job. I wanted a normal job enough. But I think it was very difficult for them. Their work is one star. When I am back to my country, I will fix them. read more

These people are artists. I blew out the knee of my favorite jeans and thought there was no hope for them. But they completely repaired the hole so much that you'd have to actively look to see it. I was blown away by their service. My jeans are basically as good as new. Only problem are their hours are pretty weird, so you have to drop off during the middle of the day. I remember the day I bought my first pair of designer jeans. Joyous was I to have found them at half off its retail price. They were absolutely perfect and fit every curve (or lack of) on my lower half and when I gained a few pounds, the jeans would magically stretch to accommodate. I wore the poor pair to death and one day, it just had enough of me. After giving it a normal wash, two holes in the crotch were staring at me while I stood with my mouth agape. Thinking positively I figured, "Better ventilation for that swamp ass!" .. but no, that's not very ladylike, Lizz. So off to the closet the jeans went, hidden away for over a year while I purchased and returned jeans every so often in hopes of replacing the pair I loved so dear. I had Denim Surgeon bookmarked on Yelp for about a year as well but the fact that the fix would cost me $50+ turned me off. I figured, I could easily find a replacement.. right?.. RIGHT!? Fast forward one year later and I'm looking back at all the money spent purchasing jeans that were far from perfect rather than bringing my old pair here. I brought my jeans in and the staff did not wince in disgust at my holey disaster nor judge me for my denim abuse as this was a typical job for them. I'll admit up-front that for what Denim Surgeon charges, you could probably get two pairs of jeans hemmed elsewhere for cheaper, but you really are buying expertise advice in denim. When I brought in my jeans and fitted them, they offered me plenty of suggestions about common fits and asked me how I felt about certain lengths. I could tell from their suggestions that they really knew their stuff. I also give them credit for not trying to sell me on the most expensive hemming package. Finally, though their turnaround time is usually a week, they helped me with a trip I was taking and had my jeans back in five days so they get props for good customer service.
