Great local place. They have seasoned employees that know stuff about stuff. When I need help hooking some weird pipe to another weird pipe that is 80 years old, there is usually an employee in there that knows the fix. The register staff is always friendly. They have lots of seasonal nick nacks too. That makes it fun for my wife to shop while I grab the tool parts I need. I get the vibe that the employees view their work place as a family effort and not just employment. That type of atmosphere carries over into a place that is enjoyable to frequent. Inconsistent service. Had keys cut two weeks ago and they worked great. Needed to have another key cut and they said they would not cut keys they do not sell. Said the previous guy who cut my keys should be fired. Was very satisfied - not so much now. Always like to support local business. Will go to chain next time. read more

I cannot simply say enough about this "AWESOME" hardware store. I was at home and called a few local places and they I got very lucky that Gary at your store answered me. He was very professional and knew the "exact" product I needed and he took the time to make sure it was there! How great is he! Well. besides Gary.. Paul and Alyssa were great! Yet, one person besides Gary really stands out and is so over the top knowledgeable about the ENTIRE store and the products you carry and where they are all located and that is JACE! I had to one day make 6 keys and I could not believe how extremely nice and fast Jace was! I was in the store and I saw people trying to locate things by themselves and I went and found Jace for them and he took care of the situation! Thanks ALL! Quite a dependable hardware store. They have everything I've gone there looking for (so far). And as Melinda mentioned good customer service. Convenient hours, too. 7:30 to 8 monday to saturday (i think) and they're open on sunday, but I'm not sure of the hours. read more

I love this place... they have a decent selection of a VERY wide variety of items... you can buy tools and hardware or napkins and a french press for coffee. It is the classic mom and pop place where everyone is friendly and wonderful. read more

This copy of the one star review I just left on Del Mar Watch and Clock Shop's yelp site (giving kudos to the Denault guys): "As Jose was replacing the dead Movado watch battery, I remarked about Denaults Hardware's impressive customer service because they said to take the watch to a watchmaker because they could not fix it without keeping it waterproof. Jose said it would not be waterproof after he changed the battery either, unless I paid a couple of hundred dollars extra to get the bezel and gasket replaced (after the seal was already broken). So I have to send it to Movado now and pay again to get the battery serviced ($45 + $15 shipping in addition to this shop's $15 battery replacement charge). As I was looking through my old watch file, I noticed that I took the same watch to the same shop in 2007 to get links removed. They said only 2 could be removed so I sent it back to Movado to get a third link removed. Same story .... had to pay twice to fix the same issue. I noticed another reviewer said their watch was not waterproof either. The folks at the shop might want to follow Denault's lead ... tell your customers about ruining waterproof feature before you open the back." read more

This place is as good as local hardware stores get, anywhere. Friendly and helpful is a way of life here and the inventory is deep and wide. I generally don't enjoy shopping (for anything) but this is probably the only store I will stop into, even if I don't need anything specific. Staff is extremely nice and helpful, Frank is always asking customers if they need help and assists. I went in to get some screws for my TV because nothing I had seemed to fit, and he tested out a dozen different things helping me and figured out the right size (ended up being metric). Me and my sons can always count on the older guys to go to just the right bin or aisle and track down something that's been stashed away for that emergency fix for people like me. I am writing this review because I was so impressed with Weston's customer service. DeNaults has always been known in the community for its customer service and this young man was no exception. I came in looking for an item I had purchased at another DeNaults. The cashier directed me to where I might find it, but he was not familiar with the item. Weston found me looking in the section and took it upon himself to find the item ( at the cashiers station, where I had found it before) He then asked if I needed anything else and proceeded to locate the cactus soil I needed and loaded it into my car. Sometimes good service needs mentioning. Keep this up Weston, and you will go far! read more

I have been a long-time, loyal customer of DeNaults San Clemente. I shopped there so much at one point that I was on first name basis with many of the staff! I would have wholeheartedly agreed with many of the reviews below...but not anymore...not after I was completely humiliated by the owner, of all people, during my last time there. I was shopping for some paint, talking with a new sales guy when this man rushes up to me and screams that I was not welcome in the store anymore. At first I thought it was a joke, but soon realized that he was serious!! I told him, as half the store looked at me, that I didn't know what he was talking about and that I have never been told anything like that. He then went on questioning me, basically calling me a liar until it dawned on him that he had mistaken me for someone else. His response was to backpedal and ask if he could help me find something!!! I was absolutely mortified and then come to find out that it was the owner who displayed such un professionalism and a total lack of customer service. Well..I have to say he did succeed at one thing...I WILL NEVER SHOP AT DENAULTS' EVER AGAIN!! I have never experience anything like that, never being so utterly embarrassed as I was that day. It's a shame...because me as well as all of my design business associates are now making the longer trek to Lowes' to do all our business...and it's a lot of business. read more

DeNault's saved us! We were borrowing a friend's beach house for the weekend when we broke their outdoor umbrella. My husband didn't have any tools with him, so he took it down to DeNault's and they helped him repair it. Jason and Carl were great. They helped him the entire time and it only cost us $.95!
