I needed two random connector pieces for a piece of furniture I was trying to refurbish. I know Lowe's screw/bolt section is not worth the trip for something of that sort, especially to buy as a single piece/part or two. So I went to HD with no real luck, but they had better variety options. And in my area (Carlsbad) our beloved Denault's location just closed due to a reconfiguration to the plaza it was in for years. So I drove to the original Denault's in my hometown of San Clemente and had the exact parts I needed in hand withing minutes, with the help of the hardware person that helped me. Denault's isn't your average hardware store...they're also an amazing gift shop. If I'm not mistaken, it's the owner's daughter who does all the buying and she's incredible. You can find gift cards, candles, stuffed animals, toys for the beach and so, so much more! I feel like it's a mix of a typical hardware store to buy items like tools, paint, etc. and like the store Home Goods. I could come and shop for hours! I compl to the manager but she just frowned and apologized because I think the employee I was complaining about was a Denault family member or her husband or brother. I came to this location cuz I wanted to support local businesses but I decided to just drive to Lowe's a couple miles away and I was much happier with the price, selection and experience. I needed to have a plastic panel shortened , so I brought the panel to the store, hoping a recommendation can be made for a suitable saw. Hardware employee Rich was kind enough to offer cutting my panel for me, using a chop saw in the back. The panel was cut perfectly and I even offered a $10 tip to Rich, saying "have a drink on me." He flatly refused the cash and told me it was a part of his job. I highly recommend this great Hardware Store, which reminds me of the friendly mom and pop shops from a time long past. read more

I just left this place empty handed and won't ever shop here again. I was looking for some grilling supplies and a propane tank and in the aisle next to me I hear this man screaming and cussing at these two boys. At first it sounded like the kids worked there and the guy yelling was some drunk homeless man with mental health issues. So I peaked around to see if the boys needed help. The guy screaming was actually the employee. Dropping f bombs telling these kids that "this is a family business and there are kids around and you're f'ing stealing". The boys assured him over and over again that that's not what they were doing. That they were buying stuff to fix their surfboard. And the guy kept screaming cussing at them. The boys were so polite back and went up to the register and paid for the items and as they were walking out the guy bum rushed them and started cussing loud and screaming again at them. Everyone else in line were like this is insane behavior. The guy comes back inside and as I'm checking out I ask the last ringing me up "is this the owner?" And she said no. Then the guy put his hands on the counter and leans in and tries to be intimidating towards me and loudly asks me why I'm asking and tells me they are stealing from him. I said ok you're not going to start yelling me me now and said if you're so concerned about how families with kids shop here, why are you screaming the f bomb every few words and harassing these kids like this. Then he just walked off. I bring my kids here all the time and will never come back. read more

Today Hurricane Hilary is supposed to hit so I wanted to get a pump to empty some of my pool water so it doesn't overflow and create a possible flooding situation in the backyard. First thought was to go to Lowe's however fearing the thought of having to go around begging for someone at the big box hardware store to help me, I decided to first stop by Ace Hardware at this location. The following is exactly what happened. I walked in the door, the cashiers greeted me and asked me if I need help, I said I need a pump, an older gentleman employee busy at one of the close isles heard me and just said, end of isle 4 on top. Being too easy, I went to him and I started to explain what I am looking for and immediately he said end of isle 4 on top. I went to end of isle 4 and in disbelief it was actually right there, end of isle 4 on top, I got it, went to cashiers and paid for it. It took me all of 10 minutes to get exactly what I needed, no anxiety, no looking and begging for someone to help me, just east service. It was probably the best hardware store experience I have had. I am always going to go to ACE hardware first. Big box hardware stores can learn a thing or two from Ace. Thanks to the gentleman at Ace and the cashiers, I actually enjoyed my trip to find a pump today. read more

I believe in supporting small business owners especially during these times .. I bought a hose last fall.. I have not done much gardening during the winter, I started gardening in late February the hose bursts I don't think turning the water would be considered a user era.. now this hose cost 49 dollars 52ish dollars with tax I brought the hose back.. a very young man was the manager and would not replace.. the hose was least 6 month I don't think they're made to last forever. however for the price I paid for a heavy duty hose.. I have to say as a girl I absolutely love going into a hardware store. DeNault's happens to be one of my favorites you get a smile the minute you walk through that door from everyone even the customers. I find that no matter whatever I want no more whatever I need everybody in there is going to help and find a solution always and I ask 4 some weird stuff. Like making a dog gate for my balcony and how will I make it small enough for a 2-pound pup that can slide through anything because she's like a rat that has no bones. We found a solution of course because somebody took his time to walk around and help me go through down the aisles and figure something out. Where else could you get that kind of service nowhere I know of. Last week I went in because I needed to receipts that I had lost but it's very important for me to keep my receipts and Jaime he Spanish so I don't really know how to spell his name anyway he's a manager there he made sure he got them for me and I know he had to go through the back he had to go through the computer it took some time but he got them. I cannot tell you how grateful I was for that some stores will just tell you I'm sorry we can't do that I'm sorry the person who can do that isn't here today they just don't want to be bothered terrible customer service DeNault's it's not like that. Since going into business for myself, I've rediscovered family owned businesses. I'm very price sensitive - heck I'm from New England - we are all cheap - um I mean frugal. What I've found though, is that it doesn't save money in the long run if the service stinks. DeNaults is run by the DeNault brothers I'm told and I know I go to church with one of them. My friend's husband grew up with them and because of that I decided to give them a try. This is my new favorite store to shop. Decorations, paint, keys made properly (I'm in the vacation rental management business so keys are a big deal) - paint from someone who gives a rip! I have been a long time fan of DeNault's since moving to OC in 2000. I try to buy local whenever possible, and I go out of my way to refer friends to good companies who earn a good reputation. I had an experience here on Sunday, June 7 that left a bad taste in my mouth, and has caused me to shift my spending to other outlets for hardware. I pulled into the parking lot at 5:55 pm. As I was walking from my truck to the door, another customer, leaving the building said, "you'd better hurry, they're kicking everybody out in 3 minutes." I chuckled and walked into the store. As I cleared the threshold, I noticed they closed on Sunday at 6pm. They had the sliding doors open, but were visibly agitated at seeing me walk through the door so close to closing time. I was seeking charcoal for my BBQ, and a grill brush to facilitate making some tasty fresh Lingcod tacos. The staff of three; older man, younger man and younger woman, all stood near the main entrance, clearly counting down the seconds to 6:00 pm. I shopped quickly, grabbing my items and making my way to the register, which had another person just wrapping up their transaction. I was rung up efficiently and paid my $60+ tab. While I was paying, another customer approached from outside the store and pushed the now closed doors open. He asked, "are you guys closed?" The older man made a bee line to the door and exclaimed, "Yes, we close at 6 on Sundays." The older man closed the doors, then turned back toward his two co-workers, shaking his head, and mocked the customer for being so bold as to open a closed door. None of this is that terrible, really. Grumpy and poorly trained employees exist everywhere, and it's not beyond reason to want to go home after a long day on the job. My issue is with the attitude displayed prominently and clearly to at least 4 people who showed up near the closing time, with money in hand to buy things. The issue I had was the lack of care the employees showed for the people who pay their wages. The cashier even admitted that if he owned the store, he'd stay open longer. This was no consolation to me, as I was being run out of the store. I'm saddened by this development, and I will reluctantly take my money to Lowe's or Home Depot from now on. read more

They have a very good selection of hardware supplies, odd, hard to find and older replacement plumbing parts, sprinkler repair parts and a decent lawn and garden shop for small to medium sized projects. They also have cleaning supplies and a home good section (but haven't spent much time there). Don't Try Taking Anything Back To This Place, Even if it is Defective! Over the Years, I have had this experience several times with them... I bought a defective plumbing part and had the receipt. It was an intimidating experience just trying to get my money back from them for something under $10 that did not even Work, Even with a Receipt. They also have these Big, Creepy "Big Brotherish" Cameras above the check stands on a post above each register in the place. This hardware store has a good nut and bolts isle.
