I've been coming here to have keys cut for my business for a year now and the service is lacking, to put it lightly. The gal working the counter is curt and not very helpful. Expect to wait about ten minutes for someone to hopefully show up and cut keys, then give up and track someone down yourself. There are old workers milling around the store doing inventory and chatting, but none of them have time to help cut some keys? Look, I get it, cutting keys by hand is tedious, time consuming, and probably annoying. But telling a customer that "it's a lot of work, I can do it later" is not a good way to run a business and retain a customer. I'm happy to drive a little further to find someplace that's more willing to help. read more

I love going into this shop, in a way it feels like stepping back into the 1980s-or maybe even earlier.The old-timey feel and staff of the place makes it welcoming and the staff are super helpful for finding stuff. I went in the other day just to find some tiny screws, and they have a huge selection-better than Home Depot, and you can get someone who actually knows what they're talking about to help you find some random screws that cost $0.26 cents each. Where do you get that kind of service nowadays? The shelves are packed with just about everything you need for any kind of small or medium project around the house. This place never fails to have what I'm looking for, and the service is amazing. EVERY ONE there knows where everything is and they can even advice you on how to best complete your project. It always has what I'm looking for. Often times it has what I didn't even know that I needed. It's got a great little home decor/gift shop section as well. Prices run a little higher but it's worth NOT having to go to Home Depot and leaving with only 1 of 3 items you needed and having to run to Denaults afterwards anyway. I love Denaults. They also can replace/remake your broken screens (which I've had done and was completely happy with). They cut keys for you....you know you need to go have that done - take them to Denaults! I evacuated from the wildfires in Los Angeles and am staying in SJC. I called this store to ask if they could donate any masks for me to distribute to people impacted by the wildfires when I return home. The owner was very rude over the phone, refusing to donate a single mask, which is worth about 50 cents. He promptly hung up on me after saying no. The previous employee I spoke with mentioned that masks were flying off the shelves. This leads me to believe that the owner is far more interested in making a profit than helping the countless people who have lost their every belonging. I needed rope for my flag pole, this was a job my dad used to do all the time. Unfortunately, he passed away last year. I asked one of the store "experts" for help and some advise as to how do you change the rope. His answer to me was " don't you have a man to help you ?" My answer was no I don't and he said well then just google it and walked away! I guess I must look like I'm too stupid to change a rope on the flag pole by myself. read more

The real value here is the knowledgeable and available staff. Its great to be able to go in with a problem and have an expert be able to tell me how to solve it and what I need to buy. For my limited requirements (general house handyman stuff) this fits perfectly. Unlike the big box stores, there is always someone available. When needed they will find the right person (expert) to give me the information I need. Unlike the big box stores the person actually knows what they are talking about. The people who work here are extremely knowledgeable. Thanks to them: 1. My drains remain clear (even in my daughters shower) 2. I have the right lightbulbs in each room (I got a 30 minute detailed lecture) 3. Anything hanging on my walls can handle the weight correctly. 4. My paint matches when I touch up. 5. My tool bag has the right tools in it. 6. I have the right tool bag. 7. My showers are free of lime, hardwater and rust 8. My car leather looks awesome. I could go on but you get the point. The selection is clearly smaller than some other stores. But I go here to get 'help' and not just to buy things. For someone like me this place is perfect. read more

I have had terrific experiences at Denaults in San Juan Capistrano. Nestor, One of the Denault's employees reworked a table lamp so that it became a 3 way lamp. It involved cutting a stem snd removing the old mechanism to replace it with the new mechanism. I have been going to Denaults in SJC for almost 20 years. Good selection of most hardware and other items to save a trip to a Big Box retailer 10 miles away. The staff is very helpful and pretty creative when you need to find or fix something. The front desk cashiers are great, especially Patti. PS their knife sharpening service on Wednesdays are great. We have been taking our knives to Denaults for about 10 years and their sharpening person is a pro. read more

Shopped here for years and years. This store has been here since I've lived in the United States. This place, in my opinion is the my favorite hardware store. It's a San Juan Capistrano gem that CAN'T be replaced with a big box store. The staff are so friendly. This hardware store always amazes me, came here looking for a fuse for my fan, it was a small fuse kind of like the ones for Christmas lights. I didn't think they would have any or would know what I was talking about, but as soon as I said what I was looking for they knew right away what it was. They pointed me in the right direction and showed me where they were and explained the difference between the different sizes. I was very surprised to see that they knew all that and even more surprised that they had them in stock and not in a big case but I had the option of getting any amount I needed. The best part was they were only .85 cents each!!! It can't get any better than that. I definitely recommend this place to anyone and will definitely be back for more items. I used to LOVE Ace Hardware in HB. Shopped there 2-3 times a week cuz thier items were so fun. Moved to DP and figured I would love this store, too. The staff are great, with the exception of one elderly checkout clerk. Every time I would get stuck in her line she would ask me for a photo ID to use my credit card. I found this insulting so I kept going there but would avoid her line. One day I purchased a plastic box container, very narrow, took it home but it was too wide for the spot on my fence, so I returned the next day to return it. The Manager then, a middle aged Hispanic man, was nothing short of rude to me and demanded the receipt. I explained that I had purchased it on my credit card and they should have record of it. He seemed to be looking at me very suspiciously, I felt, He refused to refund or credit my card and forced me to take a "gift card" for the refund. I will now never shop at this place ever, and I was hoping to make it my regular stop. As a homeowner here in DP, I now will drive to WM or Lowes in SC instead. read more

I went in to return something with a clerk (he was bald and has an Australian accent I believe ) who had helped me before and they didn't fit in my house. He started RANTING saying he's never met me before and didn't help me which isn't the point. Then he laughed in my face and said "what kind of stupid people are you hiring? What kind of stupid house do you have?" I could believe how unstable he was acting it was bizarre. He has to be under the influence of something because his reaction was NOT normal. He also told me I place the fire alarms on top of the ones I have. Which was a complete guy. My handy man told me I need to screw them into the wall and they wouldn't fit in the places I needed to attach them to. I was so scared and creeped out by him I didn't even put my address or phone number because I was honestly so scared to even come in contact with this freak. Management needs to address this with him ASAP before he scares other customers. I'll never go back here again. read more
