Bass Oslo - Skorsonnerot (80kr): not bad

Oh my goodness it was a cultural experience. I'm used to restaurants being busy but in Bass Oslo everyone was not busy... They were enjoying themselves. I've never experienced that before.

First the wine list, wine by the glass all start from 100kr & above and most wine by the bottle are from 500kr onwards... As for the menu, guess what, its the "sharing concept" thing which has been such popular for the past 2 years in Oslo. They offer very limited 7 choices that changes whenever... On my visit, there were 3 meat, 3 seafood and 2 vegetables. We were recommended to share at least 5 dishes between 2 person. So, we had the following: 1) fritert kylling (similar to chicken karaage) 65kr: salty & boring 2) Rå kveite (halibut ceviche) 110kr: overpowering oyster sause that make it more fishy 3) Skorsonnerot (some kind of root vege) 80kr: gruyere sauce was good but just boring 4) Rå ytrefilet (carpaccio sirloin) 150kr: very balanced & one of the best 5) Torsk (cod) 110kr: one of the worst & a waste of a good piece of cod due to the bad mushroom sauce. Overall, the food were mainly salty drenched in heavy sauces (some are reuse in other dishes) to cover up their mediocre food. Here's something for the owner to consider... If you are charging so high with such limited menu and putting so much sauce in your dishes, why dont you even offer some bread on the table so we can at least wipe off those sauces from the plate and at the same time fill up our tummy with the bread??? Extra Note: The interior seems unfinished with minimal ecstatic with bright light throughout the restaurant with no ambiance, thus, not a place for romantic dinner. You will find some random and unrelated portraits like Jerry Seinfeld & wheelchair bound Christopher Reese in the bathroom which i thought it's a bit morbid and bad taste for a restaurant...

It's really long and walking from one end to the other does take a couple of minutes. There is a very long bar in the center and lots of tables along the length of the bar. They also serve food but I did not try the food here. They have a huge list of craft beers and cocktails and will also make you something on request. The staff were nice and friendly albeit a bit slow. The atmosphere is really nice and it's warm and cozy in here. A nice place to stop for a drink while in town. You can also go and get some nibbles upstairs in the food market when open.

Well apart from it winning in the length, I really like this place. It has a cosy atmosphere with its dim lighting, wooden touches and long tables. I like that the bar is long and no queues are really formed. You can order food at the bar as well. Have not tried it but looked delicious. They have an interesting variety of beers and one can find a beer for each taste. However a good cocktail menu is not missing. I love all the little signs that are hanging all around with funny quotes like this one: "if you are not drunk by 2 am how will all your friends know that you love them!". Great place for a chill beer. Look for the program as well as they often have live music.

Very tasty food. We had the shared platter, so we got to taste all the meats and five of the sides…read more My favorites would be the pulled pork and chicken Maryland. The chicken wings are tiny. The pork rib was super tender. I wonder if they maybe make it in a sous vide, because the fat wasn't really melted into the meat. Other than that, wonderful! They did mess up our order, and gave on at our table a coleslaw instead of the beetroot salad. When we told him, the waiter took the beet root from the shared platter, and gave the rest of us the coleslaw. But we already had one, so now the shared table had two coleslaws and no beetroot. Not good. We told them, and eventually got a beet root salad at the end of the meal. For the sides, I'd recommend the mac n cheese, sweet potato, and the beetroot salad. The beans are ok, but not that special. The cornbread is yummi! They have an impressive beer selection! Unfortunately they were out of a couple of my favorites - Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (on draft!) and Dales Pale Ale. Luckily they had really good similar beers - Rudie Session and Modus Hoperandi. The service was good. I wished they knew more about beer given the large selection, but at least they tried. The place has a nice atmosphere, and we ended up staying for hours. You should go here, and you should eat the chicken or pulled pork, and share a mac n cheese, beetroot salad, and corn bread.

So we read reviews on yelp and based on that we tried it. Worst decision EVER!…read moreThe catfish burger: the catfish is a fish cake with possibly a hint of fish somewhere. Came with small prawns in a thousand Island style sauce. Just bad. The herring: somehow this was sweet. We couldn't bear to finish it. The raw yolk made it just tolerable. The liver pate. This was toasted. In fact grilled & tasted more like blood sausage. Was ok. Just ok. The duck. Just awful! Dry, rubbery. Not a single redeeming feature to this dish. All dishes were served with pan fried mushrooms and tinned/pickled chopped beetroot, gherkins, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes & olives all from a jar came with the duck. Even the bread & salad were bland. The elk burger is no more. In short AVOID this place unless everything else is shut and you are prepared to spend KOR180 on a bad dish of food!

They have a truly astounding assortment of Aquavit and servers who know all about it and can explain the differences for the curious tourist. A bit in the pricier side but well, well worth it. The ambiance was to die for. We sat outside but in the winter the interior, full of mellow candlelight and awesome kitch in the walls (including a walk full of antique guns and swords) would do a lot to keep out the cold and make one feel warm and blissful. A great find!!
