Good beers on tap, and good cocktails to chose from. For food, we got a kiddie pasta and Pasta Selvatica, which had reindeer meat in it. Service was quick and food arrived within 20-mins of ordering. Noise levels were on the lower end. Their outdoor seating had heat lamps at every table, so it was fairly comfortable to sit outside even on a relatively colder day in Oslo. read more

Planned to eat somewhere else but it turned out to be closed on Mondays, so remembered seeing this place the day before with an attractive long covered circular porch in front so came here instead - seems to be part of the old cathedral complex. Good choice as the environment is very pleasant, although in the afternoon parts of the porch will be in the sun. They have an inside dining room too but quite small so just about all diners are out on the patio/terrace. We had salmon pasta and Ceasar salad with chicken. Both very good although the ceasar dressing is basically just creamy ranch. But it's tasty and the salad very fresh with nice ingredients. Not cheap as nothing in Oslo is - for two dishes plus a beer and water came to about $70. read more

This just became one of my favorite restaurants I have been to in a while! To start off their staff is very friendly and ready to be at your service. Being in Oslo I was left with no choice but to try some Reindeer meat and it was very very good. Both me and my fiancé got the Renna dish which consisted of grilled to your liking Reindeer meat with potatoes, seasoned vegetables, lingonberry jam and brown cheese sauce. I've never had any reindeer meat or atleast don't remember having any so didn't know what to expect. After having my first bite not only it didn't have any weird or gamey taste but was absolutely delicious, well seasoned, very east to cut and great to enjoy. For added flavor I dipped the meat in the brown cheese sauce that was on the side which was outstanding! The inside is also very cozy, relaxed and warm. Tables which are by the big windows are especially nice since while eating you can see the outside. Not to mention this restaurant hence the name is right on the other side of the Oslo Cathedral. This place has so many tables both inside and outside so if you're looking for a place to walk in, I would definitely recommend it. I was able to try reindeer meat for the first time here and I was pleasantly surprised - kind of gamey, but went really well with the pasta. Minus 2 stars for the food : My friend ordered a fish soup and the fish wasn't fresh. On top of that it was very heavy. It's been 2 hours since we left and his stomach is started to make crazy noise. He doesn"t feel very well. Connect the dots... I had the Cathedral Burger. The meat was well done - as per request - but the tast was super strong ! It's like the beef was still alive in my plate. I had to add a huge amount of ketshup to cover the taste. I was very hungry but I couldn't finish. Minus 1 star for the experience : A restaurant is a place you trust will serve you tasty quality ood. The restaurant manager should understand and take into consideration that a customers' bad opinion can lead to the end of a business. Word of mouth is strong. My friend and I ate here for Sunday brunch before leaving Oslo. We had a very relaxed, slow-paced meal. The service was very casual, which was appropriate for the time and day we went. The smoked salmon and scrambled eggs I ordered came with two slices of whole wheat bread and a small salad. I was surprised at how clean and simple the food was: the salad was not overly sauced, the salmon was tasty, and the eggs were fluffy. I happened to be walking by and I didn't feel like searching for food, so I figured I would give it a try. They have great outdoor seating on a corner with a section for smokers and non smokers. It was busy outside so I chose to sit inside. They gave me a nice cozy spot. Service was phenomenal ! The staff took my order quickly and my food came out quickly. I've never had fish soup, so I have nothing to compare it to, but my soup was excellent! It was so good and filling. I never have had moose sausage and I got that and it was good. I ate at Cafe Cathedral last night for dinner. I had intended to go somewhere else that I found on Yelp, but it turns out they're either closed or had moved. Anyhow, I found Cafe Cathedral and figured I'd try them out. I came in and saw a sign to sit anywhere and they'd come take my order. So I found a free table and had a seat. Shortly thereafter, a waitress came over with a menu. She was polite and spoke English well. After a few minutes of looking at the menu, the waitress returned and I ordered the Mix Grill and a Ringnes Pilsner. She brought the pilsner out pretty quickly. Like most alcohol in Norway, the beer was a bit pricey -- something like 40kr for a 0.33L glass which works out to around $6-7. Nonetheless, it was decent beer and a refreshing treat after a day of travel from the US. My food came out relatively quickly. Fast, but not so fast as to wonder if they actually cooked it fresh. The Mix Grill came with a small mixed green salad, mediterranean style rice, a cup of rather tasty tzatziki-style sauce, and several types of meat including beef, lamb, and chicken. Some were on skewers, some were not. Overall, the flavors were well balanced. For middle-eastern food, I found it a bit under-spiced; however, it's possible that the flavors were tempered for the Scandinavian palate. The waitress stopped by shortly after bring out my meal to ask how the food was. When I was finished, she came over to take my plate and asked if I needed anything else. When it came time to pay, she brought over my check and the credit card machine. Contrary to a previous review, they do indeed accept AMEX now. The waitress helped me use my card. Since I speak nearly no Norwegian, I couldn't read any of the prompts. Most places are not very used to American swipe+sign credit cards. In general, most folks here use chip+PIN cards. They had no trouble letting me sign here though. Overall, I found Cafe Cathedral to be a decent dinner spot with a well-balanced menu and very friendly staff. Prices seemed a bit high -- even for Oslo, but I enjoyed my dinner, so what more can I ask for? read more

What a great place to either grab a drink or sit and have an excellent meal. Our first night in Oslo we ate here and our last we did as well. The grilled reindeer is a must, a true Norwegian meal! We found it hard to find places for breakfast that served more than just pastries and opened before 10am until we found Cafe Cathedral. The Cafe Lattes were very large and served piping hot! I had the ham and cheese omelette and my husband had the eggs and bacon. Both were served with fresh bread and salad. The food was delicious and service was friendly. We were the only ones in the cafe but it may be due to the holiday period. The building is nice with a great spot to people watch. read more

Many places do not want to seat parties of three we are finding. Not here. We got a nice table by the window. My daughter had a plain cheeseburger and fried potatoes. Good and plenty. Not amazing but it would probably be better the way they serve it. They ran out of the two traditional cakes yesterday. A good sign but means we had alternatives. We came here on our first night in Oslo which was Christmas Eve's eve. The city was pretty much dead and not a lot was open. This place was and thankfully had an open table. It's a small space and while I'm not claustrophobic it was a bit too tight for me. My boyfriend had the moose stew and I had the fish soup. Both were awesome. The fish soup was more of a chowder and after having travelled to both New England and the Pacific NW this chowder is easily one of the best if not the best I've had. As far as the food, I was pretty hesitant on Norwegian fare to begin with and this place didn't change my mind at all. The eggs were the best part, the salad had some not so fresh parts and the salmon was fairly average especially for this part of the world. My buddy tried to play it safe and get the burger but that thing was a disaster lol. It should have come in a soup bowl, the burger itself was incredibly greasy and then they added literally a half cup or so of aoli on top and the whole thing was just a soaking wet.
