This co-op brewery is located downtown and is mainly indoors (as far as I know). Both times I've been here, service has been great. If you're in a group, they can split checks individually. The food menu isn't too exciting. I had a cup of fish chowder ($6) and some of my friend's fries. The fries ($6) are surprisingly a highlight. They do a great job making them crispy on the outside. I would've just ordered fries and skipped the chowder instead had I known. If you follow them on Instagram, you can get a free pour added to your flight (normally 4 pours for $11). Currently my go-to beer is the Consummate Rioter (pretty solid IPA). I think they have events per day of the week that seem interesting to check out. Sunday is board game day! read more

A warm and inviting local brewpub near Boston Common, Democracy serves up delicious craft beer and good food in a wonderful setting. Their Consummate Rioter IPA is one of the best I've had in a long time, and their Old Belfry Pumpkin Ale was rich and flavorful. Both paired well with the restaurant's Beer Burger and a side of fries. Unfortunately, some of the brewery's most popular beers had kicked on the recent Saturday afternoon I visited. I REALLY wanted to try their Suffragette Pale Ale and their Workers Pint Kolsch, but both were unavailable. In fact, 4 of the 7 brews listed on the pub's board had kicked by the time I arrived for a late lunch, and my server had no idea when they would be available again. I'll happily give Democracy another try the next time I'm in Boston, but their lack of selection cost them a star on this initial visit. read more

This is a decent place to get drinks, and the food is hearty and reasonably priced. There's never a long line, never too loud or too crowded. Reviews are all hype! The location and atmosphere are top-notch but the beer is mediocre at best. With all the micro / craft breweries around, this beer is sub par. trillium, harpoon and others are all close by and are superior. Hopefully this joint steps it up and doesn't rely on its location. Everybody deserves a second chance and this place does as well. read more

I am so excited this brewery has opened. There aren't any in the downtown area south side of the Charles except for this place. It has a cool medieval ambience with large tables and good for groups. They have a kitchen so you can get food as well while you're gargling down their delicious beer. Definitely coming back to this place! read more

This place is just meh. We were excited to find out that there was a brewery located downtown. We love beer and love supporting local businesses. What made this a meh experience was the service. The bartender was unfriendly and inattentive. We waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged by the bartender and there was only 2 other patrons at the bar when we arrived. After finally getting served, it took a long time to put in a food order and get another drink. We ordered a flight, a couple pints, and chicken wings. Note that the chicken is good, but the buffalo flavor isnt your franks blend. It's a homemade, grainy sauce that I immediately regretted getting. The quick low down- the beer is ok. The food is ok. The service sucked. wish this place was better and had a friendly atmosphere. We visit a lot of breweries and friendly banter and attentive service by the bartenders are the things that usually guarantee a return visit. We got our mass craft brewery stamp and probably wont be back. read more

Tried out this spot with my good gal pal on a Sunday afternoon. Shockingly, it was empty, but I assume that's because this place just opened up not too long ago! Very spacious spot, with a long bar and tons of tables. The beer itself was pretty solid, but they had a limited selection, so much that my friend didn't order. Great prices for these too. The food fell very short. Nachos - sparse, with little cheese and very dry chicken. The salsa atop was very bland. Pretzel - Like the ones you get at a stand in Boston Common or TD Garden, nothing special. French fries - Cmon, they weren't even crispy! I'm admittedly not much of a beer guy, but this place is still worth visiting. I did have the saison, and enjoyed it just fine, but I absolutely LOVED the burger and fries. It was a bit disappointing that they were out of all of the hand pies (which sounded so good), but the B-B-B-Beerger hamburger was outstanding. Fried pickles, beer aioli, bacon, cheese... really, what could be bad? And the fries were honestly the best I've had in Boston - perfectly crisp, still tasting like actual potato. So good! We did also have dessert, and while they were also out of ice cream for the stout floats (ouch), we did try the bread pudding and lemon rosemary tart. The tart was okay, but I'm not a big fan of lemon or rosemary. Bread pudding is usually one of my favorite. Unfortunately, this one was way too true - a nice caramel whisky sauce or something would be great. Considering this place is brand new and already really good, I expect them to only get better - and hopefully to try the items they were unable to make. Go check them out! read more

I'm in love with this physical space- there's an actual snug (small private room at the end of the bar)! Not only did it transport me back to Ireland where snugs in pubs are a thing, but it was really practical as well- our group of 6 were able to close the main door and actually hear ourselves talk amid the din of the brewery, plus had direct access to the bar and the friendly bartenders via a smaller door underneath the stained glass. This feature alone is worth a visit. But beyond the snug, the space is exactly what you're looking for when you want to kick back with a cold one and catch up with some friends. It's got a beer hall vibe, with tall ceilings, cool chandeliers, long common tables in the middle and private tables along the wall, a large window (wall?) that opens to the street, no (or minimal?) TVs, and a general convivial vibe that welcomes all. Also, the staff were all really friendly and attentive (especially Greg our bartender), and they seemed to really care about Democracy (makes sense since this is a co-op). I wish more places felt like this in Boston. I had the flight to try all 4 of their current beers, and I thought they were all fairly decent and easily drinkable- nothing groundbreaking or amazing here (you won't come *just* for the beer), but they weren't totally disappointing either. Their food also wasn't perfect but has promise- my bowl of haddock chowder started out deliciously (rich and smoky with plenty of fish pieces and potatoes), but finished way too salty. I thought the nachos were tasty- tortilla chips topped with some pulled smoked chicken and apple salsa, with a side of beer cheese to pour over- but they could use some more toppings, and if you consider them nachos you will be disappointed (as IMO something called 'nachos' require melted cheese and tons of toppings- maybe just call them chips n' cheese instead?). The pizza bagel, pretzel, and burger were all solid, and the flavor and crispiness on the fries was great but they were too greasy. So, some minor tweaks here and there, and they'd have a stellar menu. read more

The oven baked beet fries are truly decadent - be sure to try them. Staff was very friendly during our visit. The space is open and features large tables to accommodate big groups or to allow socializing. Decor is proto-revolutionary, in a good way. Wide beer selection brewed on the premises. Democracy Brewing is really a remarkable addition to Boston, let alone the downtown area. Let me address where this place shines, in no particular order: 1. The BEER. Hot damn. I have been here 4 times so far, and have started with a beer flight each time, followed up by a pint of whatever my favorite happened to be in that flight. All these beers are very well-crafted and you can taste the quality. They had two sours on the menu recently (one was gone the last time I went) that were just phenomenal, both in their own right, and that's really cool to see. 2. The service. Every single interaction I've had here with part of their team has been exceptional. Really great service, and you know your beer is being poured by someone who is very knowledgeable about it. 3. The atmosphere. Hard to believe this brewery is in what used to be Windsor Buttons, a longtime (you guessed it) button supply store. I love the ambiance here, it's really unique, beautiful and relaxing. Definitely a nice enough place for a date, but also comfortable enough to just hang out at. 4. The food. Really that should say "the FRIES" because, good GOD, are they good. They are the crispiest fries, perfectly seasoned and delicious. I recommend getting a side of beer aioli, if you're into that, as it elevates an already amazing plate of fried potatoes. The burger is also fantastic here, and the nachos aren't much to look at but are actually quite delicious. I'm hoping to try more of the menu soon. I normally don't write reviews this detailed, but Democracy deserves it. Don't snooze on this and leave it to the tourists, this is definitely a place for the locals as well, and I hope it stays for a long time. read more

Recommend! Had a great time here celebrating a friend's birthday. The beers on tap were great and they had a varied selection - I'm a big fan of sour beers and was very happy they had one on tap! We happened to be there while they were doing a sing along! There was a piano player and song books about the bar and you could select any song in the book. There is also a menu of bar eats you can order from. My group only got the pretzel and it was pretty good. It came with three different choice of dippers. There was Mac and cheese walking around that looked AMAZING though. I'm coming for you Mac and cheese. Will return. read more

Fantastic atmosphere! A really cool combination of an old revolutionary flare with modern spacing and openness. It has great rustic details in the exposed brick, light fixtures, and paint details but is spacious and well lit. You can tell that if this place was really crowded it might be too loud for conversation but with a moderate crowd or in one of the out-cove booths it's perfect. The beers on tap are great and light, very drinkable but they could be a little colder. Since this place is just starting up I'm sure they will grow in selection and quality to be perfect. Tried the pizza bagel and lamb pie both were very good, great flavor though the pizza had more oil than I like but I think that was embracing the ratatouille inspiration for the flavor. Plus they have a philanthropic streak with #alesforals ad who doesn't love that!? Definitely worth checking out and keeping an eye out on this new place! We enjoyed Democracy Brewing. All four beers in the flight were delicious. We especially enjoyed the cherry sour. Our favorite choices in food were the cauliflower appetizer, chicken and waffle sandwich, and the DB burger (my DD wants to return just for the burger). The wait staff was so friendly despite being short handed. They had a hard time refilling water...maybe should just put a pitcher at the table. Hard times. read more

This spot is super cool. It has high ceilings and is quite spacious with plenty of seating. The ambience is rustic and industrial. The decor has lots of character. I came here on a Tuesday and sat at the bar. The bartender was awesome and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. While the beers were not hoppy enough for my preference, the beers were brewed with serious skill and care. And I like the pale ale enough to order a few. I met a friend here for happy hour. I ordered the pizza bagels. I ordered three half bagels, one of each of their options: Mozzarella and tomato, sausage and broccoli, and pineapple and ham. My friend ordered the pretzel bread. Everything was pretty good. I never find a place with pizza bagels, so it was nice to see that on the menu. While I enjoyed it, the bagels could have been softer and fresher. Regardless, this spot is awesome. I had a really fun time. I highly recommend coming here for drinks. Great place for a happy hour. read more

I've been living in Boston for a couple of months, but haven't had much time to explore the downtown area. Thanks to our Veterans, I had all day yesterday to walk around the city with no care in the word. I took the T to Downtown Crossing and was surprised to find a brewery right across the street. What began as a long stroll around the city turned into a short jaunt across the street to a barstool to enjoy a pint. I was pleasantly surprised at the tastiness of the two beers I was recommended by the bartender. Both the 1919 Strike Stout (light, fluffy, delicious) and the Little Scarlet IPA (full bodied, dark, little sweet) beers were to die for. I would go back just to enjoy either of these beers back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back. I also enjoyed a grilled chicken sandwich with avocado, as a millennial does, but found that the French fries on the side were worth the full price of the meal. What a delicious treat! I will be back.. probably on my lunch break. read more

This place has everything it needs to be really good, now if the service wasn't terrible. Food was great and drinks were good. The staff could be better. Came in to eat and get a drink and they have open seating, which was full. That's fine but as we grab a drink the server gets upset cause we aren't in the right area even though there is nowhere else to go, and we move away with or drinks about 5 ft and get dirty looks. Eventually a table opens up and we go to seat ourselves and someone slides in before we can, also that's fine. So we wait some more and get a table no big deal. Our server comes and informs me that I need to close my tab as the bar and food are separate entities, also fine, but as I go to do that the same nasty server as before is sitting on the bar and once again tells me I'm in the wrong spot but never tells me where to go and says to someone else she had a problem with me before. Just wish the server was working instead of sitting on the bar drinking with friends. Also had to ask 2 times for water. read more

I went here last night and enjoyed the food and beer. I would have given this place 4 stars if I had written my review last night. However, I did not write my review last night. This morning I woke up feeling sick to my stomach. I asked the other people in my group who had eaten there with me, and eaten the same thing. They both did not feel well this morning. So its not just me! I almost puked but luckily did not puke. Therefore this place is getting 2 stars. This place gets really packed after work. We had to wait 40 min for a table. They only take reservations for parties of 6 or larger. Good thing you can wait at the bar. You can also see huge beer tanks when you enter, so you know that they brew it there and that you are getting fresh beer. They classify the beer on the menu by beer type- Hoppy, Wheat, Seasonal, Malty/ Dark, Light. This was great because I knew which sections to drill down into and which ones to ignore. You can also do beer flights. TIP: Check in with your Yelp app. If you do a beer flight, you can get an extra pour added to your flight for free! I tried the following: Malty/Dark section: Kind of an amber. This was malty and slightly sweet, and was not bitter at all. Seasonal: Old Belfry, Autumn spiced ale. This beer had cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger and all spice. This beer will bring out the #basicness in every girl. Hoppy: Consumate Rioter. I am not a fan of IPAs, I found this quite bitter. But if you like hoppy beers, you will like it. After waiting for some time, the host came to find us and took us to our table. We sat at a long communal bench, which you will share with other people. It almost felt like Oktoberfest in Munich where you sit at long tables. There are also smaller individual tables around the room. We decided to order some food once we sat down. The menu has a variety of burgers, sandwiches and mac n cheese. I saw some people order the mac n cheese- it looked really good. We started off with boneless wings. The honey hot sauce is deceivingly spicy, it is actually spicier than the house hot. There is a slight honey kick to it. The wings came in really small pieces, and were not crunchy. I was hoping they would be resemble the wings from Wings Over Boston / Wings Over Somerville / Wings Over "fill in your city". For our main course, we had the Beerger. The beerger has hop pickles, beer mayo, bacon, beer bun and fries. Everything here is made from scratch except the ketchup. We all had different preferences for the burger. My friend and I chose medium, another person got it medium rare. The waiter showed up with 3 burgers and had no idea what style each burger was cooked in. Well, I got a well done burger while my friend got a rare burger. We don't know what the other person got, he ate his burger and did not care. The burger was decent. I enjoyed the fries more. I have to end my review here because I feel sick and need to go to the bathroom. read more

Good beer, nice simple menu, and a nice little vibe. Happy to have something different in the neighborhood! We made it to Democracy the week is the soft opening - and I am glad that we did as I expect it to be busy in due time. The service was good, the beers were good as well, and they have a delicious pretzel that will lure me back again and again. My only recommendation would be serving the pretzel with the beer cheese that came with the nachos. Everyone loves pretzels and beer cheese, right? The onion dip with the pretzel was quite good too though. I would suggest some house chips or something too with that. Could be another simple snack. We also had the fries, a side salad and the Hawaiian pizza bagel. No complaints. The staff was also looking for feedback - which is the hallmark of a business that is aiming to please their customers. They get brownie points for this.
