Concise review: 5 Stars.
Pros: Extraordinary superior hospitality for take-out/impromptu "dine-in"
Open from 7PM til 2AM, 7 days a week
Offers the convenience of free(!) delivery in their area with minimum $15 order
Sushi is priced average despite their delivery nature (Philly Roll was $7, expected it to cost more)
Con (minor):
Sushi was good considering the late-night delivery nature - rice was a little dry when I visited, but definitely not horrible for what you pay.
Footnote:
This is not a dine-in place. If you decide to try by impromptu if you find this place by yelp, you'll have to wait outside or in your car. But, when you order from them just outside their kitchen, you'll be pleased with their hospitable service.
In-depth review: 5 Stars for such notable & rare hospitality & convenience
You're eating (from) here for the convenience of late-night sushi by delivery: few places offer the convenience of sushi at night past 9:30PM, from 7PM until 2AM, especially in a place like La Jolla. Fewer places also warrant a review from me due to a single visit - they would have to evoke such a polarizing response, either negative or positive. It was the later, thankfully.
While this place is renown for its late night deliveries, particularly among college students, I drove to this place with my friends who also needed to fix their sushi craving past 10PM. Found this place on Yelp, and was pleasantly surprised with their service. While their sushi is decent for the price, I was very pleased with the workers hospitality. Clearly this joint wasn't meant for dine-in, like a small pizza joint that lacks seating or any ample space, but they still had menus and even delivered to us while we waited in our car. They gave complimentary miso soups and were very amicable, despite the language barrier, or for lack of a more concise PC term, their "FOBishness". Their hospitality was so noteworthy that I tried tipping them even though I simply "dined-in", yet they insisted that it was quite alright. I did not relent, and so they obliged. They even gave complimentary water bottles when simply asked for water.
Really, I was so impressed by their extraordinary hospitality that I'm giving them a full 5 stars. The average-priced sushi isn't mind-blowing, but really, you can't expect everything from a $$-priced late-night sushi place that offers free delivery. Will definitely drop by again sometime for my sushi cravings when all other places have already closed.
My Review Guidelines:
Basically, I'm rating bang for the buck. Typically, I don't like to judge from a single visit and prefer to aggregate experiences for a more informed review, unless the place is extremely polarizing, either positively or negatively. My Star Ratings are relative to the Price ($) of a restaurant; a 4-star rating at Ruth's Chris Steak House wouldn't be tiered on the same quality level as, say, a 4-star at Lolita's Mexican Food due to the differences in cost. That being said, the more expensive a restaurant, the more is expected of them per Star.
5 Stars: Extraordinary Superior - The best bang for my buck. Extremely well-rounded for the cost with little to no cons during my visit(s) that can be easily forgotten or overlooked. Gunning for Dukedom if not already, would absolutely be a regular if the former is not feasible simply due to massive fanbase. Willing to shut-up and have the place take my money.
4 Stars: Superior. Very well-rounded for the cost that is offset by a few minor gripes, or polarized quality with a very trademark service or special that is offset by a notable problem or two, or some gradient in-between. Running for Dukedom if not already, definitely be a regular if the former isn't possible.
3 Stars: Average. Nothing too spectacular about it or negative about it, or a few positives marred by negatives. This is the baseline standard by which I would normally visit a place on Yelp or even become a regular/Duke.
2 Stars: Inferior. Too many problems that tarnish what qualities the place has. Would not consider visiting this place if I knew beforehand on Yelp it was like this.
1 Star: Extraordinary Inferior - this was clearly a mistake. Little to no pros, cursed by very bad service or food Probably possessed by an extreme deficiency in food or service that required an uninformed, unfortunate visit to this place. Will always warrant a complaint to the management or company. Shame on me if I visit again. read more
