Didnt want to do this review as i have been a customer of this location for over 20 years. My thanksgiving cake was decorated beautifully, thank you. It was noticeably smaller than before but i guess thats the way of consumer products now. The frosting, however is a different formula than the previous owner, tasted like shortening and sugar whipped, not the usual rich buttery frosting we have come to know and love. Please tell me you havent changed it to cut costs because quality is what brings customers back year after year. I purchased a cake for a birthday celebration. Once there to pick it up, I remembered I needed candles as it was a milestone birthday. I got two glitter number candles at $4.95 each. Ridiculous price but I thought it would add to the celebration. Got to my sisters house, dinner etc than time for the cake- the glitter fell right off coming out of the packaging. I suspect that it's bc the candles had been sitting for so long and dried up. Needless to say what was under the glitter was an ugly flesh colored candle, so we decided not to use them on the nice looking cake. We had other candles we could use that wouldn't keep crumbling on the cake. I took the never lit candles back the very next day on my way into work. I explained what happened. I was the only counter customer. The girl attending to me was very nice, but it literally took 15 minutes to get her to process a refund for about $10. She walked to 3 different places for what I'll assume is to get the approval she needed. I don't live in the area, so coming back to get a refund wasn't an option. I stayed at my sisters in the suburbs for her birthday, so the delay with the transaction caused me to be late for work in the city. It was only candles, but $10 for two candles which to me was worth returning a defective item. I don't know if they'll even bother to look at the other candles, because I suspect the whole display is probably old and will fall apart once unpacked. Further glitch, I checked my bank account today and still have not noticed the refund as having gone thru. I'll check again tomorrow, but if it hasn't happened, they'll be hearing from me. $10 bucks is ten bucks these days. 2nd half of review is for the cake. I ordered a Sacher torte. It was beautifully decorated but I thought it was absolutely not at all the consistency of a flourless chocolate cake. I've made flourless chocolate cakes at least a dozen times- they are moist and melt in your mouth. This cake was dry and hard to cut. It felt as if it had definitely been frozen. There was almost no discernible raspberry in the torte. My brother drove a bakery truck years ago for Deerfield & my mom would pick up items when she worked there. I hadn't been there in years, but decided to get my sisters cake there since she moved back to the area. I suspect this is not the Deerfield bakery of old. It smells - or rather lack of smells of a factory bakery. In other words, none of the baking is taking place there. What you are getting is no longer a quaint family bakery produced fresh item, but rather a kind of stale and mass produced factory bakery product. Your first clue to that is that there's absolutely no bakery smell around or in the place. The building is cute but I'd rather have authenticity and flavor. I won't be going back. read more

My goodness this place smells good! They have the same delicious cakes, cookies and other baked goods as their older sis* AND even have a cafe for breakfast and lunch. Uh- mazing! I decided to go the "healthy" route and order 1/2 a turkey sandwich and soup because I had a feeling I'd be leaving this bakery with a mini cake in hand. My colleague ordered the same so we kept it nice and simple for them. I also took advantage of their coffee bar and ordered my 3rd coffee (the secret to being a working mom) of the day. When the turkey sandwiches and chicken noodle soup showed up at our table the sandwich was anything, but healthy. The (delicious) pretzel roll was filled with turkey, bacon, cheese, avocado and more. And it was sooo good! They also included 2 small chocolate chip cookies, which I so didn't need, but ate 1 up. Somehow I made it out of here without buying any of their baked goods, but only because I was running super late for a work call. I have to admit I felt a bit guilty about coming home from here empty handed even though my kids had no idea where I was (if they did they'd never forgive me). Ever been to a place that made you feel like an idiot? Yeah. That happened to me here. When I first walked in, I was overwhelmed with all the different counters and endless assortments of sweets that I didn't know where to begin! Breakfast pastries over here, cupcakes over there, hot drinks in the back, cakes nearby, employees rushing around, a doughnut counter, and a stairway to more seating upstairs!? I needed to buy donuts and a slice of cake for coworkers so I picked up a tiny Styrofoam tray from a pile and grabbed various donuts, piling them up on the tiny tray. It wasn't until I stopped a worker and asked for a box that I noticed flattened cardboard boxes under the doughnut bar. Ah! They should have made that more clear. I put twelve large doughnuts in the box. Then I stood by the cakes for a few moments before someone noticed I was standing there. To my disappointment, they didn't have any slices of a chocolate cake available, so I picked out a Tiramisu. Armed with my treats, I headed over to the register (why is there only one register in this large bakery!?) and asked for Chai tea latte. While they have many different coffees (and smoothies) available, there are no such things as tea lattes here. I was disappointed. I was also disappointed to find out that dozen doughnuts also do not exist here as each doughnut is priced separately. Had I known that, I would have not bought as many. There were no signs anywhere telling me how much they were. I hesitantly forked over $16 for 12 doughnuts and a cake slice before leaving in a hurry. Even as I left I still felt confused. The doughnuts were MMMMLICIOUS! I have to give them credit for that. The red velvet doughnut was amazing, as well as the strawberry flavored ones. I ate so many doughnuts that day. I really want to go back to give this place a second try, but only when I'm willing to splurge a little bit on unhealthy breakfast treats. read more

Via former employee... Awful work experience. Sexual harassment was commonplace and did not feel safe at work. Management did not take issue seriously and the problem continued until the day I left. Soon after I started the owner's incentivized employees to write good reviews on indeed for free lunches. Three different owners with no communication since they hated each other, made every facet of my job a nightmare. Senior owner was previously sued for employee dismissal/wage issues in 2012 and continues the practice to this day at Deerfields bakery. Cakes are made in advance and stored in freezers for months as well as every other baked good. Found roaches under cookie sheets on a weekly basis, rumors abound about health inspector payoffs. During inspections the staff was instructed to hide mold and vermin evidence. Absolute lack of hygiene within establishment. Dishes were piled up overnight and hand washing stations were clogged, prohibiting use. Mangers still make minimum wage since they are promised yearly raises upon hire. Additional responsibilities are handed down to employees beyond the scope of their original employment agreement without a wage increase because management is unwilling to hire additional employees. On a weekly basis we had fellow employees leave crying due to understaffing, high expectations, and general stress just to come back the next day pretending everything was perfectly normal. Senior owner will take money out of paychecks for PTO and violate employment law just for his fellow owners to "fix the issue" without notifying him in order to maintain the status quo. Employee was fired for taking PTO that was approved by one of three owners while other owner didn't know and took money out of their paycheck, saying "the money will be given back upon return from PTO." This of course is contrary to Illinois Department of Labor laws as well as the company's own handbook. Workers would get fired and file for unemployment, just for owners to claim they were seasonal employees to deny benefits. This review will most likely be taken down because one manager has the specific task of reporting negative reviews, which I attribute to the overall high rating of this establishment. If this happens I will be sure to post again using other means. They cannot continue to get away with misconduct like this. Take it from former employee... Do not eat here, do not work here, do not roll your window down while driving by. I feel sorry for everyone that doesn't follow those recommendations. read more

This review is just for picking up a custom order in Buffalo Grove. I went to pick up my order one day within the agreed upon time after placing it on the phone. There was someone ahead of me placing an order at the specified counter and was taking a long time to decide what was wanted. 5 minutes turned into 15 minutes until I was able to be helped. I asked the other counter if they could help grab mine, it was already paid for, the answer was no I could be helped in a few mins. In this 15 minutes I observed at least 5 other customers not wearing masks (not in the seating area, they were breathing over their open pasty bar). the person ahead of me was wearing a mask below the nose and nobody asked the person to please raise it. Particular customer in front wanted to see pictures, examples behind the glass, had many questions. Fine. What was most concerning is at one point the employee brought out someone elses order and opened the box to show the particular mask below the nose customer the example. There were several employees in the back, one not wearing a mask. I tried to flag down and nobody could grab my order. If you dont care about masks/sanitary conditions, other people breathing over your food or following the rules created to keep you safe this this place will prob be fine for you. I've ordered here for over 7 years and everything has always been excellent. The bakers and decorators are truly talented and I've never had an order incorrect. 3 stars for the tasty and beautiful treats, but their customers service that day was pretty poor, and lack of following health rules pretty concerning. read more

I have been dying to try this bakery and I am so glad I did. First of all the building it's self is a old German style over sized Ginger bread house and it's super cute. As soon as you walk in you can tell this use to be a beautiful home back in the day with the original hardwood floor a huge grand stair case and the exposed beams. I am a sucker for old historic homes!!! When you walk in you become a kid in a candy shop they have a huge display case filled with goodies like cupcakes, cakes, cookies, and traditional German pastry's. In the middle is some quick grab an go items like donuts, danishes, and more. They also have a Cafe where you can order pancakes, omelets, French toast, etc. at a reasonable price and they all so do lunch items. They serve coffee, expresso, and hot chocolate and if your in a hurry they have a drive thru HOORAY!! I decided to get the apple spice donut OMG it was amazing. The donut was soft and lushes on the inside and the flavors were on point. I loved their glaze over the donut it was perfect. I can't wait to come back and try their other pastry's because if they are anything like the donuts then I have found my sweet heaven. Over all the place is super quaint and very welcoming. This has been a staple in the area since I can remember. When I was in high school, I always thought it was this special place we only could get on special occasions. That's still the case but I try to make those special occasions happen more often aka whenever I am in the area ;) So many beautiful desserts and everything is always SO good!! I customized a Jack Skellington cake . It was a 9inch 3 layered cake for $65 ish . The presentation of this cake was so sweet and scary at the same time ! I liked the cake better than the filling tbh.... we were expecting fresh raspberries but it seemed it was a jam texture .... my family loved it , definitely picture worthy ! Been going here for years with my parents . The atmosphere of the place is nice and quaint. They have good bakery items. I've tried donuts, bagels, muffins, cookies, etc. We actually mostly went here for breakfast. The flavor has changed many times but not the actual menu too much. Its gone from delicious to okay to decent. The proportions are good and the atmosphere and it's very close to the house. We love the little butter cookies you can get a small bag of a mix you pick yourself for a few dollars. They have vegetarian options and will change out vegetables or other ingredients if you want. They don't initially give real utensils and have the throwaway plastic ones but if you ask for real utensils they will provide them. They have good organic teas as an option. We have sometimes taken a loaf of bread to go. The food is overall pretty good. I mostly love the atmosphere and the bakery. They also do custom cakes which are pricey but look like good quality and detailed designs. A nice local bakery! read more

When we were local residents, this used to be our favorite bakery. Although we have moved, we recently went back to order a birthday cake. Nothing extravagant, but it was all arranged, ordered and paid for in advance. When a friend went to pick it up, Deerfield's said they did not have the order. Then they suggested that our friend was in the wrong location. As our friend was leaving, they "found" our order. After much discussion, they said they would "redo" the cake. So crisis averted. However, when we served the cake later that evening, it was the wrong cake. The icing was not what was ordered and when you cut into it, the icing all cracked and fell apart. It tasted like it was a previously frozen cake. For a $50 cake, we expected more. When we called to talk to someone the following day, we were told they would call back. Although initial calls were traded, it has been over 3 weeks and no follow up from Deerfield's. Not the kind of customer service one would expect. We are NOT impressed as they seem unorganized and distracted from their customers. Not sure we will return. read more

I ordered 6 paczki. 2 cream cheese, 2 chocolate mousse and 2 Nutella. The cream cheese and chocolate mousse were both hard on the outside and the chocolate mousse tasted like and had the consistency of vanilla pudding. The Nutella was frosted on top so not hard and crusty, but it used the same awful "chocolate mousse" filling. Really disappointed this time. I simply don't understand the rave reviews. I have had cake from Deerfield's on three occasions -- none of them were good. Last Wednesday was the last time. The cake tasted stale and the frosting tasted like Crisco and sugar rather than real buttercream. This small cake was $42 which was ridiculous considering the lack of quality. I would recommend Chicago Sweet Connections' Super Atomic Cake over anything from Deerfield. And, no I have no stake with that bakery. read more

Instead the young lady was able to take my order and said it would be ready for me on Tuesday. When I looked online the earliest day to get it would have been Wednesday. So thank you to Deerfield bakery in Buffalo Grove for being so fast and efficient in taking my order. 90th birthday parties don't come along that often and I'm glad that they were able to make my cake being that I was so close to the date. I have ordered 3-5 cakes over the years from them. In past years I was very pleased however in December I placed an order for my daughters 6th birthday cake. I paid 75$ for the custom cake only to show up on the day of and no cake could be found. THEY COMPLETELY forgot to make it. I ended up getting a cake for free but to be so incompetent to totally forget to make a 75$ cake ordered days prior is just sad. The cake was very pretty but of course not what my daughter wanted.
