UPDATE: Very good social distancing/pandemic policies. Temp checks and sanitizer, have to wait outside for appointments until called, large dividers between distanced seats, and all masking all the time. Shayne and Deep Blue Barber shop is a gem. The place is nice and minimalistic in a very thoughtful way. The scheduling online and electronic payment options are great. Shayne uses great products and always takes care of his razors. His neck shaves are a delight, and if I needed a neck shave or was up for a old school or hipster cut I would have no hesitations he'd get it right. I appreciate that he allows the options to schedule a 15 minute perimeter trim for low mulah. Shayne is professional and has taken great care to fill his shop only when a great barber such as himself will saddle up in one of the two chairs beside him. I've been coming to Shayne and Deep Blue for over four years and I've had a great experience each and every time.  In previous cities I've lived in, it's taken multiple attempts to find a barber I can trust and rely on but thanks to Shayne, my experience in Boston has been so much smoother.  Shayne also helped me figure out a new and much improved hair style and gave me a lot of great tips on different options and products that worked for my thick unruly Asian hair.  As a result, I've even learned a lot of new things about my own hair and how to better take care of it. The online scheduling has also been a huge convenience and even makes rescheduling easy.  Anytime rescheduling has been required, calls have been timely and the process has been easy. I've been here a few times and love Shayna and she always does just what I ask for and is easy to ask questions when I'm not sure! If your hair is long and you want to donate it, they have a partnership with a charity as well. My boyfriend comes here too and goes to Paul and agrees that he always does exactly what he wants (well, I think there was one time he thought it was too short, but the next day he thought it was good). A very long overdue review but I've had about 4-5 haircuts from Shayne and I have absolutely no regrets. Shayne is a really down-to-earth person who not only cuts great hair but is also great for conversations. I'm quite picky with my barbers because it's hard to find someone who can handle straight flat Asian hair. I've had several embarrassing cuts at other places because of this. But Shayne understood my concern and executed the cut flawlessly. I usually go for a sort of undercut and let the top grow to the sides kind of like a curtain hairstyle. Anyways, Shayne is certainly the best barber I've had so far and I'm sad that I'll be leaving Boston and this barber shop! Shayne is a fantastic barber! Since moving to Brookline 2 years ago, I have been seeing him regularly and never had anything less than a great cut. He does great work with clippers and shears to give me the best haircut I could ask for. I really appreciate the consistent quality that he provides. I've been going here for about 2 years now. I don't have a preference for barbers here, all 3 are great! It's a bit pricy, but you get what you pay for in atmosphere and service. Eddie is immature and lacks a certain common sense. When I got to my appointment I asked "Is it ok if I run to the restroom quickly" (I have a medical condition), to which he responded "I guess so..." (who even says that?). He proceeded to rush through my haircut, clumsily and unapologetically bumping me in the face with clippers and comb. When his next appointment showed up ~10 minutes early, he became visibly anxious and hurriedly "finished" my cut, leaving me with a trapezoidal shaped mushroom cut, that I haven't rocked since I was a kid in the 90's. When I asked him if he could take some off the sides and even out the fade (isn't that the point of a fade-blending?) he said his next client was here and there was nothing he could do. There are many, many ways to address this situation in a mature way (e.g., asking the next client to wait a few extra minutes, seeing if a coworker could finish up my cut or take the next customer while Eddie finished mine etc., etc.). Eddie did none of these things and instead blamed me for the incident in front of the entire shop saying it was my fault because I needed to use the restroom at the beginning of the appointment. Paul (not Eddie) then called me minutes after the appointment offering to fix the cut. No apology or acknowledgement from Eddie. (Paul was great, but unfortunately I'm done with this establishment for obvious reasons) Seeing others' comments on here shows me I'm not alone in feeling as though Eddie is unprofessional. It's really too bad, because the shop is cool, Paul is great, and Shayna seems super reasonable, but Eddie just brings bad energy into that entire space. read more

The true measure of the quality of a cut is its appearance after few days. This is particularly true for short cuts. As my hair grew out, the disjointed and unstructured results began to emerge. And it's all the more disappointing given the relatively high price charged. The fade I'd get at the hair stylist in the basement of the MIT COOP was superior, and half the price. So, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Could it be the decor and semblance of authenticity? Not sure, but needless to say, I'm not returning. read more

You will see that I rarely write reviews, but am so disappointed in how i was just treated that i felt compelled to. I will start off by saying that Paul gives me a good haircut. I just showed up for an appointment that i had scheduled as a "buzzcut" through their online system, not realizing it made any difference at all once i showed up there. I could not find a normal haircut since every haircut option had a "plus XXX" (i didn't see the "Barber haircut" option) I showed up and was told that i can't receive a haircut because the alotted time difference is 10 minutes. I have short men's hair that takes no more than 15 minutes to cut, most of it is done with a buzzer. I often think about the fact that it costs me $30 for a less than 15 minute haircut, but that's besides the point. I left work, drove to this barber, and was told I could reschedule for another day. I asked him if he could make an exception for an honest mistake that in all honesty would not have impacted anyone given the minimal difference in time and was just ignored. I have been a customer of Paul's for years. I have never shown up for anything but a haircut. The fact that he couldn't accommodate me was shocking, and incredibly disappointing. You would think that your local barber may have a relationship with you and cut you a break after years of being a customer and good tips...What a crappy way to treat someone. I hope the owners read this and help him become more human. read more

Went in about 3 weeks ago - I promised I'd write up a review on Yelp before I came back in, so here we go! I got a haircut from Shayna, and walked in not entirely sure what I wanted to do with my hair. I had some ideas, and bounced a few off her. I originally thought I wanted a quiff, and she then schooled me on what it was, and why I most likely didn't want one (she was right) - that was the first indication that she knew what she was doing, and equally as important, cares about her clientele. She hooked it up with undoubtedly the best haircut I've gotten, finishing up with a straight razor finish on the back of the neck. Three weeks later, it has grown out a bit, but still looks and feels great. The conversation was easy and light (most barbers are gruff and stand-offish in my past experience), and she taught me a lot about styling my hair, too. At $27, it's a no brainer. Sure, you COULD go to Supercuts, but.. Then you'd be going to Supercuts. All in all, its the best spot around for a haircut. If you want an excellent cut from and excellent barber (you do), Check out Deep Blue - just don't take my appointment spot! read more

When I moved to Brookline about 2 years ago, it was hard to find a barber shop that I could consistently rely on to deliver a great cut, but my search certainly ended when I went to the studio and then the barber shop when it opened up. Shayna's really a very talented barber, and one of the first things that stands out is her attention to detail and how she truly listens to her clients. She's very personable, and I was blown away by how much she remembered from our first conversation--it had been a while between my first and second cut. After looking through all the reviews, I figured I should try out Deep Blue Barbershop. I made an appointment online which was super easy and I was greeted with Shayna when I came in. She was very nice and started my appointment on time. There is a reason why everyone gave this place 5 stars. It's because Shayna actually listens to what you want. Even though the description I gave her for the haircut I wanted was confusing, Shayna figured out what I wanted and gave me the perfect cut. She took her time and paid attention to the closest details, while still having a conversation with me. To put the icing on the cake, she gives you a razor shave on the back of the neck and styles your hair at the end. I will definitely come back to Deep Blue Barbershop for another haircut. read more

I've gotten haircuts, bald fades and shaves from both Shayna and Paul for over two years and they are both highly skilled and very friendly. I make sure to come to them every time I'm in Boston even though I have now moved across the country. Shayna never disappoints with fades and Paul is a master with the shaves. There is parking in the back if your drive but they are also near public transportation. The shop is very clean and tidy and I do recommend the shop for anyone as they are very welcoming, and have the skills for the cut you want. Great barber shop located near the Brookline Public Library. I've been going here for the past 6 months and it's by far the best haircut I've gotten in the area. Deep Blue values traditional barber techniques, something that is lacking in the Brookline Village area. I'm so happy I found this place - the online scheduling is super convenient and Shayna is awesome. I've never been great at describing what kind of haircut I want, but I just gave some generalities the first time I went and Shayna came up with exactly the kind of cut that fit me. I had been going to other more 'old-school' type barber shops in the area, and was never too happy with the results (would constantly have to wait a week or so for it to start growing back in before I was comfortable with my hair...) But every time I've gone to Shayna so far I've been immediately pleased with how it looked. I HIGHLY recommend this place and Shayna in particular (I'm sure Paul is great too, just haven't gone with him yet!) She's also really comfortable and easy to be around- chatting/conversation is always one of those weird things when it comes to getting your hair cut, but it's never awkward or uncomfortable with her. They take credit cards for payment, but you can only tip in cash, so keep that in mind- always tip your barber!
