My wife and I were in Escalon today and looking for someplace for lunch. I spotted this restaurant on Yelp. What a find. The outside is beautiful, it was after the normal lunch hour's. When we walked in it was a wonderful dining room bustling with people, many of them speaking Portuguese. This was a good sign. We were seated by a very nice gentleman named Paul and our server was extremely nice and very well versed on the menu. I will not try to spell the Portuguese. Ames for our dishes. My wife had a special of marinaded ribs and Portuguese beans and I had marinated thin sliced pork with egg on top and rice and potatoes. Both came with Portuguese corn bread. Another fantastic meal. Reservations for 6 at the last minute? Yes! Had Portuguese Vinho Verde wine. A cold efervescent wine done similar to a top not sauvignon blanc. Friends invited us to lunch at Debby's Cuisine in Escalon. We've driven by many times but this was our first time trying it out. I'm a little familiar with Portuguese food but mostly just Portagee beans and linguiça. I had the pork tenderloin (can't remember the Portuguese name for it) with rice and fries. The pork was tender and tasty, fries were crispy, and the rice was moist and flavorful. Outstanding rice. So good. Wifey had the chicken masala with a side of veggies which she really enjoyed. The food was great and the service was outstanding. The menu is pretty eclectic. Several Portuguese dishes along with some Italian and American staples like a variety of burgers. Oh! We shared a piece of chocolate mousse cake that was decadently delicious. Didn't realize it but we were for almost three hours eating l, drinking, and visiting with our friends. We ordered the fresh cheese and bread for the app, the Polvo which is an octopus stew and the NY strip. The cheese was very mild and bread was fresh and delicious. I wish they served their dinner rolls with it and those are the best. The octopus was tender and stew reminded me of a mild tomato stew. Different but tasty. They know how to flavor a steak. Probably my absolute favorite. Wish they rendered it trim the fat a little more but it was still very juicy cooked medium rare and full of flavor! Our friends ordered their cod dish and Portuguese steak dish. The cod dish was definitely different. Almost a cod potato casserole. They were satisfied. The servers were very friendly and owner hands on with passion. Love to see an owner making sure customers are happy. He also explained some of the dishes and made recommendations. Had specialty hamburgers with fries for lunch - the fries, especially were incredible. Dinner was even better - starting with fresh Portuguese sweetbread and a super soft French loaf. Hubby had a ribeye steak, medium rare, that was thick, tender, and cooked perfectly. His sides were those great fries, and Debby's specialty Mac-n-cheese, opting for their crunchy garlic sauce that is clearly the best we've ever had - that garlic sauce put it over the edge! This is truly an old school approach to eating out The plates come FULL of food, the flavor of the food is unbelievable, the vibe is casual/ relaxed, the waitress they have is friendly, the restaurant itself is spotless and the pricing makes this place a great value. I'm not sure where the chef learned to cook but the food is unbelievably good and her talent in the kitchen is obvious. To top it off, the chef really knows how to make good, authentic, traditional Portuguese food. We have eaten at Debby's four times since they opened. We drove over an hour to experience this restaurant for lunch. I am half Azorian Portuguese (my grandparents met in a dairy in the 1920's within 30 miles of this restaurant where they both worked). I really appreciate the very small handful of restaurants that honor and educate others about the cuisine and heritage of the Azorian islands which I was lucky to visit many years ago. I ordered the Bacalau (salt cod). I appreciate that they let me know upon my ordering that it would take 25 min and suggested that we order an appetizer to hold us over. My husband ordered the thin pork chops. We ordered a simple fresh cheese appetizer which includes both slices of their corn meal and dinner rolls. We both prefer the corn meal bread as it is light and fluffy. The bacalau came out super hot and had a slight piri piri spicy bite. All good. I just wish they would have used a little less olive oil which overpowered the dish. The oil was way too heavy and buried the flavor. Hubby's pork chop with egg was good. He said it was a little dry but when we switched dishes, I thought it was fine and reminded me of my Ava's (Portuguese in grandma) pork dish. read more

Prices were higherthe spectacular specials ($63 for 1/2 pound lobster with 12 oz Prime beef steak), but very much in line with the quality of the offering and the very large portions.
