Knuckle Sandwich - lobster and king crab
    Chip P.

This place has always been fabulous as a seafood market. But I love that they're foraying into the takeout field, and their renovation has the market looking really sharp. I got the Knuckle sandwich - "Lobster, Alaskan king crab knuckle meat, shallots, tarragon, lightly dressed & brushed w/ hot butter on a toasted New England style brioche." On paper it sounds amazing, and it certainly was tasty. But at the price point, you're typically getting a double roll quantity of lobster meat at their competitors. In order for this sandwich to hold up to them, they need more meat on it. Nevertheless, they are doing great things down at Dean's. If you're a local who frequents the market or never has, try them out for some takeout. I think you'll be pleased.

I'm no longer viewing the flashing box for almost two decades because the Shamwaa Super Sqiuggie pitchman got me crazy, so he took a fall with the power cord flailing behind like a tail. I mention the tale because it's rock n roll to me but also because I recall so few shows that I enjoyed. And Andrew Zimmerman is my kinda guy not just for the kookie slimy foods he'd consume with a smile, but the markets he tropsed around within. Hong Kong, Japan, Greece -- lots of forklifts carrying big blue heads on ice -- with eyes that seem to still be watching the surroundings. Arriving at Dean's ten minutes prior to opening time, Dean himself let me in with a flip of the lock and a twist of the wrist that held the OPEN sign. "Let's get the clams and mussels outta the way first - remember, double bags and extra ice -- Check" And I hauled away about four dozen of each - which, in fishing currency or Jackie Gleason terms "it cost me a mere bag o shells" Crab cakes have always been a lifelong -- not just favorite, but a seasonal favorite item - and always a buyer on Independence Day. (I was in Maryland on July 4th many moons ago and it just kinda stuck. I love that moment just before opening the crab legs freezer, dontcha just wish a mass of frostbitten claws just popped out at you -- what a fun fright that would be. But they didn't so instead I carefully took a bag out and rested it in my arms as if it was a baby cub I was nurturing. Threw down a five spot for the gang behind the scenes and ouches and shoved and grunted and groaned trying to get all crustrations into the Kiddie (aka Personal Beer Cooler) when I have three 45 liter coolers at home doing nothing in the garage.

Haven't been to Deans in a while but was in the area and dropped in today to pick up a few shrimp and scallops. WOW everything looked so fresh and inviting ! The store was clean and brightly lit! The prices are quite reasonable and are comparable to other fish markets in my area and the service was great too ! The shrimp were excellent, fresh and sweet . I sautéed them in garlic and olive oil over linguine! Came out great! Dipped and breaded-fried the scallops with old bay seasoning and lemon wedges .... So succulent and tender!!! They also have a wonderful selection of prepared items !I plan to try their crab cakes next time , they looked phenomenal , large patties packed with chunks of crab meat !

I love this place too. Fish is always fresh. I have gotten their Shrimp cocktail platter for Christmas eve and it's well worth the price.

I ordered online, they have a really convenient online ordering system which gave me no issue. I got their order of fried clam strips and a small platter of fried flounder, fried shrimp, and white rice. The clam strips were tasty but I have to knock them for not prepping them fresh as a fish market. I quite literally saw the box they were delivered in sitting in the counter. They weren't bad but definitely not great. The fried shrimps were just okay. The breading and meat were a bit chewy and firm, not very crisp. For the rice I was partially expecting a spanish type of white rice but it was plain steamed rice. This did work well though because my other items were a bit salty anyway. The real star of the show was the fish. This was definitely prepped in house and it was so good. A crisp, generously seasoned outer crust with the flaky meat intact and moist. I found their cayenne pepper sauce perfect for the fried seafood, very thin and vinegar forward to cut through the grease a bit. Their tartar was okay, it was one of the sweeter types which I'm not a fan of. I would try it again and get their fried fish . Everything else I'd mix up though.

The restaurant…read moreusually has some great specials and an impressive, rotating selection of east and west coast oysters. The servers are all well versed in the menu items, including the oyster selection, which is always a plus for me. Each time I've visited I ordered a few different oysters and have never been disappointed. You really cannot go wrong with what you order. The fritto misto appetizer is outstanding, perfect for 2-4 people. Also had to try the oysters Rockefeller which are always delicious. My first visit (NYE '26) they had octopus on their specials menu. I PRAY they bring it back because it was memorable, even 6 months later. My first visit I tried the barramundi which, at the time was a special menu item. It seems they added it to the Mains but with a different preparation. This time I tried the salmon which was excellent. If seafood's not your jam, they have plenty of menu items to choose from. In addition to the food, they also have great cocktails and a stellar looking happy hour menu I can't wait to try. I recommend making reservations, especially if you're visiting on a Friday or Saturday night. Both times I went here the restaurant was packed, particularly the bar area. My only real critique is that the restaurant gets a bit loud, making it a tad difficult to hear but it's also a sign that the place is doing consistently well.

However, the seating in my opinion is on a tight spaced sidewalk where people and cars pass you by. It was crowded and our waiter was fine. The food took way too long to come out. It was like they forgot our order. It was happy hour for clams so that could have played a part. However, others had received their food before us. When the food finally came, the oysters were sad. Such small oysters for a place that's on the coast and bases it menu off the ocean. Our tuna tartar tacos were great. Best I've ever had. The flavor is towards the bottom of the taco so take a big bite to get all that flavor. IMO this is a nice place. I would not make it a go to spot for their oysters. But I would return.
