Deacon Blues is a neighborhood bar and restaurant. Although the bar area was crowded, we were able to walk back to the dining room, had a short wait for a table. We dined on salad and pizza. The tossed salad was a good size, fresh ingredients and the salad dressing tasted homemade. Their pizza is absolutely delicious: tasty sauce, toppings and cheese! I work in Watervliet, I have since like 2015, so when I saw this place recommended, in Watervliet, and I had never even heard of it? I had to go. This is a dive, for sure, but don't be afraid of dives, embrace them. From the outside you would for sure just drive past, I know, I have driven down this street 100 times and never noticed. But when you walk inside it feels like home. It's bright and welcoming and it was absolutely spotless (the bathroom too!) It's very old inside, all wooden, but reading all the etchings in the wood from the last 4+ decades was pretty awesome. I almost forgot to add, I had the best service here that I had in a long time. It made the meal. Our waitress was so nice and welcoming. We ordered beers, the choices are slim and very domestic, but they did have a bottle of flower power, which only set me back $3.75. We had the fried vegetable platter to start (my friend is vegetarian) and they were pretty good! I saw the wings go by and I wanted to try them. I ordered them hot, and I really enjoyed the spice level, pretty mild for a hot wing. They were meaty. If you love meaty wings, you should come here. They were huge I could only eat a few. The sauce was good. Like a franks sauce but they made it their own. Overall, they were good wings, could have been crispier, but call me picky. My friend absolutely loved her eggplant parm torpedo. The red sauce looked really great so I think if I come back I'll do a parm dish. She said the eggplant was still crispy in the roll, and she loved the fries so much. With two beers each and enough food for take out containers, our bill was less than $50. It's a deal. It's a little hometown spot. We would come back. I ordered a Reuben, which normally I get and it's absolutely perfect. tonight my Reuben was cold in the middle and the bread was not grilled properly so I asked the waitress to take it back. I told her I didn't want another one she had the kitchen remake my sandwich anyway and the french fries that went with it even though I'd already eaten the fries. She brought it out to me and said I'm taking it off your bill so you're not being charged for it but I wanted you to have a replacement. You can take it home and eat it tomorrow. The food is always top-notch at this establishment. The service is always above and beyond. The waitresses that work There are some of the best servers I've ever come across and I used to work in the restaurant industry for 30 years. I went there for the first time, with no expectations, good or bad, but was very happy when I left. The waitresses were fantastic, both older, and knew what to do regarding when to come, when not to come, were very informative regarding menu. Tried a personal sized pizza which came highly recommended. Crust wasn't the soft crusty dough I've come to love from other pizza shops. It may also have been better as a regular pizza with regular non-seafood toppings. Have tried their hot turkey sandwiches and think this is more their style. I'm a fan of the Capital Region's taverns in general. Sure, there are some newer entrants into the category. However, my favorite places are the ones that feel like they've been part of the fabric of time forever. Deacon Blues is one of these places. The woman's entrance isn't signed, but it's in the back, far away from the boisterous bar. These days, of course, anyone enters through the front door which opens into the bar. And there's nothing fancy about it. On tap, the import selection is from Canada, and the high end pour is Blue Moon. This is not a place for beer snobs. So with pitchers of Genny we washed down pretty decent wings. The medium ones had better flavor than the hot. We ordered them crispy, and some of them arrived that way. In the future, I'd make sure to ask for them "extra crispy." Admittedly, I was a bit nervous when the mozzarella sticks didn't have melba sauce listed alongside them on the menu. But of course, raspberry sauce is available. Deacon Blues' version of this is oddly thick, but flavorwise is a solid match for the well seasoned fried cheese. More importantly, when thinking of the other taverns in Watervliet, I'm a bigger fan of this rectangular pie with its crisp corner edge crusts than I am of the rounder one at the more famous tavern down the road. Is this worth a drive for pizza, wings, and beer? Maybe not. But for anyone who is curious to explore the culinary culture of the Capital Region, I'd say that this is a can't miss spot. So if your grandma wanted to combine her love for cooking, seasonal decor, and playing the lottery this is the restaurant she would open up. Nestled into one of the side streets in a residential area of Watervliet is Deacon Blues. Service was sharp, and the atmosphere felt warm like your grandma's kitchen. It attracted patrons who were young and old. The wings were ok, but we're not up to par for me. I was more enamored by the crisp, hot, fried cauliflower. At least they found a way for me to eat cauliflower. The pizzas are rectangle style with a medium thickness crust. The chicken pesto was very subtle, perhaps too subtle? A little more salt, garlic, or pesto perhaps. The sausage pizza was good but needed an accompanying vegetable to balance the food groups. Try it for yourself if you want to take a step back in time. May not be for the up and coming millennial but will cater to those looking to go retro! read more

What can I say, if your over 70 this is the place to be. I had the basic hot turkey with gravy and fries. I was just your local neighborhood bar staple, salty , greasy and very filling and comforting. But that's it. If you want the feel of the feel of the Southend tavern, notty pine, etc then this is the bar to be. read more

Deacon Blues makes quality pizza, sandwiches and steaks, and the beer is cheap. It is an authentic neighborhood bar in Watervliet. It is worth a visit if you are in the Watervliet area. The sandwiches are big. The steaks are cooked perfectly and they have fresh mushrooms or other toppings. The pizza is very good, and the do not skimp on toppings. They proudly serve Genesee Beer! I found the service to be quick, the food was hot and the beer was cold. The bartender was always attentive to when we were about to need fresh drinks. Its main problem is that the Purple Pub is right down the road, and it is impossible to compete against their pizza, wings and sandwiches. But Deacon Blues gives Watervliet two excellent options for authentic, old-fashioned (in a good way) neighborhood pubs. I always prefer non-chain bars and restaurants. My husband and I stopped in after our date as we didn't want the night to end and we only live a few houses down from this bar. We were happy to have found such a place so close to conclude our evening with a night cap. We walked in and everything pretty much stopped while a room of about 7 people stopped and stared at us, including the bar tender. As he continues his conversation with someone else at the bar, he decided to walk over to us after about 10 minutes. He just stood there and looked at us. Since he wasn't going to say anything we took the initiative. After we ordered our drinks, he made sure to let us know when they close. Which was in 45 min. Then a cook looking kind of man came out covered in grease and food tells me "kitchen is closed" then walked away. They didn't smile, didn't say hello, didn't welcome us. Just went back to the regulars he was talking to and smiling and laughing and having a gay ole time. We didn't feel welcomed at all. Disgusting customer service. Not to mention the bar smells like an old folks home and grease and cigarettes. If that old man behind the bar was an owner, it's a pretty sad situation. Won't be going back. We'd rather deal with the morons at Black Bear then snotty local owners that think they are better. read more

Another first review for another childhood restaurant! Hooray! Deacon Blues is another fine Watervliet establishment. Although not as good as the Purple Pub. Deacon Blues is like the Mets to the Purple Pub's Yankees. Sorry Mets fans. The food is still pretty decent, although I think I'm burned out on the place. This was another 'go here once a week' restaurant for my family and I'm pretty sure I've had everything on the menu at least ten times. But the waitresses and bartenders are all super-friendly and they have great dinner salads. I recommend going for the stuffed scrod or the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and broccoli. The worst meal and experience we have ever had ! Two dinners were severed cold ( prime rib special ) and one diner was overlooked when orders were placed. It took one hour and forty minutes to get cold food. Two servers were on duty and one person who did nothing but watch the room from behind a counter. They have the best thin crust pizza I have ever had in my life. Their homemade sauce is awesome. I have eaten there on and off for 30 years and they have basically ruined pizza for me anywhere else. I get a large peporoni pizza every time and kill it in about 10 minutes flat. read more
