we went today for lunch while visiting and while the service was good and the food was not good, Wife had a chicken strawberry salad and I had the special ribeye steak and both were okay. They salad had on some mystery meat that they said was chicken and the steak I had was a butcher cut that was tough fatty and chewy. For $17.00 it should have been a lot better. So disappointing. The quality of the restaurant has gone down very quickly in recent months. They could not seem to answer the phone when attempting to place an order. Eventually answered and I sat on hold for 7 minutes, only to be hung up on. I should have abandoned my efforts then. Called back and finally was able to place an order. Went inside to get my take out order, as no one would come to the pickup window. Was promptly greeted with employee's or owner's young children rolling around on the floors and running around unattended. Employees were scrolling on their phones, refusing to help anyone. One was apparently visiting with a friend, rather than serving customers. There was one female employee who appeared to be scrambling to handle everything at once, as no other workers were interested in helping her. I felt terrible for her, as it seems she was doing her best, but couldn't do everything alone. The folks in the kitchen were struggling to keep up, and the food was good, but the disrespect for customers and for the one working employee was doing her best. Came here for breakfast Friday and Saturday morning. Friday with a group of 5 other people. Friday it took a long time for the food to arrive after order when inquired about the length delay, was told it was due to the large order. The steak and cheese omelette was okay at best, the pancake was tough on the outside. Men's bathroom was Disgusting. The females in our group stated the their bathroom was Disgusting as well. Saturday we came here with a group of 4, service was better and wait time for food was better than Friday. Breakfast food was okay at best. I hadn't been here in quite a while. This is a nice little place where you can get breakfast lunch or dinner. They have a really solid breakfast menu and a good lunch and dinner menu that consist mainly of sandwiches plus items such as meatloaf spaghetti and hamburgers. Everything I've had on the menu is very good. I noticed this time they also have a TV on the wall that provides local advertising and the occasional really inspiring quote. Ordered breakfast to-go this morning, but was extremely disappointed with my experience. Ordered same thing I always do, scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast. Was told it would be ready in 10 minutes, got there in 10 minutes but had to wait another 20 minutes while it sat there getting cold. Finally asked the waitress if my order was ready, and she said yes that it just came out, which was a lie. Got out to my car and looked, and it was scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, and American fries. Brought it back in and told the waitress but she just sighed and acted bothered by it. She brought it back out to me a minute later with bacon, but it was still American fries instead of hashbrowns. Brought it back out a third time and said they remade everything fresh so it was hot and ready to go. Got out to my car and not only were the eggs overdone, but they were cold. I also found out that they overcharged me. I also heard the waitress tell another waitress that the phone's been ringing, but she's been ignoring it because she doesn't feel like dealing with it. So if you ever call to make a to-go order and they don't answer, you just might have her to thank. I don't get why they seem to have such a hard time with to-go orders, it's not like you're paying less. I will never do another to-go order here again as it always seems to be something. read more

Our first trip here - July 2021. This place is very clean. Seating is not "social distanced", but you're not on top of each other. No masks worn by staff or other customers - we aren't wearing a mask (we are vacinnated). It's very hot today, and the temp inside is perfect Staff is very friendly. Looking around, good looks good. Ketchup, salt & pepper, jellies and honey, coffee creamer (various flavors), and sugar and substitutes - all on the table, full, and clean. Starter salad is fresh - onions, tomatoes, croutons, lettuce. I got an omelette with buttermilk pancakes and toast. Everything was good, but typical of breakfast. My husband got meatloaf and mashed potatoes, broccoli, and garlic bread. I guess it was good since his plate is clean! He mentioned that the potatoes were real, good amount of gravy, and the right saltiness. We will definitely stop here again when in town. read more

I wanted to share what happened on 2 separate occasions at Day Break Cafe. It has me concerned how the owner is treating the waitresses with all of the "rules" there. This morning I was delivering a door dash order. The customer messaged me and asked if I could add some ketchup. The staff refused to give ketchup and said the customer has to pay for that. Pay for ketchup with a carry out order? On Veteran's day I had a bad experience as well. It was a Friday night a hour before close, hardly any customers. I took my grandpa with mobility issues to celebrate Veteran's day and was told we weren't allowed to sit down until the whole party arrived. The waitress was right there when I called my mom to verify she was in the parking lot. Yes, there are seats at the hostess stand but when you have mobility issues its hard to keep getting up and down. Again, was told those are the "rules." I have never been treated like it's boot camp at a restaurant before. I've also waitressed for years and am shocked from both of those situations. read more

Ordered take out from this restaurant and was not asked if I wanted syrup for my French toast, jelly for toast, salt, pepper or ketchup. Things that always come with an order. All because I didn't tip the lady. I don't tip the workers at the drive-through in any of the restaurants so why do they think there any better the tip is optional so I don't believe that the service should reflect the fact that I did not tip. It's been awhile since I have been in but I wanted to share my last positive experiences with this restaurant. They have very good breakfasts be it omelettes, waffles or pancakes. They get the egg cooks down. I have also been here for lunch and enjoy their burgers and sandwiches. In general, the staff seem nice. When I ask the family where they want to go to eat, consistently this is at the top for requests from my youngest daughter who loves their food. And now that we live closer to the place, it will be more often a place we go. Wait times due to governor restrictions made it tough lately but I don't see that being a problem in the king run and it's not like they can help it as if they could, they would host more folks. In an area with plenty of popular choices, this place is always a solid choice, especially for breakfast and lunch. read more

I am a big fan of breakfast. I make time for it every morning. Sometimes I am feeling lazy on the weekends and prefer not to bust out the griddle and pancake mix. Also, this was my first visit to Port Huron, so I love to try the restaurants there. (Not that Port Huron is a culinary mecca, but I love the small town feel of these establishments.) It was Saturday morning and I was starving. Me: Can we get breakfast? Boyfriend: I'm not hungry, and we have bananas and orange juice here. Me: Those are snacks. I want REAL breakfast. You know, that's served hot? PLEASE. Boyfriend: *Sigh* Alright, alright. Daybreak Cafe is one of the few restaurants in the area that has a menu online. Their prices are more than reasonable, with a majority of items being under $7. Terrific! My "not hungry" boyfriend and I both had the Eggs Benedict (I requested no bacon on mine), one of their specials. Two plates along with a cup of unlimited coffee came to under $15. That's super cheap. I'd be damned to find ONE Eggs Benedict in Chicago for less than $12. Plus, our food was good. The people there were friendly, of course. I am in love. (With both the boyfriend and Daybreak Cafe - hah.) I want to return the next time I'm in town. If you are looking for cheap, no frills breakfast in a friendly atmosphere and that's a step above your average greasy spoon diner, I would go no further than Daybreak Cafe. Went here for lunch on 5/6/13 with a friend. First bummer is that they no longer accept c.c or debit cards for orders less than $10, 2nd bummer- stood at the door for several minutes while every employee walked by w/ not even a 'hello/we'll be right w/ you' AND they weren't busy! The poor customer service started there and just continued to trickle downhill. Our server didn't greet us w/ a smile or even a 'Hi, my name is...', nothing- she was horrible- didn't deserve the tip my friend gave her! And I don't care if she was having a bad day- I work in customer service and it doesn't matter- you put a smile on your face and get over whatever is up your rear and do your job!!! There are a ton of people who would gladly take your place in this craptastic job market!! Now, the only saving grace is their Santa Fe Chicken Salad, pita bread, and ranch dressing. I will also add, there was a guy- who I hope received a portion of the tip (he deserved the whole thing) who cleared the table and asked us if we wanted more water or to take our left overs b/c our server was M.I.A Get it together Daybreak Cafe- you're not the only place in town! Management needs to get out to the tables and ask the customers about their experience. I was skeptical of Daybreak. Generally when you see a place like this you figure its just a standard diner. You're not going to be wowed by anything but you'll feel adequately served. The Daybreak Cafe is different. I lived in the Port Huron area for about 10 years or so and saw a half dozen restaurants come through this location in that time span. Daybreak is the only one that has stuck around for more than a year. I ordered the patty melt and good god was it delicious. Grilled rye, sauteed onions, a 1/2 lb patty, and swiss and american cheeses. Let me tell you something about Daybreak's cooking staff, they can saute the F-word out of some onions. That sandwich was make exemplary because of the perfectly cooked onions. I'd wager to say that this was the best patty melt I've ever had, and I've had a lot of patty melts. The flavor mix was excellent; nothing overpowered anything else. The only suggestion I have is maybe get some marble rye and try that out, but it's a personal quibble because I like swirly breads. Port Huron, especially on the north end, doesn't have a lot of dining options if you're going non-chain. This place is a beacon of hope and culinary excellence in that town. They don't try to go crazy and add wacky shit just for the sake of adding it. They know what they do and they do it well. read more
