Okay, the "MAIN" thing to keep in mind here is that this is a "teaching" restaurant for the students attending Baker College's Culinary School. (And remember that they have JUST opened and are in that adjustment period as well) Having said that, this place is probably the finest dining (in terms of the food) that you're going to find in Port Huron, period! Now, the restaurant itself isn't much more than a room located inside of the Culinary Institute (which is right next door to the ol' Edison Inn). The place offers nice views of the river. It's quaint, but not much in terms of decor. I was hoping to see an "open-kitchen" concept where we could actually see and hear everything that the chefs were doing. Instead, you get to look at a tv monitor that shows various locations of the kitchen (which are behind closed doors). The room does have a bar area (which is stocked with various drinks if you so please). I won't go into the various food choices that I ate, but everything I had was simply fantastic (with, perhaps the exception of the dessert). The menu is quite limited, but everything is moderately priced (apps from 3 to 5 dollars, salads from 3 to 4 dollars, and entrees from 7 to 12 dollars). Plus, they offer a 3-course Prix Fixe Menu for 15 dollars. Now, about the desserts... they were good, but seemed like they had perhaps been made up ahead of time and taken out of the fridge (or freezer) when ordered. The students are not only doing all of your cooking, they have students as the wait staff as well. Just keep that in mind, OKAY??? Reservations only... but if you live in the area and love great food, I see this as a MUST TRY for Port Huron!! They are only open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. To make a reservation, please call 810-357-0875

A Hidden Gem in Port Huron Michigan My wife I and a neighbor had the pleasure of dining for lunch at Courses today. Excellent menu, excellent service, excellent meal and fantastic view of the Blue Water bridge between Canada and the USA. Courses is operated by the Culinary institute of Michigan. It is currently only open 11:30AM to 2PM Wednesday thru Friday. I had the Black Bean Soup, Roasted Game Hen and home made assorted breads along with fresh table side guacamole with home made flavorful chips. The ladies tried the 5oz filet medium rare with augratin potatoes. The filet melted in their mouths. All meals were excellent. This is a definite go to venue when in the Port Huron area. The highlight was when my neighbor a senior citizen was asked for ID when she ordered a glass of wine. Apparently the students are trained to ask for ID as a matter of habit as part of their training.

The salmon is as beautiful as it is delicious.

Ambiance: The inside has black, white and red checkered floors, red tile walls, round red (with shiny flakes) counter stools and a vintage neon-ish clock. Service: the building is small, and the food is cooked in front of you. As soon as I walked in, the cook - David - cheerfully greeted me. Definitely a friendly, high energy guy, enthusiastically representing Detroit! Food: I ordered the striped catfish dinner with fries and coleslaw. The slaw was house-made with purple cabbage. I would have preferred the strips cut into smaller pieces. I could not identify the seasoning, it was ok. Maybe an acquired taste. The crinkle cut fries were also ok, I would have preferred seasoned though - probably frozen? The catfish, was taken out of refrigerator, battered and cooked in front of me. It was delicious! Gold corn meal, seasoning salt, pepper and maybe paprika? The way my late father used to do it! The 2 fillets were a generous size : 8 or so inches. I will definitely be back to try other items on the menu!

The hostess was rude, and when we were seated, there were straws, wrappers, and spilled liquid underneath our table. No one offered to clean it, and after being sat, no one came to our table for over 20 minutes. When our waiter finally arrived- without greeting or introducing himself he just asked "has anyone been with you yet?" *mind you he had been in the section tending to TWO other tables the whole time we were there*. We ordered drinks (an old fashioned and a mocktail), along with cheese curds for an appetizer and a steak and burger for dinner. Our drinks didn't come out for another 15 minutes. When the waiter brought them, I asked if he could put all of our food in at once if he didn't already. He stated he already had because the kitchen was backed up. After that, we never saw him again. Meanwhile, the couple seated right before us received their drinks, meals, and even dessert. Another table was served three appetizers during the time we sat there waiting. Our table was available after being on a waitlist of 35 minutes at 7:11pm and by 8:30pm we still had not received ANY of our food or seen our waiter again. We left money on the table to cover our drinks and left. To make matters worse, the table next to us remained dirty the entire time we were there, and an 8-top nearby sat covered in dishes the whole evening. Where was the manager? The owner? There was no one walking around apologizing for long wait times, no communication, and absolutely no effort to offer compensation or make things right. I have worked in hospitality in years and the way this night was handled was absolutely careless. I have given this establishment MANY changes, and this was the last straw. An absolute 0/10 experience. This was supposed to be a special Valentine's night out for us, and instead it was frustrating and disappointing. I will not be returning to Freighters, and I will be sharing this experience with others so they don't waste their special occasions the way we did.
