Found this restaurant on our drive back through Canada to our home in Port Austin. Courses is a great restaurant inside the Culinary Arts Building in Port Huron. We had a wonderful lunch prepared,, ordered and served by students. James was our waiter and he described our experience there very thoroughly. He insisted we take home our bread bowl with a variety of breads all prepared that day by the students. We had delicious Rueben sandwiches ( turkey & corned beef). Lots of food, reasonable prices, and super friendly service. The desserts looked tasty but we were full from our meal. Didn't make it past the dessert case outside of the restaurant. Took home a slice of homemade "bumpy" cake for our daughter. Limited hours & days since it is a school. Changing menus throughout the school year. A really nice gem that nobody knows about. First of it is a school first, so the students are doing everything from cooking to bartending to waiting tables. I think it makes for a pretty cool experience. The food is all small plate so don't order anything planning on sharing. Reservations are a little weird, you call and leave a voicemail and they will call you back. I think it's a neat concept. As for the food. Everything is delicious, and the variety will make it so you can get the pickiest eaters to enjoy their meals. (I'm talking to all the people in port Huron who's diets consist of steak and potatoes and don't you dare put veggies on the plate.) There are also some really cool dishes for those out there that want to try something outside there normal range. The food feels like more upscale food, but the prices definitely don't break the bank. Even with the appetizers being single person they are only $3, and I don't know many places you are getting a filet mignon for $14. If you haven't tried this place you are missing out. read more

These students are being taught well. Everything from food , to service, to atmosphere, was perfect.

Okay, the "MAIN" thing to keep in mind here is that this is a "teaching" restaurant for the students attending Baker College's Culinary School. (And remember that they have JUST opened and are in that adjustment period as well) Having said that, this place is probably the finest dining (in terms of the food) that you're going to find in Port Huron, period! Now, the restaurant itself isn't much more than a room located inside of the Culinary Institute (which is right next door to the ol' Edison Inn). The place offers nice views of the river. It's quaint, but not much in terms of decor. I was hoping to see an "open-kitchen" concept where we could actually see and hear everything that the chefs were doing. Instead, you get to look at a tv monitor that shows various locations of the kitchen (which are behind closed doors). The room does have a bar area (which is stocked with various drinks if you so please). I won't go into the various food choices that I ate, but everything I had was simply fantastic (with, perhaps the exception of the dessert). The menu is quite limited, but everything is moderately priced (apps from 3 to 5 dollars, salads from 3 to 4 dollars, and entrees from 7 to 12 dollars). Plus, they offer a 3-course Prix Fixe Menu for 15 dollars. Now, about the desserts... they were good, but seemed like they had perhaps been made up ahead of time and taken out of the fridge (or freezer) when ordered. The students are not only doing all of your cooking, they have students as the wait staff as well. Just keep that in mind, OKAY??? Reservations only... but if you live in the area and love great food, I see this as a MUST TRY for Port Huron!! A Hidden Gem in Port Huron Michigan My wife I and a neighbor had the pleasure of dining for lunch at Courses today. Excellent menu, excellent service, excellent meal and fantastic view of the Blue Water bridge between Canada and the USA. Courses is operated by the Culinary institute of Michigan. It is currently only open 11:30AM to 2PM Wednesday thru Friday. I had the Black Bean Soup, Roasted Game Hen and home made assorted breads along with fresh table side guacamole with home made flavorful chips. The ladies tried the 5oz filet medium rare with augratin potatoes. The filet melted in their mouths. All meals were excellent. This is a definite go to venue when in the Port Huron area. The highlight was when my neighbor a senior citizen was asked for ID when she ordered a glass of wine. Apparently the students are trained to ask for ID as a matter of habit as part of their training. read more

We joined our friends at the Culinary Institute of Michigan for lunch today. Their son is a chef and instructor at this unexpected gem in the shadow of the Bluewater Bridge. The view from the dining room is breathtaking but is easily exceeded by the creative cuisine. I'm not one to gush but this was a true gastronomic delight. The menu is limited because, after all, it is a school. However, this allows the staff and students to absolutely perfect the dishes they do offer. Please view pictures we've posted of just a few of the plates we so thoroughly enjoyed. Then consider arranging a visit during their, unfortunately, very limited hours. I recently went here with a group of friends. The setting was extremely unprofessional as the woman who looked to be in charge was screaming and laughing into the doors entering the kitchen. The entire restaurant could hear her. Secondly, there were 3 tables occupied at the peak of lunch time. They don't seem to be very popular. My food was just okay. The prices are good. Overall, I will not be returning. On the bright side, our waiter Mike was very charming and knowledgeable. read more
