When I bought my new home, I wanted to have the wood floors refinished throughout the house (sanded, stained a different color and varnished), to replace the carpet in one room with matching wood floors and to replace all the baseboards with new baseboards. Pros: (1) I got quotes from four contractors and David's Flooring had the lowest price. More importantly, any adjustment to the quoted price was due to modifications in the work plan and fully vetted with me ahead of time (and were immaterial). Unusual - once they start work and are "in" most contractors find ways to jack up the price since you are a captive audience at that point. (2) This is a Polish family's business and the owner's daughter handles all quotes and customer relations. Anneta is incredibly responsive, professional and accurate. She was very easy to communicate with for scheduling and any issues that arose. She visited the work site on multiple occasions to make sure everything was going well. (3) I took forever to pick a stain color -- literally 5 separate sessions of sample stains -- and they were totally patient in that process and would have done another 5 sessions if I would have needed it. They also provided alternative baseboards when I didn't like the original samples provided. Cons: (1) Some of their non-family workers (Rafael in particular) were rude and difficult to deal with. You could call Anneta who would immediately address any problem, but sometimes it was too late for a particular situation and she really couldn't fix the obnoxious attitudes. The family members who work in the business are terrific - it's just some of their workers who are difficult. (2) Generally, they did a nice job but they didn't put everything back where they found it (e.g., they removed but did not reinstall a pedastal sink, a number of closet doors, various shelving, etc.) Some of these items ended up being quite difficult to reinstall. (3) They didn't do a great job on the stairs -- those are supposed to be done by hand (on average, you pay $2-3 per square foot for refinishing floors, but $50 per stair) but they did the center with their sanding machine & weren't thorough in sanding down the sides and corners. Therefore the back corners of each stair slope up because they weren't sanded down as much as the rest of the stair. Looking back, I would probably have paid an additional $2,000 and gone with my next-highest quote from Medallion Construction since I think they would have done better work and been easier to work with (they did my aunt's house 3 years ago which still looks amazing, plus they are an American family-owned business so there is no language barrier). But my floors look pretty good and I saved some money going with David's Flooring, plus I like the color (which they were kind enough to patiently allow me two weeks to select) so no complaints! read more
