There used to be more reviews of this place. I know I posted a negative review of this hair salon on Yelp before. I got a horrible cut here. The person styling my hair did not listen to what I wanted at all. Not only did she cut my hair in a way that did not at all correspond to what I wanted, she styled it in a horrible manner. When she pulled out the round brush to style my short hair, I told her that I *never* like my hair styled with a round brush when it's short. I told her not to use it. She continued to not listen to what I wanted and proceeded to dry my hair with the brush, giving me a style more appropriate for a 60 year old than a 25 year old. They then continuously sent me text messages even after I asked them to stop. read more

Four years later and I still come here and only here - which for me is quite a coup since I was a commitment phobe when it came to salons. Daniel is still awesome and another great stylist there is Nicole, whom I'd recommend as well. She is stylish, chill and friendly and also does wonders with my baby-fine hurr. And really, as if there weren't enough good things to say about the place, you can now book your appointments online through a great system that allows you to check multiple stylists and multiple appt. times all at once. Melanie has been doing my hair and she's absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend her, she's great with blonde colors. She's very fun to talk to and knows her stuff. She's done great cuts, color, and blowouts on me every time I've come in. I'm a high-level blonde (very light blonde) and I get very nervous with people handling my color, but she does an excellent job. When I couldn't find the place due to bad gps directions, the receptionist directed me and stayed on the phone with me until I arrived. The makeup artist is fantastic. This salon is very upscale! It has a great attitude and drive for continued education and the stylists definitely know the latest styles; to top it off, it was extremely accommodating. I got a same day appointment (7:15) booked it around 4:30pm. Due to traffic and airport fuss etc., arrived at 7:30 but Gabriela was outstanding! Great Place! I've been a client of both Audi and Cynthia. Audi is an expert with bangs - it is surprisingly hard to find someone who knows how to cut a full bang without making them look uneven or square, she does a great job! I love this salon! If you need a sure thing this is the place to go. Several times I've come here needing corrective color (after a few unfortunate visits at other salons) and I always came out of David Michael completely satisfied. I have naturally blonde hair and I generally go platinum. My color type is extremely easy to mess up and I've never had any incident here. Lindsay is my go to stylist and she's the best. She always does a great job. Further she never pushes you to get services you don't need, something that other salons tend to do. If she recommends something I'm always confident that it's in my best interest and not a ploy to gain a commission. The location is easy to get to and there's plenty of parking. I always feel comfortable at the salon and everyone working caters to you. As far as the price goes you get what you pay for and then some. It's not the cheapest or most expensive place. There is only one word to describe my experience at this salon - INSANE. I have never experienced anything like this in my life. It was like being a part of a ghetto reality show. I left in a state of shock. Let me start from the beginning ... I recently started a job in the area and decided to look for a new salon to get my hair blown out, something I do every week. I called to make an appt and explained that I have long, thickish hair and was looking specifically for someone who is good at blowdrying. They suggested Johanny because of her availability and scheduled me. I arrived and was pleasantly greeted by a woman whom I later would learn is the manager as well as the shampoo girl whose name escapes me and Johanny. I received a nice shampoo and went to the chair to begin the blowdry. She asked me how I liked it and I told her I wanted it blown out with loose curls (not super straight) and volume. She agreed and got to work. She was having trouble making curls with the round brush, so I informed her that generally people use smaller round brushes instead of the extra-large ones because otherwise the curls don't hold. She cut me off mid-explanation and said "I cant do that. Not with your hair." She repeated "I can't.. No.. No" a few times. She said she would curl it with a curling iron after. I am not a huge fan of this because this method does not result in lasting curls, but since she wasn't willing to use smaller brushes and my hair was coming out stick straight, I agreed. She finished and my hair looked pretty mediocre, but in my mind I chalked it up to a failed experiment in finding a new salon and left to check-out. She was kind enough to offer names of other stylists at the salon who might be able to blowdry my hair more adeptly. I went to check out with the manager and she charged me a price nearly double of that on the website and which I had previously been quoted. "Really?" I asked? I told her that I get my hair blown out in the city every week at half the cost. She confirmed the price with Johanny and I paid. I politely requested that she touch my hair up to at least fix it so it looks a little more like what I had in mind. The manager went over to Johanny and that's when it all went downhill.. Johanny became belligerent and started yelling. She said "I really don't have time for this shit." She then marched over to me at the front at started attacking me, yelling and cursing. She said "You act like youre nice but you really aren't! You're disrespectful!" I'm sorry - but disrespectful?I politely asked her to do my hair the way I like it. Somehow I thought I was the customer, my mistake. She flew into a blind rage like nothing I have ever experienced. The manager tried to quiet her unsuccessfully. I looked at the manager in disbelief of what was happening. It was straight out of a trashy reality television show. I told her that I had never been treated like this by anyone, much less someone who was supposed to be providing a service to me for which I was paying. To the manager's credit, she was reasonable and apologized and refunded my appointment after I said I refused to pay to be treated like this. I left the salon in a state of shock and disbelief. If Johanny were my employee, I would have fired her on the spot. "Unprofessional" does not begin to describe it. I would think of going back to see one of the other stylists because the salon itself didn't seem bad, but I hate confrontation and Johanny seems like such a loose cannon that I wouldn't even want to run into her. read more

There's no doubt that all hair stylists here are very talented and nice people, but I cannot stand the "older" ladies at the front desk. On numerous occasions, I have been overcharged or promotions in their monthly newsletter were not upheld. Beware if you go in because of a promotion. They always find a way to tell you that what you received was actually more than the promotion and you now owe more! I cannot take it and will not return again. read more

I asked Lindsey for a 1 inch trim and LONG layers, telling her that when I've gotten short layers in the past, they made me look like a triangle head. I have hair that's very easy to manage and cut (straight, Indian hair) and did not think it would be a problem. Apparently, she was in a rush to get back to coloring one of her other clients and ended up washing, cutting and styling in 45 minutes, leaving me with SHORT layers. She cut my hair EXACTLY how I asked her not too. She did not even communicate with me throughout the cut, asking "Is this length good??" etc. Needless to say, I was greatly disappointed and will not be returning to the salon. read more

I read other reviews that are hidden on this place which I hadn't read before I went into this salon. Why are they hidden? Why do I have to look farther to find the what most people are saying about a company? I had one length hair to my shoulders with bangs. I said I wanted a trim straight across. When I left my hair was cut at an extreme angle sweeping forward on the bottom with another extreme angle heading up towards my bangs on the sides. The hair dresser hacked at it with thinning shears trying to layer it with the thinning shears because I didn't want layers but she felt I needed them. She cut the outer & upper layers of my hair so much with the thinning shears it looks almost layered with split end looking layers. When you hair is not layered it is not a good idea to attempt to layer the outer sections with thinning shears. That technique is for blending and softening existing layers. I'd be better off with a hair cut from Supercuts or any cheap chain then what I had when I left here. Its very simple to cut hair staight across and they missed the mark. The salon that repaired it said they should have never used the thinning shears on the outer upper visible sections of straight non layered hair and should have never held them at a 45 to 90 degree angle. They should have used it in the middle section under the top part of my hair in a more of a downward straight across angle so not to make it frizz upwards since my hair was not layered or better yet not use thinning shears at all. If you want to fight with the hairdresser, not get the cut you requested, and possibly go home and end up wearing a baseball caps or pony tail for weeks because your hair is definitely not how you want it then this place seems like a good place to go. Otherwise I'd suggest looking for a better salon that actually does what you request not listen to what you want they do their own thing anyways stating they are professionals and knows what is better for you. read more

5 star salon! I am extremely picky with whom I let cut my hair, takes me a long time to find a salon I like and to trust someone to cut my hair and color it. I am so picky that when I moved to MA I came back to the same NJ salon for years to get my haircut and pampered. I did the same thing when I moved to CA too. 12 years later I moved back to NJ and needed to find someone locally. Tried several other places recommended by friends and family and after 2 years and several disappointments I finally asked a friend from high school where she was going as her hair color and cuts always looked great. She recommended Lindsey and David Michael Salon to me. Well I was more than satisfied I was in heaven. I found my stylist and she's now stuck with me for the next decade or so! Place is clean, trendy and up to date on new products and fads. They have a great loyalty program too! Some treatments are pricey and done are much cheaper than I expected. read more

Went to have my hair done for a color, highlight and cut. My first appointment I told Lindsey Lombardo my hair stylist what I wanted. She pretty much told me that she didnt want to put in two tone highlights even though I said I wanted it. Then on top of it she went and put a base color that was too light. I told her after she dried my hair its too light. She didnt care and said that its fine. I said listen I will see how it looks in a few days. She didnt have time to cut my hair but made an appointment to come back in a few days. I came back and this time I had no babysitter and brought my son. Marisa Rodrigues the front desk girl said she cant watch him. Didn't want her to watch my son. My son wanted to walk around and apparently Lindsey and Marisa didn't like that. Marisa was extremely rude. At that point I said to Lindsey she darken my base color and just do layering for my hair. Layering my hair was a joke. She barely gave me a layered look but more so cut off a few inches. It was an awful experience and they are extremely rude. Its funny because I said I would have cancelled the appointment had I known this. I will never return. And a true rip off in every sense of the word. I paid almost $200 for something that should have cost close to $120. And I used a $10 off coupon for the haircut. read more

First time at this salon. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the receptionist who was very welcoming and friendly. Didn't have to wait long at all and my stylist Nicole called me for my appt. We discussed what style I had in mind and she offered great advice. My hair has been a mess after having my second child and she reassured me that what I was going through was normal. Through looking at the pics I brought and discussing why I wanted to cut my hair she gave me some great suggestions and products to help get things back on track. She was super nice and she gave me a great cut. I'm usually getting cuts at salons all around the area because I haven't found a person or place I was happy with but I was really content with my visit at this salon today and by the service Nicole gave me. Elva cut my hair after I showed her pictures and discussed how I needed height on top and wanted it cut shorter there. A snow storm was hitting the area during my cut and I usually can't tell if I like the cut for the first 2 days after. Unfortunately, I went on vacation for two weeks a couple of days after my cut. At this point, I realized that I did not like my cut at all and my hair was too long on top. My husband also did not like it. I contacted Elva when I got back but she works only the end of each week. She cut my hair correctly and quickly because I really did not need a cut if it had been down as I asked the first time. She only gave me a 20% discount and I was done in less than 40 minutes for a wash, cut and waiting for her as well! I could have spent less if I had gone into NYC and I would have saved precious time too!!! My review is beware! read more

I've been to David Michael twice before to have Nicole cut my hair. Both times she's did a good job so when I returned for the third time Nicole was not friendly and barely spoke a word to me. I don't know whether she was unhappy that I paid with a gift certificate my mother-in-law or something but she ruined my hair. I have short hair and the layering she did looked completely different from the left side of my hair to the right. She also cut some hairs at the top of my hair so short that they are sticking straight up. I told her I was not happy with the job she did and she replied with, "it's okay it will look different after you go home and style it your way". Why would I come to a salon for someone to tell me it'll look better when I fix it myself? I was so upset that I went home and my daughter seeing how upset I was and how terrible my hair looked drove me back to the salon. When I asked to speak to a manager the woman at the counter (Valerie) said she was one of the managers so we explained the whole situation. She did not apologize for the bad job Nicole did or the attitude she had and instead told us to wait for Nicole to come out and take a look at it. When we sat down with Nicole my daughter was saying what I didn't like about the hair cut and she made a hand gesture at her as if to calm down and told her to stop talking and listen so she could speak. I was shocked by how rude she was and she didn't offer any ways she could fix my hair, instead she kept justifying what she did as if I'm wrong for not liking the way she cut it. I definitely did not want her touching my hair again so we went back to Valerie to tell her about how rude Nicole was and Valerie had nothing to say. No I'm sorry that you're unhappy with your hair cut or I'm sorry for my employees rude and unprofessional behavior. Both my daughters had been here before to cut their hair as well, their first times here they did a good job but when they returned and had their hair done by the same two women (can't remember their names) they did a terrible job and they have not returned since. This place is inconsistent, unprofessional, and I definitely will not come back here and will be sure to tell my friends and family TO STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. read more

The place itself was great, very nice and clean, nice coffee machine and beverage selection. The staff was so so, it was a monday and quite dead. I saw Nicole who highlighted my hair well but gave me a hideous hair cut; nothing like what I asked for. She didn't talk the entire time, not that I'm a big talker but its nice to have some conversation with your hair stylist, develop a rapport and potentially come back again if all goes well. I have wavy thick hair that tends to get frizzy in the summer. A previous hair dresser cut my hair all in one line, which made me get a triangle head. I called David Michael Hair Studio asking for an appointment with someone who can do wavy hair and can do layers. I was set up with an appointment with Sara. She ended up cutting the top of my hair way to short and leaving the bottom long...so now it looks like I have a bobble head with rat tails sticking out. I measured that in the front, the length between the longest hairs and second longest are a good 2 inches....horrible. If I could give this salon 0 stars I would. So after careful consideration I decided to get a body wave in my hair in order to put a little curl in my usually frizzy, unmanageably flat hair. I didn't want to go to just any salon so I did some research and found the David Michael Salon, it was "supposedly" the best salon in Bergen County! When I got there I met the stylist, Dawn Paglia; she was nice. The salon was decent, the atmosphere was nice; they offered me coffee or water while I was in the chair. I had no initial problems at the salon itself. After everything was said and done, Dawn said it wouldn't be smart to blow dry my hair and instead she put some products in it.. I don't normally put a lot of product in my hair but Dawn put like 4 or 5 different creams and mouses in my hair and sent me on my way. I wasn't allowed to shampoo or condition my hair for a few days but she said I could wet it if I wanted to. With all the products in my hair my head felt really heavy and my hair had a weird texture to it so I went into the bathroom and wet my hair a little. Once my hair was a little wet it started to take on a "gummy" feel to it, like my hair was made of some kind of jello! I left it alone for a while and then right before bed decided to run a large toothed comb through my hair, to my dismay my hair began to fall out!!! The next morning I called the salon and they told me that Dawn was busy and had no time to see me and not to bother coming in, I wasn't dealing with that nonsense so I went in anyway. When I got there Dawn was too busy so they put a conditioner in my hair and then I had to wait another two hours before Dawn had time to see me. Dawn washed the conditioner out of my hair and cut it. To say that it looked like Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles cut my hair would be an understatement. This lady BUTCHERED my hair, it was chopped up, uneven and looked as if she had actually tried to make zig zags in the back of my head. It looked like had taken a head first fall into a wood chipper. To make matters worse my hair felt like dried up grass or straw, it was so completely dried out. I had to go to a completely different salon for them to fix it, they fixed it but their was not much they could do because Dawn had already cut almost all of my hair off and because my hair is so dead. By the way the "body wave" they claimed they gave me was actually a perm. To say that this entire experience was a nightmare would be a total and complete understatement.... I have gone to this salon and seen Lindsey about 5-6 times over the past 2 years. She always did a good job until about two weeks ago when I made an appt for 9:00 on a Saturday for just a blow out. I booked it first thing in the morning since I had a wedding on Long Island, and even called the night before to confirm my time. As it turns out, Lindsey strolled in late like it was no big deal, chatted with some of the other hair dressers and then asked someone to wash my hair. Seriously? Knowing that you were going to be late, you couldn't have called reception and asked that someone wash my hair so that I was ready to go when you clocked in? She never apologized and couldn't figure out why I was so annoyed. Maybe she doesn't mind showing up to work and other events 10-15 minutes behind, but most of the world does. Shame on you. For now on I am going to Liz. I used her once when Lindsey was booked and I really needed a cut. She is actually better but I felt guilty switching hairdressers, so went back to Lindsey which was a big mistake. So much for being loyal. read more
