Dr. Bender has been my sons doctor from the beginning and now for my newborn daughter. He is always in a good mood, funny and caring but serious when he needs to be. He is patient and doesn't rush the appointment. Dr. Bender always asks if I have any questions and to me that is super important. This review is long overdue. Dr Bender has been taking care of my son for the last 4 years. As a parent of 4 children, and now with one in college, I have probably had an encounter with the majority of the pediatricians that currently practice in Burbank due to various insurance changes. Dr.Bender is by far and away the best pediatrician I have encountered. Everything that others have written in previous reviews is true, he is compassionate, caring, always with a smile, approachable, and usually has me laughing within the first minute of the encounter. I think he sets himself apart from the other pediatricians I have seen for three reasons: 1) Accessibility- Dr Bender is very busy, but always will call me back on the same day that I call with question. It is reassuring that if I have a concern about my son, that I'm going to get advice that day. 2) He listens to every concern I have- Other pediatricians I have dealt with, always seem to be in a rush, and never give me time to ask my questions. At every check up, Dr Bender, will sit down, and the first question he asks is "Do you have any questions or concerns about your son that you want to talk about today". No matter how many questions I have, he answers all of them thoroughly, and never makes me feel like I need to hurry up because I'm asking too many questions (and I usually have a lot of questions). It is always reassuring to know I'm going to leave each check-up with all of my concerns addressed. 3). He EDUCATES me. When I bring in my son when he is sick, Dr. Bender will examine him thoroughly, and then tell what he thinks my son has. But it doesn't stop there, many times going into the visit, I have felt like my child was sick enough to need medication, and in these instances, Dr. Bender has explained to me why he thinks that medications are not necessary, and also counsels me on things to look for that if they occur I should notify him immediately. Prior to switching to Dr. Bender I felt like I was always going to the ER when my child was sick because I couldn't get in with my pediatrician, and needed reassurance. Now, due to Dr. Bender's counseling I feel much more confident at being at home with a sick child, at have not been to the ER in years. My son has grown very attached to Dr Bender, and loves going to see him. I am able to use the way he feels about him to get him to do things at home. "Remember what Dr. Bender said, its important to each your vegetables everyday". Works every time. Lastly, this review would not be complete without mentioning Dr Bender's amazing nurse Ruth. I have to agree with everything that Kenny said in a previous review. Most nurses I have dealt with always seem unhappy, and very cold. Ruth has always greeted my son with a smile, is gentle with him, and she treats him as if he were her son. On his last visit, he was scared about his vaccinations, Ruth took time to comfort him, make him at ease, and after it was done, he told me they didn't hurt at all. Thank you Ruth!! Its simple, Dr Bender and Ruth, make a great team, and provide exceptional heartfelt care. If you want the same for your child look no further. I have been taking my daughter to Dr Bender since she was born in February, the front staff is so efficient, juggling phone calls and still greeting in parents. There is a warm feeling when entering, they really care about you and your child. The nurses are beyond amazing at making sure they say everything they are doing and why. I want to jump back in and express how happy we are with Dr. David Bender! We have moved all three of our children with Dr. Bender since our three-year-old has been born. Dr. Bender is compassionate, understanding and definitely professional! Recently or 13 year old boy was injured during a little league baseball game. We took him to the emergency room where they x-rayed his shoulder and misdiagnosed / missed the actual injury. After a few days of still being in pain we went to see Dr. Bender who is able to diagnose the injury correctly, get new x-rays and get us to a specialist within 24 hours. On that note, I wanted to add our gratitude for his nurse Ruth. Ruth is an amazing person who has been there assisting us every time we have gone into Dr. Bender's office. Ruth it's very knowledgeable, patient, professional and friendly. Ruth is definitely an employee in that office that adds to our wonderful experience of when we go to see Dr. Bender with our children. Dr bender has been my son pediatrician for 8 years now but, as another reviewer said, he's good for health check ups mostly. I had concerns with my kids since he was a baby because he was an extremely picky eater and I tryed to talk about that concern with Dr bender but he kept telling me it was normal. It wasn't. This year I told Dr bender that the school and I thought my son was in the spectrum/had autism and if he could refer me to a specialist to get him tested. He told me my son didn't looked autistic . Luckily, I got an appointment with another pediatrician at chla who actually referred me to a specialist and indeed my son is in the spectrum with generalized anxiety and food/eating is part of this. His pediatrician at chla got me a prescription for Kate farms which is a better version of a pediasure and he finally gained a little weight. Now that we know he has anxiety, we try to bother him less about eating and he is getting better knowing that we understand him. Returning to Dr Bender, I really think he should listen more to the parents. I know he's the Dr but we also know our kids. I don't want to change Dr's but I think it's time. I have given him enough opportunities. read more

Dr. Bender at first seemed friendly and helpful. I loved that he opened communication to me regarding any concerns or questions, allowing a 24hr availability over the phone. The staff is super friendly and the office is clean and nice. However, at my daughter's 2 month check up, he was rude and seemed in a rush. He spoke over me when I was speaking about my daughter. He was extremely condescending and acted as though I couldn't possibly know any better when it came to my daughter. He made some suggestions that I was uncomfortable with and in expressing my disagreement he, again, preceded to speak over me as if I didn't know any better. I value very much a parent-doctor relationship, a relationship in which the two can come together to make decisions regarding the child. Dr. Bender is not the sort of doctor who is open to such a relationship. He prefers to tell you, the parent, what to do because, after all, he's a doctor and knows better than you. I had my first appointment with Dr. Bender for my newborn and was very pleased with my experience. Their receptionist was easy to communicate with over the phone about scheduling my appointment. I called on a Monday morning and was able to get an appointment for the following day. I loved the fact that they have a separate newborn waiting area and that the office is super punctual. Our appointment was at 8:30 and by 8:35 we were getting babies weight and height checked and DR came in literally two mins later. Our second appointment was the exact same so it wasn't a random blessing gifted upon us haha. Dr. Bender is super nice and welcoming. Cracked some jokes, answered any questions we had and both dad and I loved the vibe he gave off. Little Luna also liked him and was super happy being in and out of the office within 20 mins. Here's my problem: Dr. Bender requests good reviews on Yelp. He asked us a while ago during the last visit, and I don't think he realized it, but it was rather awkward the way he expected us to do this for him. Also, my wife has a Yelp page and we know it's a clear violation of their policies to ask for good reviews. Still, no big deal, we just didn't review. But: our next physical was coming up and my wife got nervous because we hadn't reviewed him yet. So I went and checked out his previous reviews to make up my mind, and boy, it did. As an FYI, I have a background in criminal psychology. Looking at some of the other reviews made those senses come alive again and I thought, we're probably not the only ones he asked. No offense if I'm wrong, but for example the last review by Kristin P. differs from all her others in length, writing style, and speech. I'd go out on a limb here and say it's fake, written by somebody else. And that really made me mad and led to my one-star review. We chose Dr. Bender because my wife's friend went there and it was an easy way to a pediatrician, but many others do their research and choose their doctor because of their reviews. Knowing how Dr. Bender gets them led me to question him. I asked our other friends about their pediatricians, and now I wish I'd done my research sooner. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Bender is a nice guy, think bro-type. I'm sure he knows what he is doing, although our kid has been healthy so far, so luckily for us no need to test his knowledge when our kid is sick. But: The visits are usually some chatting about sports and joking with us, then a quick look at the growth curve and our kid, then he is out. And we were fine with that, but from what I hear--and again, hearsay, which brought us into this position in the first place--those visits can, and possibly should, be more thorough. I guess we'll find out with the next physical, which we booked with somebody else. read more

I don't have much to say about Dr. Bender because I've only been able to have an appointment with him once. He's either on vacation or just has no availability. When I finally got an appointment for my sons 4 month wellness check I arrived 15 mins late (you try making it on time with a 3 year old and 4 month old at 8am). 8am was the only time available and yeah I was late but when I got there the receptionist said I missed my whole appointment and to top it off Dr. Bender didn't have any opening for like 3 weeks! My baby needed his shots... I had an appointment around the corner at 9am so I asked if my husband could wait with my son to be squeezed in any time from 8:15-9:30 and the receptionist said no. Like what? She just flat out turned us away. I was so upset I almost switched doctors then and there. The receptionists are HORRIBLE. My son has seen the nurse practitioner at the same office for 3 visits now and she's wonderful! read more

After my first appointment with Dr. Bender, I was a bit skeptical about having such a young pediatrician. I decided to give it a chance. I am very happy I did! Dr. Bender is very caring, friendly and funny! He makes you feel very comfortable and answers all of your questions and calls you back if you leave a message for him. I took my baby boy to see Dr. Bender for the first time when he got sick with a stomach flu. Dr. Bender was good, informative and even called the next day to check how my baby was feeling. I decided to continue seeing dr. Bender for my baby's regular check ups every three months, his previous Dr. transferred all the info to his office, I called twice to make sure that dr. Bender had all the info up to date for the app. When I got there I had to try to remember all the details because he didn't know my son's history ( I don't think he read any of my son's info before the visit) My son missed a vaccine in the past, so he said he will have it in the next app (three months later). The next app. no body remembered what I was talking about, again I had to explain the whole thing and again my son went home without the missing vaccine for another next visit in another three months . How disappointing. I will continue looking for a good pediatrician that will - if not remember my son-, at least look at his chart before his app. read more

I have 4 boys, so I have been through a lot of pediatricians. Once I found him it was perfect. My boys never were scared to go see him. They were not scared of doctor appointments. When they felt sick they would ask me to take them to see their doctor. He has a way to make them feel comfortable and trustful with him. He is also very thorough and takes his time with his patients. He gets to know them. His patients aren't just dollar signs to him, he really cares for them. My middle son got really sick and was hospitalized. After the whole ordeal Dr. Bender always made time for him and always referred him to the best specialists. Dr. Bender was on a list of recommended pediatricians on a list from my obgyn and I chose Dr. Bender after reading his reviews on Yelp. Based on our visits thus far and from his associates while we were in the hospital after delivering our baby, I'm so happy we went with Dr. Bender and his office. All the doctors on call are very helpful and thorough and Dr. Bender never makes us feel rushed or that our questions are ridiculous (which can happen as first time parents) when we visit his office. We also love that there is a 24 hour line that we can call with a doctor on-call in the event of an emergency (although we luckily haven't had to use it). His office staff is great as well. The receptionist in the front is completely inhumane and treated us so poorly. At first my husband went to see doctor bender with our son and he started crying during the examination and needed me to come in. Due to COVID two parents can't go inside so we agreed on one person only. My husband was trying to tell them he got the OK from doctor for us to switch and I go inside and he stays outside. The women working in the front made it very hard and said " Well, you should've gone in there with him first" While my son is naked with no clothes screaming his head off because he had to leave the examination room so my husband can go ahead and grab me. We were still patient with them until she told us to WAIT even furthermore while she makes a NEW call with another patient. WHAT?!?! My son has a medical emergency that he came in for how can you make him wait NAKED screaming in the waiting room crying his head off while you make a new call??? She could've EASILY put the other person on the line on HOLD while she got up off her LAZY bum and checked my temperature and let me in and continue the check up for my son. Some people are NOT meant to be working in a field with COMPASSION, care, and with children. She had a smile on her nasty face while she was doing all of this too as if she enjoyed giving us a hard time. I pray nothing but god to handle these types of monsters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I took my son in to see Dr. Bender for a sinus infection and Dr. Bender was exceptional with him. He has Down Syndrome and can be difficult sometimes to understand and also to talk to when he would rather play than answer the questions. Dr. Bender was very patient with him, explained exactly what he was doing and why and very quickly earned his trust. I have had my other son seen by Dr. Bender before and he has proven to me that he is very good with kids and I am lucky to have found him.
