Visiting Cleveland from California my one must is to visit Dave's Cosmic Subs- it is my favorite sandwich I've had and is super nostalgic for me since I grew up in Cleveland. The University Circle location is probably the one I've been to most often. I heard they were under new management but didn't think much about it since they're all franchises of the Original Chagrin Falls location and even with different owners the quality, in my experience, has been pretty consistent. When we stopped in it looked like the same store I've known and loved over the years and I ordered my two favorites- the Original and the Crazy (the best IMO) We took them to go and I could barely wait to dig in. The first thing I noticed as I unwrapped the Original was there was no pickle- I thought it may have fallen out but after unwrapping both and checking the bag and floor I realized they didn't add them. Was this an oversight or has management 86ed the pickles!? That was a small disappointment for sure. The sandwiches also looked a bit smaller than I remember, and I have a lot of pictures over the years to compare them to- I chalked it up to inflation, a lot of things are getting smaller as they rise in price. Then I bit into it and the crispy bread was just not it. The bread was still good, but not cooked enough. Usually pieces of it flake off as you eat and you get the crispy outside with the fluffy, fresh inside. The juxtaposition of texture is part of what makes these sandwiches my favorite. It was soft bread with the amazing sauce, lettuce, tomato meats and banana peppers on the Original- still tasty but not what I've come to expect over the 25 years I've been eating these subs. The staff was friendly and they have the indoor and outdoor seating still, but they might want to do some quality control on the sandwiches they're sending out to customers. I wish I had time during my visit to stop by the Chagrin Falls location to compare and see if it's franchise wide or just this location. To the business, I hope the undercooked bread and lack of pickles was just an off moment. Please keep the original amazing quality going. To people looking to try Dave's, it's still so delicious and I recommend buying sauce to use at home. I got three bottles to bring back to California and I'll be using it on everything. read more

The worst! Took my son for lunch. Waited a very long time, then received the wrong food. Waited another 30 minutes while they continued to make every other order instead of fixing ours. Finally said we had to leave, please refund my charge. The cashier literally kept her back to us and wouldn't acknowledge my request. Finally had to get the manager. Told me to put my card in for the credit. It produced another receipt with a 2nd charge. He said "that's all he knows about how to process a refund and there is nothing more he can do". Of course, when reviewing my credit card, I was charged a second time. After not getting the right food, not eating anything for lunch, being ignored, and getting charged twice, the "lovely" cashier mumbled for me "not to come back". Absolutely unbelievably great super moist dense fudgy brownies. I got the hot tuna melt which ones in regular size on a crispy on the outside toasted white roll. It had lettuce, tomato, tuna with small bell pepper bits mixed in, I believe oregano, and melted cheddar atop. Really needed some mayo. With two brownies and a bottle of soda the total was just under $15 which is not a bad deal. It came with a slice of dill pickle wrapped in with the sandwich. Took about 4 minutes for order to walking out. Soda machine not in order right now so all drinks are bottled. I'll have to come in again for the life changing brownies and perhaps a more impressive sandwich. read more

Good Evening, I ordered 3 tuna subs through UberEats. All 3 subs were ordered with extra tuna which I was charged $5 extra for each sub ($15). In addition, I ordered extra tomato and extra pickles for 2 of the subs. The order arrived without the extra tuna on all 3 subs and without the extra tomatoes and pickles that I was charged extra for. The subs arrived just like the regular subs. Totally unacceptable for the amount of money charged. Called the establishment and was told that extra meat is usually only $2 dollars extra but because I ordered through Uber Eats, extra meat is $5 per sub. A total of $58 dollars for 3 small subs. Dave's Cosmic Subs, you should be ashamed to deliver such an substandard food order. Total disappointment. read more

Something has happened to this DCS location to cause the quality and value to seriously decline. I've ordered my favorite sub twice in the last 6 months and both times neither matched the quality that I'm used to from DCS. Two thin slices of turkey on a *soft* roll (not crunchy!) and an over abundance of sauce. This sandwich used to be a special treat. I will never order here again. The question is - have all DCS gone this way? It is a franchise of sorts. So could this be a template for all stores? I hope not. That cute shop in Chagrin Falls started a really good thing some years ago. Dave himself would be disappointed. This was one of my favorite places when we lived in the neighborhood-- and they deliver on SkipTheDishes as well as UberEats, which makes it even better. I'm a huge fan of the meatball sub: the meatballs are delicious, the sauce is flavorful and not at all pasty, and it has just the right amount of cheese. I rarely branched out from the meatball, but remember that the chicken cordon bleu and a few of the turkey options are good as well. Bread options are just white and wheat, but both are high quality, soft on the inside and crisp on the crust side. Their fries are a little soggy for my liking but the coleslaw is delicious, and they offer a plethora of chips. The price is right for the portion size. This is an Ohio original Cleveland can be proud of. read more

I am so incredibly disappointed to be leaving this review, but it's deserved. We haven't eaten from Dave's in years because of food allergies. We recently heard adjustments had been made to accommodate the allergy so we decided to pop in on a weeknight to grab a couple of quick subs to go. The shop didn't seem that busy, but it took 45 minutes to get our order. We were also disappointed to not have pickles included, but we were already home so no biggie. Tonight our plans changed so we decided to grab dinner again from Dave's. We thought we were ordering items that fit the description on the menu. What we received was a far cry from what we have come to expect from Dave's over the years. Our subs barely resembled the sub pictured on the website. Overall, our sandwiches were less than acceptable. To start off, one family member added protein, we were charged for it, but we didn't receive it. One sandwich literally had ONE measly banana pepper on it and two other subs literally had three slices of banana pepper. All of the sandwiches were supposed to be "smothered in Dave's Cosmic sauce" but the sauce was literally nonexistent or barely there depending on the sub. In addition, we requested pickles per the sign on the menu, and I'm sorry to report, we didn't receive any. Finally, adding insult to injury, we tipped the servers (for take out). What a bummer. Pretty sure I am giving myself whiplash over how quickly I am changing my mind about this place. The previous two times I came here, it was hunky dorey! The sandwiches of course could not compare to the original location, but were acceptable based off of convenience and the fact that I am in love with Dave's Special Sauce. This last visit though... HORRENDOUS. We placed a work order well ahead of pick-up time. Upon arrival NOTHING IS MADE. So of course, they continue being slow and take 45 minutes to make our order wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. Dave's is one of my favorite places to get a sandwich and this location just happened to be my first experience. I've been back a couple times since. It's a good spot to grab some quick grubbed before game nights at my buddy's place up the street. There is a new location that opened close to home now so I tend to go there more often but the point is, Dave's rocks! The trippy decor is homage to all things psychedelic, music and pop culture. Take a look around to find your favorite artists on the walls. The service mimics this and is very laid back and chill but they take care of you at the same time. I've always had a quick and interactive experience with these guys, even when we have 5 guys placing orders. Maybe 10 minutes tops to get all of our food and out the door. We typically get orders to go but there is plenty of room inside to eat and it always looks clean. I've had a lot of sandwiches but the standouts for me are, the Original Dave, Crazy Dave and Dave's World Famous. Make sure you get lots of Dave's Cosmic Sauce! This stuff is killer! Dave's Horseradish on the World Famous is pretty rad too! They load up the sandwiches with fresh meats and veggies to the point that it almost doesn't close. Grab a bag of Dirty Chips while you are at it and you have a sandwich meal worthy of your hard earned money! Salt & Vinegar Dirty chips are my poison. Oh, almost forgot about the pickle. If zero was an option that is what this location deserves based on service. We ordered and we told 20-25 minutes, after 40 minutes I asked if it would be ready soon and didn't get a response. We asked for a refund which the employee couldn't do and no one with that ability was there. They agreed to finally make the sandwich after the complaint. I am amazed they can stay in business with such poor service. It isn't even like it was busy they just didn't make sandwiches and disappeared for 10-20 minutes. The fact that we left a tip at the time of placing the order with my card makes this more frustrating as the service didn't warrant any tip (I like tipping in any situation but never would here or at least wait til after the order is made to determine if I would tip) My only guess is that the reason this place still can exist is the sandwiches are very good, but not worth the wait. If there were ever a Mexican Standoff including Subway, Quizno's, and Dave's Cosmic Subs where each subs shop had to stare down the other sub shops, and hope he guesses correctly on which one to shoot first, Dave's would win. Likely because Subway and Quizno's do not see Dave's as competition. If, however, it was Subway AND Quizno's against Dave's, Dave's would still win. This is because they have not only the rockin-est, but also the tastiest subs around. And to this San Francisco ex-pat, the decor makes me feel like I'm home. The bread, I think, is what really makes these subs killer. Every bite is tasty from bite to chew to swallow. The subs are really large, however, and a large can easily feed three people. The smaller size might not quite serve two, but if you're not starving, it certainly can. This location features a nice patio for those two months when you can sit outside in Cleveland. Awesome sauce and a meal for less than $10 are main selling points. The bread's more like a baguette in texture compared to the fluffier white bread on a Subway or Quizznos. Some like the former, some like the latter. I prefer softer bread. Just know what you tend to like, nothing wrong either way. Here's the clincher: They have delicious, juicy, thinly-sliced corned beef on rye; served hot. They have hotdogs too. For me at least, these two added options on the menu alone make this the winner in the battle of the franchise sub-shops. They also have bottled specialty sodas. I have always enjoyed Daves Cosmic Subs, I love the Far Out Chicken mixed with the atmosphere that surrounds you as you eat. Great hand paintings and memorabilia of the 60's, 70's and 80's rock legends! The music being played always adds to The Experience! Now the reason I only gave it two stars. The girl taking orders at the corner on 9/4/11 at noon was full of attitude with not only my order, but many orders I overheard while waiting, way to make first time customers feel welcome. She basically acted as if she was too tired and hassled to take each order. Lazy in speech too, many customers could not even understand her because she was rushing her speech to get the interaction over with. As I looked for a clean table in the restaurant there was not a single one, Seven tables sat dirty. When I turned to her to get a towel she knew exactly what I had been looking at. She then picked up the towel and spray bottle and walked in the back. Never came out to clean, when I looked back she was sitting down texting on her phone. Tables never were cleaned. Daves is about The Experience, head to Chagrin Falls or Hudson to get friendly service and the ability to sit and enjoy Daves the way it was supposed to be enjoyed. read more

What a nice place! I came here for lunch while I was working at a nearby school. The store front was bright and I loved the decorations and music playing. I ordered the # 5 and was very pleased with my sandwich. The bread was great and everything tasted fresh and complimented each other very nicely. The price is a bit high given the size of the sandwiches. They fill their sandwiches up with shredded cheese trying to make the sandwich look larger than it actually is plus the shredded cheese tastes very bland with the strong meats like salami, ham, etc. I don't know if its the type of cheese or the shredded texture, but it's not any good. The lettuce too was shredded (someone really likes using the shredding machine) and totally tasteless, bland tomatoes. It's summer, why can't these places source better tomatoes this time of year? I have been going here every 3 weeks for several years and the food has been really consistant, the service quick, but the price has steadily increased and for some odd reason, the last few times I've ordered, the pickle has either been non existant or it's lookinb pretty wilted. Ridiculous. Ordered for my entire team after a soccer game to be delivered to the bus. No problem. 2 minutes away. They still found a way to be 30 minutes late. They deliver two large salads and three trays of sandwiches. No plates. No forks. No balls. No way to eat it. I call and the guy acts like it's me. "We don't do that." Really? Subs are decent and pretty cheap. If you go on a Saturday or sometime during the summer there will probably be a long board in your way while waiting in line. If it is crowded just take your food to go because someone might ask you about the type of vibes your trying to give off. read more
