I have lived in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland for 6 years and have NEVER been to Grum's Sub Shop, a beloved local institution, until a blustery November day when my ADHD brain refused to let me move on with my day until I ate a sandwich. After a brief glance at the menu (and picking up a gummy worm flavored diet mountain dew from their vending machine...), I ordered their Grum Sandwich (7" for $8) without peppers and swapped out the oil for stadium mustard as well as an order of their plain "grumizza" to indulge in for dinner. It was only $2.75!!! How can I resist that?? I am not exaggerating when I say that I would die for this sandwich and I don't know if it was my obsessive ADHD brain talking or not, but it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. There was sooooo much meat on there, the spice mix was amazing, and the bread.... woweeee wow, so soft and fluffy and oh my god delicious. AND IT WAS ONLY 8 DOLLARS. The grumizza made for a great dinner as well. Using the same bread as the sandwiches, they loaded it up with sauce, ooey gooey cheese, and that spice mix I love so much. I hit my carb quota for a week in just one day but my god, was it worth it! I should also mention the place was packed and the diligent staff worked very hard to keep up with all the orders and they did a great job! My only suggestion is adding the ability to provide customers with a glass of water. I DEFINITELY will be back!!! read more

I've had this place numerous times. Very quick and simple subs. Not many sides and vending machine soda. Has both hot and cold choices. They are know for the "Grumsteer" but all the subs I've had have been delicious. Filled to the brim with meat and dressings. $8 for a half and $16 for a full. Turkey sub is great as is the Roast Beef. I will continue to eat here. It is busy and has limited hours. 8.3 out of 10. read more

My coworkers love ordering from this place for our sprint retros and hackathons. They have a variety of different subs both hot and cold. Their full sizes are giant and cannot be eaten in one sitting! Their hot toasted subs are great. The bread is a little basic though. This place is a local institution and has changed little since my college days over 30 years ago. Most of the decorations are the same, this place is timeless. Based off many visits over decades. Located on/Coventry, little take out shop serves a number of top quality subs. If you get a full size, you should be really hungry. Half is enough for most people I think. I love the Grum, but try different subs until you find your favorite. Service is typically friendly and reasonably quick. You can take it home or walk down the street and eat on a bench or the common area. If you want a sub, this is the place. read more

Store is super clean upon entry. They have a variety of cold and hot subs that are also customizable. The sandwiches are really good for the prices, they are huge. The pickles are also pretty good. It took less than 15 minutes for two cold subs. read more

Just under $14 for a large sub which is enough for two meals. My sub was done in six minutes flat and was hot to boot. My Grumsteer today had a lot of roast beef and horseradish sauce under melty cheese. It was the most flavorful I've had in a Grum's sandwich and the bread was super soft and fresh too! read more

This place is unmatched! I have literally been coming here over 30 years and the quality has never changed. This small, old school sub shot never disappoints; the best subs IMO and quick, kind service always. My all time favorite is the turkey ridge, on Italian, extra mayo, extra onion and add banana peppers. I never go astray but my family loves several other subs like including the grum and the grumster. The 1/2 sub definitely feeds 2 and the whole is enough for my family of 3 to share. I drive 20 minutes and pass several big box sub shops to come here. If they ever close my life will never be the same. read more

I was on my way to the east side of Cleveland/Cleveland Heights and needed a quick bite. I was driving down coventry and I saw a sign in a store window about subs for a game and guess the building was a sub place. There was not any store sign that I could see until you got in the store, but it still seemed to have a pretty good flow of business. The service was not spectacular, but that's probably because Grums is just a quick in and out sub place. The food was pretty good, but it was a bit dirty inside. read more

They got my order wrong- didn't offer to fix it and just handed me my money back, then I came back a week later & when I walked in they told me they can't serve me and I'm not welcome back anymore. They couldn't give me a reason why. My first experience of Grum's reflected the review I gave. But I wanted to change it because after the 2nd time things were much better. The sub was great. They added oil and vinegar this time which made the sub so much better. I was really pleased! Service was good and actually nice and helpful. I really liked it all. So we kept coming back. We eventually noticed they completely re-did their menu. It looks incredible now!! They got a local artist to help them design it, so we were told. It really looks amazing. So, when I write, know it is of personal preference that I do so. Nothing more, nothing less. First, the service. It was great! I came in. I ordered and 5 minutes later received with a smile. What can I say? For a sandwich shop, that is what I expect. Efficient, courteous service. Nothing more, nothing less. Now, the sandwich. I was raised in North Jersey. The land of crisp crust, soft yet textured bread. Italian style subs, cold cuts are laid out in layers inside, veggies of choice (ok, LTO) inside, a quick dash of oregano, a splash of V&O, maybe some banana peppers and off you go! This is what I crave. Nothing more, nothing less. Grums provides a sandwich. Completely soft hoagie style bread, the cold cuts are folded up into the bread (sort of like the first sandwich I ever made). There is a sprinkle of Italian season and no moisture what so ever (read: no V&O. A quintessential ingredient for Italian sandwiches). Is this bad? No. For Ohio, this may be perfect. As the proud owner of grums for over 20 years I would like to respond to a recent review left by Luis A. Luis had been coming into our store quite often for the previous month and had consistently been rude to my employees to the point when they DREADED every time he can in. On the day he speaks of he ordered what he usually did. Me, the owner made his sandwich, put it in his bag and I handed it to him and said "have a good one buddy". He takes the bag and kinda lifts it up and down like he's a human scale and says "what is this?". I politely responded "that's your sandwich, that's what you ordered". He proceeds to say "this is too light". I said "I don't know what to tell you, I put everything in there like i have for the last 20 years". He responded by saying "I'm not paying for this". By this point he had already paid so I told the employee to give him his money back, then he walked out the door. He got the EXACT sandwich he ordered, he just didn't think it was heavy enough. After he left I told the other employees the next time he came in to tell him he wouldn't be served. He showed up a week later and my brother, the co owner told him we wouldn't serve him. Luis then tried to "big time" my brother and say who do I need to talk to and my brother politely informed him that he was one of the owners and there wasn't anyone who was going to change it. Combine having to throw the sandwich away along with his continuous awful attitude and being rude to our employees it was an extremely easy decision. I have never responded before to a negative review but this one was so delusional and absurd I felt the need to defend our store. As a quick side note, he is right about one thing. We do have a sign that says "we will not help you if you are on your phone, please hang up, then order". He says this is distasteful. I say distasteful is being rude and talking on your phone while someone is trying to help you and take your order. read more

Like any sub place, you have to venture outside of your usuals to get a real assessment. Agreed with other folks stating that is slightly on pricier, but given its proximity to me, it's a worthwhile trade off. Not to mention, you do get a lot of food. We were provided with a free lunch today, which was exciting. Then, we were told we could only order a half sandwich, and were kind of disappointed. As it turns out, a half sandwich at Grum's is HUGE and our disappointment was misplaced. I had the "All American," which is ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, and banana peppers. The quality of the ingredients very good, and I really liked their seasoning mix. However, it's a TON of bread, which makes it a little bit dry. I don't know if I've ever said this about a sandwich before, but this might've actually benefited from just a bit of mayo. If I go again, I'm hoping to try one of the the hot subs. Prices are actually pretty reasonable-- $6.60 for a huge seven inch "half" sandwich and around $12 for what must be a ridiculously large whole sandwich-- so as it turns out, Grum's is worth getting excited about. read more

Stopped in for a quick sub to go. I selected the full turkey ridge. This monster sub was enough to feed 3 of us. The freshly baked Italian bread was soft and tasty. The turkey was piled high and the Italian seasonings really brought out the flavor. I opted for light mayo and no onions as they aren't my favorite. Crisp tomato and lettuce rounded out this classic. I was happy to see some updates for antiviral spread. This included gloves provided for customers and plexi at both the payment and pickup areas. Grum's is an institution and is always a go to spot for a delicious sub. The staff was very friendly and were wearing gloves and masks to keep safe. Enjoy! It's worth leaving the house! read more

I've gone to Grums many times over the last 10 years-- their subs are very good for the price and the size. I particularly like the "Hot Grumster" and used to get it at least once a month to fulfill a craving. I've stopped going to Grums in the last couple of years, though, because the service is just terrible. Every time I call to place an order, someone picks up the phone to take my order with a tone like they're chained to the wall, being forced to make sandwiches in forced labor. They don't care and it's very unnerving. I've returned over and over again, hoping that the next time will prove different and that I'll interact with someone who actually cares, even a little bit. It never happens. It's disappointing, considering how long they've been there (since the 70s, I believe?). They also have a very bizarre "no orders over $12 after 5pm" rule, which makes no sense to me considering they close at 10pm and almost all of the subs ARE $12. Again. The subs are good. The service? Terrible. And with that, I'm choosing to take my business elsewhere moving forward. Order at your own risk. read more

Sadly, I did not love this place like I had hoped to from reading everyone else's reviews. I ordered the hot turkey ridge... I think they call it Zach's Hot Turkey, with the onions on side (didn't add them in the end because they were raw). The bread was soggy, wayyy too much mayo, too much turkey meat, not enough spice. It is a large sandwich, but it underwhelmed me. I felt like I was eating a Jimmy John's turkey sandwich without the alfalfa sprouts on soggy french bread. Maybe I ordered wrong? Who knows. I give the food one star, and then another star just because the people working there were so nice. I came here about a week ago. We came near closing, and the counter guys were incredibly courteous and accommodating. My boyfriend and I each had a half-sub - I had a half portion of the Gamooza Grum. The sub was good, but seemed pretty standard fare, and I felt that for the size, it was a touch expensive. My biggest problem with this establishment was a lack of vegetarian options; I suppose I could just make my own sub, but I really respect shops that try to hard to accommodate people who, for whatever reason, don't wish to eat meat. Not counting the salads (because honestly, most people can throw some vegetables into a bowl without too much of a problem) or sides, I saw two vegetarian meal options, which was pretty disappointing. There are many ways to make a sub, and every sub does not need to have meat on it. In addition, there is room in the lobby for one or two tables, but the space seems kind of wasted the way it's set up, and there's little seating (and no tables at all!) in the shop. I would love for the available space to be used in a way that encourages diners to sit, even if for just long enough to eat their sub, and enjoy the casual feel of the place; again, when I visited, there were two really great guys running it, but the lack of furniture left me with little desire to just sit and eat. That being said, I will probably revisit this establishment and try the other vegetarian sub because I had a pretty good experience, but I won't be rushing back any time soon. read more

So the customer service was a little off. I called at 8 pm on a Saturday to place a pick up order and was told they don't take phone orders an hour before close. A little odd, but OK. I walk over and their posted hours say they're open until 10 pm on Saturdays. Since there wasn't a line it only took a few minutes to get the sub in the end anyway and it was fantastic. I got the Black Forest. I think it was a little too heavy on the lettuce, but I basically inhaled the sub. The meats were wonderful. The price was great. It's a little upsetting actually since it's about a 2 minute walk from my house. I'm tempted to go back today. I was going to take off a star cause of the customer service but the sub was so good, I can't justify that. read more

Grum's defines Cleveland as a sandwich center of the world. It's not possible to compare it to anything on the East Coast, in New Jersey, or Italy. That would be like arguing why pizza in Chicago is different from New York -- meaningless! They are distant relatives, at best. Also, why are all these one-star-nay-sayers going to the sandwich shop to make social pleasantries? We need sandwiches, not friendship. For decades Grum's has delivered consistent and excellent sandwich-making services. The sandwich is always done right. My favorite: Grum's Turkey Ridge sandwich -- after traveling the whole wide world and thinking about it for over 25 years -- is without any doubt the best sandwich on the planet. Grum's invented the oregano sprinkle, soft bread, thin onion, and a strong hit of never-sweet mayonnaise combo. All this invented long before Jared ever came to ruin Subway. One bite will transport you to all the glory of Cleveland circa 1995. I guarantee you will eat this entire sandwich and want more. May this great institution last forever. read more

I had Grum's the other week. I always get the large and eat one half now, the other half later. I forgot how much I really like the subs here. They are basic subs and the beauty is in their simplicity. I walked in and heard the newest Action Bronson album playing. The gentleman behind the counter started chatting it up about new music and gave me a decent recommendation. We both agreed that Roc Marciano is one of the best out of the newly revived NYC scene. Very nice people working here and excellent subs make this one of my favorite places to go for a quick sandwich on the go. read more
