Racism and Hate at Dave and Busters @21001 N.Tatum Blvd Pheonix AZ
Well who knew it was a crime to go to Dave & Busters in Pheonix AZ to watch the basketball game if u are a Lakers fan and a hispanic female?! As I sat down, I was in a trance watching the game, as I clapped or cheered out loud (isnt this OK in sports bars?) I caught dirty looks from the bartender and a girl (who sat a chair away from me). They both stone cold gave me the dirtiest looks! Well, (since I wasnt speaking to them nor anyone else) I was there to eat, enjoy the game and relax so I didnt think twice. Later, the game got intense...everyone cheered at one time or another, but when I cheered (to myself, wasnt talkin with anyone except the guy next to me who made small conversation with me from time to time but his breath smelled eww), the bartender got furious, he made comments to that girl one seat away from me that the bar need be sectioned off seperating Lakers and Suns fans. This guy was extremely angry! It was odd. The people next to me made a comment about Mexicans. Im part hispanic and again, I could care less- Im my own person and in some other parts of the country people are prejudice. I am born and raised in Cali and live in L.a. where it is a melting pot. There is just too much more important things to concern yourself there than with peoples races. Im a big believer of love and that sports of all things is what brings everyone together... this is one experience where I was sadly wrong. The bartender and the group next to me glared over when I cheered. Was it my fault the Lakers kept scoring? Was I suppose to sit there like a mute?? Eventually, the bartender whos name later I learned was Dustin, stopped serving me. By that I mean taking my plate away since I was done, refilling my water, the check...etc. When I asked him why he wasnt taking care of me... he made smart remarks. I could barely make out whole sentences. I then felt like I was being treated unfairly since I thanked him when he did bring my food over or initially got my drinks. Needless to say I felt uncomfortable. I asked him what was wrong, and didnt he want to get tipped?! GEEZ, I never talked with him other than my order and was minding my own business ENJOYING the game!! At that point he slammed the cash register with his fists a few times and stormed off. Here I was, a paying customer, again I spent 60$, was polite, and only cheered out when the Lakers scored. Again the guy next to me made small talk and we talked amoungst ourselves...thats it! The guy next to me with the bad breath made a comment that some people should not take the game so seriously and I agreed. As the game was over, and I was soo happy the Lakers won, Dustin was gone. I had to ask someone else to take my check. I had no idea my cheering, or the love for the game, or just being happy and passionate was reason to be treated this way. Needless to say I did something I never do, which was not leave a tip. I had let the girl at the bar know that this was not ok, and I plan to voice my experience. When I got home around 10 pm, I phoned this location and got a Manager by the name of Mike. He quickly said that he heard all about it and didnt blame Dustin since Dustin felt I was obnoxious. When I asked why? What was wrong so wrong he stopped serving me he then said, "I dont know, maybe he felt you had too much to drink?" Oh really, a few drinks throught out the whole game and I also ordered 3 plates of food, and had stopped ordering drinks way long before. If that was really the case why didnt Dustin fail to mention that to me or the manager...hmmm. Needless to say Mike the manager said he felt Dustin was justified,... the whole smashing down on the cash register with his fists, the snide remarks etc. So word to the wise people, in some parts of the country it doesnt matter how nice nor polite you are to some people, your nationality (with the illegal alien law tryin to be put into effect here in Pheonix), and the love you may have for the out of state team may leave you in a situation where the bartender and some regulars my loose control and treat you anything like a customer/patron. Dustin went as far as to say I was banterin to him other customers which is a lie. I dont know anyone there. The group that made some negative remarks about hispanics sided with Dustin as I watched Dustin quickly huddle with them (to arrange his game plan) in a chat as I was leaving and explaining in short what had happened to the girl behind the counter there. I do know that Dustin has a short fuse, and displaced anger issues. I didnt speak to anyone there. I was alone, and only the guy next to me talked to me from time to time. So word to the wise folks, if you are a hispanic female and have love for the team out of state DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY NOR TIME coming to Dave and Busters @21001 N.Tatum Blvd Pheonix AZ . Life is too short to be blantantly disprespected for your race and choice of team you may love read more
