Possibly a repeat review... I thought I had already reviewed them, but can't find it anywhere, so here goes again. I am so, so, so glad I found this company! They were able to recover my data completely!! The price tag was a bit of a shock at first, especially because more diligent data back-up would have saved my need to find them, but I fully believe it was worth the cost to recover about 6 months of work. Damen was great at keeping in touch, explaining processes, patiently answering ALL of my questions, and confirming my satisfaction with the results. It's a business that you hope to never need to be a repeat customer, but if needed, I would use them again and have already referred others as well. Thank you Damen and team!! read more

When I called to inquire about pricing for an SD card that had been corrupted I was told $150-200 for an easy fix and upwards of $2000 for a deconstruction/more intense recovery. I stated that the photos were of a wedding and it was very important that they be recovered. The estimate I was given was $600 and I truly believe it was because they knew how important the photos were as other reviews have mentioned. I was able to talk them down to $350 and had no choice but to pay it, knowing it would be a simple recovery and that I was being charged twice as much as the original price I was told it would be if it was on the easier side of things. When I got the photos back the image quality had been affected and the file type had changed from RAW to JPG. As a photographer that needs RAW images to effectively edit the photos I brought the issue to their attention and they said that's all they could do. So not only did I over pay but they never mentioned I wouldn't be getting back the actual files that I lost in their true form. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and will not be giving them my business in the future. read more

Very professional company. We've unfortunately had to take drives there, and they've been outstanding with communication. When they couldn't get any of our data, there was no charge. They give free estimates. They are the only place I would recommend anyone for lost data. Very fair with their pricing. read more

I never write reviews but after my experience with Data Tech Labs I felt I needed to share so no one else has to go through what I did. After my drive started making weird noises I called Data Tech Labs, the man I spoke with was knowledgeable, super friendly and immediately putt me at ease. However once I sent my hard drive to them Micheal D' Cruz was assigned to my case and I've never experienced such horrible customer service in my life. He never would call with updates, I would have to hound him for weeks just to get the tiniest sliver of information. I was in the middle of a work project and I just needed to know if the data retrieval was possible or if I should restart the project. After 1.5 months of getting the run around my hard drive was ultimately not recovered. Horrible customer service. Asking for a once a week progress report regarding the drive is the BARE MINIMUM when you're looking at spending upwards of 2k. They also told me before I sent my hard drive to them that they would cover expenses off shipping. After following up three times about this they told me the cost of my shipping was too much ( which they never specified) and won't reimburse me. In these situation customer service is EVERYTHING. The fact that this company so clearly does not put the customer first is appalling. Extremely disappointed and will never recommend this company to anyone. Save the headache and the money!! read more

My Seagate bit the dust a few months ago. I considered trying to fix it myself but decided it wasn't worth the risk, and to seek out a professional. My initial quote with DataTech was intimidating, to say the least, but they were willing to work with me on the price. They did great work--all of my files were recovered--and were easy to work with. It wasn't an overnight fix but I wasn't in a huge hurry. Really grateful for their service and flexibility. read more

Rickey assisted us with with recovering data from a G-Drive that had water damage. Very thorough recovery. We've never had to do this before and we were thinking it was a lost cause, but they got every photo and file back. It was a bit expensive but worth it to retrieve those memories. read more

I had to give them $100 because the drive had been opened. Once they gave me their diagnostic review and outrageous price to retrieve the data I asked them to send me the drive back. I was able to get the data back using another company for far less money. Be careful, they claim to be cost efficient but there are better data recovery places that charge much less. read more

I had a less enjoyable experience with DataTech labs than the other reviewers here. I had a hard drive die that was making a clicking noise every minute or so and wouldn't show any data, so I sent it into DataTech to have it evaluated. I was originally quoted between $900 and $1700, which was on par with where other recovery labs were quoting me. After sending it in, I was then told it would now be $2275 to be repaired due to severe failure and scratches on the platter. At that price it wasn't worth it to me so I had them send it back, hoping to make the repairs on my own. When I received the drive there was no evidence the drive was ever opened to be evaluated. The warranty void stickers and other stickers were untouched. After some youtube videos and $50 on ebay for an identical drive, I disassembled the drive and replaced the heads. I was able to recover all the data. When I looked at the platters I saw zero scratches on them. I'm not sure how they claimed there were scratches on it without opening it nor there being any. It seems to me it was just an excuse to charge me more than the original quote. read more

These guys saved my ass when my fiancee was finishing her last semester of grad school and the hard drive in her Powerbook died. I can configure your variously-ancient-or-brand-new network gear all day long, but I don't know jack about fixing busted filesystems; after trying to recover data from the drive via several different systems/tools (variously BSD, Linux, Windows and even a Darwin box), I admitted defeat. However, the effort was not to be abandoned, what with all the school-related files that were hidden somewhere in the bits; this is probably the only time in the 10 years I've known her that I saw my wife seriously threaten a computer with violence. Face it: paying someone to recover your data is *never cheap*. I shopped like mad around the Internet (for someplace to ship it) and around the Yellow Pages (for somewhere to drop it off), and Datatech Labs were by far the cheapest when it came to the initial bench fee (only $500, compared to the next-cheapest at almost twice that). The customer service was excellent, with friendly and helpful engineers there to answer my inane questions about fixing drives. The drive only had a logical issue, and they were able to recover 100% of the data without charging me for any extra time or hardware forensics; they have the capability to do much more, but thankfully I didn't need it. I'd trust Datatech Labs to recover my data again, which is about the best thing I think you can say about someone in this business. And cheap helps. They only get 4 stars because I have no basis for comparison (and hopefully never will) read more

DataTech Labs did an excellent job recovering the lost data on my thumb drive in a reasonable time frame. Very professional staff and great communicators. While transferring, organizing and deleting photos from my camera discs to my external hard drive to be organized before uploading to Google, my drive suddenly stopped reading. Not knowing of Data Tech yet, I took it to a big box store who told me three weeks later that none of the data was retrievable. I wasn't ready to give up so I brought my drive to Data Tech (on a later recommendation) for a second opinion. I tearfully handed over five years of pictures that were not yet backed up elsewhere and hoped to receive a different answer. Rickey was such a pleasure to work with. He understood that he held in his hand the damaged files of my daughter's high school years, international trips and five years of photos of experiences that could not be replaced. He also recommended that I bring in my photo discs to see what they could retrieve from those sources as well. Rickey collaborated with the Techs that he knew had the best experience for this job and he provided me progress updates along the way. He was personable with me, he didn't make promises of the end result, but reassured me that the best people were on the job and they would do what they could. Four weeks later, Data Tech was able to retrieve 6 of 7 of my photo discs and 91% of 2TB of pictures, including the most sentimental ones. At a glance, I believe that some of the other 9% are viable as well. I am so relieved that I received the recommendation to visit Data Tech. They retrieved five eventful years of my life and saved me from a personal meltdown. I hope that I don't need their services again, but now I know where to go if needed and where to refer anyone else who has lost data. The entire staff is amazing. Thank you. read more

I called Data Tech Labs to inquire about recovery services for a hard drive that had failed. I had already attempted preliminary analysis (I'm a hardware/software engineer) including swapping the external PCB between that drive and another just like it (same lot, date code, firmware, consecutive serial numbers). The guy on the phone said that "swapping the board wasn't a good idea" because there were subtlties to the board version that may damage disk contents. I asked him to explain that - what, in swapping the board between drives, might I have done to further damage the data? I thought that was a reasonable question; I'd like to understand what I did, and what might have happened as a result... He said "I'm not going to argue with you" and... hung up!!! Boy was I surprised - that conversation turned south in a heartbeat! Data Tech Labs may be good at drive recovery - but they ain't cheap (he had quoted me between $1000 and $2000 to recover the data), and they certainly aren't professional. Either that guy had just had a fight with his wife, or he's just an asshole - but either way, I wouldn't recommend doing business with Data Tech Labs. If they won't answer questions in pre-sales and actually hang up on potential customers, imagine what might happen if there are problems during the process of data recovery. read more

seriously amazing, one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had! I was half-hysterical thinking I was going to lose all of my data from my time in college and DataTech did a preliminary exam within 24 hours to see if it was possible to recover, and then recovered my data within a week, formatting it on an external hard drive compatible with my new computer. They only charge you if the data retrieval is acceptable, and I received email updates almost every day. I worked with Damen in particular, who was professional and reassuring. read more

Alex, Rickey and team did an incredible job recovering precious family photos from a failing hard drive. Quick, efficient and friendly service. They wanted a meeting. Alex at DataTech wanted a meeting. My HD recovery had gone from $60 at the local shop to $700 at DataTech and I figured, now that they have my data, and they want more money. I was surprised to find out they wanted to have a meeting to review what they had done. While it was a "review the job so we can keep the money call" it was still a great meeting. I actively got to see what I was going to get and they got what they wanted. We used GoToMeeting and there it was, live and in color. Over the internet they walked me though the files they recovered along with files that could not be recovered. I got about 75% back. I was never going to get all of it back. The HD was dropped on a concrete floor from 3' while collecting data. I am happy to have anything. They communicated with me from the day they received the drive till the day it was repaired. I cannot complain. The transition from the local store to them was a bit clunky, but once they had it, the experience changed. The communications was a bit Robo-Form-Letter-esk, but it was communications none the less. I also had a person to call if I was loosing my mind. Loosing data can be heart breaking, nerve wrecking and depressing. Getting it back is better. I cannot wait for my HD to be returned so I can see my pictures again. :-) read more

My external hard drive became very badly damaged and I was unable to retrieve over 9 years worth of pictures, among other documents. I sent it to Datatech because of the great reviews I found online, and also because they are the only company I found that would even look at it and give you a quote for free. Datatech's turn-around time with the quote and recovery were much faster than I could have hoped for. Their professionalism and updates on the recovery were excellent as well. My account manager, Anthony, answered all of my questions promptly and helped in every way he could. I couldn't have been more satisfied or impressed with the services at Datatech. The only reason I did not rate it a 5 is because of the cost, but they are still much more reasonably priced than other companies offering similar services. Then again, how do you put a price on all of your pictures? Thank you for all of your help Anthony! read more

I gave a single star because you can't leave it blank. I was recently approached by (omitted customer name) who previously requested a quote from this company for services in connection with recovery of data. (customer) had asked for a second opinion in recovering information from her external hard drive. She complained the drive she sent had "quit working" for unknown reasons. She also, for reference purposes, provided me a copy of your quote for $1,500 to recover information from the "minor physical failure" afflicted drive. Shame on you, DataTech... I find it disturbingly atrocious that a company would charge her that much for recovery on a drive that has not failed. This company notified my customer that the drive had a "critical failure" and required extensive recovery means. A simple inspection of the drive reflected that no mechanical failures were present, nor was any failure of structure beyond normal repair. In fact, this company removed the drive from its factory enclosure without necessity. My diagnosis of the drive turned out to be that the partition information simply became corrupt and repeated access attempts damaged three sectors of the disk. My recovery of the drive produced satisfactory results and only a loss of less than 1%. My client was charged $250 for a full recovery of her 1tb drive, format segregation and secondary backup. read more

I would kiss these guys if they were local! Our video camera was dropped while recording the birth of our son. I sent the camera in, it wasn't on the hard drive so they sent it back to me, I paid nothing for shipping! Next I sent the mini DVD in and after some back and forth via e-mail they finally let me know they recovered our birth video. Such a priceless memory restored! The only reason I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars is that initially they told me there were only photos on the disk and when they sent me a compressed collage of what was on it, it looked like someone else's vacation pictures. Turns out they had the files mixed up, but in the end we were very satisfied. They are a little pricey, but how can you say no to getting that video back?! So happy with them. One of those times where I hope I never have to do business with them, but I'm glad to know they are there if I need to! read more

Due to a Windows 10 crash I lost my PC data, plus all the data stored on my external backup drive (Western Digital Passport) which was plugged in at the time of the crash. At first I thought WD could fix it. I called them and they had me run a long (almost 24 hours) diagnostic test. Although the test passed, they said I could not recover the data without going to a professional data recovery service. After researching on the internet I found DataTech Labs who were able to recover all of the data from my WD drive. I give DataTech Labs an excellent review for two reasons. First, they communicated with me via email every step of the way. First you set up a case on-line, then you hear back from a case manager based in Denver who advises you of your options going forward. My case was deemed "level 2" and I was given an estimate range. The more refined estimate only comes after you send them your hard drive (although in my case I dropped my drive off at a place in SF, where I live, and they sent it to Sunnyvale). After undergoing technical analysis using their proprietary software they told me they would be able to recover my data. If they can't you are not charged anything. As part of the process I received via email a list of all the files and folders that they would recover. This was very reassuring to me. I also received a detailed invoice for about $750.00 which I approved. Part of that amount covered the new 500 GB external drive which I would receive once the recovery was done. My second reason for giving DatTech Labs an outstanding review was their professionalism and expertise in doing the recovery. To my surprise, I was not able to access the recovered data on the new hard drive which they sent me via signature-required delivery service. I emailed the case manager again. He wrote back saying it was not certain what the problem was, but that I could either send the drive back or in my case, since Sunnyvale is close to San Francisco, I could bring in my drive to talk with the recovery engineer personally. When I did that, he quickly determined that the problem was that I was using a bad USB 3.0 cable which, even though it was new, was not transmitting the data. He gave me a new cable and at my request transferred one of the files onto the Windows 10 laptop I had brought. I did this in order to verify that the problem was not due to Windows 10. The file transferred perfectly, thereby ruling out another Windows 10 problem. Overall, DataTech treated me as a respected individual customer, giving me personal attention when needed. They truly deserve this outstanding review. read more

The thing that I liked most about them compared to most business is that they were very fair. I unfortunately couldn't give 5 stars because ultimately, they weren't able to recover any of my data; however, I did end up buying a new hard drive from them, which they installed. My laptop's hard drive got fried and I took it to them for data recovery, with some questions (as I was already not happy with the answers Best Buy gave). They were very clear and upfront about everything, including prices. They made it clear that if data recovery failed, I would not be charged anything. They made it clear that if I only got part of my data back (and I specified what it was I was looking for in advance), I would not be charged. Unfortunately, my hard drive ended up being too fried to be recoverable, which is probably understandable. When they offered me a quote for a new one (which was a fair price), they said that it would come with a 3 month warranty and that if something else ended up being wrong with my laptop other than the hard drive, I could return the hard drive free of charge (or choose to get the rest of the laptop fixed). Clearly, this is a business that's just looking for loyal customers and not looking to rip you off (unlike Best Buy, who charges you $150 for the 50% chance that you "might" get your data recovered, and you won't get your money back if you don't- what a joke). Great customer service, by the way. read more

They probably CAN do data recovery, but there is definitely no reason that you should go to them rather than a legitimate, well-established company such as Ontrack. A month ago I took my fried drives to them since they're local, I live in Westminster. The lady upfront immediately denied any coupons and referral discounts that I had (WD 10% discount). Then said oh since I brought in two drives, then the evaluation fee will go from 0$ to 100$ per drive. Since I drove 50 min to get there, I left my drives for them to evaluate despite the sudden costs. Next morning they emailed me the quote, which was $4000. I was shocked at the price and called them wanting to know what exactly was broken with the drives to warrant the highest-ended repair fees. Eventually (7hrs later) I talked to an 'engineer' with a strange accent and broken English, he told me some generic BS about why and how drives break and that I should just trust them to repair my drives, like I don't know anything about computers. It's almost like Geek Squad telling grandma why you need to plugin the power cord for the PC to turn on. Immediately, this looked fishy, so I took my drives back. Then I sent my drives to Ontrack, which is an actual data recovery corporation, not a dingy hole-in-the-wall company like datatech labs (or in fact, 98% of the DR companies you'll come across). Ontrack gives you free overnight inbound shipping; I sent my drives to them, evaluation immediately began and I could see what they're doing with their online job tracker. A week later they gave me a list of recoverable files, without even asking me for my credit card #!. Now THAT is an evaluation! The final price came out to be $1300 total! I was in fact shocked with this price as well! As I originally expected that a premium DR company such as Ontrack would be charging the most! I am more than pleased with the professional service of Ontrack. To Datatech labs, I know you guys gotta make money, but try making it legitmately. Don't rip off your local customers. Most people probably just went to you and went ahead with the data recovery, and then file it off as a money-costing bitter experience, but once in a while a smart person like me comes along, and totally exposes you to the public. read more

Don't even bother. I'm a video producer who specializes in wedding videography. After shooting a wedding, my memory card with the HD footage on it went corrupt. I brought it to a local computer store who sent it to Datatech, along with a specific list of instructions on how to recover the files and what formats they could be converted to for easiest recovery. First, I got a phone call saying my data was recovered and while in an online meeting where they could show me their work, my instructions had been completely ignored. There were no video files recovered; just grossly oversized JPEG files with no rhyme or reason. I told the tech on the phone they had a sheet of paper full of instructions they obviously hadn't read, so he said they'd go back to work. The next time I got a call for an online meeting, I was shown a couple of working video clips. Yay, my stuff is all there! Right? Wrong. I was charged an obscene amount of money for an external hard drive (almost $100 for a 160 GB external when I could spend that much now and get a 1.5 TB), then double-billed (which is illegal) an extra $40, which it took me numerous emails and phone calls to get reversed. Then I get the hard drive with my "recovered data." It wouldn't stay mounted to my computer. I finally managed to move the data over so I could look at it, and out of 150 video files, only 12 actually worked. Of the rest of the recovered files, they were badly pixelated replicas of the first 12. They hadn't checked their work or done anything they said they would. So I figured, maybe this is all they could do. Maybe the card was so corrupted that this is the best I would get. But just in case, I downloaded my own recovery software and attempted a recovery myself on the original card. And guess what? I RECOVERED ALL 150 VIDEO FILES MYSELF, FLAWLESSLY! Now I was writing for a refund. Guess what? I'm still waiting for an answer. Three weeks went by. Two emails were blatantly ignored by the staff (names are Andre Deaguero and Stephan Smith) and now phone call after phone call is met with the same opposition. Today, the jerk on the phone hung up on me when asked for his name. So yes, they don't do what they're asked to do, double bill you, then ignore any customer inquiries that may disrupt their cash flow. F this place. read more

I am a professional photographer but I was totally new to all this when I lost some images on one of my hard drives. An entire weeks worth of shooting... I dropped it off with DataTech and received a call the next day from Ricky saying they thought they had found my files and could recover them for $1500 dollars. Having no experience in this racket, I was shocked by the price and said so. Ricky said if it went well it could be as low as $1000. I admitted I didn't have that kind of money and would have to find a way to do it cheaper on my own. He said he had the authority to give me a discount and suddenly I almost felt as if it was a hostage negotiation. I told Ricky no thank you and said I would pick up the drive the following day. The next day I picked up my drive and brought it home. Previously it had seemed to be working fine, I was simply looking for files that had accidentally been deleted or lost to corruption. This was not a mechanical problem, simply bad file management on my part and an accidental disconnect at worst. When I got the 2TB drive home my computer (mac/snow leopard) no longer recognized the drive at all. So now I had lost nearly another 1 TB of additional data. I called Data-tech and asked to speak to Mike about my drive. No call back. I called back again and talked to Ricky. He said that their work should have left no fingerprint on my drive and referred me back to Mike and said he would have him call me. Ricky also mentioned that he was "very, very good at his job." Several days now and no call back from Mike at Data-tech. There you have it. Do yourself a favor and check out the file recovery software available on the internet for $99. It worked great and I have used it to recover all my files, including the original lost files which actually turned out to be on a different drive than the one data-tech ruined. Then I used the same software to recover the files that data-tech made unavailable to me ( by ruining my drive) and then couldn't be bothered to call me back about. read more

A few years ago, my hard drive crashed and Geek Squad was unable to recover the data. They told me they would send it out for an unreasonable cost and even said there would be additional fees associated with the recovery. They even said not to get my hopes up because the likelihood of them retrieving the data would be slim. I was crushed! A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across DataTech Labs while browsing Google. I decided to give them a try. What's the worst that could happen? I shipped my hard drive, as soon as they received it, I was emailed and informed that they received it. By the next morning, I was contacted and told about what they found during their diagnostics. They told me the worst case scenario plan, their intended plan, and the pricing that went along with each step. I gave them permission to proceed. Along the way, I received contact communication about what they were doing and the status of each step. After 3 days, I received a phone call that brought me to tears; they had successfully restored all my data and would be sending me an external hard drive with my data on it. This news was the best news I have had in a while. The staff is so friendly and respectful. The communication was on point. And clearly they were successful. I would highly recommend DataTech Labs to anyone looking for data recovery! read more

I was in a serious need for a company like this one. I decided on DataTech because according to google they had a local facility and an emergency call number to meet my needs. I was informed the following day (having called back after I'd left a message on the emergency number the prior evening) and was asked to bring in the my media (Hard drive making "clicking" noises and not booting). I handed off the drive (transported it in anti-static bag and in a box for safety reasons - I used to build computers and do IT for law firms) and they ran their diagnostics. I was then informed that the drive needed to be shipped off to Colorado for any recovery efforts. I wasn't too comfortable with that, but desperately needed that data, so I agreed. I was given email updates which I appreciated immensely. Days later I was contacted by Anthony Ross who allowed my to remotely connect in and see my data - at that time I couldn't have been happier! It was such a huge relief and I felt the money was well spent. I arranged and paid for expedited shipping. I was out of town on a business related trip when the recovered media arrived, but my wife brought the package in and sat it on my home office desk. When I returned I opened the package and connected it to my computer via the provided USB cable and was excited to be able to get my data. The drive was accessible and I got to see the file folders as anthony had shown me previously - but that's when things went horrible wrong! Immediately I began receiving "Delayed write failure - Mf$ file could not be safed find another location" messages and then NOTHING! The system seemed to just freeze! I waited over an hour and then rebooted the system. Now I can only see the file directories because when I open the folders there is nothing there! I immediately contacted DataTech Labs and explained the problem. I was told I needed to contact Western Digital because it "sounds like" the drive I have failed and it's a warranty issue. I asked if I could simply send this one back and have then transfer the data to another drive, they said no but that if the data is still in their system I could pay for another drive and shipping. I felt that this was ludicrous but felt I had other option. I again arranged for expedited shipping (2 day air) and awaited the new, replacement drive (I paid the invoice on the tuesday following Memorial day 2015). When the drive hadn't arrived by the following week I contacted the company. I was told by Ricky P. that somehow the "ball was dropped" due to the holidays but they'd send it right out. I received the an email update and noticed the drive was shipped ground - despite the fact that I paid for 2 day air. I called again and Ricky P. told me that I'd get a refund of the difference (more about that later). I eagerly opened the package and connected the drive - I was in good shape! The data was accessible and no "delayed write" errors. HOWEVER, not all the data was there - approximately 30GB of 76GB of data was missing. I called, left Ricky messages and was then finally told that he was on vacation. I called once he returned and left messages on Monday, Tuesday and then Thursday I finally reached him (yes, he didn't bother returning a single call if only to say I have received your messages and will look into this). He said he would contact the Dallas facility and see if they still had the information. A week went by and I hadn't heard anything and called Ricky and told he was told on first look that they didn't have the data but he'd reach out again to verify. Today, July 31, 2015 almost 10 days later I phone because again I was not called and was told - unfortunately your data is no longer with us. Granted I have received approximately 46GB of data - that's HUGE! However, this data isn't essential and isn't worth the $3000 I paid nor would I have for it. The critical information for which I shelled out the coin was the other 30GB of files. The customer service beneath the surface isn't great and there's no ownership of that - not even a hint of a partial refund. Oh, speaking of refund I had to call in two more times before that even was processed. On the last of these Ricky indicated that we'd spoke previously about it and that he'd get right on it, saying "I think it's like $2 dollars difference". I replied, "it's only $2 dollars?" and then he said "no, it's more like $38". I don't know that I would recommend them in the future - seems once they have the funds the level of customer service tanks. read more

Rickey took care of us--we were able to recover our data and they did it much quicker than the time we had been quoted, which was a nice surprise. We are so glad that we will be able to recover our documents and especially our pictures! And we really appreciate the speed with which they did it! read more

Amazing! I was devastated that photos of my dog that I had for 17 years might be gone. These guys were able to recover photos while giving me the most amazing customer service. I am so appreciative! Thanks to Ricky and his team of Engineers! read more

I almost never write these reviews, but I had speedy service from a staffer who not only handled my recovery job on an old phone, but really went the extra mile when I ran into problems. These people care about customer satisfaction. We got some family photos saved thanks to these guys. read more

This is a great place with professional staff. I was shopping my crashed drive around and I got some pretty far out quotes. When I took it to Data Tech they did it for half of what the other data recovery places were going to charge. I highly recommend these guys. Very nice and very good at recovering data. read more

Called listed number and received a quote for recovering a failed hard drive at $500-$700 range. I discussed dropping off a new hard drive with it for transferring the complete contents, including the Operating System. After dropping it off, the quote changed to $1300. Reluctantly letting this pass and arguing it down to $1,200, I was notified that "everything went great" and I could come pick it up. Upon arriving, I asked to review files, which did not recover properly. Several days later, I came back a second time, assured that everything copied successfully. I was also told that the OS was not installed, and that someone else would have to do that on another drive. I was referred to Microcenter nearby and that Datatech was "pulling some strings" to get me a good deal. Recall that the original quote of $500-$700 included doing this already. Two weeks, a third visit to the area, and $300 later, About 1 in 15 files was recovered on the drive I finally had access to. I notified Datatech again. Rickey at Datatech said the engineer told him a different story about the files all being recovered and the engineer was now backtracking on his statements. You have to love it when a company starts pointing fingers internally at each other when a customer service issue comes up. Rickey said he sent the drive to a different engineer. A week later the file contents are once again ready for pickup. A look at the portable HD (they did provide this at no charge, despite telling me they originally couldn't do this and hence why I had to spend $300 at Microcenter) showed that more than half of the files are still not functional. So after 6 to 7 hours in traffic going to and from here FOUR times, and a final bill of $1,000 higher than originally promised, I still do not have half of what was promised. My hard drive died and I was referred to Data Tech Labs. When I went in I was told that if they were not able to retrieve my information I would not be charged. I was most interested in my financial data, my quicken files, then my photos. When I picked up the hard drive and external disc I was told that it was a great recovery and all information was obtained. Wrong. I was not able to find any quicken files. The photos were there. I did take it back in and to see if they would try for my quicken files, which they did. I was told there were no quicken files on the hard disc. I was charged over $1000.00 and was given a credit of only $100.00. I got my photos, however they did not retrieve my contacts, word processing files, or quicken files. I have spent the last two weeks restoring my financials for the last year. I will back up all files from this day forward. This was a very expensive lesson. I do feel I was cheated since I was told if the information was not retrieved I would not be charged and the quicken files were the most important. K. Wheeler read more
