Big isn't always better, but the giant BIG DAT was totally worth the trip. It was actually HOT when we got it - moist, yeasty and flavorful - with this oily crispiness on the bottom. I'm still thinking about it 36 hours later. The blueberry cake was also good, but the custard filled had a flavor I didn't quite like. There are no labels on the doughnuts, and the staff, while efficient aren't exactly friendly or welcoming, so you just have to point at which one you want, or secretly know the name, I guess. It is quite a journey down there to the South Side, but I will be back to try the apple fritters and maybe the "donut balls." read more

I visited this place on Sunday at 2:30 pm on 8-20-2017 when I arrived inside, they had a few Glazed Buttermilk Donuts left and that was all.(Really at 2:30 pm) when this place is supposed to close at 5:00 pm. I'm from the far south side and to travel that far for a disappointment was shocking. I'll just stick to Old Fashion Donuts on 11200 So. Michigan at least they do have donuts till closing. read more

Went to Dat Donuts yesterday evening and ordered a dozen donuts. I chose the donuts I wanted but when I got home I only had 10 donuts. I paid for a dozen but 2 were not there. It was probably because a group of people came in the store and the person waiting on me got distracted. the box was taped closed so I did not open it until I got home. Ok I have to admit, I was highly skeptical about this place (Dat Donuts). One night my girlfriend and I drove eight miles, and finally arrived at Dat Donuts. As we approached the entrance we are greeted by a customer I'm presuming, dressed in all black wearing sorta of a matador hat, resembling Lee Van Cleef from, "the good the bad and the ugly." Who simply asks us in a raspy voice and stern look "y'all alright?", we replied "hello, just fine sir". We continued on in and started to browse the small unmarked selection they had at the time in a case just below the bullet proof glass. No more than a minute goes by, and we are greeted by another mischievous fellow. Who explains to us that he was on house arrest, and his p.o made it very clear to him that he must be back at his shelter by 3:00a.m or else he would be going to jail, it was 3:55am. He then asked us for a ride, which is when the cashier immediately stepped in and said to him, "you know you can't do that right?" the man started to cry and complain as we finalized our order. As we are leaving a kind young man holds open the door for us. I thank him, and he asked me for a quarter, I said, "I'm sorry, I don't have any change." he then says to me, "a dime! a nickel! a penny! anything c'mon man I did the thing for you, I held the door open!"...Onward with the night, Got home, and tried my first donut which was the a chocolate frosted with sprinkles. I have to say, I am glad I didn't go to the "Dunkin Donuts" across the street. This donut was fresh, flavorful, and the textures were just right. It had a very unique flavor that stood out in comparison to "Dunkin Donuts" or any other place that I have tried recently for that matter. I grabbed a dozen of donuts, and there was not one disappointing donut in the bunch. If I do return, I will make sure to scope out the front door first, to make sure the coast is clear. read more

Dat Donut makes a drive to the south side for work a-ok with me. They are open 24 hours. I love that. You have to get your donuts through bulletproof glass. I love that. They have amazing yeast donuts and about 20 other flavors like coconut, strawberry, maple, chocolate, the list goes on and on. I REALLY love that! They are cheap! I brought back a half dozen for my office and I think it set me back less than 5 dollars. And for six enormous, creative, fresh and delicious donuts that is a killer deal. I have many friends in the city that will make the drive down there just for the donuts. I haven't gotten to that level yet; if I have an excuse to be on the south side then I'll make an excuse to end up here... but I won't say its out of the realm of possibility. So get your donut loving self down there! The city places only have a leg up on DD in that they have more "interesting" and "creative" donuts... but if you're the kind of person that will happily enjoy a perfect yeast donut as much as you'll enjoy some fancy creme-brulee filled maple donut with bacon flecks and gold dust, this is your place! read more

I just came back from this place. I bought two dozen donuts, a dozen donut holes, and 2 big dats. As such, I feel very comfortable saying that I'm familiar with the things Dat Donut has to offer. At the end of the day, it really is just a donut and how good a donut is ever going to be is sort of in a more limited range than say, a hamburger, but these donuts are really great. The yeast ones are soft and doughy, with a good chew, and the cake donuts avoid the usual flaw of being overly dry. They're really very moist. They're quality donuts, but not as surprising or novel as places like NYC's Doughnut Plant (which I think goes a little too far in creating novelty doughnuts). EXCEPT FOR THE BIG DAT. A giant doughnut that actually eclipses my head is pretty exciting. I recommend the big dat (for novelty) and the chocolate cake donut. I don't like the blueberry very much, but that's probably just me. All the yeast ones are very good. My friend also got a breakfast croissant sandwich and said it was pretty good, so those are probably also a decent choice if you're feeling like something savory, but I honestly don't know why you wouldn't get a donut... read more

So my aunt kept telling me to try this place called DAT DONUT because of the size of the donut. Well, I decided to try it as I was staying on the south side of Chicago and it was not too far from my aunt's place. Well, parking here is a beast BUT we finally made it inside and yes, the donuts are HUGE. Well, the girl behind the counter WAS NOT happy to be working there and she had a really skanky attitude but for some reason I found her amusing. Her attitude was soooo bad and blatant, like, "I hate this job. I hate donuts. I hate life", type of attitude, that I busted out laughing in her face, which pissed her off even more. I could not get mad because it was toooo funny. She caught me on the right day, in the right mood cause this chick was NOT HAPPY to be working at DAT DONUT. But attitude aside, DAT DONUT I ate was soooo freaking good. Like awesomely good. Well July 25, 2013 was the first I'd tried DAT Donut. It was an excellent donut. Early in the AM on July 27, 2013 I decided to drive over to DAT Donut. BIG NEON SIGN reading OPEN 24 HOURS... Go into the store to get some glaze donuts (any size). I was told there were none and that she was closing the store. Now this is why I don't like Black Businesses. You promise one thing, however, delivery of your product is a whole other issue. First of all its OK if you are not 24 hrs. However REMEMBER NOT TO use a Huge Neon Sign stating one thing when in fact its another. I found this to be very disappointing once again. We can't do anything professionally. We want a business, but I'd be damn if we conduct the operation as such. Now I need to find another Donut shop, and hopefully it lives up to its advertisement. Good Donut. well, it was 7:30 in the morning. since it was winter, the sun was barely out and the sky was still a dull blue gray hue. i wouldn't expect that to have anything to do with the quality of donuts, though. I'd like to assume that the donuts would be fresh first thing in the morning but i understand that being a 24 hour establishment, there is now such thing as first thing in the morning. I absolutely love their glazed donuts! Soft, fluffy, sugary glaze, it's so addicting, I can eat two in one sitting, and then want one of their crunchy on the outside, soft and sweet on the inside, old fashioned donuts! love that Dat Donut is at the 95th street cta el station, it's the perfect location for them! one thing though is that they need more space, it's gets crowded after 5 people try to squeeze inside, and it is a side single file line, 2 donuts and a coffee is $3.49, and it's worth it! The ladies that own it Have a good product, but they need to sell a mug so that regulars can be in and out, instead of having everyone always order a reg coffee, I know I would buy one, they also sell a super size glazed donut and it is enough for at least 4 people!
