So, in my last review a year ago, I very specifically said we weren't going back... But then my family from California came to town, and after seeing our pictures with the giant donut they demanded we go. This time we drove instead of public transit. The donuts are still fantastic! We took a whole new set of pictures, which my aunts posted on Facebook and were very happy with how goofy/awesome those pics are. My aunt was surprised they were good, saying that when something is a novelty in size, etc. she expects to eat it because it's a novelty, not because it's actually great. But everyone agrees these are fantastic donuts. The six of us polished off 4 Dat Big Ones and one apple fritter. Well, 3 1/2 Dat Big Ones. And again we were way too full to grab lunch after that, even though we all agreed that rib place next door smelled really good. So I retract my statement that we'll never go again. But driving is way better than the public transit down there, and I'd still be selective about when you go. read more

Dat Donut Didn't Do-it for me. I only tried/purchased a .97 glazed and it was a tad tOO dOughy and sweet for my liking. I'm not ruling out eating another though, if I happened to be in the area, I might stop by to get a Dat....but, I wouldn't go out of my way to get w/Dat, nope. I'm sticking w/Dunk (not Dunkin). Fresh - delicious and I wish they had a fat free,sugar free no calorie donuts. It is worth the sacrifice of my cheat day ! I usually get 1/2 a dozen or a dozen so that I can share so that I don't feel like I'am the only one that is eating these delish treats. How could not love a donut place that's open 24 hours!! I've been coming here since I was kid and to me nothing has changed. The pineapple and strawberry donuts are the best. The customer service can be kinda bad . But you will def get over it that's how EXCELLENT the donuts are . You would think they would be happy selling the most delicious donuts ever. I was doing a flu shot clinic around the corner, and saw this place. All I can say about this place is wow! The old fashioned is like krispy kreme but a lot better. I first saw this in a Thrillest article, and once I saw a picture of the huge donut, I knew I just had to go here. My friends and I headed over to the Chatham neighborhood at around 11:30 on a Friday night. Were we concerned? Yes. Were we hoping nothing that we were gonna make it in and out safely? Yes. We got to the corner of 83rd and Cottage Grove just fine. It's a well lit place, and there was a CPD parked in the vicinity of the shop. We all went down the car and headed. I love how they use a revolving window to give you your donuts! The woman handling the sales was really nice, and I wouldn't doubt if she was wondering why, at that time of the night, came in to buy donuts. Although there was the Big Dat, they had several kinds of the regular sized treats. I got the glazed yeast, glazed butter milk, chocolate glazed, toasted coconut, and strawberry. I also got a bow tie, with is pretty much the same thing as a glazed yeast but the dough was shaped into a fancy looking bow. These doughnuts are DELICIOUS. Not sure how long they've been out at that moment, but they were nice and soft, yum. I wouldn't mind going down here again, to be honest! read more

Dat has one of the best cake doughnuts I've ever had. I tried 5 doughnuts in total and most were exactly what I ordered. Their old fashion tasted way off. Dat Donut reminds me of Old Fashioned Donuts in the Roseland community further south. Another south side Chicago staple... its late hours makes Dat Donut the perfect go-to spot after a night out with friends. I recommend trying the glazed Texas or Apple Fritter donuts... they're filling & budget conscious. Although the parking lot is small, it works as customers are constantly in & out with limited wait times as they're donuts are made freshly throughout the day. I say, once you leave Dat Donut, go grab you a rib tip combo from Uncle Johns next door and some Garrett's popcorn from down the street & you're good to go! read more

I judge a donut shop by the quality of the simple glazed donut. When I tell you this donut melts in your mouth believe it! On my fat days I make a special trip to Dat Donut and pray that everything isn't sold out. I don't know why this isn't a franchise and why there isn't one located downtown Chicago. They also do this large donut that is wonderful. It also comes in Chocolate. The cake donuts are second to none. My one problem with Dat Donut is a gift and a curse and that is accessibility! The best donut's I have ever had. This place is better than Krispy Kreme. I say this because several of Krispy Kreme's donuts are too sweet. The chocolate, caramel and vanilla with sprinkles are literally an assault on the taste buds in my opinion. Dat Donut however is damn near perfect. Each bite is scrumptious. My favorites are lemon cake, vanilla cake, blueberry and pineapple. Each pastry is hand made from scratch and is guaranteed to touch the very bottom of your heart. I know that's uber sappy but this place is a Chicago favorite and deserves the praise. A word of caution, the donuts are only made a few times a day so if you get a donut that's been hanging around pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds and enjoy. The only reason this place did not receive five stars is because the staff is matrix bullet time slow, seriously hurry up with dat donut! read more
