These are the best donuts. I don't even like donuts and I love Dat's donuts. Why has no one mentioned the lemon cake donut? Not sure if this is even its real name, normally I just point and they get me. One time I had a fresh lemon one that was still piping hot and I died and went to heaven. We tried this place after having it highly recommended by a couple of people. It's small and simple, and the neighborhood isn't the greatest (as others have noted), but the donuts are fantastic. The cake donuts in particular are good, with a deliciously buttery taste and a nice, slight crunch to them that's different from what I've had most other places. Where have you been all my life??? I have passed by this spot for years and never stopped by. There is a rib joint adjacent to this place and that was my original destination. As I wanted for the ribs, I walked over to this store. THEY SELL HUGE DONUTS. Only glaze, but it was as big as my head (not reallly, my head is humagous, but I enjoy using hyperbole). The donuts remind me of Mississippi homemade donut. If you're never tried a MS donut or you are missing that goodness check out this spot You will never want another DD donut again. My grandson and I were there on Sunday and ordered 4 steak sandwiches and 2 pina colada drinks. They were only able to make 2 sandwiches and they were the worst I've ever tasted and the drinks (2 that cost $12) were just as bad! I ended up throwing it all away!! A total waste of money! This was my first time visiting and i was so annoyed by the unpleasant experience that I just left without purchasing anything. I walked in and stood in a line for 10 minutes before I actually realized that there was no line. People just stand around wherever. And they're open 24hrs. Every sleepless night when the hours seem small, and my mind rushes through the limited possibilities, this place always comes up. But mind the 10PM-4AM closing on Sundays--I just got nailed with that heartbreak this weekend. If you do find yourself in a similar situation, check out Captain Hook's Fish & Chicken down in the shopping plaza at 85th. We made the trek after this was featured in the Yelp roundup of good donuts. A straight shot down Cottage Grove from where we live. Don't fear the South Side, white yuppie yelpers, and it will love you back. Or, it will serve you a delicious donut anyway. Hop in your car- they have a parking lot. Anyway, the strawberry frosted had actual strawberry pieces mixed into the icing. My caramel frosted was delicious. My husband had two 'Boston creme' donuts, which had yummy vanilla pudding inside. These were definitely good donuts, and though the counter girl missed that I'd also ordered coffee, we were happy we'd made the trek. I wish I'd gotten to try them warm, as that's the only reason I ever enjoyed Krispy Kreme (mmm hot glazed donut off the belt). Room temp, they were a few steps above Dunkin Donuts. I don't know that I'd ever attempt to try a Big Dat, unless I was bringing it to a party for fun (with a knife and fork). Then again, this is probably the first time I've had donuts in 2 years. Donut seeker beware - don't let your excitement at a 24 hour a day donut place trick you into believing it is also open 7 days a week. Ever since this donut place was featured in the yelp round-up its been on my list of places to try. Finally, Sunday at 2:30am we decide to make the trek from downtown to the south side. I'm not completely dense, so we called and asked if they were open. The response: "Today only til 4." Mistakenly, we assumed they were open til 4. Wrong...closed til 4. We missed the window by 1hr and 15 mins. Our mouths hurt from disappointment on the drive home. We went back the next day. Definitely worth the wait! We arrived in time to enjoy some freshly made warm donuts and the manager/owner was sweet enough to let us sample a donut for free. We ordered 6 - 2 plain glazed, lemon cake, coconut frosted, chocolate, and a Boston cream. The plain glazed melted in your mouth. Heavenly! Gone in just a couple bites. The frosted cake donuts were delicious and even better with a latte the next morning. By far the highlight of the donut adventure was the Boston Cream. Never a fan of cream filled centers, I tend to avoid these. But this one was exceptional. Chocolate covered, just heavy and dense enough and the cream was a perfect consistency and flavor to compliment the dough with each bite. My friend, a self-proclaimed Boston cream expert, asserted it was the best he'd ever had. If i could find a way to make them calorie free, I'd make the trip out daily! read more

Best donuts I've ever had in my life. My friend promised to bring me a donut as big as my head to the finish line of the marathon. He delivered. To my surprise, it really was as big as my head. I-ate-it-all If you've ever seen this donut, you would understand what a feat it was to eat the whole thing. You almost need to run 26.2 miles to justify it. It's ridiculous and it's also my new favorite post-marathon treat. My friend who meets me at the finish every year has started a new tradition. AWESOME! I got one strawberry frosted and a whole BIG DAT donut to myself. Very tasty and incredibly fresh(especially considering I went at 2pm) The donuts taste homemade and are delicious. When i got there I second guessed getting the fabled 'Big Dat' donut because they looked kinda stale. But what the hell, I figured I went there for the experience and the novelty of eating a donut the size of a dinner plate. The Big Dat was amazingly fresh and the glaze was even slightly still wet! The key difference I think, was that they used a ton of crisco shortening which creates a softer, more buttery, donut. Definitely the place to go if u have a craving for sweets!
