Currently I think of Pawtucket as "the place where Slater Mill and the DMV and Kafe Lila and Machines With Magnets are," but if I spend enough time at KL and MWM, my view will undoubtedly become more nuanced. Machines With Magnets is a recording studio, art gallery, and performance space that has fast become my favorite music venue and possibly one of my favorite places in Rhode Island. The inside is beautiful, with two large rooms decked out in cool white paint and beautiful hardwood flooring (one floor is stenciled with an absolutely stunning pattern). Art of varied quality adorns the walls. I have now had the pleasure of attending two shows here--an electronic music performance and Quintron + Miss Pussycat--and I enjoyed them both. Watching bands perform with art as a backdrop is a pleasure. The sound is good and the venue is run fairly efficiently. At the latter show, they quickly cycled through four bands by alternating the rooms in which each band performed. Very smart. The crowds are fun and interesting. Drinks, Dunkin' Donuts coffee, and even pizza are sold for reasonable prices. During my first visit, a friend turned to me and said, "I wish I lived here." "I wish I could DJ here," I replied. Until either of these things happens, I'll be stopping in periodically for more music and art. You should, too.

The bartender barely made eye contact, and when I ordered a spicy tequila soda, I was served with Tajín sprinkled on top--not exactly what I'd expect for a spicy drink. The food was equally underwhelming. The pepperoni pizza came out with the pepperoni completely burnt. When we mentioned it, we were told that's simply how they prepare it, so keep that in mind if you order pizza here. The wings were decent and had a good amount of meat on them, but that was about the only highlight. The nachos arrived swimming in grease, making them difficult to enjoy, and the toppings were just average. The French fries were another issue--they appeared to have been cooked in the same fryer as seafood. This wasn't disclosed, and the fries came out tasting noticeably fishy. Thankfully, I don't have a seafood allergy, but that could be a serious concern for someone who does. The ambiance was fine, but overall the food and service left a lot to be desired, and I wouldn't go out of my way to return.

Somehow, despite having lived here for years and spending plenty of time around downtown…read moreProvidence, I had never been to The Eddy. I'm honestly not sure how I missed it, because this is exactly the kind of place I like finding. It is the true definition of a small cocktail bar. The space is tiny, intimate, and has a very specific atmosphere, so if you're looking for a big place with plenty of tables, this probably isn't it. If you're looking for a great cocktail in a cozy little bar, however, you're in the right place. The cocktail menu is excellent. There are a lot of creative options that go well beyond the standard collection of Old Fashioneds, Margaritas, and Martinis you'll find at most bars. The drinks are imaginative without becoming gimmicky, and the combinations we tried were really well balanced and interesting. You can tell there is some serious thought behind the cocktail program, and it makes ordering something new a lot of fun. Our waitress was fantastic as well. My wife ordered a drink that apparently isn't something every bartender is familiar with, so our waitress went back to the bartender to ask about it. The bartender immediately knew exactly what she was talking about, which was a nice little reminder that these people actually know their drinks. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience easy without hovering over us. The music deserves a mention, too. It was fantastic and fit the atmosphere perfectly. The Eddy has that comfortable, slightly dark cocktail-bar feeling where you can sit down, have a drink, listen to good music, and actually enjoy being there rather than feeling like you're sitting in a loud restaurant waiting for someone to bring you your check. My only real warning is that this place is genuinely small. That is part of its charm, but it also means getting in and finding a seat can be difficult at times, particularly when it's busy. You probably shouldn't show up with a large group expecting to immediately find a table. For two people looking for a couple of really good cocktails, though, it's pretty much ideal. The prices are also quite reasonable for the quality of the drinks. You're obviously paying cocktail-bar prices rather than dive-bar prices, but I didn't feel like we were being taken advantage of. Considering the creativity and quality of what we were drinking, I thought the prices were perfectly fair. I'm actually a little annoyed that I went this long without knowing The Eddy existed. Providence has so many cocktail bars that you can spend years here and still keep discovering places you've somehow walked past a hundred times. The Eddy is definitely going on the list of places we need to come back to, and we will 100% be back.

We were doing one of our usual…read morebrewery and cocktail crawls around Providence this past weekend and had planned on stopping at Bayberry, but apparently every time we tried to go there they had a wedding and weren't open to the public. So, Plan B it was, and honestly, I'm glad we ended up here. Yellow Door has a really fun atmosphere. The playlist was lively, the place gradually filled up while we were there, and the whole space has a vibrant, welcoming feel without becoming obnoxiously loud or chaotic. It's very aesthetically pleasing, with a colorful, modern look that fits the whole taco-bar concept perfectly. It feels like somewhere you could drop in for a couple of drinks and tacos with friends and just hang out for the evening. Our bartender was really nice and attentive, and the cocktails were probably the highlight of the visit for me. The drink menu is extensive, and there are plenty of interesting options rather than the usual handful of margaritas and beer. Everything we had was well balanced and well made. Providence has been having something of a cocktail renaissance lately, and Yellow Door fits right into that trend. The food was good, although I have to be honest about the birria taco we tried. It was tasty, but it wasn't exactly a life-changing taco, and it was on the small side for the price. I was expecting something that would make me immediately understand why everyone gets so excited about birria, and this one didn't quite get there. That said, "good but not mind-blowing" is still good, and I'm not going to knock an entire restaurant because one taco didn't knock my socks off. We only tried a small portion of the menu, so there's plenty more to explore. That's actually one of the reasons we'll be back. I want to try some of the other food, and I'd like to come on a different night to see how the atmosphere feels when we're not in the middle of a weekend crawl. Sometimes a place hits differently when you actually sit down, order a few things and give the menu a proper chance rather than treating it as one stop on a larger evening. Overall, Yellow Door Taqueria is a very solid four stars. The atmosphere is fun, the space is attractive, the bartenders are friendly, and the cocktails are genuinely good. The food we tried was good, although the birria taco didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Still, there's enough here that I'm interested in coming back and trying more, which is ultimately a pretty good endorsement. Sometimes Plan B turns out to be worth keeping on the list.

This Restaurant is apart of the Aloft Hotel in Providence, which I have stayed at and enjoyed doing…read moreso. With that, I hoped to have a similar experience in their restaurant, but unfortunately, that was not the case. Also, please read my review with consideration of the fact that I, myself, worked as a server for over a year and am pursuing a degree in hospitality management. I am not a customer looking to complain and am a guest who seeks good experiences and would love to share them with others. Restaurant was not busy, still waited 10 minutes to be served after I was seated. I didn't get up to leave because I wanted to give this place a fair chance and no other restaurant nearby appealed to me. My server was very direct and to the point, no "thank you for your patience" or "how are you today?" Just straight to "what can I get for you". It felt like I was an inconvenience to her time, not a noticed guest whose business is appreciated. My water ran out and my server quickly placed a jar of water on my table as she passed by, with no comment. Again, made me feel like an inconvenience to her time, not a guest worth speaking to. My elote was served on the cob, I asked for it off but its fine, I know how to cut corn and it was plated beautifully and tastes delicious. I think more of a cream would be good on it but it was good elote nonetheless. My two small birria tacos took 30 minutes to be served. I had my elote to munch on, however 30 minutes felt a little long for a simple, two tacos. When they arrived, my server said more to me and told me to enjoy them, which was appreciated in comparison to no comment to me. The tacos were amazing despite their size and wait time, and my server kindly checked in on me after a few minutes of them being served. I did, however, Overhear my server say "sorry for the wait" to the table behind me of two women, which makes me think I was being overlooked because I was a lone diner as opposed to a party of some amount. When I was done with my food my server kindly offered me a box and prebussed the table. The music was played at a respectable volume and the lighting was adequate, not too dark and not too bright. The restaurant also allows for a lot of natural light which is very nice. Both the elote and tacos were $12, leaving my total after taxes and a credit card upcharge at $26.64. I expected to have a great experience and be able to leave at least a 20% tip as I always do, but unfortunately the service I received equated to that not being the case, and I unfortunately had to leave a little downwards of 16% instead. Overall, I would eat here again, but I think I would have to bring a party of at least two other people to get the proper attention to the table. I'm not sure if I would recommend this restaurant for other people to try as there are many other Mexican restaurants in the area that I have yet to try that may be worth more recognition. However, until I do try them, I would definitely say this place is an adequate restaurant to eat at, but probably only if you're staying at the Aloft and don't want to walk too far.

We started with some drinks - I customized one of their cocktail options to change the liquor and it was delicious! We wanted to try one thing from each section of the menu. We started with the beets which were light and citrusy. The crackers with them were crispy and paired perfectly. We also had the carrot bread grilled cheese, which was so unique! The fried fish collars were cooked super well and perfectly salted. We also got the bratwurst which were nicely charred with some yummy, mustardy potatoes. Our favorite dish was actually dessert! It was a delicious red velvet brownie that was super decadent but perfectly balanced with the filling. Definitely don't skip the dessert menu! Overall, it was a great experience. They mentioned that they change their menu seasonally, so we will definitely be back to try different options!
