a birthday cake with a unicorn on it
Mollie W.

Darlene was very quick to connect with initially via phone and then over text with follow up questions. The cake was DELICIOUS! Half chocolate, half vanilla with chocolate frosting. I sent her inspiration photos of the unicorn silhouette and it came out just as I'd hoped. Very pleased, will recommend and use her again!

a slice of cake and a slice of pizza
Shore G.

Darlene has terrific customer service, answering the phone herself, and enthusiastically answering every question. She couldn't have been nicer, and only 2 day notice is usually needed, and pickup is easy, because the Donut shop she distributes out of is open 18 hours a day! She is happy to do taste tests, which in retrospect I should have done, but I really didn't think I needed that, since she said her most popular flavor is 1/2 vanilla & 1/2 chocolate, and that is what I wanted. All that being said, my cake was a real disappointment. Thinking back there were many things I should have done differently - so I am sharing this to hopefully help another person from making these same mistakes. Let my inexperience help you...I should have gone to Foxes Donut Den and seen her work before blindly trusting that what I had in my head, even though we discussed it twice, was what I was going to get. Having not ever ordered from her, I wish I had known to request a sketch of what she was thinking of doing. Darlene has no website. I should have known when I asked if there was a book at the shop that I could look through to get an idea of what she did, and she said no, because she has never done what I was asking for, that I might need to go the extra mile to insure success. Too bad, really. I was excited to share this successful long time Nashville business's yummy creation's ( that I had enjoyed a number of years ago) with my coworkers and friends. I ordered the baby shower cake to feed 25-35. I wanted a baby blue Bear holding a green light saber and the words "May the Force be with You" written in white on the dark navy blue background (since that is how it is in the movie, floating back into space). Darlene asked me how much I wanted to spend, and based on my answer then suggested said they could do a bear in pale blue on the side of a sheet cake - he would be raised up 1/2 inch off the cake. Then the rest would be normal sheet cake with the words. Sounded perfect. Below pic is what was made. Ok. The fact that it looked nothing like what I envisioned took me a minute to get over...but it was ok. The fact that it looked like it was done by a 10 year old was a problem. But the party must go on....and Darlene Cakes are supposed be the freshest and yummiest...so once I got over the design, I tried to console myself that it was going to be really moist and delicious, and that was what really mattered, right? Well, It was not fabulous. It was merely ok. The vanilla had hardly any flavor and was somewhat dry, but the chocolate was better than the vanilla, and more moist. The icing was way too heavy and had no butter flavor in the buttercream. Super dissappointed. Somewhat embarrassed, and many lessons learned from Darlene. I wish her well, but heed my warning...go have a taste test and bring what you have in mind for her too see, and have her draw out for you what she is thinking she understands you to want.

Mushy and had to be scooped up with a spatula spoon to even serve it. This top tier was supposed to be fresh strawberries with a white cake!

Dry, crumbly. Not tasty. Disappointed. They used to be so good but this German Chocolate was not good. We had one piece and discarded it.

They don't have the flake of a croissant or the light airy vibe of a yeast donut. I also tried the Strawberry Fields, Milk Chocolate, Blueberry Lemon and the Chocolate Sea Salt. The Blueberry Lemon was good the first day, but it seemed that the donuts don't hold up beyond fresh. I feel that may have changed my opinion on some of the other flavors. However, the vanilla crème was good the next day. I conclude they are not my favorite and I would probably stop in for something special to get the Purist or the Vanilla Crème. It was definitely an experience. I'm glad I tried them. However, I think I'm super spoiled by my pastry shoppes in the city and my favorite Amish bakers on the Shore. The shoppe was cute and the service was fine. No complaints. It's nice to know they have an ingredient list to check, I appreciated that. I'd say give them a try because I definitely think it's a preference because the locals raved.

Response to the…read morebusiness owner's lies plus screenshots is added to the bottom of my review Tried to order a cake from this business for October of this year and this business owner isn't truthful or very nice to work with. The cake is a simple 6" round cake for my elopement. Everything was set and an invoice was sent over which unfortunately went to spam. When I did a search of my emails to figure out what was going on with the cake portion of my wedding since I hadn't heard anything in awhile, I noticed her order cancellation email (she sent this over on August 28th- screenshots provided). It had been sent two days before hand so I sent over an immediate email explaining it had been sent to spam but that I can pay immediately (sent to her on August 30th). I just received an email response back today (September 4th- 5 whole days from my email stating I could pay immediately) saying they are now booked and cannot do my cake. Mind you this is again a 6" round cake that is needed on a Friday in October which is almost 6 weeks away. Ironic too that in her reviews there are multiple reviews about being able to get last minute cakes from her, including one posted just 2 weeks ago for a pretty elaborate 2 tiered cake. Wild to think in the height of summer wedding season someone is able to get a two tiered cake last minute. The owner also had the nerve to state she tried to call my phone but it wasn't in service which is not true and felt like a rude jab. I'm including the emails to prove the validity of my review as this owner likes to claim she has no memory of having interactions with people leaving low reviews. All in all, this place is very expensive for rude and petty behavior from this business owner. I'm also attaching my invoice for the price of a basic 6" round cake. Definitely would not recommend this business to anyone, especially brides. ***response to the business owner's lies. I'm adding a screenshot of the email I sent to the owner which shows I never demanded my cake still be made if the order wasn't fulfilled or else I'd leave a bad review. After falsely being accused of my cell phone being shut off, I quickly saw this was not a person I'd want to do business with. I can also easily provide records that my cell phone was never out of service. The owner is now trying to dispute I've had dealings with her on other platforms. I hope others can see this is not someone they would want to do business with either as she's clearly not a truthful person.

I've always wanted to learn how to make macarons but the process seemed intimidating and the cost for classes in my area is high. When my friends proposed this, I couldn't believe the value. We had a hands on class where Heather taught us the best tips and tricks to tackle macarons at home. I left armed with a box of tasty treats (that I made!), detailed recipes, and so many great pieces of general baking advice. My baking has improved already. I would have given Eat the Art 5 stars if my experience had ended with just the class. But now that I have lots of time and nowhere to go, I decided to put my skills to the test. I made macarons at home! Heather is obviously an artist and you will definitely want to do as she says and "eat the art." If you're looking for a girls' weekend activity or something fun for a bachelorette party, you will not regret taking a class at Eat the Art!
