I honestly feel personally victimized by this bar. I Came to have a good time with my friends from out of town and the guy at the bar wouldn't serve me for literarily no reason. I wasn't even drunk!!! If I was drunk and belligerent I'd get it, but this guy obviously had something against me and the manager stalked me to see if my friends would give me a 'sip ' of alcohol. And when he thought my friend was trying to offer me alcohol he basically jumped out of the sky and raged to not give me anything. read more

Pretty good food. Burgers and fries are recommended. The main problem is if you don't drink or are the DD, you will have to pay 4.00 for soda, combined with the price of food, really makes it overpriced. Unfortunately Ive seen many people eating McDonalds next door instead of the decent food. Then going drinking at the darkhorse. I wish there was more focus on the food as this is a decent restaurant and Boulder has almost no good burger options. If you arrive at a time that the CU kids are there, they will undoubtedly be crowding the bartender and seating area so much that getting a bite to eat becomes a massive effort. read more

It was alright. You have to get and pay for your food separately at a window. So you have to grab your drink and hope that your spot is not taken by the time you get back. Our favorite burger place. They have games and the kids can go until 9pm. I love the atmosphere. Their ranch dressing is the best in town!

My friends and I love coming here every now and then to grab some beer and watch football. They have some cozy little booths tucked in the corners if you're lucky enough to find one. Really fun ambience and a great college dive bar. We've made it a tradition to always order the beer-battered zucchini plus mushrooms with ranch. So good. Easily, easily the best dive bar in Boulder, save maybe the Downer, but the clientele is more loyal here. Blows the Walrus, Pub, etc way out of the water. Good drink specials, creative themed nights (TRIKE!), and Boulder's best trivia night too. The Dark Horse is underappreciated. They are what other dive bars should aspire to be. read more

My friend was asked to leave the Dark Horse last night by the staff. "Just so you know, we're cutting you off..." said one of the doormen to my friend. We both shot each other this look like, huh? We've had two beers each and it's just past midnight and we're getting tossed? "You're swaying right now with my hand on your back." the doormen said to my friend. In all my 11 years of going to the bar, I've never been cut off or kicked out for exhibiting intoxicated behavior. Aren't you supposed to get a little tipsy at a bar? I love a tried and true neighborhood bar. This one hits all the marks, community, atmosphere, friendly staff, food, wine, beer and spirits at reasonable prices. Because of the weather we were seeking comfort food. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, hickory burger and the ham and cheese sandwich all with fries. The food didn't disappoint! And they've got a great happy hour to boot, we'll make this a place to return to for sure! read more

The food wasn't bad. I had a chipotle burger with mexi bean patty. Nothing special at all about the fries. It's seat yourself and self-service so you need to go to the bar and order your drinks and to the kitchen to order your food. Lastly, and my main reason for so few stars, is the joke they play on you at the restrooms. The men's room is marked "women" with a painting of a woman's leg and the women's room is marked "men" with a painting of a man's leg. So unless you lay close attention to a pointing hand you will walk in the wrong one. We were here for an hour and at least five people made that mistake. Lame. Won't be back. read more

I've been to the Dark Horse dozens of times over the years. It's what you expect: a bar with decent food and a usually fun place. I would ask, however, that management train the staff to understand liquor laws, not lie to patrons and use common sense. I was there tonight watching the OK/FLA game, and with about 3 minutes left, a member of the staff came around asking or IDs. My wife and I were watching the game with our 18-year-old son. I explained this to the employee and told him we were leaving as soon as the game was over (literally 3 minutes left). I let him know my son wasn't drinking, and I wasn't planning on letting him. He informed me that the bar had liability and it was his call. Yep, your call, but there is no liability. It is illegal for a bar to sell to a minor. It is not illegal for a minor to be in an establishment that serves alcohol after a certain time. If that's YOUR rule, Dark Horse, fine, but I would ask two things: 1. Stand on your own policy. Don't make up laws that don't exist to cover yourself. If your policy irritates your patrons, deal with it. Don't ask your staff to make up laws that don't exist so you don't have to deal with your own call. 2. Use common sense. If a raid were to happen, you would not be cited for a child being in the bar with his parents who was not drinking. If a group of college students were there and some were underage, I understand that issue. This is far from that. I can understand why you have the rule you do for unaccompanied minors in the bar. I would also not be writing this had your employee exercised some common sense and said "watch the last few minutes of the game, then I'll need to ask you to leave." OK. The actions of your employee were ridiculous. Guess I'll start watching games at the Lazy Dog on Pearl Street. I'll miss ya, Dark Horse. read more

I saw some fun punk bands here over the weekend. The bar itself is extremely amusing; it's covered with random objects from ceiling to floor. the drinks and food are reasonably priced, plus there's pool tables, darts, and air hockey. it's away from the main strip, which can be good and bad, but you can definitely tell it's a local landmark. if you don't like huge, insane crowds, i'd go here. slightly off the beaten path but worth the walk. read more

Classic Dive bar with great burgers. This place is covered head to toe in dark wood with ingravings in it everywhere and it kinda reeks of beer and cleaner. There are no servers, you order your food at the window from some greasy college cooks and grab your drinks at the bar( by the way cheap drinks!) As for the burgers I have tried their JiF burger(peanut butter and bacon, don't knock it till you try it) and blue cheese burger and they were both very filling a scrumptious. I have gone when they have hosted unicycle races around the bar for prizes, man that was entertaining. They also have a large game room so it might be fun for a birthday party. My dad said when he moved to Colorado in the 70's that he use to come here all the time, so I guess good things sometimes do last. read more

This was on the list of things to do and after a long day of hiking all throughout Estes Park and dinner, our last stop before heading back to Denver was Dark Horse. Decor? Divey and dirty, just the way I wouldn't have mind it back in college. We ordered the rocky mountain oysters and boy were they boring. But hey, we had to give it a try! Maybe it's just that I wasn't too into the deep friend batter but I'm glad to have had the experience. I used to LOVE the Darkhorse, right up until my last visit there. I had been a patron for years and spent hundreds of dollars on food and beverages, and often brought many friends there. However, my LAST trip was by far the worst experience I've ever had in any dining establishment. A waiter, whom will remain nameless, harassed me into leaving for open carrying (during a late lunch hour) into the restaurant (as has been my custom after nearly every range day). The meal started as any other would, a beverage from the bar, order food at the window, retire to a table with my friends to shoot the shit. I don't know if a patron complained to somebody, or if this waiter simply took it upon themselves to rain down righteous indignation upon me, but after such beratement (and really, who talks shit to a person carrying a firearm anyways), I decided it was best to simply leave rather than create a scene and allow the interaction to escalate out of hand. They'll never get another dime of my $$$ read more

Food and drink specials are alright. The bar service and overall attitude of most of the employees though, garbage. Very unprofessional to say the least. From the power tripping door man who felt the need to ID everyone in my work group several times (even though we had all been IDed and hand stamped) to the confrontational, eavesdropping, yoga pant wearing bartender (no shame in the game). Even the manager "Tanner" proved to be immature and petty when questioned about the incident. We always used to frequent this place after work but after this last experience and seeing how my colleagues (one who is a military veteran) were treated, it's very doubtful this place will get any of our business again. College kids shouldn't run bars. read more

Don't let me order an 8 dollar drink at last call (which in my experience doesn't meant 5-10 minutes and staff from the Dark Horse are in your face SHOUTING to get out).... and then expect me to suck it down and leave. A review just popped up about the Dark Horse and it brought back one of my most favorite moments spent with my Dad, he has been gone since 1984 so yes the Dark Horse has stood the test of time. Highway 36 closed because of ice and we stopped in the Dark Horse until the roads opened again. (Mother was there to drive.) I just remember a nice dark interior, good cheap drinks, and a great hamburger. Thanks Sara S for posting that review and bringing back a fond memory. OMG!!! So good. Even has a Jiffy burger (peanut butter burger-an absolutely awesome combo I discovered living in New Orleans). Dark Horse is a great funky place that really throws down when making their grub. Great beer on tap, able to find a spot to eat at a table. Fun wall candy to peruse while eating and plenty of TVs for game night. This place rivals Washington's in FoCo. We've lived in Boulder forever, and I kept forgetting about all the raves on Dark Horse's burgers, finally my son's desire for just a good damn burger got us to go. Excellent deal, burgers are huge. Lots of variety and a fun mad cap place to chill. Definitely a must go to when in Boulder. read more

I'm sure the food and drink are great. The atmosphere looked like lots of fun. However, a misfortunate event left a bad taste in my mouth. We will not be back. After a night hike in Rocky Mountain a group of us, mind you all 30+ went to grab dinner on our way back to Denver. At the door they checked our IDs and stamped our hands, a assume for being over 21. After the majority of our party went through and began ordering food, the last person realized she forgot her ID. When she told the bouncer she was just planning to eat so she didn't need a stamp, he informed us that it was 21 and up. While we totally understood, we still needed to corral the group, some of which had already ordered food. After we tried to go talk to the group, get their food to go, 3 large males surrounded my IDless friend, a 115 pound girl and demanded her immediate exit from both the bar and building all together, including the lobby. Her phone was dead, her friends were waiting to get their food to go because we understood she could not come in, she did not have keys to a car, it was after 10pm and it was dumping rain and snow. Rather than use any semblance of common sense and allow her to stand in the lobby to wait, it took three huge bouncers to confront her in front of everyone to get out now, despite her standing by the doorway in the lobby. Go stand in the snow and rain. In my opinion this was a poor judgment call and beyond poor customer service. read more
