The Tavern updated the menu and we have some winners! Our table tried the Hot Honey Chicken, brisket dinner, Rueben and brisket sandwich. All were great. Cathy and Ted, the owners along side with their chef have really tried to bring some solid options to the mountains. Friendly help is always a plus and we loved Nieves as our waitress. I have mixed feelings about these place. It needs a remodel very badly. Not to mention a good cleaning! Please people it would make such a huge difference to have new clean menus, and your staff in some type of uniform. The food was a hit and miss. Some things were good and others were not. The desserts were fire! They didn't have all the beers available and the water was disgusting. Our server was great. I am not inclined to re-visit. It could be a fabulous place but needs a lot of work, finesse and style. Something I don't think the owners have or want. read more

Popped in for a drink and was able to sit at the bar. My friend was a regular here so she was greeted by almost everyone, which really showed the sense of community they provide. I got a simple vodka and cranberry which was a perfect distraction from the thunderstorm that passed by outside. Nice and quiet inside and everything was clean. read more

A buddy of mine lives in Coal Creek Canyon and loved to go to this bar near his home. We went with him and his wife and had a great time. It is a local bar, frequented by locals, so I understand if a stranger might not feel welcomed when they come in. The vibe in the bar is one of a "mountain bar" that's a local watering hole. The food was worth ordering and the people around us were friendly... maybe because I was within one of the locals? If you're in the area and see it while driving down 72, don't hesitate to stop in. Incredible bar and grill in the scenic Rocky Mountains. We came in starving after a round at a nearby disc golf course. The staff was affectionate and got us drinks and orders immediately. As we waited for our food, we were able to take in the amazing setting that this restaurant has. The views of local nature are breathtaking and the personality inside the bar is amazing too. The food was equally as impressive. I was able to try a couple different flavors of wings, chicken tenders, and fries, and they were all great. My brother absolutely loved his French dip sandwich. Stopped here on way to RMNP - the back way from Denver. Wow!! I wasn't expecting much. Stopped because it had outdoor seating. Prices were a bit high - but we were starving. Got the Bison Burger with berry jam and they added peanut butter - amazing!!! I had the triple whammy with link sausage, brisket and I think pulled pork - unreal. So good!! I talked to the waitress and she said the chef has a bunch of restaurants around Denver. New ownership or chef??? Amazing experience. Thanks again. What a surprising visit. First off, this is, as others have said, a local bar. People walked in and the bartender knew their names. She also knew their preferences for IPAs and cigarettes. I got a French Dip and tater tots. Both were hot, fresh, and delicious. I ordered an iced tea, but their selection of local and craft beers is extensive. They have free wi-fi, tons of tvs for watching sports, and a great view of the canyon. It's no frills, but there's also nothing to complain about. Not being a local I felt a bit apprehensive, especially sitting at the bar on a Saturday to watch college football. But my discomfort was solely my own as everyone was smiling and chatted freely with me and others. If you're taking a scenic drive through the canyon I'd highly recommend this convenient stop as a place to get a bite, enjoy the views, and make sure you've downloaded your map to your next stop along the winding roads. read more

Overall a wonferful experience. Our server was amazing and so kind. They had blankets for guests for the evening when it gets chilly which added to the vibes and really made us feel at home. Really good food. Surprising for such an out of the way place, which looks like a run of the mill place from the outside (although I nice deck with a great mountain view). But the food was amazing. Great mountain local tavern, reminds me of the Coal Creek Inn from many years ago. Typical woodsie ambiance with doggo friendly patio and killer views. Really impressed with the new ownership, the food is so much better now, thank you. The smoked foods are really OVERsmoked, though. The only flavor you get out of them is campfire smoke. Have tried the lamb, brisket, and wings now. Brisket was really over done and dry. You can tell it's good product but really not done justice with this technique. Lamb was the best but flavor was lost on smoke. Buffalo wings had no buffalo flavor, only smoke. I love the ambition, so this comes only as a constructive critique. read more

Perfect stop for after a big hike! They have veggie burgers for an additional $3+, but they have them! I got the bbq veggie burger with cheddar - I think they forgot the crispy onions but it was flavorful. I do wish the bun was toasted with a little more bbq sauce but overall was tasty. My boyfriend enjoyed his spaghetti and meatballs, but he said some more noodles would've been good for the generous amount of sauce. He said it was tasty though - especially the garlic bread. It's a nice place to have a drink and enjoy the scenery. I was recommended not to eat there, and it's sadly true. We had a stunning Fall day on the Caribou 4WD Route today and stopped at Last Stand for dinner on the way home. They had signs on the door about being short-handed which we totally relate with - owning a business in Denver ourselves. Been living in the canyon for about 4 years and my partner, 20+ years. Came in here on a slow night. My partner owns a large meat packing business and I work in software development. We were in "housework" clothes and never greeted when we came in. Wings were super salty. Owner seemed like she was more interested in talking to / greeting a more "affluent" looking family. When I tried to say hi she just raised her eyebrows at me. It was weird, off-putting, and not welcoming at all. Our waitress didn't want to make a pot of coffee because her shift was almost over? We stopped here for a quick bite after a nearby hike this weekend and while it got the job done, I can't say I'll return often. $15+ for a burger and fries seems steep for the quality of food you're getting. Maybe it's the added costs of getting food supplies up the mountain, but it seems to be quite expensive for the level of bar food atmosphere they try and promote. Looking for some mountain entertainment, then head on over to the last stand. I live literally 8/10 of a mile from it and I absolutely love the place. You can sit outside and smell the fresh air and look at the scenery or you can stay inside where all the action is going on. They do have live bands and that's always fun because they change all the time. read more

Great place to hang with the neighbors and have drinks. The food, with the exception of the wings leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately they have no healthy items on the menu, say for the very small $12 chicken Caesar salad, so we eat before we go. Hopefully they'll solicit customers input soon, we need this place to be successful in the canyon. Fix the menu and we'll be adding more stars, until then it's drinks only....they'd do well to see what's working at Jack's down the road, that place doles out food likes it's a fire sale. I am sitting at the Last Stand enjoying my 2nd Moose Drool and typing this 5 star review because of the friendly service and the delicious food! The fried pickles were do good but my wife and I both said they were some of the best we've ever had. Breaded with cornmeal and served with ranch or a great Thai chili sauce on the side that I would have never even thought of. We almost left but thankfully the other reviews that talked about how good the Philly steak sandwich was caused us decide to try it. Absolutely delicious and the tots were perfect as well.
