From the moment my girlfriend and I walked in, we were greeted with the utmost hospitality. Welcomed personally. When we arrived, it was about three of four parties sitting enjoying their food. After getting acquainted with the menu, I asked about personalization. How many meats & What is exactly inside? One of the guys responded, whatever you want. That made my girl really happy because she is picky. I ordered a chicken and shrimp burrito. While she ordered a beef and shrimp taco bowl. The way it works is chicken is $6.99 and any other meat (beef, pork, shrimp) is $7.99. Very inexpensive, great quality food. The taco bowls include choice of meats, rice, beans, corn, lettuce & choice of cheese. You also get to add sauces: salsa, hot, "white", sour cream, etc. The rice was plentiful. Hole in the wall, busy taco place. When I went, the owner himself was working the grill while taking orders and supervising lunch service. I ordered the chicken burrito and it is average - mostly bc you can get a fatter burrito w more ingredients and fresh salsa at say, Chipotle. BUT they have excellent and quick service - from the grill to the cashier. I loved watching the limited staff in this ma and pa, knock out about 7 orders in the matter of 5 minutes. This is not Mexican food this is "stuff your face" big portion Tex mex chopped up meat and salad w cheese and a white sauce similar to halal carts. Tastes good but feel terrible after. Not high quality and the place is grimy. Owners are friendly and care but this place is not a 4 star place by any stretch. It's not Qdoba but its fresh veggies will provide for a pretty decent taco salad. Not too sold on this. But I may revisit to try it again. Space is clean, the employees were personable and swift with service without compromising cleanliness. It's unfortunate to go somewhere, enjoy it, then slowly but surely begin to hate it. Have been to Dario's quite a few times now after my great first visit. Second time going I decided to have the chicken quesadilla ... Bad move! The chicken was way too charred and chopped, felt and taste like I was eating cat food :( There also were shrimp included, which I did not ask for, and thank God am not allergic too. This was around 1 on a week day, and I understand being popular/crowded during lunch, but doing rush jobs is just unacceptable, also skimping on portions (I definitely got like half or 3/4 of a quesadilla). Next time I went, around 2 on a week day, no steak. Fourth time, steak was available and that was a good day. Now FWD to today, I ordered a steak burrito ... My only complaint was the shell wasn't crunchy, but it didn't impact the overall meal which was great. I arrived about 30 minutes before they closed so I'm sure the shell was made earlier in the day. Coming from California, I've eaten plenty of awesome burritos with delicious, well-seasoned meat and fresh ingredients, and I must say that I left Dario's a little disappointed... maybe because I was expecting more after reading all these positive reviews. Don't get me wrong--Chef Dario was a welcoming host and the burrito meat was great, but I was a bit turned off after spying a huge jar of Tostitos/Pace salsa in the back. Nothing's wrong with store bought salsa, but if I'm going to eat store bought salsa, it's going to be with some salty plain chips NOT with my burrito. This is a family owned business. I am actually a regular here that Dario knows my order and says the usual. Dario is friendly and takes care of his common visitors. I typically get the chicken quesadilla and its so yummy. People also get the taco bowl but i still like the quesadilla better. This place can get busy during lunchtime (noon) and there is no parking. Cute little place in downtown Newark, next to a Dunkin Donuts in an area that gets very busy with office workers during lunch hour. As soon as you walk in, you see the very friendly owner by the grill. You can order to go or stay-in, as there is seating towards the back. I ordered a garlic chicken burrito, which wasn't as great as I expected but still good. The steak burrito is beyond outstanding, so go with that if you like meat. It is filled with rice, black beans, corn, peppers, and a spicy cream sauce. What's most impressive is that you can stuff your face with a great burrito for about 5 dollars, which in northern NJ is a steal. I really wish I had known about this place earlier. Dario is always manning the grill, and is super nice and easy to talk to. When asked whether you want your food spicy, I'd suggest saying "yes," because it really isn't too much heat. I always order the chicken burrito. It's $6.50, which includes rice. The food is super fresh, and I love the addition of corn and sweet peppers. It's so delicious. Awesome food. I love the fact that their platters, burritos and quesadillas are so flavorful and well portioned. For $6-7, you'll leave full and pretty proud of your great decision making. I always have the garlic chicken platter with a side of sweet plantains (plantains are a bit greasy, but they do the job). I'm not sure what sauces they slather on the chicken but its so good. We found this little gem while on a layover at EWR. It took only 15 minutes to get there on bus 62...the line was out the door so we knew it had to be good! It's a little chaotic but impressive how many orders Dario can remember and prepare at one time.
