I wish I'd read the plethora of negative reviews before buying chicks from this farm. It would have saved me from a total nightmare. I paid $50-$60 per bird for 5 chickens from Dare 2 Dream Farms because I believed I was buying healthy, responsibly raised animals from a higher-standard, "organic" operation. What arrived was the opposite. The transport box itself already contained bloody stool. Before the birds were even out, there was visible evidence of serious illness. Once inside, it became clear how severe it was. These chickens were emaciated to the point of feeling skeletal, weak, huddling, and not drinking. Within hours they were deteriorating and continuing to pass blood. This was not stress. These were critically ill animals on arrival. For comparison, I also bought 3 new chicks from a different source the day before (costing ~$20 per bird). Those birds were active, chirping, eating, and thriving immediately. The contrast was stark. An independent poultry specialist confirmed what was evident: these birds were severely compromised and had been for some time. This condition does not develop during transport. Beyond the condition of the birds themselves, this created a serious biosecurity risk. I have an established, healthy, happy flock of 13 hens and 3 chicks. Introducing visibly sick birds -- with active bloody stool -- put my entire flock at risk of infection. I had to immediately isolate, treat, and manage the situation as a potential contamination event, spending the next 9 days in intensive, around-the-clock care trying to keep the new birds alive while protecting the rest of my flock. Nightmare and ethical dilemma. The response from the farm made the situation worse. The condition was initially minimized as "normal", then explanations shifted. At the same time, I was repeatedly encouraged to return the birds. I refused. Given their state, I believe they would have died if they had been sent back. They required constant intervention just to stabilize. A partial "goodwill" refund was offered while I was actively managing a severe medical situation, then a full refund was made contingent on returning the birds, and ultimately any refund was revoked. To be clear: 1. Premium price charged for supposedly high-quality birds 2. Birds arrived visibly sick, emaciated, and passing blood 3. Biohazard risk introduced to a healthy flock 4. Condition minimized rather than addressed 5. Pressure to return animals in critical condition 6. Refund offered, then withdrawn This is not a minor issue or bad luck. This is a failure of basic animal welfare and responsible husbandry. I cannot recommend this farm under any circumstances. read more

I've been really meaning to buy some products here but it has been difficult since they don't open on weekends and they have limited hours. Luckily today, I stopped by on my way to an appointment and I was pleasantly surprised! The stand was very organized and super cute! Hopefully they will extend hours/do business online. The honey was a dollar cheaper here and the eggs looked really fresh. I ended up buying some honey, onions, and jam. Update in response to owners response-- When I initially asked for a return/refund (immediately after getting home and seeing the agent/condition of the birds) I was told I had to drive them all the way back (approx 5-6 hours roundtrip) with zero compensation for gas/inconvenience. That was the **ONLY** option. Eventually (after a huge back and forth) I was offered a $20 medicine credit (you can not purchase the necessary medication ANYWHERE for only $20) and finally they said that they would come pick up the chickens, but it had to be the specific day they would already be in my area (I was not available, as I work nor did I feel comfortable having them at my home at this point) and that there was ZERO compensation for the extreme inconvenience, wasted time and having to completely clean, sanitize and disinfect my coop/run. Even after going to BBB I had to argue to get a measly $75, which didn't even cover my vet/medicine expenses. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Bought (5) 12-18 week pullets. What I received was (5) 8-10 week pullets with a SEVERE case of roundworms. 1 of which (confirmed by vet) has coccidiosis and 1 that was hen pecked. All of the pullets were very dirty and they are absolutely TERRIFIED of humans. Had to file a BBB claim and fight just to get them to refund $75 (of the $230 I spent) for meds and (unexpectedly, after one took a turn for the worse) a vet bill. (Which ended up costing well over $75 unfortunately) I wouldn't recommend this irresponsible breeder to my worst enemy. It seems that sick chickens are extremely common here. (Owner even said that it was "normal"!!!). They might build nice coops or sell good produce, but if you buy chickens from them, expect them to be extremely ill. :( **on top of it, I tried calling several times before I placed my order (never answered and did not get a returned call) and also called several times after receiving my sick pullets--no answer. A quick update, we lost yet another hen to confirmed Marek's. That makes 8 out of the 11 dead within the first few years. I understand that Marek's is complex, and can be carried on the wind and whatnot, but many people in our area (Oakland/Berkeley) have backyard hens, and they aren't all dying at this alarming rate. Our hens live in the lap of luxury and aren't stressed in any way that should make them more susceptible. They shouldn't be dying like this. We will be expanding our flock from another source. read more

The BEST and ONLY place to get Chickens. When we started our chicken adventures in 4/2016 somehow we found Dare 2 Dream Farms they had many of the breeds we were looking for in stock and despite living in Southern California, they delivered, so we ordered 6 sexed female chicks from them backed by their guarantee. Well, they are good at what they do and all 6 were indeed females. They were all beautiful, happy and healthy. Over the past several years we have gotten chicks from 3 other local places here in Southern California and none of them were as healthy or friendly as our first girls, some sexed females were Roos and several died. But 4.5 years later we still have 2 of the original 6 from Dare to Dream and our EE still lays HUGE beautiful blue eggs almost daily. So when we were in the market for some new chicks again, we knew the only option was Dare 2 Dream, only this time we made a weekend of it and took the drive to pick them up ourselves. To be clear this is a working farm, so sometimes they are busy, it took us a few minutes to find someone to help but soon Jeremy was on it filling our order. Just after, Megan came down and told us that one of the cows had just birthed a baby calf less than 30 minutes before. While Jeremy was hand selecting the Chickens we ordered, they allowed us to take a quick peek (at a safe distance) of the new baby calf. My girls (8y and 5y) were THRILLED!!! After a few pets for their lovely farm dog and very friendly farm cat, we had our chicks and 2 "hen pecked" pullets and were on our way. These new babies are also THE SWEETEST, calm and quite happy being snuggled by my girls even falling asleep on occasion. We are so excited to watch them grow. Dare 2 Dream Farms is truly a special place! I had the privilege of working here for 6 months and can attest to the passion, heart, and thoughtfulness that goes into the whole operation. The owners, Jeremy and Megan, are wonderful people who believe in something and wake up every morning to make it happen. They have expanded their farm and continue to improve the workflow and offerings. That's not even talking about how cool and fun they are! Of course the bosses could not do it without the whole team, one that is more like a family than co-workers. The jobs vary, but the professionalism and heart are present through it all. If you buy chickens here, know that they were monitored and cared for by Rachel and Mau who are extremely knowledgeable and kind. Beyond the animals, Rachel is a wizard in the kitchen and makes an entire line of natural, healthy beauty products...and the fresh bread...and the cheese...I could go on, but to sum up, if you stop by the farm stand, you have to pick some of those up! Of course they have the organic garden where they are always growing something fresh for the season to sell at the farm stand. Trust me, you can taste the difference! If you're local, it's absolutely worth your drive over there to have the best produce in town. One other thing they do is make these unbelievably gorgeous chicken coops! Dare to Dream Farms is a true gem in Lompoc. Nestled in a cozy woodsy area, the chickens are allowed to roam around and enjoy life while producing amazing eggs of stellar quality. The cows aren't doing too bad either. Happy cows... well, are delivering delicious creamy milk. It broke my heart to have to humanely euthanize 2 of my girls. When I asked the owner for a refund , she did nothing but make excuses . I had been wanting a couple of backyard chickens for a few years. I did a ton of research about places to buy them in my area. When I came across Dare 2 Dream Farms online, I could tell that this was the best place to get them. You can't get any better than a family farm... We drove up to Lompoc yesterday (about a 2.5 hour drive each way) and it was SO WORTH IT!!! The farm is absolutely adorable and we were greeted by an adorable fluffy dog. We walked into the office where it felt like a family living room. I wanted 3 chicks in total but I wanted some advice on which breeds were right for me. She was so helpful and understood exactly what I was looking for. When the chicks were brought out to me, they were happily chirping and hopping around the box. We bought the feed directly from them and they directed us to a cute little pet shop down the street, called Lemos, where we collected the rest of the supplies we needed. Everyone was so helpful and this was such an amazing experience. The chicks look completely healthy and I love how they are vaccinated and looked well taken care of at the farm. We got 1 golden sexlink, 1 barred rock, and 1 easter egger. They are already so bonded and the farm told me to call any time if I had any questions. I also love the ability to "chat" with them on their website. If you are looking to start your own flock, this is definitely the place to go. It really hurts me to write this review because we were so happy with the customer service when getting our chicks, but 4 of the 5 hens we've gotten from D2D have died in a year. They've all had either developmental issues or tumors or lesions or they passed away without any symptoms at all. I am almost 100% certain that all of our girls have / had Marek's and the vet believes so as well. I have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills trying to save them, to no avail. I'm so traumatized by their deaths. I wish I could go back in time and never have purchased from D2D, but I still loved them all so very much, they were so important to me. My little girls. We ordered four, 6-10 week old, coop ready chicks - 2 olive eggers and 2 easter eggers. We opted to have them delivered. Unfortunately, by the time they were actually delivered, they were 11-12 weeks old. Even though we lost extra bonding time, that was fine, I just wish it was made clear to us that they would be older by the time of delivery. We might have opted for younger chicks if we had known that. Another issue was I ordered 6-10 week old coop-ready chicks. What we got was hen pecked pullets. Every bird was missing feathers and just looked rough. Again, that's fine, we would never return an animal because of looks, but we paid a hefty price for non-hen pecked. I reached out to customer service, and they refunded me the difference. No questions asked. No issues with customer service. Our last issue is that within two days, one of our olive eggers died. We don't know why, but I was told that D2D had the best chickens around, and having one die so quickly was a disappointment. They offered to replace the chicken, but again, with the delivery, it wouldn't have been delivered for at least two weeks. The problem with that is our current 3 would have had bonding time and somewhat figured out the pecking order so throwing another bird in the mix wouldn't have been good for the 1 bird. I'm sure she would have been bullied. We opted to just get a refund for the lost chicken. All in all, the customer service is great. I'm just disappointed with the quality and health of the birds. I bought 3 chicks from this farm 1 year ago and added another 2 about 6 weeks later. I checked their website, which states that they vaccinate their chicks against Marek's disease. Within less than one year, I lost 3 of the hens to Marek's disease. The other two are most likely inevitably also infected with this highly contagious disease. While it is true that vaccines are not 100% effective, having lost more than half of the flock to the same disease within less than one year, seems to me that there either has been a problem with the vaccine (these vaccines have to be handled and stored properly), or they were not immunized properly. Two of my daughters are veterinarians, and I have raised and maintained many animals before. I am not inexperienced working with farm animals. Unfortunately, the farm's response was that of, while they are sorry, nothing can/will be done. Since this is such a highly contagious disease, I cannot add new hens (as their health would be jeopardized as well), nor can I re-home the ones I have. I am posting this as a caution to others. It is very traumatic and costly to see these hens get sick and then dealing the vet bills to euthanize them humanely. In addition, it is very difficult to find veterinarians who work with chickens (for some it falls under avian and others under exotics). read more

One of our cute chicks turned out to be a rooster. I didn't want to give him away to someone who was going to eat him "humanely" (as one of the nearby farms offered) or to put him in cock-fighting (as my gardener offered), so I called D2D to inquire on other placement possibilities. She graciously agreed to pick him up for a transportation fee. Now the little cockerel is happily living with hundreds of hens back in D2D. We started our backyard flock and chose to get our chicks from Dare2Dream due to their great reviews...we were not disappointed. Doreen, who is their customer service extraordinaire contacted us well in advance of our delivery date to tell us she would be scheduling the delivery. She then scheduled the delivery the day before, just as promised. On the day of delivery, Aidan (sp?) our delivery guy was running early...so of course he called to let us know and ask if it was okay. He also was awesome. Earlier this week we had a bit of a surprise when we heard a crow from the brood box...yes, we had a "rooster in the hen house." When I contacted Doreen, she got back to me right away, and we have already scheduled the replacement delivery. We've had great chickens and a great customer service experience. I bought four chicks from here 11 months ago and one just had to be put down bc she had Mareks. She was my favorite chicken and I'm beyond heartbroken. The vet as soon as she examined the chicken said Dare to Dream farms? So upsetting. I hope my others are okay. DTD needs to get their act together and stop selling sick birds. Clearly their vaccination practices are poor, considering they have a reputation of the farm that sells checks with Marek's. We frequent Dare to Dream farm stand often and have loved watching it grow over the years. Everything is so fresh, yummy and thoughtfully presented. They knock their special events out of the park, pairing wonderful local wines with food prepared on the farm. Such a treat! We have 3 chickens from Dare to Dream Farms, carefully chosen by our then, 6.5 year old. The owners took the time to show our daughter every single chick, what they'd look like when they were older, what their eggs would look like, truly such patient, wonderful people. I ordered three pullets for pickup at a local feed store. I received both phone and email confirmations of my pickup. I did call and email with various questions before and after ordering, and always received a prompt, polite, and detailed response to my questions. At pickup, the young man delivering the chickens opened up the traveling box to confirm which chickens I had, just to make sure I got the right ones. My only problem now is that I was planning on waiting a few years before adding to my flock, so that I don't end up with six geriatric chickens and no eggs (my city only allows a limit of six chickens), but I am enjoying my girls so much that I am having a really hard time not getting more now! All three of my girls seem healthy and we have had no problems so far. (It has been a month so far.) read more

I decided to get a couple of hens last year and contacted Dare 2 Dream farms. They were awesome! They answered all my questions and delivered the chicks to me. I have a dog and cat and my roommate has two dogs as well. All the animals got along from the start except for my dog, who decided the chicks were for eating. Doreen at Dare 2 Dream gave me a lot of good advice for dealing with the situation and I am happy to say it worked and they all get along wonderfully now. The chickens are so much fun! Mother Clucker is a very quiet sweetheart and expert cricket finder, Princess Lay-a is lap chicken who likes being pet and hand-fed and is always trying to break the "no chickens in the house" rule. I am over the moon with my new chicken coop! The team at Dare2Dream farms are amazing!! They gave me great advice and I was able to find the perfect coop for my back yard. We purchased three Rhode Island Red coop-ready hens from this farm in early 2022. Since then, two of the three have died of probable Marek's disease (we had professional necropsies done and also an avian vet involved in the first case). One died after we'd had her for only two months, and another seemed fine for a long time but died recently after living with us for about 20 months. I realize vaccinations aren't perfect, but like other reviewers I'm very surprised at this high mortality rate in vaccinated birds. I read in the owner's response to another review that the vaccination is done at the hatchery, not the farm. Whatever the reason, either a problem with the vaccinations or a virulent strain of the disease that has mutated, we will not be buying birds from this farm again. It is too risky. I'm grateful that other people wrote about this in their reviews because I feel less alone dealing with it--it's very sad and frustrating. read more

when you put chickens in the shopping cart and then pick another item like the brooder kit I wanted and go to check out, someone can take those chickens out of your shopping cart if they check out faster than you which isn't fair and you have to start over picking a different chick breed and the same thing happened 3 times. This was during their sale last Thursday April 9th. Then, I got an email late at night that my shopping cart still have the chickens in there and my girls got excited I went to click on it and it was empty. Very frustrating check out process it's like fighting for tickets thru Ticketmaster, we bought at another hatchery without issue and cheaper price. I gave two stars for at least responding to my frustration but then they just pointed out I can try next Thursday without fixing their issue. read more
