Where to start with Danzversity? I have been taking dance classes at Danzversity since October of last year, so going on four months now. I had been seeking a dance studio that had a real community feel and good vibes, in addition to interesting classes for adults and attentive and caring instructors. I tried a few studios in the area and none really clicked for me as much as Danzversity did. The two core instructors, Jaymie and Hassan, have truly cultivated a special environment here. There's something about the space that just inspires joy and carefree feelings. People of all dance experience levels come here and learn, and everyone is supportive of one another. The instructors inspire and promote a judgement free environment. Somehow, whenever I come here, no matter how stressed and anxious I am from my work day, my racing mind settles and I leave with a belief that I can handle my "problems". I don't know how exactly that happens, but I 100% attribute the consistency of positive experiences to whatever it is that Jaymie and Hassan do when they step to the front and center of class and turn up the music. It's as if the good vibes that flow through their veins ooze through their pores and circulate through the air and then somehow make their way into our bloodstreams. I don't know y'all. I just feel good in there. Everyone feels good in there. Needless to say, dance class has become therapy for me, and I've become a regular. Even my husband who used to refuse to dance with me at weddings has become a regular. A self-described "tin man" of two left feet whose calves cramp easily, he wears a big goofy grin throughout class. And with a few months of consistency, I'm proud to say he's at a point where he will be able to keep up with me on wedding dance floors. The adult classes last 50 minutes, with the first half a warm-up that prioritizes elevating body temperature and practicing steps that will eventually make their way into a choreography sequence in the second half of the class. It is a good workout and people go at their own pace. Breaks for water and whatever is needed are encouraged. For some classes there is actually a live DJ. That's right - a LIVE DJ. It's like a real party in there. Danzversity also hosts guest professional dancers who put up an instructional session for Afrobeat dance styles once per month with Pon-Di-Beat (check out pondibeat.com for more info). I've been to one of those and am so looking forward to the next one. WOW! I can't say enough good things about the Beginner Hip-Hop class, or or the teacher, Jaymie. The class was exactly what it said, beginner hip-hop, not beginner-but-not-really, which I've encountered other places. And the teacher was so good! She moved the class at the speed we needed, she made us feel so energized and open and unjudged, and she got us far enough in one class to really feel a sense of accomplishment. I learned a lot about the different feel of hip-hop compared to other styles, and I picked up a lot of basic moves. And I was so impressed with her responsiveness to the class as a whole, and individually. The other students were a mix of all ages and fitness and dance ability, and everyone was super friendly and fun, mostly because that's the atmosphere she really actively created. And the space is feels great too. It's just one big open studio, with a really good vibe, not sure how else to explain that part. I've tried a few other studios for beginner hip-hop, and also hip-hop fitness stuff, and this was by far my favorite place. I can't wait to try out other classes there, I am so thrilled to have found this place. If the other teachers are half as good as Jaymie, I'm going to work my way through every class! read more

Great dance studio for boys and girls! Jaymie has a studio that teaches kids more than dance, but how to feel the music and interpret it. She teaches them to create their own moves, to have respect for others. I've seen tremendous growth in my son, not only for dance but confidence and leadership as he helps new dancers. This post is to raise community awareness on the studio owner and its affiliate's dangerous disinterest in creating a safe space. At an event hosted at Danzversity, I saw a predator whose inappropriate, repeated sexual behaviors had made my friend, Neha M., feel unsafe while they were dating. Discomforted, I raised concern to the event organizer and studio owner and requested that they ban the individual from the space. The two did not take action on the spot as they feared "retaliation and liability," but told me they'd take action moving forward. In contrary, they got back to me ~2 weeks later saying that there are things that they "can and cannot do due to confidential legal reasons" (which I think is bullshit because business owners have the right to refuse service with a few exceptions, and this isn't one of them). When probed further, the event organizer basically said words are not good enough and he needs to see a police report or a restraining order to believe it. I understood this as a declination to take action, and PEACEFULLY criticized them and told them I will no longer be attending the studio. My friends and I started whistleblowing on their apparent disinterest in creating safe spaces, to which the event organizer responded by threatening baseless lawsuits and blackmailing our employers with false accusations of "defamation" and "harassment". They eventually filed a FALSE police report against me and my friend (both BIPOC womxn) for "harassment," even though we've never threatened or repeatedly contacted them and haven't spoken to them in months. I believe it is a bare-minimum for a dance studio, or any space, to strive for safety and inclusivity; other studios and many others in the dance community will agree with me on this. It's extremely disheartening to not be heard after advocating for the safety, comfort, and well-being of the community and my own; and for that to come from another woman of color - the owner of the studio who preaches inclusivity and diversity - leaves me at a loss of words. It is inherently non-inclusive to ignore a request to create a safe space for womxn, a request that they had capacity to fulfill. It shows that they know their wrongs but would rather cover it up using scare tactics instead of rectifying, because bringing community attention on their inaction has caused them to react so irrationally as to file a false police report against womxn of color; furthermore, this is an inherently violence-provoking behavior because, historically, the police has not sided with BIPOC womxn. To Danzversity, please do better; and I encourage you to hold yourselves accountable and rectify your mistakes even though it is very late. read more

New dance studio in town specializing in Latin, Jamaican, hip-hop andddd oldies?! Sounds too good to actually be true? I thought so too so I had to check it out for myself. Myself, I'm definitely a novice when it comes to dancing (not if you count sloppy alcohol fueled club dancing) so my main concern is making sure the dancing is easy enough to comprehend and feeling welcomed and not judged by my soccer mom-esqe like moves. To my surprise, this place lives up to the hype! The instructors are all so welcoming and sweet and FUN! You don't feel any pressure regardless of your dance expertise either. It's also worth mentioning that the studio is easily one of the more spacious spots I've seen in Austin, really clean and just adorable. Lots of personality. I took the Latin class with Jaymie on Monday and the Jamaican class on Tuesday with Matt and really enjoyed both. Both my classes were even free too since it was my first time here. DOES IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT?! Next on my list is to check out oldies but groovies on Thursday with Ursula - met her during the classes, so sweet! I realized today it was far past time for me to do a review of a place I've been going once a week for almost a year. As an adult, I'd been wanting to get back into dancing and a friend had been raving about this place where she was learning hip hop. As an out of practice and a little bit out of shape person I was a bit nervous. (I went to another studio's beginning hip hop class and learned I was WAY out of my depth.) Well, right when I walked in the door I felt calmer as even the art on their walls is inclusive. Hassan teaches most of the hip hop classes and he's a great teacher who breaks all the moves down into manageable pieces. By the end of the class you've got a routine down! Now I've taken jazz and house classes as well. It's a really supportive environment where you're never made to feel not good enough, and everyone has high fives for each other after the class. Now this my once a week break where I get out of my brain. This year I plan on delving into some of the more advanced and latin options as well. Recommend! read more

This is the place to be in austin if you like to dance. My family comes here regularly for a while. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating.
