I love dancing but rarely go and definitely need to brush up on my steps and learn some new ones. I signed up for several classes with their special offer to new members: Swing II, Country Western Swing II, and Lindy Hop II. Going to three classes a week is a lot, but I've enjoyed them immensely. This is getting me back out on the Dance Floor without having to go to a nightclub, and I'm learning so much! The instructors I've had are excellent, and the facility is nice and clean with beautiful hardwood floors. Other students have been very welcoming and friendly as well. Owls can stay on the dance floor all night, doing the hooooola. I came here for some dance lessons for my daughter in a private lesson, we loved it! I saw other dancers there working on their routines and I have to admit it makes me want to go dance. The facility is big and spacious. There is a sitting area if you are not a dancer and you just want to watch but I know we are all better than just people who hold up the wall right? The sign on the front of the building is pretty big and once you get inside you won't have a hard time finding the dance studio. There will be plenty of parking for you in front and I'm also told that there are social dance events here, I will come back and try those out. read more

I hate writing bad reviews. But I don't have a choice. I had a problem with Go Dance and I tried to resolve it with them but got nowhere. My girl and I paid for a private dance package that was not cheap. We never got all the lessons we paid for. Every time I tried to schedule with the instructor he would not respond. We tried contacting the studio by email and they never responded. We thought maybe the instructor had left, but we went for an open house and he was there. I feel that we were ripped off and we are so disappointed. We were actually going to just buy another package but there is no chance I would ever use them again now. read more

Ridiculously well-done dance studio. Multiple rooms of various sizes with the main room being large enough to fit hundreds of people with enough A/C to keep the place cool; I've never seen any venue able to keep temperature like this place. It can be a bit hard to find as it's nestled in a small mall. Find the Guitar Center and enter the mall entrance adjacent to that and walk through until you see it. Parking is plentiful with a bus stop nearby. Only complaint is that I wish it was a bit closer to central Austin. Bathrooms: Clean, functional, and reasonably spacious. read more

I figured that (almost) 2 years later it was only fitting that I update my review. I'm still taking lessons at GoDance and it's become an extremely important part of my life. My mental/physical health has improved with reduced social anxiety and I've lost approximately 40lbs so far since I started dancing. David Miller is still my main instructor and I truly cannot recommend him highly enough. He helped me to rediscover my love of the performing arts and has been there on my journey every step of the way with incredible patience since dance is not something that has or will ever come naturally to me but he provided the encouragement I needed to stick with it and not give up. I now compete in Pro-Am with him, line dance with him coaching me, and he's coaching my Army buddy and I so we can compete together next year. Aside from David, the best asset the studio has is the community. It is incredibly supportive and I've made many friends there, which is a major accomplishment for someone as introverted as I am. If you're reading this review and thinking of trying something new for New Years like I did at the beginning of 2018, definitely do it! I came here for the social dance on Sunday ($5 for the social dance or $15 if you want to instructional beginning dance). The venue is awesome with three separate dance areas. They provided some free alcoholic beverages towards the beginning and snacks and cookies too. I was brand new so I did the first half of the instructional class and had a great time. Two instructors did a great job keeping everyone engaged and explaining the steps. The main room has a large dance floor and there was no instruction but everyone was friendly and when I was dancing with people they easily explained the steps. Everyone was pretty good or a regular so it was a little intimidating I give it four stars solely because when I came in the front registration was rather confusing and the girls did not explain pricing, future visits, etc. I had to seek out a training and ask about classes and how the weekly social dance on Sunday evenings work. This place has great instructors, a really friendly community, a nice dance floor, classes that go at a good pace with a well thought out curriculum, etc., but that's not what stands out to me. The thing I find really amazing is how they get so many of the tiny details right. They really care about providing a good experience. For example, this place has a great HVAC system. If this is the only dance studio you've been to, you probably won't notice, but if you've been to dances or classes hosted at other studios in Austin, you'll notice that this is the only partner dance studio space (that I know of) in town where you don't end up soaked in sweat when the room is packed. For some reason, the other partner dance studio spaces skimp on the AC, so things get overheated even when you're attending a dance on a winter evening when it's 30 degrees outside. You can imagine what it's like on a hot summer day in those places. Not fun. Another thing you might take for granted if you've only taken classes at Go Dance is that classes start and end on time. This doesn't seem like rocket science, but I guess it's harder than it looks since this was the only studio we tried that could make that happen on a regular basis. Another detail-example is how on top of things the staff are. For a long time, I wondered how it is that everyone I talked to on the staff is so effective. And thens someone forwarded me a job post for their receptionist positions. It had a pretty long list of expected tasks, one of which was the ability to call customers by name after being on the job for X days. Except for the dances, I never really came in regularly, so I always thought it was some kind of amazing coincidence that the staff knew who I was. Nope! Knowing who's coming through the door and being friendly is literally part of the job description. Yet another similar detail is how on top of partner rotation the instructors are. Just like at any other dance studio in town, you have the option of sticking with one partner or getting in the rotation. But at literally every other place we tried, instructors would sometimes get distracted and not have people rotate for 15 or 30 minutes at a time. That can be ok, but it kinda sucks if you're stuck with someone who has bad breath or who keeps stepping on your toes or whatever. I'm not sure why Go Dance is different, but this literally never happened to us here. Like everything else at Go Dance, partner rotation runs like clockwork. Classes and lessons here are a bit more expensive than other places in Austin. When my girlfriend and I were looking for places to take dance classes, we tried out other places because the sticker prices were lower and we thought we'd get a better deal. But when you consider everything you get for the price, Go Dance is the best deal in town. My one complaint is that they only teach dance classes and don't have any classes on how to run a business because, as someone who sometimes considers creating a startup, I think a lot about what makes business tick and I would love to learn how this place is able to operate so effectively. read more

I decided to try something completely out of my comfort zone and signed up for dance lessons. I feel incredibly lucky to have picked Sarah as my dance instructor. She's an amazing human being and so patient and helpful for every level of student. I started out learning two step, bachata, and salsa. I wasn't crazy about two step, but I started doing swing instead. Took a couple of group classes and the other instructors are great as well. Susan was especially sweet and thoughtful when I would give myself a hard time. Impressed when people pick up on little cues in a large class. I personally have a hard time getting new things down in the group classes, but I would follow up with Sarah if I had a tough time and get things corrected. Sometimes it is difficult dancing with a dozen different partners and getting consistent, but I guess that's a good lesson in itself. Social dancing was a bit overwhelming the first time, but I can only imagine it gets easier with repetition. There are a lot of talented students and staff here. Definitely recommend the studio even if you're entirely new. read more

My husband and I tried the month of unlimited lessons a few months before our wedding and enjoyed learning some basic dance steps. However, we decided that we wanted something choreographed for our reception and worked with Hilary to bring our vision to fruition. Hilary was fantastic! She listened to us, gave great advice and helped us develop a dance that we loved showing off to our friends and family. We especially enjoyed her energetic and bubbly personality - she was just a delight! The lady at the front desk was just as delightful and made us feel welcomed during each visit. The studio is also bright, clean and cheery and a better aesthetic than some other studios we had visited. I would recommend scheduling a consultation if you are interested in learning to dance or preparing for your first wedding dance. We are glad we choose Go Dance as it was a fun experience leading up to our wedding. Advice: Don't wait till the last minute like we did! Tommy Schwegmann is a MIRACLE WORKER. As a non-dancer who dislikes dance but loves his daughter, I signed up for the wedding Father-Daughter dance package. My daughter wanted the kind of dance seen on YouTube (start slow and eventually go wild). Our dance was a medley of 3 songs starting with tame (My Girl), then more energy (Do You Love Me) and then over the top with Usher's "Yeah." He mixed the songs and designed the choreography. In addition to being a great guy, Tommy is patient and endured my struggling to learn basic and then more advanced routines. As a rhythmically challenged senior, he revised a part of the routine that I simply could not do. Our Father-Daughter dance at the reception dinner was met with THUNDEROUS cheers and clapping (by an otherwise reserved group) - too many guests to count said it was the best Father - Daughter dance they had seen. Dads - even if you hate dancing, these lessons are a great way to spend time with your daughter before the wedding. Your daughter will LOVE it. Thanks to Tommy, my daughter told me repeatedly we "crushed it," and she's right - we did. From sheer terror to exhilaration, I can't recommend Tommy strongly enough. read more

I was referred to Go Dance by a dear friend of mine and it did not disappoint! David Abril was a dream to work with and brought our dance to life! My now husband and I took wedding dance lessons for our wedding in May and it came out terrific!!! We learned a tango! Neither of us has any prior dance or choreography knowledge and David made it so easy for us! My husband (fiance at the time) and I took 4 dance lessons here before our February wedding. Our instructor was Melissa and she was awesome! She listened to the song we'd picked out and then suggested 4 different dances that would work with the music. She taught us basic and more advanced turns and even a dip for the end! She had our song edited so it was the perfect length and emailed it to us so we had it for our big day. We're not usually dancers, which is why we thought it would be a good idea to seek some help so that our first dance at our wedding wasn't an awkward middle school sway. We love, love, love Go Dance! Any place that could actually convince me - twice! - to participate in a public dance exhibition has to be pretty special. Go Dance feels like a big family where some of the family are really talented dancers and instructors. Many of the students gather and socialize before and after lessons, as part of dance teams, and during the dances hosted here. It is just a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, for people of all ages and skill levels. Over the past 2.5 years, I've watched the staff work with just about everybody in a professional and encouraging way. Hilary Carlson is terrific as a private instructor. She's thoughtful, energetic, funny, encouraging and extremely talented. She has had her hands full dealing with someone (that would be me) with zero talent, and helping me get confident about ballroom dancing. When we needed to prepare for our daughter's wedding, she moved us right into Two Step without missing a beat (bada-dum). I was actually stunned when she asked us to dance in the smooth medley in the Go Dance showcase after only 5 months of lessons, but Hilary pulled together 3 routines and got us thru the event. And we have the pictures to prove it! Whenever I have questions, or problems, or just need a kick in the pants, Hilary comes up with some creative options that saves the night. I signed us up for the group dance and it was actually a lot of fun. I didn't expect that we would switch up with other partners, and I apologized profusely for my two left feet, but they were all very gracious. Every night, yes every, the Austin dance obsessed spill into this Austin original. Located at Northcross mall (which makes me wonder what will happen when the "urban Wal-Mart" takes over) this place has been teaching the classes and blaring the tunes for a few years now. Things I like - A large amount of people - Every different kind of dance, come at 6, you can learn cha-cha, and hour later people are waltzing, lots of choices. - They have workshops some weekends to learn even more skills. - They have parties (I've never been but heard they are cool) with dance music and themes a coupla times a month. - The instructors are friendly and well trained. (And watching them dance themselves is quite intimidating!) Things I don't like - They repeat the same dance moves over and over. Come to a salsa class, you will only have learned one move (and several variations) by the end of the month. Come to multiple classes a week- they are all learning the same move. - You don't really get to meet anyone individually, too many folks. - The price is really pretty out there. People are spending over a hundred a month on classes. If I were you, I would check out Go Dance's free classes at the beginning of the month and see if it's for you. The repetition of moves usually works quite well for some people, and bores the heck out of others. So got some extra money to spend? Why don't you take another option and buy an individual class card, or two, or 8 :) Learn some moves and then take it to the clubs where the dance really goes down. read more

Thought I'd take a minute and write up some of our experiences with Go Dance over in Northcross Mall. Karen and I have been going there for months now and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Here's some quick observations. Starting off at Go Dance usually means an introductory month package, which includes unlimited group classes and a couple of private lessons. When we started, we just focused on a handful of classes and decided we'd learn a few dances at a time. It's always funny when you see the glazed eye look of some new people when they fully embrace the "all you can dance!" in one month - learning way too many dance steps in way too short a time where everything starts blurring together. But the advantage is you can quickly and easily try out a number of different dances and figure out what you're interested in. The breadth of the classes available is amazing. Our starting experience was I think fairly typical - although we're hardly experts in this. The first lessons focused on resetting the expectations of couples. In dancing, the man is supposed to lead and the woman learns to key off of subtle signals and body postures and react/follow his lead. Months later, we're still having issues with this in a fun way. I've found the better way of picturing this is: I'm simply in the process of learning to lead the steps and moves that she wants me to dance. Classes start with Level 1. Level 1 spans two months - 4 weeks each month - starting the first week of each month. Level 1 teaches the basic steps, enough to get comfortable with the steps, posture, frame, and approach. There is a lot of repetition in Level 1 - which is nice since it gives you a chance to figure out the steps. The classes are interesting with respect to rotating partners. In some of the Level 1 classes, most everyone rotates partners. In other classes, some or many of the couples "aren't quite ready to rotate" (chuckling). In our experience, we've found we learn a lot faster rotating partners. You get a broad range of styles and you have a chance to experiment without annoying your partner. For what it's worth, there are usually quite a few singles in each class... and rotating keeps people moving around. Level 2 is a fun class. Everyone knows the basics and is focusing on learning the steps. There appears to be enough moves in each dance realm to keep you busy for months, probably even a year or two (we're still less than a year there). Each week you're learning a new move, building on previous moves over the course of the month, so by the end of the month you've learned a fairly impressive (at least for us!) sequence. We do two classes a week and have concluded that we really benefit from a private lesson each week to "clarify" everything we learned. It works for us. We've learned basic swing. We've learned Texas Two-Step and when we were confident with that we started going to Graham Central Station for country dancing on Friday nights. We promptly discovered that 80% of the dances they are playing are at a rhythm geared for a different country step called Triple Two Step (step step triple-step triple-step). So now we're learning Triple Two-Step... The teachers at Go Dance have all been wonderful. They're very receptive and focus on level-appropriate details. As we learn more, they add more of the details to keep us challenged (and some seem to take great delight in that..). We usually end up laughing with our teachers for half the lesson as we try to mimic the "right" way to do things. The staff at Go Dance are a lot of fun. They always greet everyone warmly. We recently arranged for a group of friends to come out to Go Dance for a private party for two hours where the group learned the basics of Two-Step and then Swing. We brought in drinks and appetizers and had a really good time. It's something we'd love to do again - probably for a longer period just to relax and enjoy an evening. There are actually many more aspects which could be written about. The bottom line we've both said many times is we wish we had started dance lessons 20 years ago before our girls grew up and moved off to college. We both wholeheartedly recommend the Go Dance studio as a great place to learn to dance. read more

It includes: 3 50 minute private lessons unlimited group classes for one session free entrance to newcomer nights (Sundays) For a single- $139 For a couple- $199 The group classes build on each other so it's great if you keep up with the lessons. They have a schedule that changes each session (I assume) and they offer a lot of different types of dance. Monday- Friday they usually have different classes offered for 1 hour each from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. On the weekends they usually start around 1 or 2 p.m. Anyway, whether you want to do something with a couple or by yourself, this place is great and comfortable. We had Shantil for our private lessons and she was great. It's also a great present to give!!! I got the New Student Special for my birthday. :) read more

If you want to learn how to (partner) dance, this should be one of the first places you try out. They offer dance lessons weeknights and weekend afternoons in 15 or so types of dances and at different skill levels. The quality of the teachers, the nice studio, and the steady flow of students are generally unmatched at other places. The most popular classes are offered multiple times each week. There are negatives. It's not cheap. While you can pay by the class, most people sign up for unlimited monthly classes. You feel somewhat obligated to try out more than one kind of dance. It takes a little practice to shift gears... Also, the male/female ratio can be very skewed. Obviously it's not much fun to dance without a partner. The beauty of the lessons is that most people rotate partners every few minutes to practice with different people. With an uneven ratio, though, you can be partnerless quite a lot. Even if you bring a partner, that only helps if you choose not to rotate, which I don't recommend. I'm not quite sure what the studio could do to fix this, but it's something to be aware of. In addition, keep in mind that your partners will span the spectrum in terms of age, background, and ability. That said, they excel at teaching you how to dance. You can sign up by yourself and it won't be at all intimidating. It's fun, well organized, and conveniently scheduled. It can be social, as well. If you want to learn how to dance Salsa, Swing, Two Step, or similar dances, you definitely want to at least attend the free monthly open house to get a feel for this studio. read more

Last week I became the test dummy for helping a friend of mine learn his wedding dance (his fiance lives out of the country). The studio was very large, clean, and well maintained. Sarah was our instructor and she was an absolute delight. Extremely patient, encouraging, and engaged every moment of our lesson. I did not feel for one moment that she was fake nor disinterested. You can tell she really loves her job! There were two other pairs of instructors and clients also learning their own choreography, but this never posed a problem; no group got in each other's way, the music was switched fairly, and the room was wide enough to not feel cramped. WARNING: When walking in this building it smells like a nasty bathroom that has not been clean. The building is clean, but the smell...not so much My hubby surprised me, taking me to try out "line dancing." I mean I have to learn something besides bachata and twerking right? LOL We walked into Go dance and filled out the form and waited for our private lesson. As we waited, we watched other dancers in their own zones and some being taught by the instructors. It was our turn and Sam was our instructor. We told him we wanted to learn line dancing although he insisted he see our bachata first. Ummm sure. I mean I love to dance, especially bachata. As soon as we were done learning other things that entails bachata, I found out that there are 3 types of bachata, we are definitely not ballroom bachata but it was a nice to know that. Who knew? We ended up dancing bachata the whole time. I loved it! Sam is awesome and I definitely want to see him again. I learned other steps and had fun, def a sign to go back. They offer other classes and group classes as well. I am looking into it. The only downside I didn't like was that I wish it was more than 40 minutes long. I've been coming to Go Dance several times a week for close to a year now. I can't say enough good things about this place. Go Dance provides a one-stop shop, which is *really* nice for new dancers. Your first social dance is a lot less stressful when you're doing it with students you already know from group class. The staff are friendly and capable. They'll help you with any questions or problems you may have, from where to grab a bite to eat nearby to scheduling lessons to fitting some dance shoes. The space itself is well designed and well maintained. There are the big things, like a sound system that projects onto the dance floor and not into the social space. The floors themselves are sprung to protect your knees. The four dance floors meet the needs of different contexts, from group classes to social dances to working on choreography one-on-one with an instructor. And there are the small things, like cubbies to put your street shoes, and mints and hand sanitizer in every room. The instructors are amazing. Without exception, they're friendly and helpful, great dancers, and great teachers. The last two don't have to go together, but they do at Go Dance. The students are great, as well. A happy, friendly, supportive bunch. You'll never have to worry about finding a dance partner at the Sunday Socials or the outings to Dallas. I've used the word "friendly" quite a few times, but that is perhaps the best word to describe Go Dance. If you like happiness, you should come. read more

I'm so not a dancer, and to be honest, I'm not sure how I got the idea in my head that I should take dance lessons--but I'm glad I did. I've taken beginning two-step, and I'm currently in intermediate tango and intermediate west-coast swing and I'm in love. You definitely have to be patient--they start with the very basics (thankfully), and build slowly from there so that you have a good understanding before you start getting fancy. The instructors are friendly and easy to follow, and they will go as slowly as you need them to. I always feel very comfortable asking for help and for clarification. The other dancers there are a fairly friendly and professional bunch. As a (formerly) non-dancer, I was a little nervous about dancing with (and hence touching) a bunch of strangers, but you won't give it a second thought after the first lesson or two. Currently, tango is my main squeeze and I absolutely love it. Out of the three dances I've taken, this is the dance that I most quickly picked up and feel like I can go out and dance reasonably in public. If you want to learn social dancing, give Go Dance a try. I live in south Austin and trekked north to Go Dance several times a week for a few months because I loved it so much. Now I'm a confident salsa dancer with many new friends and acquaintances that I met here. I love that wherever there is salsa music playing--be it a club, live music event, or even a house party--I run into someone I know from class. I come here for the Friday night blues dances that the Blues Association of Austin hosts at Go Dance, and the venue is exactly what you want in a dance studio--open space, variable lighting, and great sound system. If you want to learn how to cut a rug, look no further--Go Dance and its instructors are well-known around Austin for their expertise and wide offering of dance styles. I stopped by Go Dance for a few free lessons (Country Waltz and Two Step with James) they were giving on Austin's "Free Day of Dance" and found everyone there to be very personable. No judgement on my two left feet or who your partner is and the extra instructors step in to be either a leader or a follower where necessary. I think I'll be back for some group lessons or other newcomer events. read more

Went as a family for a group class of Two Step. Was a huge group of people!!! It was nice to know I'm not the only white girl who can't dance!!! The instructor knew how to handle the crowd, can't wait to go back again and see how bad I can smash my hubbies feet some more. I hope I can figure this out during this 4 week class, I need some serious help! We've been invited to many things and it all seems to be a popular thing this dancing deal!!! But I got me some boots and I'm gona figure it out!!! Went to a hall for a birthday party and I had to leave before someone made me dance! There were 8 year old boys acting like they know it all, but they did!!!!! This makes me furious at my parents! For never teaching me how to do this!!! But then I guess two steppin in Oregon wasn't such a big thing!!! Our 1st class was free but you can buy packages of 4 classes or more. It's really quit reasonable!! EVERYTHING WAS AWESOME. Scheduling, flexibility, patience, dance teaching, customization, etc. Tommy helped us create a BEAUTIFUL dance that is STILL being talked about. Neither one of us is a pro dancer, so it was definitely out of our comfort zone, but BOY did he make us look good. I felt the price was totally reasonable for the amount we got, and the process of dancing together was honestly a great stress reliever during the planning process. I'd come in all stressed out, and after 45 minutes of being held and gazing into my then fiance's eyes was the greatest relaxation of all. And we continue to do the dance together, even on our honeymoon. We have been together 8 years and didn't really have a song, but now we do! Thanks GoDance North and Tommy!!!! read more

I am very impressed with Go Dance. They have great specials and groupons. The classes are well organized and fun. The studios are bright, clean, and spacious. Everyone is extremely friendly. I really love that they play fun, current music during the versatile classes like West Coast Swing. You'll leave with lots of endorphins, I promise. We tried a couple of studios and felt that Go Dance was definitely the winner. Although the classes rotate through partners, there are quite a few couples who just stay together the whole class (which is what we do). read more

I love Go Dance! Great teachers, fun students. I do both group classes and private lessons (when we're not in quarantine for Covid-19). I like the class schedule of 45 minute classes, and the pricing that makes it a good deal to take unlimited classes for the month. Also I love the Sunday Funday social dances. I'm amazed that we don't have to bring a partner, but the total number of men and women is about equal. We rotate partners every few minutes and dance with a lot of people. Anyone can learn to lead or follow or both, and a good number of students do learn both. I dance at the north and south locations, and have made a lot of good friends at both. read more
