I recently visited Danke for lunch in the Sterling Food Hall in Chicago's Loop. The Sterling Food Hall has many good food stalls and this one is one of the better ones. First, they have a great food stall. Unlike many of the food stalls, they have their bar and seating. It was nice to grab my food and be able to sit down right away without having to go search for a table. Second, the food is delicious. I was told by the staff that they make all their bread in house, brine their pork belly in house and get fresh and local meats and ingredients. I tried three sandwiches, the Italian, the secret sandwich and the inglorious batard. All do the sandwiches were good, but the inglorious batard was may favorite. The Italian was might brighter than other Italian sandwiches I've had. Third, the service is great. The staff was friendly and my food came out super fast. This is a must visit sandwich shop in Chicago.

    Smoked Turkey

The menu is clearly visible and is the same as it is online. When I arrived the first time, it was before noon and I had no wait. Second time I went on a Friday at 12:15 and only one person in front of me. Both times, the employee who took my order was friendly and prompt. The food was prepared much faster than I'd expect. There are enough seats that it'd be easy to get a table and dine in. However, I took mine back to my desk. The bread is hearty and has a slight crispiness on the very outside but then dense and chewy and flavorful. All ingredients are top quality. The turkey shines and the cheese is flavorful enough to compliment the smokiness of the turkey without being overshadowed by it. The aioli is a lovely addition and is light enough to not overwhelm the rest of the flavors. It's a bit much for me for a lunch but it's so delicious that I've haven't had the will power to save half of it and instead gobble the whole thing at once.

Get some German and good sandwiches from this place in Revival Food Hall. It also has options for vegans. Danke is best known for sandwiches and deli items. Must be good because it was one of the original tenants. The food has pretty good flavor for something in a food hall, and isn't like canned or bargain like stuff. A place to hang around is at the bar. It has some overpriced cocktails. The food is the main thing. Okay prices on the food especially for around here. The Chickpea Salad is one of the best sides. It's about $6 for a big portion and it's filling. The Veg is the vegan sandwich option. It's about $10 and comes with a side, with salads among the choices. This has arugula, braised mushrooms, eggplant, cauliflower purée, sun dried tomatoes, and zucchini. Big sandwich and is a lot for the cost This seems like a good deal to be honest. Convenient to get to if downtown. It's mainly for people who work around here. They're closed weekends.

Best tomato soup in the area! The ingredients in the sandwich are fresh, but for the price, I do wish the bread was toasted and a lot softer. It was a pretty quick lunch (no lines). The cashier was so patient & willing to ask questions. This is inside a food hall: be mindful that it is very loud and packed during lunchtime but there are no people during dinnertime. Might go back to try their charcuterie boards with their wine.

If you're looking for a good sandwich while at Revival Food Hall, Danke is a great choice. Everyone working there was really nice and friendly, and the menu had a lot of tasty options. We only got a grilled cheese sandwich since we were sampling from a bunch of different vendors, but it was delicious, both with and without the pickles (got them on the side instead of on it, since my kid is anti-pickles). Hoping to try more on another visit!

    Secret sandwich

I'm not sure why this place only has 3.5 stars. I thought their secret sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The ingredients are very creative and very tasty. The chips and soda they have are also yummy. It was fairly priced for Chicago and the service was great. This shop is very casual as it is located in a food hall.

    Secret Sandwich

The Secret Sandwich has the perfect resume! It confidently flaunts its schweinebauch and duck liver. Loaded with fatty meats and a touch of cheese. Topping off its qualifications as a Euro inspired sandwich with a chewy, rustic baguette. Perhaps it was too much of a good thing...Gasp! I know...I heard it too! After eating half of the sandwich, I wasn't quite full but certainly begging for something else. I would recommend sharing this with someone and pairing it with a side of salad or soup or maybe a beer... The baguette was deliciously chewy! And they sell just the baguette for $3! I'll definitely be back for that!

Danke is located in the Revival Food Hall and they are one of the OGs at the food hall when it opened some years ago (still fairly new). I ordered online for pickup, which has been great and I think fairly new to Revival Food Hall as I just noticed it two weeks ago. Seating is so hard to find in the food hall because it is so busy! Food was ready on time and I headed back to the office (10-min walk). I ordered the Grilled Cheese (rated as one of the best grilled cheeses in Chicago) (RIP Fat Shallot who moved out of Revival, who also has a great grilled cheese), Roasted Tomato Soup, and Smoked Turkey. Hey don't judge, I was carb loading for my 10 mile run the next day with my running group haha. I've had both sandwiches before and they are still both excellent! The Grilled Cheese actually traveled decently well as the sourdough bread was still toasty (a little rough given the sourdough bread), but a little moist and totally expected given the 10-min walk. The cheese was still somewhat melted and the flavor is to die for! The Smoked Turkey was insanely fresh and full of flavor! I love their mustard aioli (dijon based)! The baguette is insanely good and I think it almost tastes like ciabatta bread just in a baguette. Arugula was fresh. The Roasted Tomato soup was ok to good as it was lukewarm so it didn't travel well. It was packed with flavor, but it had a small kick of spiciness! I didn't expect it to have a kick, but it was definitely noticeable. Overall, Danke is a great place to grab lunch! Good luck finding a seat at Revival as it's always packed (my luck is terrible and usually have to settle for standing room only) as there are so many great options! Prices is cheap for the Loop ($10-$11/sandwich) and portion sizes are good. I want to try their Secret Sandwich sometime as I have never had it because the Grilled Cheese and Smoked Turkey are sooooo good! Please note that I had to walk 10 minutes back to my office so the food would have been even better dining at Revival!

The soup was different from the standard pasta fagioli that I have had which seemed to be a cream based maybe cheese in it and beans no beef. But it was still good. I added a pinch of salt The pizza looked delicious as did the ice cream. I would have loved to try a beef as I haven't been here since I was a kid. Half of a large sandwich and I was stuffed. Leaving at about lunch time, I opened my Yelp app to see what was nearby. The top spouses ad (2.7 miles away) was Ricobene's. I really wasn't aware they were even around anymore. So, for nostalgic purposes, I decided to go there. Had my mother and aunt in tow, and we were all very pleased. The breaded steak, while still maybe not the greatest thing since sliced bread, was a nice blast from the past that I really enjoyed. Would I go there again? Surely. If I were 2.7 miles away (though uncle's been released and is back home doing fine). Do wanna try their Chicken Vesuvio again one day. But 22 miles each way just for that, not. Quick friendly service, and way cleaner than most hot dog joints and beef stands out my way. Few things make me miss Chicago, but this is one of them.

Out of the sandwiches I tried, the gardinera pairs the best with the Drunken Chicken sandwich. I'm unsure if my hunger pangs were amplifying my experience, but this sandwich was something of legends... The ingredients combo into something a little too unfair to not be distributed to the rest of America. The food really feels special when you have it late night after a really long day of fun. All good and able to split into 2 meals and they save well. As mentioned, this spot is on repeat for me and haven't disliked anything. The pizza is ok but I wouldn't choose it as my pizza spot. We were fortunate enough to be having dinner at an Italian restaurant in the same block, and I saw that they were open until midnight. I decided to grab a grinder and a couple of cannoli after dinner to consume the next day for lunch. They utilize a walk-up window for their later hours. I believe I mentioned during ordering that we "do not get grinders like this in Cali" and they were kind enough to let us indoors (surely knowing this weather was nearly "Antarctic penguin cold" for us) while our order was being finished. I saw various jars of giardiniera and muffuletta and could not resist buying a couple. Our store associate kindly wrapped them well in plastic wrap to ensure safe travel back to Cali. Our sandwich maker was a cool guy as well and conversational with us. They even gave us some brief family history on the place. Unfortunately, without my knowledge the wife set us up with an Uber while waiting so we had to dash and run to make our next stop before their closing time. "Foodies are as foodies do"... The FOOD review: CANNOLI w/cherries: -- it appears they use Amarena Bologna cherries which are so much better tasting than the standard maraschino bright red ones. I prefer morello cherries or these when using them in cannoli pie or on Chicago style or ricotta cheesecake. -- cheese tastes of cow's milk ricotta and is well strained so not watery -- lightly sweet is appreciated as it should be...no fake Italian sugar bomb with chocolate sauce and whipped cream like they do in Cali sometimes -- smaller portion size but value is good -- smoother textured than grainy -- shell is light colored and pretty solid -- up to a moderate dusting of powdered sugar on exterior -- appears freshly filled as there is no soggy shell syndrome whatsoever, crunchy and firm (I ate one two days later and it still had a firm shell) -- I have about 8 different cannoli pie recipes I created and make for friends, family and colleagues now and then. I transitioned to pie ages ago because there are so many bad shells and a graham cracker crust is always legit and easy to find. -- IMHO this is a much better and truer cannoli rendition than what you will find at D'Amato's Bakery in Chicago RATING = A "MR. G SPECIALTY GRINDER": -- I briefly considered "The Italian" or asking for a combo of the two but this stood out so I stuck with it -- I requested it "wet" as I hate anything dry (bread, meat etc.) and prefer extra "juice" (red wine vinegar, EVO) -- bread is not thick nor thin but just right with great texture, taste and freshness -- loved all the flavors and additions -- not a moose overloaded grinder but just right for those out of their twenties who do not need "sandie leftovers for days" -- good value here too RATING = A+ They even sell some appealing looking BLOOD ORANGE (and other flavors) sorbet. I definitely recommend them for a super hospitable Italiano experience with great eats. They even made the "Top Sandwich joints" in America list by Food & Wine magazine per associate and a quick Internet search.

They have won several awards for their sandwiches and are said to have the best Italian Beef in Chicago. With all this being said, this was certainly a must eat on my trip! Their menu consists of their famous Italian beef, along with Chicago dogs, burgers, sausage sandwiches, chicken, and fries. There is definitely something for everyone here. The inside is casual and reminiscent of a fast food eatery. Really liked the yellow accents throughout the restaurant. I will also note that it was extremely clean inside, which is always appreciated. Ordering is simple and they will call your ticket number when your food is ready. All the food is served made to order and very fresh and doesn't take too long to come out! I ordered the Regular Beef, wet, with both hot and spicy peppers per the workers suggestion. Ordering the sandwich wet simply means the bread is dunked in the gravy/aus jus. If you want the real deal, this is how you order it. The peppers are optional as well, but complete the sandwich. The sandwich consists of their famous Italian beef roasted and sliced, served on freshly baked French bread. I can see why this sandwich is so highly regarded. The Italian beef that is made in house each day is tender, flavorful, and just perfect! It isn't chewy or tough either. The sweet and spicy peppers paired nicely with the savory beef. And the fresh French bread covered in the gravy--phenomenal! The gravy adds a lot of flavor to the sandwich. You do have to eat it quickly, otherwise the bread will fall apart, oh but it is so worth it. I got fries with a side of cheese sauce to go with the sandwich. By far some of the best fries I've had. Not super crispy, but not soggy either, the texture was just right. They were salted perfectly and dipping them in their velvety cheese sauce was a treat! A regular sub is roughly 6 inches and quite filling. The sandwiches are stuffed with ample amounts of beef. The price is also excellent considering how much you get. Overall, I would say Al's Beef lived up to all its praise. My sandwich was very memorable and was like nothing I'd had before. Everything is so fresh, between their beef, bread, and fries, it is all made in house. This isn't just some fast food spot, it is an institution. I was impressed with everything I ordered, especially the fries. They take a lot of pride in what they serve. This is evident in their customer service.
