I did not realize just what I was missing in a salon and stylist until I switched to Danka Panka. When I stopped by one morning to get a feel for the place, Dan, the owner, welcomed me warmly and took time to actually *listen* to my concerns. He then arranged a consult with Katrina the next day. Wow, did I hit the jackpot of stylists! Katrina first gave me a perfect blunt cut to my long, tired hair, and we talked at length about the color game-plan. The next week I came back for a fairly complex color session for which Katrina thoughtfully and meticulously prepared, and ultimately executed flawlessly. I have never been more at ease while getting color, or felt this good about my hair. Katrina is a highly skilled colorist and consummate professional, not to mention just wonderful to be around. Dan and Katrina are amazing. I've been coming here for more than four years and this place is a gem. I am very particular about my long, straight, thick hair and have been to many high end salons int he city who did not live up to my standards. For some reason, these salons always want to razor cut my hair, I needed someone who specialized in cutting with scissors and scissors only. I have donated my hair twice, first time 15 inches and most recently 12 inches. They made me feel completely at ease. There was only one time when the cut was not working, I call Dan and he was quick to fix the problem. Katrina recently cut my hair, cutting 12 inches off, 3 inches below the collar bone, she layered it, slightly longer in the front and shorter, more blunt cut in the back. I went to Danka Panka for the first time a few days ago and I can't say enough good things about it. Everyone was super friendly and helpful... not to mention that my hair looks better than it ever has in my life. I have very fine, limp hair, and I have been trying to force it to be long (with extensions etc.) for far too long. I finally got sick of it, and I asked Dan to cut it short and just make it look good... and boy did he ever! I was terrified, but it was the best decision I could have made. It looks so thick and full now... not to mention pretty damn hot. Jocelyn also did an awesome job on the color, I love it! I have gotten so many compliments on my hair in the last few days. After Jocelyn cut and colored my hair for the first time, I knew I would never see another stylist in New York! My hair is thin and has a fine texture, so I try to choose my hair stylist wisely. Jocelyn did a great job listening to my expectations and then adding creative touches. The highlights definitely warmed up my natural color, and the cut is very stylish. I have been coming to Danka Panka regularly for more than two years. When I first discovered this gem, I'll admit I half expected the kind of frosty welcome that seems to be par for the course with celeb stylists. Not so from Dan Sharp, Danka Panka's owner and stylist, nor from his lovely staff. I have always been warmly greeted and treated as a valuable client. Dan and his talented wife Dana have created quite the soothing and welcoming space. A visit to Danka Panka is, for me, like a mini spa treatment. Fast forward a fair few (quite fabulous) hair cuts and I cannot imagine going anywhere else. I call Dan a magician. Since moving back to Carroll Gardens, I have been going to this lovely salon, and I am so happy with everything about it! Firstly, it's a beautiful space with great music I love (..like fleet foxes) always playing. Rosa cuts and colors my hair, and I love her! Received a great bob haircut from Jo. I do not have to blow dry my hair whenever I wash my hair. While she was cutting, she was careful and constantly checking to see if the hair was even and the angles falling in place. This is important for a good precision bob cut in my opinion. Also, Dan the owner gave me a good tip. When you have a graduated bob, you can tuck your wet hair behind your ears and finger dry the back of your hair while your hair dry naturally. The haircut comes out perfectly. Importantly, the great cut looks good while it is growing out until your next cut with them. I got my hair cut from Vivi a few weeks ago - she is a brilliant, talented stylist who listens to clients, gives good feedback and knows how do work with different kinds of hair and different kinds of hair habits. For example, I don't use product, and Vivi worked around me and gave me a fun, beautiful cut! She also gave me tips to style my hair without product! I went to Danka Panka for the first time in March, after moving to the neighborhood, since it got great reviews. I clearly explained what I wanted to my stylist (Rosa) and even showed her pictures. It really wasn't anything fancy. I was up-sold on highlights I really didn't need, but I figured I'd let her do it since it had been a while since I last had my color done. What I ended up with was a David Cassidy Brooklyn hipster mullet, less color and highlights than I had to start with, and a bill for $300, which is way more than I paid when I lived in Manhattan. I hated it so much and was so embarrassed that I had to go back so she could "fix" it, which entailed cutting off half of my previously very nice long hair. I am really not sensitive or particular about my hair, and this is the first time I've ever had to go back to a salon so someone could fix my hair, but I am STILL trying to deal with the aftermath of this haircut 4 months later. Though she was extremely nice and tried to "fix" it, I was given a 15 minute time slot in which she was supposed to accomplish this, and felt like I was getting the stink eye from the other staff ( many of whom, btw, look like they haven't been home or showered since their bender the night before). If you are going to drop $300 on a haircut you can do better than Danka Panka. read more

You must see Rosa! I came to this salon on the recommendation of a friend after getting an unfortunate looking cut from another salon in the area (a highly rated one at that). I hesitate to write this review because it means it'll be harder to get an appointment with anyone at Danka. My 27 year old daughter who just had a baby decided to cut her long thick tresses off (about 18 inches of hair!) to a short bob...and she investigated a lot, and we heard about Danka PAnka, well we went in! Me (grandma( the baby, my daughter and our little dog! We were greeting so warmly I felt right at home! Dan (the owner) his daughters were there and they played with our little doggie and they played with the baby, and over the course of a solid hour Regina turned my daughters beautiful hair into even more beautiful hair, and her new do it incredible, much more beautiful than I ever thought it could be...so now two weeks later I went into Regina with an awful hair cut, and mine is perfect too! And I'm going back as soon as I can so she can do my color...I watched her do color while I was there and she was wonderful, actually everyone there was wonderful! I absolutely adore Celeste!! I've been coming in monthly to get my roots touched up and I always leave the salon feeling like a Victoria's Secret model- beach waves for days (no joke!!). And when you commit to being light blonde, you commit to a lot of root touch ups and Celeste makes the time pass so quickly. Very rude personnel and terrible customer service. They require you to put down $50 deposit and fail to inform you of the cancellation policy when you schedule the appointment and that you'll lose the deposit if you cancel within 24 hours. I had to cancel on short notice due to illness and had to go emergency room instead of the hair salon and they still refused to refund the money and informed me about the cancellation policy post factum. Nor did the inform me that they have a web site where I could read about the policy, at the time I made the appointment. read more

In the past, I'd occasionally get a compliment about my cut. Since finding Leslie, strangers shout me down in the street to find out where I go. I've been to Danka Panka three times and have had a different stylist every time. All three times I've gone they have been great. I am very picky about my hair NOT having layers and they've listened to me every time when I've asked them not to add layers and even helped fix my hair when I went to a different salon. I learned my lesson from that one adventure to a different salon and will never stray again. read more

When you move to a new neighborhood, one of the hardest things to find is a good stylist and colorist close-by and I am happy to say that I've found mine at Danka Panka! Nine months ago, I booked my first appointment with Rosa for a cut and color. I needed a big change but couldn't quite put my finger on what I wanted....I wanted something drastic without looking like a teenager. I was drawn to that new peachy, pink ombred hair but knew I couldn't it pull it off at work. Rosa took a look at my inspiration photos and told me she knew just the color I should go for. I shrugged my shoulders and told her I was putting all my faith in her -- and I am so very glad I did! Rosa dyed my dark brunette locks a lovely shade of strawberry blonde and then added warm, golden bayalage highlights. The result was so flattering and so natural that I had strangers coming up to me on the street telling me how lovely my hair color was. Everyone I meet thinks I'm a natural strawberry blonde (even when I have my darker roots growing in!) which makes me laugh. The next time I went in, we went even lighter with the highlights and added some ombre for summer and it looks amazing. I'm about to go back now for a root touchup and to switch up my bangs. Color is expensive at this salon, but its worth the money -- I have never had such a natural dye job in my life and especially one so drastic as this. Rosa is fun, skilled and trustworthy -- there are no cookiecutter, one-style-fits-everyone, no soccer mom blowouts here. She really listens to what you want and gives it to you. read more

I can't even begin to describe how amazing this salon is. Got a last minute appointment on a Sunday when a different salon had destroyed my hair the day before (to the point where I was crying and I refused to take a my hat off) I wasn't sure what they could do or even if they could fix it! Every staff member was extremely professional and they stayed back a couple hours later so it would be perfect. My hairdresser was amazing to say the least. We went through all the options and she was very honest about what my hair could handle, it was clear that she cared. We came to decision which wouldn't damage my hair and looked fantastic. I cannot speak highly enough of Danka Panka. The salon is intimate with a bright and open setting without any affectations (no music blaring at rock concert decibels, stylists clad all in black or dim, contrived lighting replicated nowhere else in nature). This salon is zero pretense and all class. I was wonderfully surprised by this place, as I specifically came here for Regina. I first saw Regina when I was desperate after a very bad job of highlights (think uneven chunks of yellow throughout a head of dark brown hair - it was really bad) and she was at Salon de Quarter on Smith St., an establishment full of affectation and attitude (see above list of contrivances that you will not find at Danka Panka) - Regina was the only reason to even think of patronizing SDQ. In a single sitting, she transformed my very fine, overprocessed and strawlike hair into a wave of soft, beautiful and blended golden tones. When I walked in, I had thought the damage was irreparable and that I was probably just going to have abandon my hope of soft summer highlights and dye my hair brown again. Instead I walked out with the loveliest highlights ever. I was dumbstruck by the magic she worked to make my hair so gorgeous. I have had my hair done at every amazing, high-priced, top shelf Manhattan salon (think Louis Licari, Oscar Blandi, Kenneth's, etc) and Regina outranks them all - the best color and cuts I've ever gotten. So naturally, when she moved to Danka Panka, my patronage followed. The fact that Danka Panka is such a bright and inviting space was a wonderful bonus. I'm writing an update from my last review following Leslie's handling of the below situation that I had originally shared - not only did Leslie handle the color error made by another stylist with complete professionalism, she also offered to color correct my hair (completely free of charge) and was incredibly helpful re how to best manage moving forward. The color correction process she applied improved my hair color noticeably, and she could not have been more enjoyable to work with. (She is also incredibly knowleadgeable and experienced) She turned what was a frustrating and potentially awkward experience (re returning to the salon etc) into a very professional and enjoyable one. I will be using Leslie & Danka Panka moving forward and greatly appreciate the high level of customer service from both she and the salon.
