Today I had lunch at Daniel George for the first time. I was really pleased with their customer service from all of the staff as well as the quality of food received. We requested to sit outside since it was such a beautiful day. We were quickly seated and attended to. I ordered the Fried Chicken Breast with Fried Green Tomatoes, and Brussel Sprouts. The price was very reasonable for the portion size of food. I was so impressed that I ordered the same thing for a to go order. I will definitely be back hoping to gain another great experience. read more

We had to cancel Valentine reservations due to illness but chose to reschedule for the next weekend. Apparently they were tired from the holiday rush. Although we were seated immediately, we recieved a tight corner table, only to have a large, loud group seated next to us, which made it feel even tighter. The waiter was assigned to two separate rooms, which limited his time for us. It felt that he eventually forgot about us being in the corner. We ordered steamed crab claws for our appetizer that were amazing. I won't speak for my husbands meal, but my pork picatta was tough with very little sauce, the potatoe fingers were cut like tater tots, and the brocollini couldn't be cut it was so undercooked. I should have asked for a steak knife. Although the chocolate sauce was good, the pastry it was drizzled on for dessert was dry and tough as well. Even tho the waiter passed thru our room several times, we had to wait far past having finished our meal to get the ticket to pay. Like I said, they must have been tired from the holiday rush. It isn't a convenient location for us, so I doubt we will try Daniel George again. read more

The chef here rocks. The staff is cool and knows how to serve. Great bar. Great place for a gathering or meeting. The steak and seafood never disappoint. The outside (delivery) catering is inexpensive for what you receive - great for lunch meetings in the back room and or semi-private parties. Everything is fresh, made from scratch, and presented in an amazing fashion. Try the fried or fresh oysters. read more

A nice lunch menu with plenty of options to put together just the meal you would like. Nicely presented and tasty. The service was excellent with just the right amount of guidance in making selections. Food was served quickly but there was was a vey relaxed atmosphere. I hadn't eaten here in a while and was once again very favorably impressed. This place has reliably great food and service and is a good place for a business dinner as it's quiet and the lighting is soft. The atmosphere is quietly elegant with the expected clientelle. The offerings are great and I have not had anything on the menu that disappointed, and we've had just about everything on the menu. It doesn't quite make it into the top tier (for example, I specifically asked for the fish to be on the undercooked side and it was well done) and it's a bit pricy. However its reliability is wonderful and plus they are open on Monday nights. read more

Honestly, I have noticed the chef or kitchen staff has changed in the last year or so. It was evident in my grilled beef tenderloin...the sauce on top of it was SO salty I couldn't even swallow it. At such a fine establishment I would expect everything to be close to perfect! My date and I sent ours both back and it came out within a few minutes and was perfect!!! We also got the fried okra as an appetizer and it was wonderful. The wine selection was very much up to par too. What really made our experience 4 stars was the amazing server. After being bumped from our reservation at another restaurant, Daniel George was able to open up their private room for 10 people for my bachelorette party at 7pm on a Saturday night. Let me start off with the service, which was great. But for the price you pay, the food is mediocre. To my palate, it was not anything out of the ordinary. The scallop plate was okay, would have been better if not cold. The tasting of vegetables plate had some select items on it that were very good: the polenta, seared potatoes, and bok choy with grilled peaches. However, the spinach, mushrooms with quinoa, and asparagus hardly had any flavor, much less that was outstanding. The creamed corn with sausage tasted like cafeteria food, as well as the succotash. Wow was amazed. I had the tenderloin (mr) of course and it was one of the best cuts and cooks I have ever put in my mouth. My wife had the veg plate and it was to die for, more than enough to for two people. Peach cobbler was cooked very well and all the way though. Went on a Friday night. 2 nights ago. 4 people all chose 4 different dishes. Each one was superb. It is extremely expensive but I can't complain about one detail. Waiter top notch, Noise level appropriate, food beautifully presented and more important outstanding. Dishes were Bolognese, Grouper, Scallops and the tenderloin. I had the tenderloin and have never had a more superior piece of beef. Potatoes and asparagus were good, too. Bravo! read more

We went for New Years Eve last night. There was a prix fixe menu, everything we had was extraordinary from the amuse bouche to the dessert. Service was top notch and a specific nod to our server, Matt! He obviously loves his job and everything he serves to his customers. Cannot wait to return and order from the regular menu. read more

Nice dinner date last Friday. We shared the Calamari appetizer---mmmmm it may be my favorite! We had the Scallops entree and Grouper with succotash. We both enjoyed the grouper the most :). Mountain Brook Village is so fortunate to have DG. DG is a great restaurant! Everyone that works there is very friendly from the bartender to hostess to waiters. DG is a great place to eat if you are a single, couple or a group. My husband & I went this time as a couple using a Groupon. Our service was outstanding! We split an appetizer of fried oysters (Best in Birmingham). And each had a small entry. I had the pork piccata and my husband had the grouper. All was divine. I feel like this is becoming one of our little secret places. We have never had a bad experience here. The food is always fresh. The service is great. I love Daniel George, both for the food and the bar atmosphere. The food has always been top notch, from the cheese plate to the pasta, fish and meat dishes. I've honestly never had a bad meal. The servers and bartenders have always been extremely attentive and are great at recommending dishes and then wine pairings too. It's not on the menu but I asked for a veggie plate and they were so accommodating. Daniel George is an upscale place but manages to have a neighborhood feel. Very disappointed with most recent visit. Went for a pre-party drink and appetizer. I've been to the restaurant several times and there are mich better overall in Birmingham. While I have never minded paying for an exceptional meal, the fact that there were six people, seven appetizers and 13 drinks ordered that our bill was $347 was ridiculous. What was most troubling is that is was very early (we were the only table when we were seated) an 18% gratuity was added to our bill. I don't mind that at a Chili's or Ruby Tuesday, but was not appreciated on this evening. read more

Haven't been in several years but thought I'd give it another chance. Huge mistake. Mussels were off and I should have known better then to continue with the seafood. The monkfish was a really strange cut and had a terrible texture. The plating was messy and muddled. The accompanying leeks were EXTREMELY sandy ( a technical mistake that obviously ruins a dish). It seemed as if the kitchen had no skill and no responsibility. To top it off was violently ill all night long. We will not be going back and am conveying our experience to all that we know. read more

Though more well known for their amazing seafood, Daniel George's Magic City hamburger is the best burger in town. Highly recommend!

The food is good here but unfortunately we had a problem with the service. The waiter kept disappearing and ultimately made us late for the concert we were attending after dinner. We had arrived in plenty of time and that shouldn't have happened. The other major issue we had was that we said upfront that it was to be individual bills bc everyone did not know everyone. The waiter brought 1 bill and said we would be doing him a huge favor if we just split it and it was only $5-10 difference in each bill. Because we were late and it was supposed to be close in price we agreed. We found out later after looking at the bills that he had incorrectly charged the wrong items to the wrong people so the bills were in fact not close in price. I called management hoping to get a refund of the overpayment because the largest discrepancy was on my bill and they were very rude and did not care to help. In fact, even went so far as to say the other guests owed me the money. I pleaded that it was no one's fault other than of the waiter and we had already been inconvenienced enough missing the beginning of the concert. I was shocked they were not willing to make this error on their part right. Needless to say (although the food was good) we will not be back. So unfortunate. read more

Would have been delicious and worth every penny if it was half the price. I believe you are partly paying for the location perhaps? Staff seemed knowledgable overall but we got a waiter who did not seem to have the polish required of this restaurant. Was not informative. Food was okay...nothing special. I expect much more surprise and novelty via spices or unique ingredients from such an establishment. If not this, then food cooked to perfection at the very least. Mine was oily and undercooked. Went tonight using a Groupon. I'm glad I didn't pay full price. While the food was all good, it was by no means worth the prices on the menu. I would return if with a group that wished to dine here, but there are many other restaurants in Birmingham at which you can get better food at similar prices. read more

New Year's Eve dinner...disappointment. NEVER, EVER, EVER, AGAIN!!! After having made reservations (for four) and arriving promptly, we were greeted and seated. The atmosphere was nice as well as our waitress. However, there were a few times throughout the evening that she seemed insulted at our requests, like for bread, butter and well-done steaks. My companion and I both ordered the beef tenderloin. We requested his to be cooked "well" and mine "very well done". In fact, we made certain that our waitress understood that we were in no hurry, no rushing the chef, and just wanted to make certain our request was honored. I realize that "chefs" may be insulted at this choice however, it is our choice and my belief that any good chef would honor that request. We are, by the way, the ones eating and paying for this meal! When our dinners arrived neither was cooked to our requested specifications. His steak was rare, mine medium rare. Our waitress never came back to check to see if our dinners were cooked as requested. After eating the outside edges of our steaks and a portion of the dried out potatoes, our waitress returned to ask if we were ready for desserts. We were contemplating dessert when our waitress returned and apologized for what she was about to say, then proceeded to tell us that her manager had requested that she offer us a "nightcap" and request that we leave because they "needed our table". What????? There were empty tables all around. No, we were not acting like fools, we were appropriately dressed, and had not even complained about our food. We were simply trying to quietly enjoy a nice dinner with friends. Needless to say, we were all in such disbelief that we paid our quite pricey bill and left. A chef may prefer that a piece of meat be cooked rare; a professional chef knows how to cook a piece of meat rare, meadum rare, well as well as char-broiled, super well done, if that is what I request and be willing to do so, regardless of HIS preferences. A restaurant manager/owner employs chefs that cook food to the specifications requested by the patrons, not their own, personal preferences. The food was very disappointing. The treatment was insulting! I will once again say, NEVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN!! We eat our often and will spend our money elsewhere. read more
