We would like to provide an update. Remember the unit Dan chose not to enter to inspect and just accepted comments from the residents? That was Tues, Oct 28. There were mice sightings in the unit the evening of Nov 1 (Sat). We emailed Dan on Nov 2 as per instructed to only communicate through email with him and not Cynthia, asking for immediate advice, action, and reiterating Nov 10 is way too long to wait especially now we still have mice around. In the end, I didn't hire Dan. The only reason is that it's difficult to get a hold of someone and his schedule seems pretty packed, so the earliest he can come is always a week or more out, whereas other exterminators and bug removal companies were able to schedule something in the next couple of days at most, sometimes the same day. I finally had something scheduled (actually canceled someone else because Dan's reviews seemed more encouraging) 11 days ahead. Before that date came around I had inspections/estimates from two more companies and the job done by one. (and likely better done than Dan because it sounds Dan wouldn't have opened up the wall to get to the nest) Finally I canceled my appointment by text and still haven't received acknowledgment of it two days later. People seem pleased with his services and I'm sure he's doing a good job considering he's booked like that, so only read this review for the scheduling part. But it's so important to get a hold of someone quickly when you're dealing with yellowjackets flying around your house and inside your garage. For what it's worth the quoted price to take care of a yellowjacket nest with sprays was in line with other businesses I talked to. But I was told he couldn't attack the nest directly because it was inside a wall. That seems limiting. read more

I needed assistance with ant control. The office manager, Cynthia, not only returned my call after hours but went the extra mile to coordinate my service with my neighbor as I live in a duet. Dan was recommended to us by a roofer friend. We had concerns about a hole in our foundation which had been treated earlier by a helpful neighbor. Dan set a trap and caught a possum. Dan's unique methods of correcting the initial treatment consisted of live capture and transport to a new location rather than killing this creature. I was not able to use Dan the Bug Man's services due to lack of key information given by his scheduler and false information on his website regarding pesticides and ant abatement. Very frustrating. I chose to use this service based on what Dan says on his website, but what he told me in person was in direct conflict with that. Website says he uses EcoExempt IC, which consists of natural products, including Rosemary Oil, Peppermint Oil and Vanillin. What he actually uses (he pointed me to a different website describing it) is Suspend SC Insecticide. He only uses the EcoExempt if you sign up for a bimonthly or monthly service AFTER an initial treatment with Suspend SC. This is listed nowhere on his website, yet he implied it was my impetus to ask which chemicals are used to kill the ants, even though he supposedly clearly lists what chemicals he uses. When I pulled up his website and showed it to him, he at first said that it cost too much money to have his website say everything that he uses, but, in the end, said he would have the misinformation removed from the website. Moreover, when the appointment was arranged on the phone the only concern the scheduler mentioned was that I should rake up any leaves in the yard. When Dan arrived and the front sprinklers were on, he immediately told me he would have to reschedule and could not do the work because of the wet lawn. When asked him how long he needed to have the lawn not be watered, he said "at least two days". I never had a fighting chance to keep the appointment, since I was never informed of this condition in order for him to actually do the work! He said he would talk to the scheduler about it, but meanwhile, my time was wasted and I still have ants. Sorry, Dan, you seemed like a nice guy, but I have to warn other potential customers about my bad experience. read more

He arrived in my appointment window, took a look in my attic, and shortly after, he told me that the thorough inspection wouldn't be needed and that I should contact a roofer to block off the access points in my roof. What great customer service. I called in a panic! I have critters in my ceiling. After being told Dan doesn't service my area Cynthia talked me off the ledge. Told me to look around the permitters of the house and to set traps with snickers (and with all this Halloween candy I have plenty! ) that they come and go building a nest so look for the access points! We had some scurrying in our attic, and shopped around for the best quality/price. Dan came in at the top, and was also one of the quickest to respond. We had him come over, and he outlined the problem and solutions in a straightforward manner. We had the work done (by a person recommended by Dan, who was also friendly and charged reasonably), and we haven't (so far) had any further problems (It's been over a year). Well, this was certainly a lesson in being had. Pest control is a notoriously inconsistent lot and i thought i'd found someone who was really dependable. Glowing reviews on yelp and a very personable manner made dealing with Dan, initially, seem like i'd hit the jackpot. Alas, i paid him nearly $200 to do an inspection which he wanted in cash, Once he got that fee, he more or less disappeared and i haven't been able to reach him since. Yelpers be warned, this guy appears to be a scam artist. i should have known with the whole wanting cash upfront to do an inspection, but he was so charming and funny.... We talked a lot about the pest situation and he gave me a ballpark estimate. I made it abundantly clear to him that i wanted him to do this as soon as humanly possible and to get right back to me. We set up an appointment, but because i don't live at the house (my niece does) i got a friend to stand in for me (who used to live at the house and knows it well) for the inspection. He left her with the same price he quoted me and said he would prepare and estimate and get back to her. Crickets. I call him again. He EMAILS ME BACK and again promises me that his contractor will email a written estimate. He wrote these words in an email to me. Crickets, again It's been over a month since i first contacted him. So i start calling and writing, mad this time. he left me a message yesterday, explaining that he had gotten in touch with my friend (nope), left an estimate (he hadn't) and was waiting for a response. FINALLY got him on the phone today. The first words out of his mouth are: "I sent you an email this morning, did you get it?" WTF? Seriously? Don't you think i would have gotten it if you had sent it? I got your last email, the one in which you promised to send me an estimate. He blames it on a lack of communication between my friend and me and acts like he's the victim in this plot between my friend and me to destroy his credibility. But i paid you $200? He then volunteers, "I don't feel bad about that." Wow, okay, well i do um, okay....i'm gonna call somebody else. read more

Dan the Bug Man came out to look at our home and told us we had mites. He fumigated our home. We threw out furniture as a result of his diagnosis. Not a professional at all. We found out later, we did not have mites at all. The "green" pesticide means nothing. Dan had to wear a hazmat suit and we had to stay out of the home for 3 days. Though I appreciate the warning and not sending us in too soon, this was further expense as a result of misdiagnosis. Second, after a misdiagnosis - we now find unapproved photos on this site. We did not give permission for those, or the use of our names in this add. Lastly, he has no idea what he's talking about. Those are squirrels... Be ready for Dan to play games. First, he confirmed that my bites were indeed those of rat mites. Then he pointed out and photographed each entry/exit they were using in my house. He sized up my handyman skills and the steps that needed to be taken, and we decided that I would do the work - which he carefully explained to me. I had Dan come by for ants. Turns out I have ants *and* rats. Joy. No, but really. Dan was truly a joy! His "bug-side manner" is outstanding in light of being the bearer of bad news like "Hey there's tons of rat poo along the other side of your fence. I think they're nesting in your neighbor's ivy above your deck, and oop, yes there's the rat turds...on your deck. Joy. He spent over an hour with me surveying our house and yard, giving his best recommendations for the ants and rats. He also kept in mind our baby and dog, recommending to stay away from the poison and sticking with a baiting method, which he said is far more effective but requires patience and diligence. Since his visit Dan has been responsive to my questions and concerns and is truly compassionate about my critter-induced anxiety. We have also since rat-proofed our home on his recommendation and feel much safer now. We can't wait to have him back to reassess our ant and rat situation...but I'm also looking forward to just hanging with the guy. His humor is dry, his heart is big, and his knowledge is valuable. BTW, I think he is now going to trademark "bug-side manner" so don't go starting up your own extermination company to steal my catch phrase. I'm going to push for royalties. read more

Dan is not only an experienced bug and rodent professional, but a really great guy. Two years ago he diagnosed the rat problem in our attic, searched our whole house for their entrance, and advised me how to stop them. Then he returned for several weeks to bait and check traps to "eliminate" the critters. Last week we called him again for a similar problem in our basement. Another "family" found its way through a hole I had ignored. Dan confirmed the infestation and removed a bunch of nasty insulation under the house. Dan is really good at finding, identifying and tracking the little buggers, but he makes the whole process downright enjoyable. He is hilarious and extremely knowledgable at the same time. He's practically a stand-up comedian with a pest habit! His assistant makes scheduling a breeze, and he is always on time. You will be impressed at his experience and easy recommendations. Dan is great. Very nice guy, was able to get out to our house in San Anselmo within a day or two (we had an ongoing ant problem so it wasn't an emergency) and was very knowledgeable and capable. He sprayed our house inside and out with a natural pesticide that - amazingly - had no smell. And Shazamm! No more ants. We had several colonies around the house so it was not surprising when they reappeared a couple of days later. Dan came right back out and found another colony, sprayed it, and we have not had any problems since - now going on a couple of months. Fast, friendly, knowledgeable and effective. I called Dan based on reviews on Yelp, and also b/c I needed someone to check out the scurrying I was hearing on my roof at night. As a new home owner I of course feared the worst - an infestation of some kind that eluded all the pre-purchase inspections. Dan came over with no obligation and inspected the property for signs of rodents (I suspected they were rats). He could not find any sign of rodents, and we needed to get to the roof - but the problem is my building is almost 3 stories high with no easy roof access and neither of us had ladders large enough. Dan referred me to a roofer friend of his who he says he has trained on what to look for and who also has the equipment to get to the roof. He said the roofer would charge about $50. All this effort and inspection, to my surprise, did not cost a thing (Thanks Dan). I called the roofer. He came and went on the roof and diagnosed the problem as pigeons, and gave me a quick synopsis on the condition of my roof. So, I had no rats and the pigeons were not posing any problems. What a relief. All in all, it was a good experience and kudos for Dan to be able to network to serve his clients where he could not help (and for not charging me for his visit). The roofer, however, charged me $200 - way more than the $50 I expected. I would gladly use Dan again, and just recommend he get in tune with what his referrals are charging (or don't say anything at all about what they may charge). read more

This review is long overdue, but here it is. I saw a little mouse running across my kitchen at night and I almost died of a hart attack . I realized that if this mouse was so comfortable coming out with me there, that probably meant he had been there for a while which means there are probably more. I moved my refrigerator to the side and saw tons of droppings on the floor. I had no idea and had not seen anything before. I did my Yelp research and called Dan. He came the next week, told me what I needed to do, which meant sealing my house from outside and inside so they wouldn't get in and then get rid of the ones inside. He is very knowledgeable, showed me were they were getting in and he also told me how to seal the entrances so I could do it myself and save some money. I told him to do it himself because it was too much for me to do, and he came a week later with mesh, caulking and other things and took care of sealing my garage and all the possible entrances to my house. Then he put traps in different places. We got them all because I have not seen any more droppings in the 7 months since he came. I highly recommend Dan. He is a nice guy who cares about getting the job done. read more

Dan the Bug Man has been our contracted exterminator for over six years now and I can't say enough good things about him. Devastatingly handsome and quick witted, he is the pied piper of rodents. All joking aside, we run a 20,000 square foot building with 11 food related vendors and because of Dan, we have had nary a pest problem in six years. The moment evidence of rodent behavior was sighted, Dan swooped in, laid some traps inside and outside the building and we haven't seen our furry friends since. He always insists that as a business we do the right thing to keep pests out of our building and provides constant training and follow up when there are issues. Dan is also a native Detroiter and the more of us there are in the Bay Area the better. He came out one time, was super friendly throughout the process and the problem was completely resolved. We haven't had any further ant problems in 5 years.
