Of all the chicken & waffles, I have ever had, this is by far my favorite. It's unfortunate that I have to fly to North Carolina to have it but if and when I do, going to Dame's is a must. My first experience, they were in a smaller, hole in the wall, type restaurant with a line out the door to be seated. That's the tell-tale sign that it must be good. Now they have move to a much large location, less "home feeling" but I guess they outgrow the older location. Ok, so this review is strictly on the traditional chicken n waffles. The waffles are delicious. Big, not soggy, enough crunch, and many flavors to choose from. The sweet potato waffle was actually really good despite my reservation. The fried chicken?? Seasoned and fried to perfection. I usually have the wings or the drumsticks. The smears are flavored butter but it's delicious. So my personal faves are The Carolina Cockerel, the Light Brown Leghorns and the Red Crested Rose Comb, cause I need bone-in meat! Dame's is deserving of every one of these five stars. Everything about Dame's just works! A huge shout out for our server, Aaron, who was definitely one of the best in the industry that I've ever encountered. He just has that warm, friendly personality that makes you feel so welcome to be dining in this establishment! It took us a little while to figure out how all the shmears and how everything worked on the menu, but he was a huge help. I tried the What A Classy Hen and added an additional shmear, peach apricot. Ohhhh, yum! Ok these waffles are the perfect thickness, density, with a sight spring and crunch that doesn't get soggy with multiple shmears! The cutlets seasoning was so flavorful! I loved that the flavor was more robust than subdued like some batters can be. It paired beautifully with the waffle and shmears. I chose the Ceci's Mac and cheese for my side and it was good, but could have used a bit more salt which was an easy fix. The ambiance had a smooth jazz vibe and no detail was left unattended. The bathroom was cute which says a lot since some restaurants don't focus on that space. If you do visit the restroom, stop and read the history of Dame's which is nicely framed along the side wall. Service here is wonderful. Our server was very sweet, professional and clean (I am reviewing this restaurant for those worried about COVID 19 because I know I am). I have to say, each table is sprayed and so are the chairs between guests. I saw the gentleman wait a minute or two to wipe down the table to let the product sit. The chicken and waffles were okay. I opted for the wings because I am not a huge fan of a thick piece of fried chicken breast. I thought the chicken was very crispy but a little too greasy for my liking. I probably should have opted for the breast. Smuckers syrup????? You have all this other homemade stuff and this is what you serve????? The peach smear was very good. We were searching for a place that seemed like forever on a Monday to go out to lunch. My parents are in town and they were excited about the food scene that I can't stop raving about. I rarely write negative reviews, and this one is sad to me because I have always LOVED Dame's. I feel like the general quality has decreased in the last 5 years, but that's not the reason I'm writing this. Today I went with a group and ordered two sides (attached is the sides from the menu). I wasn't that hungry, and saw they were 2 for $5 (and 1 for $3) My bill comes and each side was around $5. So a total of about $10. For two TINY sides. I asked why the amount was different than what was listed on the menu and was told that's only the price if you order Build Your Own. To be clear, this is the only price listed on the menu. We had been trying to go to Dame's, a favorite of ours though we don't go as often as we'd like - tried the Franklin St. (CH) location and there was a sign on the door with limited hours (closed Wednesday evening for dinner) and ended up eating elsewhere. We finally got to the Foster St. (Durham) location yesterday. We called ahead of time and the person who answered estimated a 30 minute wait. Upon arriving the hostess estimated a 30-40 minute wait - we added ourselves to the waitlist since thought that was reasonable. Over an hour later getting a bit hungry, we asked where in line we were and there were still 5 parties ahead of us and she estimated about 20 minutes. Ultimately, 2 hours later we were finally seated. Had we known the extent of the wait we likely would've eaten somewhere else because we were very hungry by that point. It also took awhile to get our food so about 3 hours after arriving, we were finishing up our meal. The most exciting part to me was that they've finally added a vegetarian/vegan chik'n option, so I was able to try that. The chicken (both the meat and vegetarian was a little tough, but the waffles were amazing as always. We had some of their cocktails as well while we waited for food, which didn't have much alcohol (very empty stomachs should have felt something ha) but were tasty. The sides (cheesy grits & mac and cheeses) were perfect. I did very much appreciate the waitress letting us know there was one food ticket ahead of ours and an estimated time frame. We still love Dame's and knowing the wait time would have been helpful in making a decision sooner. We totally understand it depends on turning tables in the restaurant, staffing, etc, but spending most of our day there (between driving and waiting) with a family member who was on vacation, while we had other things planned and canceled, was a bummer. We will definitely return but probably in a takeout capacity. A tip is that it looks like you can add yourself to the waitlist ahead of arrival (which should have been communicated when we called). read more

Atmosphere: The inside of Dame's Chicken and Waffles is big and inviting. There's a good amount of seating but can get pretty busy especially on the weekends.  Service: Our service was ok. While nothing terrible happened, our service was on the slower side.  Food: We've tried several of the menu items at Dame's, including Mimi's Sassy Shrimp and Grits, Light Brown Leg Horns with a side of grits, What a Classy Hen with a side of potato salad, and the Carolina Cockerel with a side of collard greens. The shrimp and grits were very salty and greasy, making it an extremely heavy dish that we wouldn't order again. On the other hand, the chicken and waffles are all delicious! The chicken is crispy and juicy and goes very well with the different shmears that Dame's offers. Dame's has to be some of the best fried chicken in Durham, so we recommend ordering what they are famous for. We've also tried their Carolina Sunrise Mimosa, which consists of peach moscato, orange juice, and raspberry drizzle. It was refreshing and paired well with the chicken and waffles.  Overall: Dame's Chicken and Waffles is a must-have chicken and waffles joint in Durham. I've loved Dame's for years but hadn't been since they had taken the Frizzled Fowl off the menu for a while but the other day on a whim I decided to look up their menu again and it's baaaaackkk babbyyyy. We came for lunch on a Thursday and although they don't have the dinner menu at lunch, our wonderful and kind waitress Alysha was able to create an a la carte version of it based on the lunch menu (shout out to the attentiveness and care) and my partner ordered a single cutlet with an original waffle and maple pecan shmear and whiskey glaze. The frizzled fowl is a panko cutlet with k pop sauce and blueberry schmear and I got it with a vegan waffle that tastes like apple sauce and is soooo good. We both greatly enjoyed our meals, topped off by some of the best service we've gotten anywhere. For sides, we got cheesy grits and Mac n cheese, both so well seasoned and delicious. We also ordered mimosas ($6 at lunch on a weekday). The prices, quality, and jazz vibes that permeate the restaurant can't be beat. I wish I could keep this place to myself to guarantee that there's always a table for me when I'm craving the Frizzled fowl, but sharing is caring and I want them to do so well that they never consider closing or taking my favorite meal off the menu again. read more

I wanted to love Dame's because of all the hype and this being our first time having fried chicken & waffles in the actual south. We were sorely disappointed, though, and the stars of the show were really the "sides." 3/5 build-your-own fried chicken + waffles: we ordered 2 fried cutlets/chicken breasts on top of a standard waffle. The chicken was dry when you cut into it, and the fried part just straight up fell apart because it was overfried. There was no flavor to it. 5/5 peach apricot shmear/butter: a unique, delicious addition. If they can get the fried chicken right, that'd go amazing on top of the shmeared waffle with a maple syrup drizzle. 5/5 mac n cheese: wow. I loved that the mac n cheese was well seasoned and had the right amount of cheese (this is not the gooey type). It's a small side, but highly recommend. 3/5 sassy shrimp & grits: huge portion, but unbalanced flavor. They skimped on the sausage, but gave us a decent amount of shrimp. Couldn't taste the cheese or its texture, and I was wondering if this is what grits are supposed to taste like... it also came out overly salty in the sauce so mix well before you eat. 4/5 service: they're clearly understaffed for a huge dining space. The place is supposed to open at 11, but there was a line waiting until 11:10am on a Tuesday afternoon - how strange. They took a bit long to seat us to ensure their staff could keep up with the orders, which was fine but not great if you're in a lunch rush/on the clock. Our guy, Kai, was a delight though. Great waffles, Okay chicken. My visit to Dame's was on a pretty easy going Monday afternoon before my flight back to Austin. The staff was very friendly and made checkin at the host stand a little awkward cause you their waiting area is pretty small, they have a host but you also have to check in on a tablet through Yelp. Not the worst experience but it's a bit weird that the host cannot just add you to the waitlist. The menu is pretty great with lots of options from breakfast to lunch/ dinner. There was a little confusion on what a smear was (it's just a flavored butter they make) and a drizzle (basically a flavored syrups but also halved cashews is an option?). But we're here for the food. Let us get into it. The server suggested the sweet potato waffle which was very good. It was moist and easy to cut. The waffle itself didn't have much of a flavor but I got the maple pecan smear and the whiskey creme drizzle. They also give you syrup. This all comes on the side so you can decide how much or how little to put. I used all the smear but only a small amount of the whiskey creme cause it was a pretty strong flavor. The chicken options are fried, grilled, or a vegan chik'n. Glad to see a vegan option for all my vegan friends. That being said I went with the fried chicken and was a bit disappointed with it. It was boneless which was nice. The breading was okay but it was dry as sand. It was overcooked and hard to cut with the butter knife provided. If you're a chicken and waffle place I expect the chicken and the waffles to be good, not just half of it. But this might have been a one off. I mean this place had a line out the door over the weekend and even for a Monday morning there was a 30 min wait to get in. I also got the mac and cheese and the southern grits with cheese. The mac and cheese was pretty good but they put rosemary in it and I'm not the biggest fan of rosemary personally. But that being said it was very cheesy and creamy. Still very good. The grits however... I would pass on those. The cheese just sorta clumps in there and the grits themselves have almost no flavor. They had the consistency of boogers. I usually like my grits with a savory or sweet flavor. These were just bland. The Shrimp and Grits was suggested as a popular item so maybe they do a better job with them on that item. But overall, the staff was nice for seemingly being under staffed that day in the FOH. The options were really great ( the vegan option for waffle is Oatmeal and they offer the vegan protein) and this is a fast casual classic southern cooking meal unlike anything we have in Austin. read more

The best chicken and waffles I've ever had hands down. I ordered the Carolina Cookerel which consisted of a blueberry waffle, peach and apricot shmear and topped with three crispy wings. I also added the caramel and salted cashew drizzle which was recommend and that just blew it over the top! I like how you can customize your meal and not just get what is offered you can change things up from the menu. The only thing I was not a fan of was the sides. I had the mac and cheese which was ok not that creamy and it had a weird Italian seasoning in it which threw me off. Another thing was the price which I thought was a bit high. OUT-STANDING!!! First, i have to say, "after having my first Vegan experience here with the waffles, i'll never go back to regular waffles again"!!! *hand clap* SO Good!! I forgot all about syrup. Next, i have to compliment the Collard Greens. I could order a POTful!!! Haha, D-Lish! Dames mac-n-cheese (penne-n-cheese *wink*) is also a "plate-filler-upper". OH, shu-rimp-N-guh-ritz.......BANGIN!! Grits were just right with the flavor of the skrimps and a special lil *punch* pow in there with some spice; dy-no-mite!!! Now, the chicken. Great 'grade' of chicken; first off! Seasoning was perfect. Nice crispy, flavorful outside with the mouth watering juiciness inside. I normally add hot sauce while i eat chicken, but i didn't even think of it this time. Adding something to each bite from the fruit cup was a nice advsnture as well. Waffle, chicken, blueberry or waffle, chicken, strawberry! Find your own fvorite!! Dames Chicken and Waffles should be in each county!! The decor in Durham has a certain vibe, it's like soulful.
