I have been seeing Dr. Schaefer since 2006 and began visiting the attached Medspa Devinir Aesthetics in 2021 for Botox. Dr. Schaefer is a great doctor, he always makes me feel at ease. It can be embarrassing pointing out all your skin blemishes but he just casually explains what they are and takes care of them quickly in the office. He usually has a med student with him and is always teaching and explaining. Some doctors just want to get the patients in and out but he really takes his time, which is why I've stuck with him for nearly 20 years! read more

Horrible front office customer "service". Lousy scheduling service. My son has been a patient of Lindsay Reck (a 5 star provider) for 18 months. I scheduled an appointment for my son over 1 month in advance with US Dermatology's scheduling service. We showed up for the appointment time/date only to be told by the front office staff that we needed a referral for the appointment. The person said I could reschedule or keep the appointment and pay out of pocket. Since it was US Dermatology's error, I asked her to call my son's pediatrician and get the new referral. She said their policy is for the client to get the referral (had I known I needed a new referral I would have gotten it when the appointment was scheduled {which the scheduling service should have told me to}). Then, she said that the call to the pediatrician would be outside the 15 minute appointment window thus it would not be possible to see Lindsay today anyway (we've never had an on-time appointment (within 15 minutes of the scheduled appointment anyway) with a US Dermatology clinician. Surely, they have a policy about being mindful of their client's time. ;-) Poor customer service cost US Dermatology 5 patients, as my family will be moving on to another dermatology practice. What a shame, I really like Lindsay Reck. read more

I'd give zero if I could. My previous dermatologist retired and I mistakenly thought one of the founding members of the practice (or at least a senior doctor) would be good. And indeed things started off well. Then for no reason I could not use the portal anymore; I could log in but I could not send a message to anyone. After driving to the clinic and explaining, and handing a printed note, and talking with Dr. Schaefer, everyone looked at me like I was speaking Martian. Worse, Dr. Schaefer failed twice to do the prior authorization. I'm not saying that's easy but it's his job and he failed. I am looking for another dermatologist now. read more

Always friendly, Dr. Schaefer, who is also one of Texas' renowned Superdocs in publications. He also brings around young doctors in training, which is to the good of the system. His office staff suffer from the same rudeness that seems to infect most doctors' offices, which I don't understand, but the Doc himself seems competent and reassuring whenever I go there. read more

It was very clear that after only being offerred a 2 month appointment by my dermatologist of 14 years, it was time to start looking. Dr. Schaefer and associates are, as far as I know, top-rated and board certified. I made an appointment that day with the PA, and as I knew should happen, she grabbed Dr. S. to confirm her diagnosis. She also offered to treat some other problems I wasn't really there for, and directed me with prescription to where I could get an antibiotic free--still getting it 6 months later! How is that for great service!!! I ended up across the hall at Devonair, the aesthetic (non-insurance) part of the practice, and have been very satisfied there as well. Very convenient location just off Mopac North. As I work in the medical field, a put-off of 2 months is not acceptable for a dermatologist who takes about 30 seconds to look at something, no matter how great he is, when you have been with him 14 years. Also, I know PAs grab MDs all the time to confirm diagnoses and treatment plans and their PA is one of the best I've seen. read more

My quality of life has improved greatly thanks to Dr. Schafer! For the past 2 years I have been struggling with a horribly painful problem on my face that was creating open sores that would not heal and would turn into holes so deep I literally cleaned them out by sticking a Q-Tip inside the hole and all the cotton would be hidden by the hole. Dr. Schafer was the 3rd Dermetologist that I visited about this problem. The other two Dermetologist that I saw prior to Schafer diagnosed me with a staph infection and gave me different antibiotics and topical ointments that did nothing for me. One of the two Dr's made me feel like he was shaming me for picking. I'm sorry, I can't help that I have always had a problem with picking my skin. I have done this since I was a kid and would scrape up my knees. Once a scab formed I would pick it and not even realize I was doing it, so when I have this horrible throbbing pain on my face that feels like it needs the pressure to be released I can't help it..... anywho, long story short. A Dr. friend of mine recommended I get a 3rd opinion and referred me to Dr. Schafer. Upon meeting Dr.Schafer he immediately told me that I did not have a staph infection. What I have is dermatitis. Basically hormonal adult acne and the pain & pressure I was feeling was cystic acne under the skin. We tried a few mild treatments that worked some but eventually things would flare up again so he talked me into going on a low dosage of accutain. This has been a life changing medication for me! My skin is still healing but I am not having any new cystic acne popping up. And the old holes are healing and not getting infected like before. Every appointment I get great one on one time with Dr.Schafer and I feel like he really cares about getting me better. I highly recommend Dr.Schafer for anyone that is having skin problems especially if you have cystic acne, that crap hurts!!! You don't have to deal with it anymore! read more

Dr. Schaefer is the most delightful personality! He is an excellent dermatologist and he takes the fear factor out of going to the doctor in the first place. He treats his patients with respect and he has a very efficient staff. I was glad when he moved to the Spicewood Springs area because not only is it closer to where I live, but so much nicer than his former location. Dr. Schaefer knows what he is doing and he treats everyone with the utmost courtesy and respect. Despite the sometimes long wait, it really is worth it. Kudos to Dr. Schaefer! read more

I was referred by my doctor to Dr Schaefer for a skin condition that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. The first appt was in 2 weeks. I asked if there was a way to be called if he had a cancellation and was told I should call in daily to see. I made the appoint for the 18th. After we hung up, I realized that they did not have my contact information or name even. I called back and gave them that information for that same 3:20 appt. I even put it in my calendar while i was on the phone with the person. Today, before my appointment, I called in to verify the address and was told there is NO appointment on the books and, in fact, Mr Shaefer was blocked out for that time, as he needed to leave early. I have reservations about whether anybody should rely on online reviews of doctors, including mine. However, I will say that both my own experience and others' opinions lead me to the view that he is one of the best diagnosticians in Austin. I happen to have a rare skin condition that was misdiagnosed by several other dermatologists. As a result of his skill, I'm on the mend. He's very business-like and won't spend a lot of time shooting the breeze but he will get you well and takes an interest in "difficult" cases. read more

Dr. Schaefer is terrific. Their office is another story. You have to pay up front, even though they have your insurance information and have made the call (in my case $160 which is an entire month of electricity or a few tanks of gas). I put on credit card. Was told I would get a refund which I knew I would since insurance had already met my deductible. This was 07/10. Insurance settled on July 18. Yes, they owe me the full amount, as expected. Gave them a month to send. Nothing. Called on 08/12. They said it would be rushed. Meanwhile, I paid my credit card. Called again 08/27. They haven't paid yet but see it's in the works. Then told me I had to call the corporate office located in Lufkin to make sure. I guess this is another way to pass the buck. They offered to transfer the call, but many of them are dropped. Great outsourcing billing! I called Lufkin. After 11 minutes of being on hold, was told check would be mailed on 08/29. So, if you use this office, expect to have a delay in any refund. Thinking they probably cater to mostly high end patients who do not live in struggling times. Neither local nor corporate office seemed to really show any empathy. Lost me as a client. Hope to get my refund sometime in September. read more

Went to see Dr Schaefer for a mole... He was awesome, just has a great bedside Very knowledgeable, was able to help me with my issue, where a different dermatologist referred me to a podiatrist. It resolved the issue on the spot. He was compassionate and gentle. I will go see him for any other issues that require a dermatologist and have given several friends his card. read more
