FINALLY ate in! We've probably had take out 8 times since 7-2023; we usually go over the river when we want to eat at a restaurant. This particular Monday night we opted to eat a 5:30P dinner in a relatively quiet, open restaurant with Kaitlyn C. as our server. Sake and water for husband and soda for myself all delivered quickly. Also ordered apps at same time explaining husband was famished. Pork gyoza showed up in less than 5 min, and our spring rolls with yummy chili sauce arrived before the gyoza was gone. Husband's Beef Yaki Udon arrived in a reasonable size bowl - no overfilling with too many noodles. I thought the beef was good quality and the cabbage was just the right amount and not too strong. The Crunchy Dynamite Roll w/soy paper and Tsurai Roll (suggested by Kaitlyn when I was overwhelmed with choices) w/sriracha on the side were the last to make it to the table but worth the wait. I'm so glad we asked for a recommendation because otherwise the Tsurai would have been overlooked - and it was the bomb! Not a cheap meal ($71.30 w/tax w/o tip) but eating out generally isn't. OMG is all I can say...ok actually there's more. I went to Daiwa with my friend and his daughter after church and we totally pigged out. Since it was my first time and they're regulars, I let them order and they picked all of the best items on the menu. They ordered the shrimp tempura, spicy kimchi udon (my favorite), the butter baked scallop with garlic butter sauce (sooo good), Hamachi Kama( broiled Yellow Tail neck) with white rice and the sea salt white fish sashimi (amazing). I ordered the marine roll just because- everything we had was phenomenal. I was absolutely wowed and I'm now, a life long fan of Daiwa! This was an authentic Japanese experience and I can say that as someone who's been to Japan and had authentic Japanese food. Daiwa had such fresh sushi and so many different kinds of rolls and sushi to choose from! A friend and I shared the squid steak and it was freshly served as soon as it was made. I ordered two rolls - one was a salmon roll and another was one of their special creations. A friend ordered a crunchy roll with shrimp that was topped of with lemon and it tasted great. Everything was so freshly made. In addition to their numerous sushi roll options, they also have lunch and dinner specials. I had high hopes for Daiwa Sushi, and for the most part, the experience started off great. The service was attentive and friendly -- our server was kind, knowledgeable, and made us feel welcomed. Most of the food was fresh and well-prepared, and we were genuinely enjoying ourselves... until one dish ruined the experience. I ordered a mussel dish that sounded appealing on the menu, but nowhere did it disclose that it was heavily loaded with mayonnaise -- I'm talking at least 50% mayo, which completely overpowered the flavor and texture of the mussels. It was honestly unpleasant and felt misleading based on the menu description. I expressed my dissatisfaction to our server, who remained polite and professional, so no complaints there. However, when it came time for management to step in, I was surprised and disappointed that the best they could offer was a 20% discount on the dish -- which I barely touched. For a restaurant that presents itself as high-quality, I expected better customer service on the management level. I've been here a few times because it's close to a friends house. It's not aesthetically pleasing by any means and there's always 1-2 gnats flying around every single time I go. We came for an early dinner at 4:30 on Saint Patricks day. There were plenty of tables and no wait, but an hour later the tables were filling up. The decor is lovely, creative and tasteful. Everything was spotless and clean. We started with a bottle of Pino Grigio, the edamame and seaweed salad. We are from the west coast and a sauced edamame was something different for us - deep flavor, spicy and so delicious. I could drink it. I suggested to our wonderful server, Josh, that they should make a bloody mary from that sauce recipe. Delicious! Later, we ordered several rolls. The Peppered Tuna, Tsurai Special, Softshell Crab Roll, a Rock & Roll and a Crawfish Roll. All were excellent - fresh, succulent, delightfully crafted and served with care and with pride. Again, the sauces - especially the sauce for the Peppered Tuna and the edamame are worth asking for on the side. We preferred them to the usual soy sauce and wasabi. Included in the order was smelt roe sushi. The service personnel were excellent. There were only 4 little packets of soy sauce and one tiny portion of wasabi and ginger. The tuna roll, yellow tail roll and smelt roe were good. The calamari was not squid and greasy; the kimchi octopus salad were very disappointing. Sorry to say this. Daiwa is my absolute favorite sushi spot on the Westbank. The food is always fresh and I never have any major issues with service. It's my go-to spot for a quick and light lunch or dinner. Full transparency: I've never dined in, only done take out, but each time it's well packaged and incredibly delicious. Nonetheless, I don't think I've had anything that I didn't like from Daiwa. Honestly, Daiwa is probably my favorite sushi place on the Westbank just because the quality is their sushi has always been top tier for me. We try to go here every few months just because it's a little out of the way for us but I swear, any time you come here it's always so busy. The time before last that we tried coming to eat here, there was a 45 min wait and we ended up leaving but I still crave Daiwa sushi all the time! The last time we went there, the sushi was a little loose and kept falling apart on me when I picked it up and I didn't love that but the taste makes up for it for me. I always try and get it cut in 8 pieces rather than 6 just because the 6 pieces are so big to eat. I love that they have so many pictures of their sushi on the menu because it's really helpful in figuring out what you want. I actually hosted my bachelorette party in the back with karaoke, which was pretty great! I loved it and I think everyone else did too. Would definitely recommend. read more

I have been there two times so far. One time I was with a small group of friends and the other time was with a large group of colleagues (it was actually for an event). I ordered their salad but different kinds for both of my visits - Tuna Tataki and Ceviche salads. They were good! Tuna tataki and sashimi mixed were at a really good portion. The location and food here is almost like finding a diamond in the ruff. That's amongst a little to no food scene here on the West Bank, when it comes to sushi. There is a lot to offer and many different options to choose from menu wise. So three stars for the inconsistency in the sushi (rice texture, meat flavor profile, and wasabi strength). This could definitely be a four star and the style and feel of the inside of the restaurant is warm, chic, and gives a dark class vibe to it. Finally - I found a good sushi spot in NOLA besides Tsunami! A sushi lover with much higher standards than me recommended Daiwa to me. Sushi was delicious and very fresh! I'm very picky about fish and found theres to be very good tasting and no fishy taste. I got the Marine roll and the kiwi crunch - loved both of them and their sauces were delicious. It was very well priced and good portions. We also got the shrimp gyoza and they were some of the best I've had. We got our order to go (cause covid) and it was very well packaged. Daiwa is a pretty good place for sushi in the West Bank, but their prices have sky rocketed over the years, while their portion sizes have decreased. I ordered to-go twice within the past two months, and I would be shocked opening my to-go box because how tiny my special rolls would be. Yeah, yeah, I know it was years ago, but I really wanted to mention this unforgettable experience because I don't know if anyone has experienced something similar. I am unsure if the same manager (or owner?) works there still, but he was SUPER aggressive & defensive. My mom and I waited at least an hour for our food to come out. I was happy to get my food until my roll was falling apart to the point where I couldn't even pick up one unified piece with my chopsticks. I was eating a poke bowl, at that point. Thinking that the manager would help me with this problem, he made a scene in front of all the customers and embarrassed us for no reason. I'm talking YELLING at us. It almost turned into an altercation because he was speaking to my mom very violently, and I had to step in to protect her. It's even more comical because my mom was a waitress at several sushi restaurants before this occurrence. We KNEW this wasn't the way to deal with a concern, and it was extremely disgusting since my mom and I weren't even making a big deal... we just wanted our roll to be fixed... I mean, is that such a big request? We didn't ask for anything for free nor did we eat the whole entire roll. I didn't know being verbally intimidated would come with our meal. Overall, I hope that same person isn't working there or I hope he has improved his reactions because nobody should be treated with such disgusting behavior. The food was mediocre at best. The service was far worse. The environment appeared too lax considering there was barely anyone here and there were several people covering the floor. The sushi chefs have always taken a long time to make the food. But I watched our food sit waiting for minutes before our server realized our food was just sitting. The sushi was obviously not fresh and the presentation was poor. As soon as my sister's food was placed down, one of the pieces fell over and the server just picked it up and put it back into the plate? I ordered a cocktail from the menu but they were out, which was disappointing. We ordered different types of dishes - sushi, rice bowl, grilled entree - and they came out at random times. Came for lunch and well, I really liked this place! This restaurant has bunch of tables and booths so whether you come by yourself or in a group, they can accommodate you. They had bunch of servers working at that hour so the service was super fast and amazing. We had Yakitori, peppery tuna with fresh wasabi, Naruto roll, AND they had uni that day so why not?! - snatched two pieces. Uni sushi was a pretty good chunk - bigger than ones I have tried at other Japanese joints. Amazingly fresh as well. I have never had Fresh wasabi before but my fellow Yelpers, do yourself a favor and try it if you like wasabi! It has a texture of almost sweet relish but the spicy punch surely will open up your sinuses. Everything else was great as well and I found the price to be very reasonable. It is located in a strip mall area so you really would never have a problem parking unlike New Orleans area. They offer pretty extensive menu so you definitely will find something you like whether you are a noodle person, rice lover, traditional Japanese cuisine person or a fusion Japanese foodie.
