Quality/Quantity - Got a few essentials. Not sure if it is me but I am noticing that prices keep increasing. Everywhere. I sure missed it when this was the $1.50 store... Atmosphere - Good size, shared building with the craft store next door. Service - Good, they thought we were locals. I get that a lot. Price - Depends on what you buy. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1977 and at this location for the last 1.5 years.

End of 2023 review (imo): Expect this place to be one of the best affordable places to go to in Hilo (because it is) also one of the best places to get affordable gifts. It is attached to BenFranklin's so, if you are entering from there, consider buying something from BenFranklin's first (you will see a sign to remind you just that). Service: Good, in regards to answering any questions and if you need help finding something; not good, in regards to helping you bag your items at check out. Idk why but the people working there rarely smile lately as well. But I've been noticing that in a few other places in Hilo now-a-days so I get that it cant be a good day for everyone everyday. Going the week when Daiso was new to Hilo, the employees at cashier were friendly say something nice like grant you good day after handing you a receipt. My last few visits were odd because I had to bag my own things, and they did not ask if I had a bag anymore. "Did I do something wrong?" Maybe they only ask if I purchase a Daiso bag? These where my last thoughts from my last visit. Other than that, Selection & value: Variety of goodies, cute things, and affordable gadgets from scrapbooking accessories to affordable curtain rods and kitchen storage containers and more; affordable but not all always a dollar; price legend still seems the same as the first time (yen to US dollar conversion). I was told if there is no price (in yen) on the item then it is just a dollar (not including tax so more likely around $1.75). Note: they might get the item you are looking for weeks or months after you just have to ask about it first... Otherwise if it is not there they do not have it.

I will preface by saying I'm glad there is a Daiso on the Big Island. This Daiso is better than no Daiso. However, if you are used to Daiso in Japan, do not expect it to be the same. This store is much smaller, and the pricing is pretty all over the place. In Japan, Daiso items are almost all 100 yen. It's simple to shop, put something in your basket, it's 100 yen. Easy to remember. Here, you have to take a picture of the price schedule and try and figure out every item before you toss it in. If not, you could easily walk out of there spending much more than you may have wanted to. I call it the Costco syndrome ("what the hell did I just spend $200 on?") A lot of items that you would think would or should be cheap, aren't. Curry boxes and Calpis soda cost the same or more than the supermarket. Daiso is a discount store- but lots of items don't appear to be discounted. The store size is very small compared to the other Daisos, but it can only the the size of the building the company chose to rent. They did do a good job of cramming a whole lot of things in that space though. There is a nice selection of just about everything. If you walk down each aisle, you will for sure find plenty of stuff, from useful gadgets and tools, to useless junk you didn't know you needed in your life until now. A trip to Daiso is usually half getting what you went for, and half getting stuff you didn't know you wanted until you got there and looked around. If the pricing wasn't so high, I would see myself going more. However, this isn't the case. I won't make a special trip across the island for it, but if and when I'm in Hilo, I would probably make a quick stop. It sure doesn't hurt them being across the street from Two Ladies Kitchen, which is a guarantee stop when I'm in Hilo.

Here for the hype, review for the hype. And because Japan. So if you're from Hawaii (or live in Hawaii) you may know Daiso opened up its fourth store in the islands and not on Oahu this time. Wow, *claps*. I haven't visited any of the locations in Hawaii, or Vegas, or LA, or or or, so I can't compare there but amongst the slew of Daisos haunting Japan this is a bit different. I've only been to Daiso in Japan actually, so this location was obviously smaller and minimal to me. Like every Daiso, the store is organized into categories, but now imagine that downsized. You can cover the entire collection on a lunch break as opposed to getting sucked into the trinket abyss like you do in Japan. Aww. I was missing a lot of cute stuff I stumble into Daisos for, but it didn't bother me because I'll always interrogate myself as to why I even need more shit. Anyway as soon as I entered the store and walked that first aisle where someone knocked a shelf off I realized quick that I didn't need to be there, lol. Since it's so new it was overwhelmingly packed and I was lucky to have even gotten a parking space; maneuvering both outside and inside was difficult. Then I saw pink water weights and stayed... So that's my best tip: maybe you don't want to go during the hype but wait until it's less busy? If you're trying to go while visiting the area it's understandable since there's not a lot going on materialistically.

    Daiso now open in Hilo!

How did I not know about this store. It was great and we found a couple things for our new house. Some curious snacks from Japan as well.

I first started shopping here in 2005 when I was living in Keaau but I keep going back whenever I'm in town. Now granted if you show up when a cruise ship is in town then definitely things will get sparse but the brands and things they carry in here are the BEST. Of course like every store, especially BARGAIN stores, it's gonna have it's good days and bad days but luckily for me, the Ross angels always smile upon me and I find the coolest stuff. For those who don't know, here's some tips about this store: - You need to take some time in here to go through everything. That's when you find the killer stuff. I've gotten Via Spiga shoes for $8, Armani pants for $5, guess jeans for $1, Calvin Klein sweater/shrug for $6 and lots of other brand names you see in Nordstroms sold here. -You have to go with no particular items in mind. If you came here with a specific item in mind that you want, you'll probably be disappointed, but if you just come and let the spirit guide you, you're gonna find some great things. Just recently, I got my sister a $250 Speedo Parka (the kind swimmers wear at meets and/or you wear at a football game on the mainland) for $15. She's been wanting this too and how random is that I found it here?!? -I found that the non-island essentials are the cheapest; long sleeve Ralph Lauren polo shirts, leather jackets, sweaters, suits, etc. I've noticed that it's the super high end brand names in winter/cold weather styles is what's plentiful and cheapest here. Slippers, jean shorts, tanks and bathing suits are never gonna be on sale here and are usually the tourists/locals first choice items so you might find yourself better off at a Macy's 1 day sale for price and selection. At any rate, Ross ain't for everybody and it's definitely not a Macy's or Neiman Marcus, but it's clean and friendly enough. It's a bargain hunters playground!

Instead, Keaukaha General Store (within easy walking distance of the Port of Hilo) provided a great selection of sundries, some souvenirs of Hilo, and a small menu of Hawaiian favorite dishes at prices that were the lowest I've seen in Hawaii. My wife and I came here twice: first while walking into town, when we picked up souvenirs and an unexpected loco moco plate. It was a lot less crowded then, with us being the only ones there...allowing us to have a completely different experience. When we came back as we headed back towards the ship, other cruisers from the ship had discovered this place, and were stocking up on various things. It's a large modern space inside, with things organized displayed very neatly. There was no sense I needed to check for expiration dates. There was a portable ATM machine right by the door. A decent selection of alcohol at good prices were displayed (e.g. $8.81 for a bottle of Barefoot Cab or $18.99 for a 12 pack of Budweiser). I took the opportunity to get something I've not seen elsewhere: a bag of dried clams (aka Asari) for $4.19. Ended up finishing it that night...was really good. It has an all day menu, and was able to order a Loco Moco for breakfast. The all beef patty was very thick and dense, definitely from a frozen patty...good for Salisbury steak or Loco Moco, but wouldn't be great for a burger. The brown gravy was served hot and hadn't congealed, and the 1 egg had been cooked over easy, just as requested. It was obviously freshly made. It was packed to-go, with condiments and utensils available near the registers. There wasn't much space to eat inside, but because it wasn't too busy, found a space to sit in the back. I scarfed it down (probably too fast) while my wife finished her shopping. Also in the back, there are gourmet coffee machines and a chest freeze full of hand scoopable ice cream. There is a Pepsi self serve soda machine, along with various sizes of chips. My wife initially bought a couple of t-shirts as requested souvenirs for our travel mates ($25 a piece), and bought another one as we were heading back. On the 1st trip, she also liked a perfume body mist...the tester was the last one so the attendant sold it for half price ($14). For us, she bought a Hilo waterproof sticker for $2.75. And her favorite part of the store was the small portable Pokémon card machine, that dispensed random Japanese Pokémon cards for a quarter. She kept changing out dollars for quarters and ended up getting $5.75 of them...and a couple of them were hollos that we like. They do charge a 3.25% credit card fee, so cash is preferred when possible.
