Cost U Less is a decent alternative to Costco, on the east side. It is definitely more expensive and has less variety than Costco, but you can find some killer deals on their clearance items if you're willing to pop in every so often. read more

I have to admit I love this store. No pretension and very nice staff. I think they are getting away from Kirkland products and moving to the new brand, Oh So Good, which will only be available at Cost You Less stores. The prices on these is like taking a step back in time and so far very high quality. Some things at the store you can get for less at WalMart but for the most part pretty good deals. Certainly not the scale of Costco but a much more pleasurable experience. read more

It's a costco knock off with less inventory and higher prices but the best place to go to in Hilo if you are looking to buy things in bulk. Don't assume that all things are cheaper as target and walmart carry many things at cheaper prices and you may not have to buy in bulk. Store is clean, organized and workers are friendly. read more

An ongoing issue is CostULess' mixing OLD BROWN MEAT in with fresh ground pink meat, carefully disguising it by making sure the exposed top portion is beautifully pink--but when you get it home you find the impudent deception within. It is simply disgusting how the owners of this store have made deception an integral part of their business model. Another is their mixing water in with the ground meat to add weight, and upon unwrapping, when you pick up a handful of ground meat to form a burger or meatballs, it literally drips with water. The owners of CostULess have no respect whatsoever for their customers. I'd give this business zero stars if possible, but they do deserve one star anyway for their great employees --all except of course for their despicable BUTCHERS who are complicit in their employer's deceptive practices. read more

Plain and simple Cost U Less saves you money. Their selection isn't as great as Costco and the place could look better but the savings do add up. Personal Note: I'm a cheese lover and NOWHERE in Hilo sells decently priced cheese! Sack n Save and KTA are a ripoff and living here has made me deprived. That's why Cost U Less is the only place to go. Two fresh mozzarella for $10.99, mascapone for $3.25 and a big wheel of brie for $10.99. I am in heaven :) read more

Recomended by a friend, this gem of a store is a mini version of Costco without wasting all day going to Kona from Hilo. No fighting crowds, no membership requirements and friendly staff. Suggest visiting to determine what needs can be filled there then plan your trips to Costco. We cut our Kona trips in half. Just in time and gas savings as well as frozen stuff not thawing its worth it. Prices are slightly higher than Costco but they do carry Kirkland products. read more

If you don't want to take the long trip from Hilo to Kona just to go to Costco, then Cost-U-less might do. Cost-U-Less is a much smaller version of Costco without the membership card. They also don't have nearly as much variety as Costco. But they do have the basics that you will need to get by. Everything from canned goods, groceries, liquor, household items, and pet supplies. Although they don't offer the same type of savings as Costco, sometimes it's worth it to stay in town to get the little things that you need. The store is never crowded, and it's easy to find things, since the store is not huge. As far as price goes, they are usually a little cheaper than the grocery stores, as far as canned goods and freezer items goes. The meats though are quit pricey. I always go to a different store for my meat products. In all for grocery and household items at reasonable prices Cost-U-Less is alright. You can save your bulk shopping for Costco when you have the time for the two hour drive to Kona! read more

Every time I shop at Cost U Less, I am taken aback at how helpful and polite the staff are! Prices on many items are much better than anywhere else on this side of the island. I'm giving 4 stars due to such limited bulk shopping on Hilo side not having a Costco. Been here 7 months and shocked to have just now stumbled on this little gem on Yelp! Bummer on our first visit meat/bakery and another partial isle closed for some reason. One must be cautious on overall prices and know a good bargain as I saw alot that were not good buys that I get at Longs much cheaper. You won't find staff easy to find and hated the poor lighting in frozen food areas. Must say Best Buy's we found on first trip were in produce, tomatoes, citrus, greens all really good some things better than farmers market! Found few things in dairy/ cheese area well priced too. Other things like 2-pk juices, spices, some snacks things, oils, condiments, cereals, etc. Looks like different specials weekly. Nice to know it's an added option. Beer/wine no cheaper than Longs for most part. Very little non-food items, maybe one isle. But glad we found for certain things. read more

I think they previous reviewer was a little harsh. Cost-U-Less has bulk items and non bulk items. Their spices are cheaper in mass quantity than Safeway's regular price for a teenie tiny bottle. Also Costco has been out of bulk yeast and Cost-u-less had a large mass quantity for the same price as 3 small packages from Wal-Mart which would probably equal a few hundred servings of the ones from Wal-Mart. There are great deals here and then there are the items that match Safeway's regular prices. It is more expensive than Costco, but you save 3 hours plus round trip, it is convienant and it is good to support Hilo's local businesses. read more

I just want to share my experience with you. I went to grab a few things and took Hannah with me. After much - I need that, I love that, I promise I'll never ask for anything again... we got checked out. I had to run to Safeway for a couple things that CUL didn't have... When I got to the check out....no wallet frown emoticon FREAK !!! Went back, checked in and around the car...nothing. So we got in the car and headed back thinking it was a lost cause and trying to remember what all I had in my wallet. Got there and asked the lady at the Service counter if anyone had turned in a wallet... she had it right there ... she had been looking in it trying to find a phone number. OMG was I relieved. You can tell much of this stuff was bought at Kona Costco, and simply being resold here at a higher price. Do yourself a favor and take that once a month drive to Kona and get what you need from Costco directly. By no means does this store "cost u less" compared to just going to Costco. read more

cost u less is lame. I would much rather drive to kona if you want to get a deal on some shopping. stuff is not that much cheaper. If your going to support local hilo businesses, to to the farmer market or to maku'u on sunday. cost u less isn't carrying things grown in hilo or meat from local pastures. The one thing cost u less is sweet for is the fact that they carry eco friendly things like 7th gen. brand, from dish soap to diapers and eco friendly trash bags. With gas approaching $4.50 and higher, it's worth shopping Cost-U-Less for paper products, beverages, canned meat, butter, frozen fruit, frozen meat and the fresh veggies. My list is not that large for most people but I know that personally, I can't justify driving to Kona to save a little more. Selection is not great but the store is smaller and is adequate. They carry pickled asparagus which I love !! Also, their cherry tomatoes and cauliflower are very reasonable. I do wish they would carry spinach (the big bag like Costco). read more

Like most stores in Hilo... it's pathetic! And, most locals are clueless. They don't know what good commerce is. This warehouse store is a sad attempt at a Big Box. Mostly they carry the same groceries you'll find at Sack n' Save, KTA and Safeway but, with fewer choices. Then, there is the random stocking of overpriced, stapled together furniture, pots and pans and, cheap clothing. And, nothing here is a bargain. But, there are so few places to shop in Hilo they've got us over the barrel... they know exactly what they can get away with. There's just not real competition on this side of the island. You want to pay $80 in gas to go to Costco on the other side for affordable bread, a rotisserie chicken or olive oil? No, not really. read more

Cost-U- Less is evolving! In the 11 years that I have been shopping there it has changed greatly. They have begun begun carrying many more items of a higher quality. Hilo shoppers like myself would LOVE to have a Costco on this side--their prices and selection are the best---but then, look at their size! When one figures in the cost of gas round-trip, plus the $55 or so membership card costs, Cost-U-Less is actually a pretty good deal. And shopping locally does help support the smaller business who are getting choked out by the 'big-boxes'. They do carry some bulk items---but fortunately, also carry more reasonably portioned items as well. Most things you can buy a case of, or you can buy only one. They have recently begun including many organic and environmentally friendly products as well--- an addition which I really applaud. And those with limited incomes who get food stamps can shop there as well--contrary to Costco. That is certainly a service to many in this difficult economy. I like Cost-U-Less!!! read more
