Loved this open air bookstore in downtown Hilo. We accidentally stumbled across it wandering around and I was instantly in love. It has such a lovely vibe with the giant open windows in the front, and in addition to books, sells art and other little trinkets. The person working there was very friendly with us. My husband ended up buying a first edition book from one of his favorite authors that he found here. read more

Bought books to realize that this place was selling some of these above the original market value when the author released it. If a book is 7.99 There is no reason it should be resold for 8.50 Especially when the covers are bent and there are holes in it. Thats called a rip off and a scam. It's like selling a used car with 100,000 miles on it for retail price and acting like there's no miles on it. read more

A cute spot with electric finds and treasures! Very clean and neat and there's something for everyone!

Warning: Homophobia Unfortunately, we didn't get to spend much time looking at books here. The store manager approached one of us (wearing a pride hat) and told them to "watch out." When asked for clarification, she glared and said "you know what I meant." We tried to be generous and confirm that we didn't misunderstand her, but she said a third time that we shouldn't wear a pride hat in there. We left immediately. Surprising to see such homophobia in a bookstore of all places, but future guests should beware. read more

Delightful little book store with beautiful art pieces and even clothes! I wander around this book store when I need inspiration and each time I have found unexpected treasures: books that felt "just right" for where I am in my journey of life. It's not easy doing business in Hilo downtown, so I'm grateful for Hollie and Matt holding this spot of bright light in town. I stumbled into this super cute book store by accident after visiting the Hilo farmers market. The staff were incredibly friendly and the store had a great selection of books, music, DVDs, and unexpectedly, of thrifted clothing as well. Reasonably priced as well. The lady working here repetitively made homophobic comments and threw hostile looks towards me and my friend for wearing rainbow attire. She was astoundingly disrespectful and rude, so we walked out immediately after. We visit Hawaii yearly and this was the first time we were met with such vitriol. Definitely telling our friends not to stop by here, and definitely do not give this place your business. read more

5 stars for the friendly staff person who did their best to help me when I went in to the store. Zero stars for the following: 1) their phone message says open daily at noon, but Yelp hours say they're closed Sunday. In fact, they are open every day. 2) Phone message says they won't tell you if they have a book, you have to go look yourself. This sucks if you live 45 minutes away and are gonna have to use gas driving both ways to find out they don't have the book. How hard would it be to take your name and number and get back to you in 24 hours whether they have it or not ? 3) Can't leave voicemail because the voicemail is full. 4) Pricing. Picked up a used book I was mildly interested in, to find it was priced at $30 which was higher than the original cost of the book printed in the jacket, and double what the hardcover edition sells for on Amazon. 5) They are also soliciting "donations" of books as if they're some kind of non-profit. Kinda left me feeling like if they are going to mark things up to twice the Amazon pricing, they could at least offer to buy your books rather than asking you to "donate" them. Still, I supposed it's better to "donate" them to this for-profit business instead of tossing them in the landfill. read more

If you find yourself in the walkable section of old Hilo town, you will come across a gem of a bookstore. Turn The Page is Hilo's open air bookstore/mini clothing thrift shop with lots to look at and like. Opened and owned for the last three and a half years by Hollie and her husband, the two take turns running the shop. It has a wonderfully eclectic eye for books, some are new and others used, all at very reasonable prices. I bought a beautiful illustrated hard cover of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha for a steal, a version of the classic I hadn't seen in a bookstore for quite a while. It's not a giant store, but you can easily get lost in the many aisles of books, or take a stroll thru the used clothing room (yes, it has a fitting room to try stuff on before you buy). Turn The Page opened during COVID and survived mainly due to its open air setting (the front wall of the store is lined with large open windows giving the space a much bigger feel. Hollie said that due to the open air vibe, they attracted a lot of local musicians who had nowhere else to play. This helped the book shop gain a following during a tough time for most businesses in the area. Turn The Page also supports local artists by hanging their artwork on the walls and there are a variety of events that take place in the book shop, call them for more details. Throughout the shop there are comfy spots to sit and peruse the book of your choice. There's even a great little kids corner with some interesting kid's book selections. And let's not forget the signs, they have a large collection of all sorts of signs, from humorous to inspirational. Pretty much everything in the store is for sale, so if you see something you like, just ask. Be careful tho, you may end up spending a lot more time in here than you originally intended. A magical maze of a bookstore to be experienced in the heart of the beautiful downtown of Hilo, Hawaii. Yesterday, we walked into this open air yet indoors gem, not knowing what we would discover. Upon the first step...bam. The book I had just been reading the reviews. Front and center was a book, "The Storyteller" by Jodi Picoult. Then another aha moment happens. To the left; the home decor section beckons. How to paint a faux wall for our newly built studio. As we stroll through the thoughtfully curated and perfectly organized wonderland, curiosity led us to the back; a trove of intricate scarves. What caught my attention was a vibrant and energetic woman named Cynthia. We shared in conversation. Her beauty was more than skin deep as she wove stories of her world travels and youth as a child in NYC. Her parents worked in the fashion industry. Evident in her eye for fine things. The nook was filled with Upcycled eclectic clothing chock full of whimsy. A lovely peacock painted silk crepe de chine trimmed scarf in red velvet caught my eye and as would have it; a Pueo scarf for my friend, captured her attention. We left in awe and when in Hilo will always return to this, "once upon a time" magical place. read more

It's a really nice shop in downtown Hilo on historic Haili St. next to the Palace Theater.They're open til 7 (except Sundays ) I saw people waiting for their show at the Palace stopping by. Heather, the proprietor, is very helpful. The store is comfortably filled with books and daylight and a huge selection that's well organized. There's a small vintage clothing section I've never taken time to peruse, but I've found many books and traded in quite a few too. Go there you will definitely find something to make you want to Turn the Page read more

Sweet open-air bookstore! It's clean, well-stocked, and organized logically by genre. Nice children's and YA sections, too. With all the choices, there's something for every reader. And the staff will help with suggestions, too. I restrained myself and only bought one novel (thinking about luggage), but could easily have taken home five. The vibe is mellow, artistic, and fun. I walked into this store with my daughter. Yes, it's charming with a maze of books that we got lost in. Then I started looking at prices. They are almost at a premium for used books compared to new ones. What I found most absurd is that books for kids in "Hawaiian" with a price tag of $25. These should essentially be free for locals. Something for everyone in this used bookstore! Friendly staff and lots of fun browsing in their mazelike shelves. Some evenings, they have live music in the store, too. I headed straight for the science fiction section and was not disappointed. There's a cute area for children. They take trade-ins for store credit. read more

~The bookstore is nice, well arranged & open air. Yes, there is live music some evenings, my husband played there twice for free, as many do. Being a professional, he was told, "We're thinking of hiring ppl, come 'audition' again." Not the point of my review. He loves playing. ~~We went in 2 afternoons in a row, spent over $50 each time. I came in a 3rd time wanting to return a $15 silver wire ring purchased that sprung apart within a few days. Holly, one of the owners told me NO as it came from a vendor & would recoup only a few dollars if she were to refund. I've never experienced a store owner not supporting items they sell! Worse, was Holly demeaning my complaint by saying, "No one else has ever asked for a refund." ~I left angry & came back unexpectedly a few minutes later to Holly & another employee talking disparagingly about me w/o realizing I had reentered the store. ~It's a shame, bookstore set up is very nice. However, we will not promote a store that may treat other customers shabbily. Thank goodness there are other good ones in Hilo we can advertise to our customers. read more
