Poor Service! We bought cheese and it was great. However, I am giving a low rating as we stopped mainly to purchase ice cream for our 92 year old mom - celebrating her bday that day! The hours posted said they were open until 4pm and we walked in at 3:40pm, the ice cream shop part of the store was open, but they wouldn't serve because they were closing. We kindly asked for our 92 yo mom who recently had a stroke (big outing today) and they said, no. Seriously? Very disappointing.Get there at 2pm if you want ice cream! Since this company was bought out by some cheese maker in Illinois, they stopped selling there own cheese curds. They order them from some other cheese maker. So you can't get the good ones anymore. Most of the time they run out. This current owner doesn't have any idea what a stupid move that was. read more

This place is an absolute gem. We live in Madison, so it is about a 2 hour drive for us, but it was completely worth the drive. Since it is a bit far for us, I suggested we make this an annual trip, but honestly, it was so much fun that we are definitely to go more than once. When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was how crowded it was. We first did a walk through of all the available cheese before choosing what to put in our basket. I would like to note that they only accept cash and check. The gas station down the block has an atm, but a charge to withdraw cash. The amount and variety of cheese they have is what Wisconsin is all about. We spent $80 and got almost 20 different cheeses. Refer to picture. What a deal. They make absolute wonderful, special christmas gifts too. We got paneer, limburger spread, flavored cheddar, aged and white cheddar, brie, string cheese, and gouda. Especially excited to cook with the paneer. This place embodies Wisconsin's cheese culture and pride in our dairy. It was a really special treat. read more

Imagine the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory of Cheese. They have more cheese varieties than you can imagine. They even make cheese curds here. If you are within an hour of Rudolph for any reason, I need you to drop whatever you're doing and drive to the Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese factory immediately. It's a completely overwhelming place due to the huge variety, but the upside is that even if you basically black out from joy like I did, it's so cheap that when you emerge from your haze at the register it won't set you back anything close to what the same haul would at a grocery store. The factory store offers their own stock plus that of other cheesemakers. You can buy cheese by the block, in curd form, wedges, strings, spreads, and even in wax shapes ranging from corn cobs to dinosaurs to football players. You can also buy cream cheese and butter. On my first trip last weekend I got hot pepper Monterey jack, garlic Monterey jack, Dutch-style gouda, cranberry Monterey jack, smoky cheddar, aged asiago, aged sharp white cheddar, cream havarti, aged cheddar spread, cream cheese, and cinnamon honey butter. The total lot (around 6 pounds of cheese) set me back $27. That spread is dangerous, as is the smoky cheddar. I'm excited to try the cream cheese as I've only ever had the mass-produced variety. I may have walked out with a ridiculous amount of cheese, but at such low prices it was hard to say no. I easily could have walked out with double, but since we were camping there was only so much room in our cooler. I can't wait to go back, though, to try some other varieties! read more

AMAZING place for your CHEESE fix! On a recommendation from my Yelp community manager, I made the trip up to check this place out. I'm so glad I did. I was very prepared and brought an empty cooler and ice for the long trip home. This place takes CASH or CHECKS ONLY. This place was packed with people on a Sunday at 11am. They close at noon on Sundays. They had two long lines of people checking out, but the lines went pretty quick. Some people were standing in line and shopping at the same time. That was a great idea. I felt as though I was shopping the day after Thanksgiving! They have a lot of cheese options. They make a lot of different types of cheeses themselves (and a lot of flavored varieties). They have lots of spreadable cheeses, decoratively shaped blocks of cheeses (Bucky and others), some specialty cheeses from other cheese makers, cheese curds (plain and flavored), maple syrup, honey, beef sticks (lots of options), shredded cheese, sliced cheeses, blocks of cheeses, goat cheese, Italian and Mexican cheeses and so so so much more. They have salted, unsalted and whipped butters. They have whey protein powder that is awesome in frozen fruit smoothies. Their prices are ridiculously CHEAP! I filled my cooler to the brim and spent $60. They do have an ice cream area and the cones looked amazing too. read more

My parents have a cabin in the area, so they stop in every time they're up. After hearing them go on and on about how awesome this place is, I was excited to finally be able to check it out for myself. When you walk in, the store is to the right- filled with pretty much any kind of cheese you can imagine! To the left is the ice cream shop- with a wide variety of flavors. And it's SO inexpensive and GOOOOD! For 3 double scoop cones, and one single dish- only cost $8. You can head up a flight of stairs to view a video of the cheese making process, and also to get a good look at the factory below. The only con I have about this place- the video they show is VERY dumbed-down and corny. Yes, it explains the general process of cheese making so that people of all ages will be able to understand, but it felt to me like it was leaving out some important information and bounced around to different segments too frequently. The quality of the cheese, ice cream, and service totally makes up for that, though!! read more

The cheese curds, of which there are many varieties, are of the highest quality, always squeaking when eaten and bursting with flavor. The mozzarella and parmesan make excellent pasta toppings, and the string cheese is superb in its peel-back appeal. Also enticing is the fudge, which comes in a couple flavors, and the offerings from other dairies, including flavored butters, sausages, international cheeses, and more. A peculiarity of this retail outlet is their china collection, proudly displayed on the wall in their ice cream parlour. The cheese was all wrapped, but the woman working offered to open a couple of them and let us taste them. My friends and I spent close to $100 and got a ton of cheese! My son and I also had a ice cream cone while we were there looking at the chess and I have to say it was the best ice cream ever. The honey is very good to it's pricey but worth it. Every time I go up to visit my family in Wis. Rapids, I beg to go shop at the Dairy State Cheese Factory. The prices are great( compared to Madison). The selection is wonderful. The only problem I encounter is that it is just to packed. the lines wrap around the coolers of cheese and it's hard to shop when you have to squeeze passed people to grab cheese. They are growing to big for their britches. It's not a bad thing.. actually it's a great thing. On Sundays is when I usually make it out there and they claim to close at 12:00pm but when they have 60 people in the store, I'm sure it's hard to close the doors. If there was something I would change. It would be the weekend hours. I know I'm used to places in Madison being open till 9:00 pm on weekends but even keeping open to 6 pm would help the flow of costumers through the door. They take cash or check only. and I can't help but walk out of there with $40.00 worth of cheese to bring back to Madison since it costs to much to buy it here :) read more
